Thank you TracyBDCH for the clarification.

TracyBCDH thank you for the update in my eyes you did what you could for this girl ,at the end of the day a micro chip is no good unless kept up to date .At the end of the day the owner did not do enough to find her .
Battersea Dogs HomeBattersea Dogs & Cats HomeTracyBDCH
Please see Battersea statement - Battersea Dogs & Cats Home took in Blossom, a stray American Bulldog from the Hackney dog warden on 12 January, 10 days after she was picked up off the streets on 2 January. There have been many efforts to contact Blossom's owner but very sadly her microchip details were out of date and her owner could not be reached. Hackney Council had had Blossom in their care for ten days whilst they searched for her owner and had tried several times to call the number registered on her microchip with no answer. They had also written to the chipped owner who advised them they no longer owned Blossom and did not have contact details for the new owners.

We'd noticed a serious problem with Blossom's hips on her arrival at Battersea that was affecting her walking and our Vets booked in x-rays with her. These confirmed she had severe hip dysplasia. Arthritis in her front legs also meant her front legs could not fully extend making her very uncomfortable. Our Vets made the decision to put her to sleep on 26 January as her quality of life was so compromised. At this time she had been missing for almost one month and no owner had come forward for her.

Would also like to point out dog is listed as being missing since 10/1/17 but was a council warden since 2/1/17. I'm sorry but i have failed to see a single lost report from 'owner' dated before 1/2/17

Missing Dogs UK The dog was scanned - the chip details were not up to date

I am disgusted to hear this! :( seriously wrong. Why was she not scanned then? Very sad that a young dog has lost her life, because someone can not do their job properly. Think battersea need's to be looking into this big time and find out why the dog was not scanned. Thoughts are with the family!
Michele
Well then Ronmaxtye you do know what a desperate time those first few days, weeks even, are and I am genuinely sorry this has also happened to you. I wouldn't wish it to my worst enemy!

But my point is that not everyone will have the opportunity to register their dog missing on Dog Lost, for many reasons. Perhaps through worry and just don't know where to turn, perhaps, because they aren't internet savvy in the case of a pensioner or perhaps because they are unable to access the Internet in the case of the homeless. Yes there are wonderful people out there that will help and I know of so many Dog Lost admin angels that have helped in cases like these. But for those that don't have this help, days or weeks could realistically go by before they find out who to notify and how.

So yes of course things could have been different in an ideal world but this sadly is not an ideal world, which is why there is a need for sites like Dog Lost.... I just think pointing out the obvious and saying what should have been done does not help the owners or people related to them or the situation. Like you said what's done cannot be undone and yes there are many dogs out there that need everyone's help! And you DL guys are the best team to help and guide us!Last edited: 2017-02-04 19:27:39

Not sure Hollieberry but a possibility. Our BDCH contacts are great and very helpful.
Hollieberry
Sorry Gillyp we both posted at the same time. Its a shame that Blossom was not listed earlier .I have read several posts when the Battersea Dog warden has looked on here to try and identify dogs .
Hollieberry
Had Blossom already been PTS when owner posted as missing ?
Unknown
DogLost and BDCH have a good relationship and they do monitor the pages. Whatever the reasons for putting Blossom to sleep I can imagine the decision wasn't made lightly. We don't know whether owner made a report with Battersea or not but our contact at Battersea will always make it clear on DogLost when a report has been made. Chip details by all accounts were not up to date. Very sad outcome for all.

Unless I have read incorrectly, Blossom had been missing for three weeks. One week with dog warden, and then two weeks with Battersea.

This is a very sad case and obviously no-one but Battersea can know why they took the decision they did. It is very sad for the owner. However, I must say that I have just (a week ago) adopted a dog from Battersea who they have had since October and who had gastric symptoms that worried them and they have spent a lot of money doing surprisingly extensive testing on her to make sure she does not have anything serious going on. Added to that, they have clearly worked very hard with her (she was a stray and had great anxiety issues, particularly about being in kennels), addressing her problems and even giving her quite a bit of basic training. She is an absolutely delightful, obedient dog. I have huge admiration for Battersea. They could have given up on her but they didn't.

I agree 7 days not long enough what if you as an owner are sick or away and some one else is looking after your pet and they un sure who to contact. Like someone else commented first thing you do is to go out and search ringing dog home is not first on.the list. So after 7 days are these dogs put to sleep god hope not . everyone try ensure not to lose your dog if.this is the case at least it could be extended to a bit longer just in case the owner cannot be foundx
Skywalker99
I thought arthritis was an easily manageable condition? BDCH do appear to have acted with undue haste....but the whole system is nuts, 7 days to reclaim your dog is too short. She slipped through the system somehow, but I agree with Michele, the owners deserve some answers.

Michele, i dont propose to go into great details because there is no point, i would just say in answer to your post, i lost my dog which was why i got involved with doglost so i do know what owners go through when this happens, i said if we had been notified earlier because the dog had been missing for 3 weeks before anyone bothered to report it to anyone, therefore i do not think what i said was unfairLast edited: 2017-02-04 16:51:53
NickyB
i should add my romania dog wasnt mine at the time she was lost/abandoned - as i would have been in daily contact with them, stoke dogs home, and my councils 2 kennels as part of the search
NickyB
if blossoms microchip details were correct, and in so many many cases they are not, its very worrying indeed to learn she was euthansised. reading thro comments on doglost i cant see if the chip was correct. i fear it had wrong details on - hence the kennels who had her, in this case battersea, were unable to trace owner. this happens time and time and time again. PLEASE WOULD ALL DOG OWNERS EVERYWHERE BE SURE THEIR DOGS MICROCHIP DETAILS ARE CORRECT.my romanian rescue i adopted was chipped and had all the correct details of previous owner BUT MANCHESTER DOGS HOME HAD HER 11 DAYS BEFORE THEY SCANNED HER -.....................
Michele
I think that the owner has a right to get some answers as to how the system failed them and Blossom. This can't just be a case of, "this sort of things happen, don't be surprised..."

And just in answer to the comment below by an Area Volunteer re if the owner had notified DL sooner, the outcome might have been different, I can't comment on why the owner did not do this specifically of course because I do not know the detail. But as an owner of a missing dog, I think it is unfair to make such a comment, especially by an Area Volunteer... I understand that you have very difficult work to do and do it well as volunteers. But you see this happening everyday. When a dog goes missing, this is usually the only time it happens to an owner. We have NO IDEA what to do and who to go to! Our first instinct is to get out there and Search day and night, not to sit at home and get on Facebook or on a DL site! I had no idea what to do or that there were sites like this - I was beside myself with anguish and out of my mind with worry! Thankfully I contacted someone who knew what to do. But not everyone is as luck as me, in that respect. So a bit of compassion for owners and perhaps some more rounded understanding of the hell they are going through. Oh and finally, my dog is missing still, nearly 8 months on. My life has been turned upside down and I still cry and feel pain over her disappearance. If I were to find out that this had happened to her, it would destroy me. But sure as hell I would wat answers!!

RIP Sweet Blossom and my love goes to her family. Stay strong. Last edited: 2017-02-04 16:46:33
JANI
so very sad, run free sweetie xx
Skywalker99
She would have been with the dog warden before she went tp Battersea, so either warden failed to make a match or she was not reported to them. So either owners had poor advice, or process failed. All very sad whatever happened...Last edited: 2017-02-04 12:42:22 by Skywalker99

This vitriol is so unpleasant. Our rescue centres do an amazing job in extremely hard circumstances and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. Healthy dogs are being pts by rescue centres and dog pounds every day. The post below is inflammatory and belongs on Facebook not D.L

Tragic case so sorry to read this- just wondered -were the microchip details up to date ?

I share everyones concern at what battersea did and i fully agree, however, leaving bad remarks on the page helps nobody like it or not we still have to work with battersea.. The dog was missing for three weeks of which two she was in battersea? they should have sorted it in that time but for whatever reason they did not, if the owner had notified us when it first went missing not after three weeks the outcome might have been different, whats done cannot be undone and there are lots more dogs that need every ones attention, RIP Blossom people failed you badly Last edited: 2017-02-06 16:40:14

What the hell!... Blossom was microchipped so why wasn't her owner contacted?.. This also happened to a beautiful staffie at an RSPCA rescue centre...Her owner had been looking for her for nearly a year...Not once was she contacted to say they had her fur baby..which was put down due to similar problems as Blossom ...RIP beautiful girl..My heart goes out to her owners xxLast edited: 2017-02-04 08:45:01 by Jaycey

I am totally shocked, the tv programme does not portray Battersea like this; I feel that she should have been given a chance: Loads of dogs I know have arthritis and manage it very well with tablets and massage etc. She was a gorgeous looking girl . ... So sad xxx
