- So pleased Ziggy is home. The comments here are DogLost in a nutshell. They illustrate the despair and helplessness when a pet is lost, the concern, kindness and practical help of/from others, heart-warming humour during difficult times and the shared relief and joy when a much-loved pet is reunited. Will keep checking for the reunited pic.

- Hi all. After last night's adventure / trauma we are all somewhat rested and almost recovered. Following a bit of a sulk, a lot of clinginess, and even more sleep, Ziggy seems to be 100% and none the worse for a night channeling his inner Bear Grylls.
We're still overwhelmed and touched beyond at how kind and helpful this community is. Just the comfort and reassurance provided at such a stressful time is priceless.
Jasper - thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time and making the effort at such ungodly hours to help complete strangers. It was likely me that you saw in the orchard. I thought I briefly saw a torch but by then I was almost delirious with tiredness and adrenaline so wasn't sure if I imagined it! You're an extremely kind person.
Thanks also to everyone else for their help and advice. I shall certainly be looking at bells and additional training for Ziggy. Although only a recent revelation, the fact he's deaf hadn't seemed to cause us any issues till now, but it's now something we will be extremely mindful of.
We shall post a photo asap of the happy reunified gang, and I look forward to being able to return some karma by helping out myself with missing dogs in my local (NW10) area.
Thanks a million again x - 2016-12-28 18:17 Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex

- So that must have been your torch i could see in the orchard- I thought it might be an angry farmer with a shotgun so legged it in opposite direction! Very pleased that Ziggy turned up safe and well and hope he is none the worse for his little adventure.Such a worry when the little ones go missing especially on such a cold night. Liked the sound of that hip flask though Bo!

- Hi Matt I'm so pleased Ziggy is home. If you follow this link beloe there is an article on page 19, Bells, Balls and Beau, which may give you some tips for training Ziggy if his deafness is a permanent thing.

- Fantastic news....well done guys!...being a Boston owner myself, I know how clever they are and even learnt something myself about frequencies of hearing. Great work everyone xxx

- So pleased to see this young lad in the blue. He's a clever boy to make it back home to a place that isn't familiar to him. You sound a lovely person Matt (so do you Jasper) and it's good to have you on board :)
I have a deaf dog - my second. It makes it more difficult if they lose track of their owner - Pups and Oldies can be particularly unpredictable. You might find that attaching a bell to his collar helps you locate him in future because the sound gives not only a direction but the speed they are travelling.
Hope you and Jasper are able to catch up on some well-earned sleep today.

Search party with whisky flask required for Jasper 😂 - 2016-12-28 06:49 Jasper - Area Volunteer, Somerset
- Very pleased to hear that Matt - you may need to send a search party for me now- I'm in an apple orchard somewhere I think! No I'm ok really!

- It's the other side of the road to the Bible centre (although that area not checked so great that you did).
Hopefully this will link to a dropped pin in Google maps: Dropped pin

- No problem Matt but was I in the wrong place, I am unable to locate it on google earth and getting a signal on my phone was tricky down there. Was i on wrong side of the road?
- 2016-12-28 02:37 matt_smith
- Jasper I am beyond grateful, thank you. If there's one good thing emerging out of a hideous experience it's that strangers can be so very kind

- Mat, I have searched the woods behind the bible centre thoroughly with a good torch to look for eye shine but I fear I was in the wrong place as I didn't come across playing field?I will come out again in morning as early as possible. I'm from Tintinhull unfortunately otherwise I would come out now.

- Hi Baydogs. We only very recently realised Ziggy is deaf so are in the process of working out whether he's good for any frequencies. Sometimes he appears to look up in response to a whistle, but it could just be coincidence.
As you suggested I'm back where I last saw him, wrapped up with flask. No sign though :(
I'm going to stay here until I can begin searching again at light. It's quite a big orchard and I worry he's strayed far.
God this is just the worst feeling. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. - 2016-12-28 01:26 Sue - onestopalldogs

- Matt, is Ziggy profoundly deaf or could he hear the high tones of a squeaky toy? If so, that may help direct him to you.
Do hope that he is soon found.
Remember that lost dogs often return to the place where they became lost.
Leave some worn article that smells of you in that place, also mark that place with your own urine. If you could have someone wait in that place (flask of tea and well wrapped up) it would be ideal.
Have a BBQ there in the morning with sausages and bacon if not found by then - if that is permitted by the landowner.Last edited: 2016-12-28 00:32:05 by Baydogs - 2016-12-27 23:26 matt_smith
- It's okay to go there. Some of it is farm but the farmers are fine with walkers and dogs - it's basically the local woods (although not particularly wooded). I'm so grateful Jasper, this is so devastating we don't know what to do with ourselves.
Fact is we are staying at my mother's place as she's away on holiday and so Ziggy won't have a clue where he is,the poor thing - 2016-12-27 23:07 Jasper - Area Volunteer, Somerset
- Ok thanks , is it ok to go there or is it private property
- 2016-12-27 22:57 matt_smith
- That's so kind. The orchard is behind the park which is off Swan Hill in Haselbury Plucknett (TA18 7NZ)
- 2016-12-27 22:54 Jasper - Area Volunteer, Somerset
- If you can tell me exactly where the orchard is, I would be happy to bring my dog and have a good walk round. Any extra info you can give ?
