Well done, it just needed that bit of calm relaxed time with someone and something familiar to bring Charlie out of his fight or flight mode. Welcome home Carl. X

He's home!!!

My mum, his owner, was on her own and about to go home after being out all day again. She spotted him (not for the first time!). Got down low, played with a crisp bag, shook some keys, then when for a second she thought he was going to bolt, she starting bouncing his ball and doing that dog voice she does. He gingerly came closer, she chucked it. He fetched it and ran back to her and he was grabbed!

Amazing. Thanks to everyone involved for their your help.

There were a few sightings last early evening, all close to each other but sadly he wasn't caught.
The owners have plans in place but for now, anyone walking in the area should do so quietly and slowly, be unobtrusive and don't call out to him should you see him. Call or text the owners and they will come to you immediately. Still feeling positive!

from facebook..............Spotted Charlie in my front garden, Stewart's Green. Unfortunately he bolted as soon as I opened the front door:( This was 7.10pm. Have left some food out, just in case he returns. Fingers crossed:)

New update from owners:

"NEW SIGHTING!
Charlie was spotted by the vineyard in Hambledon this morning (19th Sept) at 8am.
So keep your eyes peeled everyone and remember not to call his name or approach him if you see him, just ring one of the numbers straight away and we will come to you.
Thank you again for all the support."

Good news he is still in the area and so frustratingly close by!

Latest info:

We had a call late yesterday that Charlie was possibly seen early yesterday morning in the area around Lott's General Store at around 6.30am.

We're still being advised to scale back the direct search, no calling his name, or whistling. And we also need to keep away from horses who apparently have been spoked by all the people around who were calling Charlie.

That said, I would ask you to control speeds in the area, keep an eye out for him and report any sightings as soon as possible.

Thanks again for everyone's help and concern, it's really heartwarming.

Have you postered the local pubs? Three close to the triangle are Chairmakers Arms (Worlds End), Fox and Hounds (School Lane) and Horse and Jockey (Hipley - just beyond the Chairmakers). May be worth doing the Harvest Home (Denmead), too?
I cannot get out today, but can take some posters tomorrow if liked? (Hope Charlie will be home soon.)

Chris yawning is anti stress in a dog as is licking their lips, nose to mouth (not side to side).
I would not put food in front of me at first sight of the dog. Keep 5-10 meters away, drop some food, move the same distance away and sit down, even lay down and watch and wait. Only then can you assess what to do next. If he bolts when he sees you 10 meters away you need a different plan which I have mentioned to Emma this pm.

If he will allow you to stay in the same area and watch you, you can work with him to catch him. Do not wear a hat (unless raining!) sunglasses etc, let him see your face but do not stare him out. Glance only. If you know he sticks around start putting your back to him. Do not try to get near him to quick. Make sure you are in a position so that the breeze or wind picks up your scent first and then he can air scent you. Do not rush any point, and if he is near a road, place the food furher and further away from it, ie to a safer area.

Charlie was last seen around 2/3 today. I didn't check the exact time! He was seen off Broad Lane and was trailed north across fields towards Hambledon Lane, emerging onto the road at nears Well Hill Stables on one side and Jolly-something stables on the other.

We think he's in the triangle created by Broad Lane, Uplands Road, Hambledon Road, and the road that runs from Hambledon to World's End (no name?).

He's terrified, didn't come to call so please all be aware. I've done some reading, so if you're helping tomorrow (which we really appreciate), I suggest parking up and walking around the fields in the area. Take some smelly food (dog food, or kippers), open container, but carry it with you. Don't call or whistle for him. If you spot him, make unthreatening noises, like a gentle clearing of the throat and crouch low, letting him come to you. Don't tap your legs, or call him. Just sit low, licking our lips or yawning (apparently) and lay some food out in front of you. Pretending to eat some of the food will help him know you're non-threatening. Let him come close, smell you, don't hold out your hand. Be still. When you're very sure you can grab him, do so, but don't chase him or move towards him because he will bolt, and believe me because I learnt the hard way today, he can run faster than you!

If you spot him, please call 07881 530057 immediately and we'll come to you.

Thanks for all your help. Means so much to the family.

Update from me (owners might be along later with better info), Spent most of day out looking for him. Charlie has been seen 3 or 4 times today by owners but he just bolts when approached. He has been seen very near Pitt Hill Lane Joanne, last sighting was between Rushmore Lane and Hambledon Road. He has crossed the road a couple a times and gone towards Uplands Road/Broad Lane. He is a very frightened lad :-(
Loads of people are out and about helping with the search (including two very helpful police officers!), lots of posters are up so all we can is keep fingers & paws crossed.
Joanne Barringer
Is there any updates or new sightings of Charlie? I'm going to be walking my dog on Pitt Hill tracks later and will keep a look out if that's any help?

I've also just bumped and updated most of the local Facebook posts!Last edited: 2016-09-16 10:50:54 by Ness

OK, so update from me:
I went out first thing and covered all the lanes and roads between Denmead/Clanfield/Hambledon, I drove them and stopped at various points looking across fields etc. I suggested that Bezels Kennels was called as they are in the middle and if Charlie heard dogs barking, he may investigate. Went to Glidden Farm and Worlds End.
Then got the update that he was seen along Hambledon Road = only about a mile from where I live - so headed back and drove Hambledon Road from Hambledon to Denmead and back again, looked in verges and up tracks. I then came back and called in at the stables, poultry farm and stopped any dog walker I saw and passed on all the details.
Finally, I pulled in on the left going into Denmead just before Glasspole Road (which n the right) and walked my dogs all through the woods there and across the fields.
Just before I left, I stopped the postman and gave him all the details, he was very concerned and said he would look very carefully and also pass the word on.
I'm around most of the weekend - Emma has my number. Call me if you want more help.
Good LuckLast edited: 2016-09-16 12:15:29 by Ness

Charlie was seen this morning (Friday 16th) on Hambledon Road heading into Denmead. Near the sign welcoming you to Denmead. A driver of a car apparently called out and he ran apparently ran towards a house.

Emma is posting on this fb page. Probably like me she cannot get on to DL from a phone so if you post here and are on fb, can you double up so she can get it.
He may be making his way back to Clanfield, which is "home"

Ness is going out tomorrow to look. Have alerted Ravenette to FB posts and between us feeding advice to "Emma" who is the girlfriend of the Owners son, and she is doing the social media bit.

What I was alarmed to learn was "He was on a walk with a new dog walker in an area he had never been before, apparently he just ran off. He is my boyfriends mums dog and they have had him for several years (he is 5 years old) but not from a puppy- they live about 20/30 min drive away from the area"

This was in response to some of my questions to try and establish how he went missing. So scenting by the owner in the area he went missing is key to try and obtain the sightings.
