That brilliant post from SRussell reviewing how she used Jayne's exact advice needs capturing and sending to EVERY owner whose dog is lost. So many times we see dogs sighted on here but will keep running as owners don't understand their voice sounds different and stressed and a calm wait of 20mins or more is needed being very still and using a normal happy voice...please send that experience in emails to every "lost" owner. A distressed dog being chased and yelled at desperately will not come to anyone.

You are welcome for the advice...so glad you were able to go out equiped with the knowledge. Sorry have edited your posts owner and Huggermugger as my name is Jayne from head office not Jenny...LOL...I was the one who spoke to you....

We are so happy to have Sparrow back safe and sound. I saw him at 0630 this morning and he ran away from me - I was heartbroken that he would do this! I came home and called Jaynefrom HQ to get some advice and was told that he wouldn't know it was me, that he would be scared and would not recognise me from my stressed calling or frantic movements - she was right!
She advised that I calmed down - took out something to lay scent trails (watered down pee or vacuum cleaner bag contents - something that would smell of me or our home , and to lay a trail leading to a central location where I put his bed.
I saw him again a while later and again he turned to run, but this time I sat down on the floor and gently called him in a positive voice then waited. It took him a good 15 minutes to slowly edge towards me (over 200m away)and several times he turned to flee, but I gently called his recall command again and waited. Slowly he came forwards and then suddenly he saw my other dog. They both stared at each other and then Sparrow ran full speed at us and bowled us both over - I have never seen such relief or happiness in an animal!

If it wasn't for the advise given I firmly believe that he would have kept on running - getting more scared with each encounter. I managed to get him in relatively quickly, sometimes it can take a long time to build their confidence that you are really their loved owner.
Please if this happens to you don't be disheartened, understand that a dog does not recognise you by sight and your calling for them does not help - they just won't know it is you. You need to tap into their recognition by scent and be patient, slowly convincing them its you and its safe.

Great news! just had a call from the owner who I spoke at length earlier about how to react with her dog when she saw him...she listened to everypoint and did exactly that and sat down etc...well done and so happy Sparrow is back...

Sparrow has now been found - I met up with Sukey just after she "recaptured" him. She said that the tracking/scenting info from Jayne was absolutely invaluable. She was so relieved! I think she is under the impression that her husband has notified you but they may just all be caught up in the joyous reunions! Sparrow was a bit thin but very very happy to see her - very vocal! Lots of people locally sharing info and taking posters so a good all round effort.

Went out tonight with Sukey and Geoff and their dogs and mine & did a sweep in the fields around Newbury College but no sign. Think Sukey plans to go back up there again early tomorrow. Put a few posters up and pub, Pizza Hut & McDonalds all have a copy. Think all supermarkets and vets do as well. Am going to walk on the Common tomorrow behind the bunkers and distribute posters/ put more up. I think he has been seen generally in the Tesco/College/A339/Link area but last sighting was 9.30am this morning so a while ago.

Hi, I'm very local and would be more than happy to help with a co ordinated search with or without (my very dog friendly) dogs. Just let me know x
Please stay safe and allow yourself to be found soon Sparrow xx

I have spoken to Sukey and am posting on all the selling sites on Facebook atm. She and her family are going up to Newbury College at 8pm this evening to look for Sparrow. I have said I will join her with my dogs as he is happy with other dogs and posibly more likely to come to them than to me...

Try contacting www.k9tracker.co.uk, she will give good advice even if she is unable to come and track. Have you had scenting advice? Try leaving something that smells of him, or you (soaked in your pee is good) near where he has been seen.

Sukey - will ring you. Sally-Ann

I have advised her to update here and ask for help. I would like to help but think it needs to be co-ordinated - preferably by someone who is a bit more experienced in all this than I am! Have also advised her to post on Spotted Newbury and Thatcham & Newbury and Thatcham, Berkshire and to notify all vets, especially Falkland which is v close to Newbury College.

News on Sparrow- still lost, but spotted this morning.
Please keep on looking and sharing. The wonderful Sparrow was seen at 0930 near Newbury College this morning. Thank you for all your efforts so far. We are sure with your help that we can bring him home.

I'm Sukey, his owner and we are now shifting our search from the common to the college tonight. Apparently he was very scared, but looked unharmed. He's quite young and nervous of strangers, but we are hoping by we can find him soon. Thank you everyone, he is a wonderful dog and we all my miss him terribly, but more than that he deserves to be home, safe and sound.

A lady called Sukey is posting about this dog in "Lost and Found in Newbury (Berkshire)" to say that he has been sighted near Newbury College at 9.30am this morning - I think she is either the owner or posting on behalf of the owner. I live v close and would be happy to go and look but probably need a bit more info...
Sally
Will put posters up this evening in surrounding villages!

I have logged Sparrow as lost as not reported to us.

Jot Cotswolds sometimes the owner hits the wrong button in their panic. I have now changed the region.

How can Newbury in Berkshire be classified as Central? It is below the M4. If there's no option to denote "South" which should cover Berks, Wilts, Hants, and W Sussex, then it might be better to show it as South East to get more local attention. Newbury is surrounded by such busy roads and a lot of traffic, hope this dog gets home safely
