Unfortunately these poor chickens that are bred for the table are killed at 8 weeks of age and due to the way they are reared their little chick legs have to support an adult body and they can barely walk some not at all. It takes a special person to care & try to help one of gods little creatures well done .

Jack Russell 4. What you did was really kind and I'm sure the chicken felt your care. When we had rescued battery farm hens and cockerels we kept them until the end, just clucking around the land in their ceased-to-be-productive geriatric way. When one of them fell ill, the others would gather fussing it and gently clucking at it. So if they can feel empathy for each other I can see no reason why they wouldn't be able to feel and appreciate your caring too.

Sounds like your chicken may have had Mareks disease - makes them drag a leg, then later stages fall over - it is terminal, so sadly nothing you or your vet could have done would have saved the poor soul, but I'm sure that everyone - with four feet or two, or wings - understands and appreciates love, care and kindness. Safe now and free from pain xx

white hens bred for meat, brown for eggs - that is in the factory farm world. so this little bird was perhaps one of the few who literally fall off a lorry en route to being killed. so sorry she/he didnt survive despite all the love and care

Hi Claire how do I get the chicken moved over to rainbow bridge on doglost? Things took a turn for the worst Wednesday afternoon, so I took to my vets and it was decided to PTS 😢. Poor little sole. Every time she/he tried to walk they kept falling over, so along with the once broken leg she/he was now not able to balance and was looking very disorientated. I am just hoping and praying that she/he felt loved in the few hours that they where with me because I really think they hadnt had much before that 😔. Really sorry to bother you xx

Jack Russell 4 - Really pleased that he/she is being cared for. I think that it will be some time before you know for sure if it's male or female - no crowing or eggs just yet, but looking at the amount of comb showing for such a young chicken I suspect it's a boy. I know of someone on a chicken forum who does take in and re-home unwanted chickens, including cockerels, but he is based in the midlands - perhaps a bit too far for you? Please keep us up-dated though and I will help in any way I can.

Yes she/he is safe at mine. He/she was very hungry/thirsty and tired but is now settled down for the night x

She looks like the free range chickens that are reared near to me they are sent to the factory at the age of 8 weeks hopefully the one you found has escaped .Gina c is quite correct that suspect males are often dumped .
