- Update by RSPCA "Munchkin’s injuries so extreme she will need skin graft and ear partly removed
The RSPCA is appealing for information after an emaciated Jack Russell puppy with infected dog-bite wounds along her neck, body and head was found wandering Essex streets alone.
We were called on Saturday (March 4) after Munchkin, a female Jack Russell thought to be just under a year-old, was discovered on Tey Road in Colne, near Colchester.
She was in an extremely neglected state and the injuries were so severe she will need skin grafts and potentially the removal of part of her ear in order to recover.
She was rescued by the RSPCA and taken to Catley Cross Vets in Halstead, where she was placed on a drip and given intensive treatment for the wounds - including regular bathing for the wounds with Manuka honey. It is hoped she will make a full recovery and be available for rehoming after this.
RSPCA inspector Kate Fletcher said: “Poor little Munchkin was in a horrific state when we found her - it broke my heart.
“She was emaciated with signs of mange and riddled with fleas - and on top of this had these awful wounds all over her. There are signs of teeth marks so we are pretty sure they were caused by dog bites.
“They are so red raw and infected and she must have been in such pain for quite some time, as the vet thinks they had been there for at least a month given the state of her flesh.
“In some ways she was lucky - just a fraction deeper and the wound would have reached her spinal column which would have been been life threatening. As it is she is doing well and we hope she will make a good recovery after surgery - which will need to include skin grafts and the removal of her ear because the damage done is so extreme.
“We are incredibly grateful to Catley Cross vets in Halstead, who were so touched by Munchkin’s story they offered to do the surgery she needs for free. We are also very grateful to the Veterinary Wound Library for donating the bandages and medication she will need.
“It is always heartbreaking when we find sad cases like this, but wonderful when people’s responses are so generous.”
Inspector Fletcher added: “We do not know how Munchkin came to be all alone in this terrible state.
“She does not have a microchip and we don’t know whether she was abandoned or escaped from somewhere after being bitten by the dog.
“Whichever the case is, she had been suffering for quite some time. Her short little life has so far been one of a lot of pain, but she has been an absolute angel all the way through.
“She is still wagging her tail, winning over anyone who meets her.”
The RSPCA urges anyone with any information about where Munchkin may have come from to call us on 0300 123 8018, in the strictest confidence.
Anyone wanting to help the RSPCA rescue animals like Munchkin should text LOVE to 87023 to give £3 (Text costs £3 + one standard network rate message)." - 2017-03-10 21:44 Phoebe

thanks to doglost.co.uk for letting us know about her plight. cant offer her a home but its nice to be able to send a donation as the RSPCA yet again try to find the monsters who did this, and also care for her and find a new home - 2017-03-09 09:14 Lydia
- So sad! Iam crying my eyes out for this poor poor furbaby, who could do this, hope you make a fully recovery what a sweet little dog
- 2017-03-09 06:19 LindaT
- Poor sweet baby, however the dog-bite has happened it is clear she has been neglected, thank god she has been picked up by good people and I would imagine she will have a queue of people falling for her and wanting to adopt, she is in safe hands from now-on thankfully ... I do hope there may be cctv in the area she was found? or at least the authorities will do their utmost to find out who is responsible. As has been said below, it may be that an owner has been searching for some time, the microchip law may not have been in place when/if she went missing and so this could be why she hasn`t got one?
- 2017-03-08 23:56 Marbie
- This poor little sweetheart has probably been stolen and used as a bait dog. Thank God she will be safe now, my heart goes out to her x
- 2017-03-08 21:22 Unknown

- NickyB?? Me too. Poor baby girl needs all the help she can get
Did you find out where we can donate to cover her medical treatment?
Please advise me NickyB.
What I can't get my head round is the fact that this tiny little girl appears to have been 'wandering' for some time - and NOBODY saw her?? Not one person!!
Could this possibly be because she's been 'hidden' ??

- Hi Christine, although they say she has no microchip, it is common for these to be missed or migrate, particularly in her condition so I would recommend calling the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018 who will be able to help you check for sure, good luck x

- That`s so kind of you Carol. At least safe, and will be "Sorted out" Hope owner is found, and named, and shamed Thanks RSPCA for taking care of her. Is it possible that this dog, and the other one Carol mentioned could have been used as Dog bait; hence the wounds?

- Full report: The RSPCA is appealing for information after an emaciated Jack Russell puppy with infected dog-bites was found wandering alone near Colchester.
The charity was called on Saturday (March 4) after Munchkin, a female Jack Russell thought to be just under a year-old, was discovered on Tey Road in Colne.
She was in an extremely neglected state and the injuries were so severe she will need skin grafts and potentially the removal of part of her ear in order to recover.
She was rescued by the RSPCA and taken to Catley Cross Vets in Halstead, where she was placed on a drip and given intensive treatment for the wounds
Poor little Munchkin was in a horrific state when we found her - it broke my heart. “She was emaciated with signs of mange and riddled with fleas - and on top of this had these awful wounds all over her. There are signs of teeth marks so we are pretty sure they were caused by dog bites.
– RSPCA INSPECTOR KATE FLETCHER
The RSPCA say Munchkin should make a good recovery after surgery. It's thought she could have suffered the wounds a month ago.
“She does not have a microchip and we don’t know whether she was abandoned or escaped from somewhere after being bitten by the dog.
“She is still wagging her tail, winning over anyone who meets her.”
The RSPCA urges anyone with any information about where Munchkin may have come from to call us on 0300 123 8018.
