A brindle lurcher found. Doesn’t look like white paws but photos can be misleading

Always silently surfing Dog Lost and checking in on Ziggy and my Maggie - 12 looooooooong years since they both vanished, never forgotten, thank you Reynard, made me cry to think you are still thinking of us all XXX

Hi guys. 2019. 12 years...I know he’s long gone (he’d be 19-22 years old now!) but it’s so lovely of you to bump him out of kindness and love. DogLost, SoL, the sighthound community and dog rescue community all did their utmost to find him. His oil painting is still one of my most treasured possessions and many hounds have been helped by us since, because of his loss. Thank you all, for everything. Remembering Ziggy and all lost pets, with love always

This morning tv programme have posted this on their website....

This Friday we’re intending to feature an item on missing pets. So if you’ve lost a pet, or think you’ve had one stolen, let us know and we might be able to feature them in our missing pets gallery. Email thismorning@itv.com with some good shots of your missing pet and a few details that might help: when you last saw your pet, any distinguishing marks, habits or characteristics. Maybe it was wearing a particular collar. We need your emails by 5.00pm Thursday the 10th May. http://www.itv.com/thismorning/life/reuniting-lost-pets-with-owners/

The not knowing must be awful for you and a feeling I can only imagine. There are many of us who are always looking out for your lovely Ziggy and always will be xx
ZiggysMum
Meeka, hugs back and I'm sorry for every person that goes through it, and for those who say "it's just a dog" I feel pity; Janey that's so so sad, sorry love (if Ziggy's found sitting on someone's sofa well loved and eating pies, then I'd perhaps consider not taking him away, as long as he's happy) and to Sue, thank you that's much appreciated - you're amazing people all of you xxxx

I'll put adverts for both Ziggy and Maggie in The Countrymans Weekly asap
Meeka
Hey Vicki, (my heart skipped a beat when Ziggy's photo flashed up) - I still often think of Ziggy as he and my Maggie disappeared almost at the same time - too many questions unanswered, it's the unknown that scares us. I hope our two, and many others, wherever they are are loved and cherished as much as we would have done, big hugs to you Vicki and hopefully one day we'll all have our prayers answered.
hello janey
its so sad reading this after all this time,,I knew your pain for only 8 days,,we got ours back,,only to pass away 12 days later due to being lost,,,the sadness is heart wrenching,,but at least we thank god we got closure, and are not left in limbo like you and so many others, I would like to think Ziggy is living happily within a family oblivious to your loss x

ZiggysMum
Four and a half years, almost - and not a day, not one single day, goes by without my wondering what happened to my lovely dog. If he died, was it quick; if someone took him, did they love him? Maybe it's good that I don't know. But I won't forget him, nor the support I got from DogLost, Lurcher Link and many more. I still have Louie; the foster girlie I got to help him deal with his loneliness is sitting at my feet as I type; and there are two more with me now. All rescues, all content. If Ziggy was found he'd be back in this pack in a heartbeat. Til one day when I WILL see him again, I'll thank him for the time I had him here to love and make me laugh .

Vickie, I feel so much for you. My Sarafina has been gone 7 weeks but it seems like 7 years. I haven't given up on her. I got a reporter to do a story on her up here and have gotten some calls and sightings, but she seems to always be one step ahead of me. I really hope Ziggy comes home to you real soon. Stay safe Ziggy. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well Ive had a bit of a look but there are so many they all start too look alike after a while - Ive found Ziggys page on LurcherLink under Lost and Found, perhaps Ziggys mum could bump him up with a comment then the actual Lurcher folk will get another look at him - didnt have a side on shot on his page so that might jog some memories. I would do it but Im not registered, just a lurker, else Id end up with a 4th dog.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Vikki, where are all the years going?  It does not seem that long since he went missing.  You are a one in million owner and truly deserve to find your lovely Ziggy.  We have had a good few on DL being reunited years later via their Chip and also being matched with a found one on other sites.  Will be saying a prayer for you that your dream will come true.  Hugs and kisses.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I can about bear to look at this site again - the pain of losing Ziggy has taken over 2 years to become bearable.  My boy was never found - no trace.  He's probably gone, but just in case - I'd love to even know he's alive and being cared for, and he's always, always in our thoughts.

Another day of false starts crossed wires and sheer nastiness - funny how it goes - quiet then loads at once. Most likely sighting of this bunch was on the Carrs near Framwellgate Moor - many thanks to rescue_mum for her help traipsing around in circles. You are all so lovely - thanks for all your support. Well, the germs are nearly defeated. Not my chosen way to lose a few pounds, but very effective. On the Ziggy front I've had a possible sighting from the Lanchester road - a description of a big brindle greyhound that 'popped' over two high five bar gates last Sunday - that sounds about his style :-) but also some false leads from the Ushaw Moor and Brandon area where there is a very nervous small grey/brown/black brindle greyhound wearing a red-brown collar on the roam. If I get chance to help catch it, I will. Meanwhile I'm waiting to hear from the Evening Chronicle who may run an article on Ziggy. People keep suggesting I get him on the Paul O'Grady show, but I was wondering if Buddy would be better for that. May have been done already as I don't watch it. As an aside, I do agree with Bruce Forsyth's campaign (VetsGetScanning.co.uk) - so simple and would return so many dogs to their owners.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Vikki, I guess you fell off the wagon shortly after we proudly confessed to each other that we'd been so strong and not brought home another pup at the weekend!! Good on ya girl, hope she settles in well. You never know, if Ziggy's still roaming about locally, the scent of Louie's new lady friend, whilst out walking, might encourage him to show himself!! Ziggysmum, sorry you have the dreaded lurgy, get well soon. Very pleased to see the lad is in Countryman's Weekly. A number of dogs on this site have been reunited as a direct result of the CW. Good for you, taking in a foster hound. We know you aren't giving up but doing everyone a favour here considering the pressure on rescues at present. And I am sure you will feel more positive if Louie isn't doing a woe-is-me face at you. If you end up with 3, so be it - the sighthounds do fold up quite tidily when they lie down, which seems to be a lot of the time :-)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi folks, sorry I'm quiet, got the lurgy. The good thing about my tiny bathroom is, I can do sink and loo simultaneously... Well, have had a couple more false leads but nothing else. I'm getting a little foster greyhound bitch at the weekend, I hope - it feels traitorous and like I'm giving up - I'm SO not, but Louie is really missing canine company, and if it takes one out of kennels, at least it's helping. I'm hoping sods law says that'll bring my boy back and the whole house will be taken over by 3 gangly hounds!! Getting some great help from local people with the postering, just not up to doing much til I get well. Scuse me, bathroom beckons...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

POSSIBLE SIGHTING - dog of his size and description was seen at 11am in the Stack Garth area of Brandon village. Drive through tonight shows nothing but if anyone is in that area please keep an eye out. That is the second uncolloborated sighting from Brandon, the earlier one being near the Wok Inn on Brandon Lane. Has poor Louie got a nice green ear now. Don't do what I did with my golden retriever and bath him, all the side of his head ended up green, how embarrasing takng him out etc, he was the very pale cream colour goldie and was only a baby. Keep checking on Ziggy and waiting for him to go into the BLUE. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Aw! Poor Louie, what a big baby. I'm sure his ear will stop smarting soon, unless he realises it gets him extra sympathy/hugs/treats then it might just start being a little bit hurty again! Well, got up at 4am and watered Belmont with hoover bag soup. Talked to dog walkers and milkmen etc - no sightings but at least it felt like doing something. Had calls today, variously placing a dog of similar description in Brandon, Lanchester, and Gilesgate, some more plausible than others. Just keeping phoning and networking and postering with all your support to keep me going. I also took Louie for his ear tattoo. He threw a hissy fit of legendary proportions - I'm sure he'll stop sulking by tomorrow..Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, you have done an enormous amount in just three weeks and everything humanly possible to find Ziggy. Ignore the people who don't understand. Ziggy's page has been viewed two and a half thousand times and those are people who do understand and want to see Ziggy turn to blue. Good luck for today. XXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

3 weeks today since my life was turned on it's head. I swear, the next person who says "it's just a dog" will live to regret it but possibly not for very long! Today has been allotment day - have talked to loads of people, and am very much hoping they can help find him - it's people with working dogs that Ziggy might naturally gravitate to if he sees them. We're also heading out at 4am with hoover bag soup, as someone reckons someone else saw a dog like him, two nights running at 5am in the same place, two weeks ago. All the sightings I get are so third hand and out of date! Still, can't discount it. Got the police dog handlers watching areas too. They have one of his used blankets in a sealed bag, in case they get chance to track. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi all, no not me with the cage - that's probably a white lurcher with brindle patches - a feral stray that's been living around the Belmont area of Durham since the summer and has defied every attempt to be caught despite a leg injury. Ironically, I can tell you all about it's movements as I get about 5 calls a week from people hoping it's mine. It goes through Gilesgate School, Buckingham Road and out onto the Scrambles most mornings. Have postered some bits of Spennymoor but ran out of free day (very frustrating to have to do other things!). Also got a contact for details of flapping tracks, will poster them later this afternoon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Too right thanks - I think I'd have gone mad without you all. By the way I was the one who was sitting on an aisle in soft drinks in Tesco this aft crying my eyes out. Wouldn't have been so bad if I'd made it to wines and spirits... Anyway, to recap - ran from Framwellgate Moor - into the estate near Vets4Pets, direction impossible to determine. OOH, UPDATE! POSSIBLE PROGRESS: Just had call from lady in Spennymoor who saw a dog of his description in St Andrews Lane, Spennymoor (DL16 6QA or thereabouts). She saw this dog on two seperate days, once first thing, once 3pm so will go over first thing tomorrow and have a scout about and poster madly. Just one bit of luck, that's all I need.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

yes I'll certainly help... i've got quite a few printed off, and have given some to family. I've also emailed through to relatives at Nevilles Cross at Durham, they have greyhounds, so i'm sure they'll pass on details too.... I did see a dog running like crazy around bonfire night from the Hetton to East Rainton Road (Robney Road i believe its called), but the colours were darker and i dont think there was the white on the chest.... I tried following and turned the car around as the dog seemed very distressed, but it just took off, just hope that one went home, i dont think it was Ziggy, but i've tormented myself by it since, bit late to be mentioning this, but thought i'd better. I've been that route many times since and not seen it. I'll go over to Rainton tomorrow anyway and ask if they'll put a poster in the shop window. Where in Durham did Ziggy go missing from?, you might have mentioned previously, i'll have to look back at these posts again. Denise x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

"BRINDLE LURCHER/GREYHOUND, involved in accident newcastle.Hi the above dog was ivnolved in a road accident near newcastles town moor,,not sure of any more details" - this was on the lost and found forum on huntinglife.com and ive since learned that the chap who put the post up is a fireman and was going to try and make enquiries, bless im. I need a volunteer. Help. Angie (Buddy's mate Angie that is) kindly rang me this morning to say she's seen mention that the stray which caused a fatality (on the B1318 in Newcastle around 19th/20th) was described on The Hunting Life as a brindle lurcher. Neither of us can now find that reference and I can't face ringing them. It's unlikely that Ziggy would be in that area, not because of distance but it's just not a logical journey IF he made it himself. Not only don't I know how best to approach the authorities in a sensitive way given the relevant inconsequence of who the poor dog was - I actually can't face doing it. How the hell would u deal with that guilt? Is there anyone more together than me who would be willing to try to do some tactful investigation? So sorry to ask, but it's got my head in bits.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, are you saying someone had hold of him and let him go? I can't believe it !!! But that probably leads us to believe what we are saying is probably true. So where, quite nearby, to you, and to that sighting, could, or would he take refuge? You have to 'think dog' here. Also, if he let someone get hold of him, he is likely to be bold enough to be around the houses quite a bit, or may be in someones garden. You need to deliver small posters through all letterboxes. Where exactly was this sighting ? I am emailing you a list of Durham contacts- mostly telephone numbers, but you can ring for email addies. May give you a few more ideas any way. (Not that you are short on ideas at all) If you havn't done so already get posters up in the local Community Centres. This is a brilliant place to reach hundreds of people. Well done. He will be in the blue soon xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well I'm working along those lines which is a comfort that I've got the right idea - but fabulous suggestions - thanks! I've got the local Fram Pizza staff on standby as he's been known to try to haul me in there more than once! The chippy are on Ziggy alert too. I've got credit card sized info now which I dish out to everyone I can - am re-postering where they've been taken down. He'll be in the Durham Times (free paper) on Friday. Have tried Metro Radio and Durham fm (No and No) and can say Sainsburys and most petrol stations are just as miserable (we couldn't set a precedent now, could we!) My vets are doing a grand job, and my daughter and neph-nieces are flyering the schools for all they're worth. Got BT engineers looking, police dog handlers, police bike section, loads of staff from work, Durham Fire & Rescue, Police CSOs, half the County Council... Been stalking the housing estate like a kerb crawler, too. WHERE THE HECK IS HE??!!!! Just had a more-credible-than-usual sighting about 500 yards from the house three days after he went missing - the guy had hold of him but thought he had just been booted out of a house for a wee. He was stood about 20 yards from a poster. May I scream please? At least it means that in 3 days he had stayed local. I need food, catch u soon and as ever THANK YOU!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Good ideas there. I agree, I feel very strongly he could be still in the area. Have looked on google earth, and although it is quite built up, it's lovely for scavenging rubbish, around houses, businesses, etc, there is also large areas of woodland or shrubbery not too far from home, so plenty of good shelter and rabbits there. Did not see any streams, but garden ponds and dripping taps a possibility. Fast food places are always a magnet for loose dogs. Hand out small posters to dog walkers around those woodland areas, and wherever you walked him. Also poster around childrens play areas and schools. Children are good little helpers and will put flyers through doors for a little bit of money. He could very easily be in someone's garden. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had an idea Vikki - tell me it's rubbish if you like but here goes... Try staking out the local fast food places (there's a pizza hut etc over on the Arnison retail park isn't there?), maybe the local chippy, chinese, you know places like that. Find out what time they put their rubbish out at night and camp out in the car round the back by the bins. If Ziggy's still in the area, and it's quite possible he hasn't gone very far but isn't ready to come home yet, the smell of fresh scraps may entice him - if he's managed to scavenge a few tasty morsels already he may come back regularly! Dish out a few flyers to the staff, get them looking out for him but not to try and catch him as this might scare him off. It might be worth a try! By the way, do you have neighbours keeping an eye out for him while you're out looking in case he does come home while you're out. Maybe put some food by the back and door and leave out a toy/blanket/piece of your clothing with your scent on to encourage him to stay a while till you get back. Really hope all your hard work is gonna pay off soon. love Linz x Have PMd you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You won't even care if he cocks his leg on the christmas tree this year as long as he's home! Sounds like he was used to a bit of the 'great outdoors' so I'm sure his survival instincts have kicked in! Willing him home to you with all my might - stay safe Ziggy and stay strong Vikki xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well, he is partial to a carrot! No sightings today but going back tomorrow (guess who has been so addled by this, the icing on top of a lousy lousy year, that she is not able to function at work) and doing more poking around. Fingers crossed that the Zigster turns up before the P45 does....... Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh ZiggysMum, how maddening that some people treat their dogs lives so casually when to us they are so very precious. I hope the allotment dog turns out to be your boy and how wonderful that someone has donated such a generous reward. Let's hope it does the trick. SueLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just got back from postering both Hartlepool Vets, found a pet shop next door to one of them so they got one as well! Then went off to do Pets at Home. What a wonderful gesture from our anonymous friend regarding the reward. Good luck with the Brandon allotments Vikki, hope it's Ziggy (does he like leeks and marrows? LOL) xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A frustrating morning - drove like a mad woman up to Harelaw (near Annfield Plain) on a certain sighting of Ziggy causing traffic chaos - it was an entire dog very similar to him, a deep cut on its back leg and very scared. Louie and a packet of ham lured him in eventually, whereupon some silly mare waltzed up and went "he's always out, c'mon Gyp" and led him off. No ID - clearly he'll be out again tomorrow and so on until someone runs the poor boy over. Cried my eyes out with sheer frustration. Anyway, going up to Brandon now - dog of that description seen in allotments last Sunday. Any prizes for "catching the most strays, not your own"..? If anyone is registered on Lurcher Link, Sighthounds Online Greyhound GAP or Greyhound Rescue.net and has a minute, would they be very kind and cross post this into Ziggy's threads? Don't register specially, I can always do it later. PS Someone local who I shall not name without permission has put up a ?500 reward for my boy's safe return. I am simply stunned, and so grateful.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hey Vikki, that is what we are here for to help and give you support. We know it is a very trying time for you especially when time goes on and he is not home with you, but with determination you will get him back as long as you are keeping up with the checking of authorities, Police. rescue kennels and the postering. Great that Ziggy is chipped, which has proven too many times that it is the best present you can give your much loved boy. Keep on going. Jan x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You buggers, am crying again now, just at the sheer kindness and generosity of you all - you're keeping me going. I wasn't much good at work today but did get some emails sent off - the Evening Chronicle, Hartlepool News and Teesdale Mercury requesting stories, plus lost and found ads and some more dog clubs and hunting type websites. I've got a bit of my resolve back now, sorry - it's been a shock not finding him quickly - guess I was naive! Not giving up by a long way... thank you all so very much. rescue_mum, thanks, but seeing as you are in that area, and he may have been sighted there, would be better to take posters in as sometimes emails dont get opened for a couple of days or so, which is why where I have both, I am doing faxes as well, and at least I know they've got it then. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have altered posters to mention possible Hartlepool sighting and emailed to friends/relatives in the town. I also work in Hartlepool and have distributed mini-flyers to all my colleagues. Will keep my eyes open for your boy Ziggy on my travels to and from work - have got a spare lead, a nice warm blanket and some treats in the glove box! I got your PM Ziggysmum, with your email address. I?m well on with the vets now, and am contacting 90 that are nearest, so lots of posters going up in waiting rooms all over, so not only the staff will be on alert, but lots of clients will be made aware. The good news he is microchipped, so every chance he will be scanned and you will get a call. It is quite possible he has not travelled too far from where he originally ran from, as often dogs will double back, and try to pick up a scent. I?m sure he will be holed up somewhere he feels safe and where he can find water and some sort of food. Perhaps a shed, or stable. These type of dogs are extremely good at surviving for weeks or months on their own, and although its been bad this week with continued bursts of fireworks, hopefully next week will be calmer, and he may decide to show himself. Every single poster you manage to put out, could be the one which brings him home, so always have some with you, especially the smaller ones to hand out. When I?ve done the vets I?ll see who else can be emailed and think of some other ideas. Another day tomorrow. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, you are doing brilliantly in your search for Ziggy. I deliver the Merseymart which is a free local paper in Liverpool, Merseyside. Each week there are lots of leaflets to be delivered with it. It may worth getting some of the small posters printed and paying to get them delivered with what ever free local paper is delivered in the areas you want to target. Or approach a company that just do leaflet deliveries. If you could not go the direct route to paper, then try and find out who actually delivers the paper etc and give them say ?5.00. Hope this helps and everyone is rooting for Ziggy to come home and go into the BLUE. If you need any further advice on the leaflet distribution just send me a p.m. Jan x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, you must be exhausted after this last week and feeling low as your efforts have not yet got your boy home. Maybe you won't have as much time from next week but if he turns up at a rescue he is chipped and it sounds like you're doing a grang job with postering. There are lots of people on here who trawl the web everyday trying to match up missing dogs and Ziggy is very distinctive. Really hopig you get a lead soon. Sue Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Another day with nothing at all. It's only just above freezing out there. I don't know what to do now. I'm a single parent, was on leave last week and my daughter was at her dad's but it's back to work and parenting tomorrow - no time and no big circle of helpers who can get out there for me. I'm just really despondent.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If Ziggy does get picked up in Hartlepool and the dog warden misses his tag/chip, he'll be taken to Low Fallowfield Farm Kennels in South Hetton same as Easington District - number as before. Fingers, toes, paws, everything crossed he's back soon xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, you are doing brilliant and you will have times when you feel low, it is the not knowing where he is that hurts most, a lot of us on here have been there. But we are sure with the postering etc you will get more sightings and will be able to pin point what area he is in. Rooting for you. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

OK if you PM me your email address I will send you the list when I've done. I'll get cracking tomorrow and finish listing tonight. You need to get in front of the dog with posters, but I know it's difficult when you don't know which way he's gone, so you have to go in every direction. Print off hundreds, and get family and friends involved. Get as many as you can up everywhere, and especially where lots of people go. Then you will get more sightings coming in. I think once he has found a safe place where he has a food and water supply, he will settle around there more. You are probably feeling low due to tiredness and worry, so get your friends involved and get those posters out. Sunday tomorrow - sports centres, football training, supermarkets, dog walking areas- give the handouts out. Keep on until you have told everyone. The sightings will come. Stay safe Ziggy. Thank you Sue - Suggs isn't Ziggy but appreciate your text. Have had a call with a possible sighting on Tues/Wed in Langley Park, a village near Durham - trail cold now but have postered some more. Another possibility at Belmont, same day - have postered there too. Got to go back to work next week, going to be tough not being able to work on finding him...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum - you've probably already checked your local council pounds and kennels but have you tried contacting Low Fallowfield Farm Kennels at South Hetton, this is where dogs picked up in Easington District are taken and it's not too far from you. Tel 0191 526 1829 or 07932 039647. Sunderland Council Dog Wardens take dogs to Cleadon Kennels 0191 529 2369. Hope you get good news about Ziggy soon xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ZiggysMum, I have replied to your pm. If you go on google.co.uk and put in whatever it is you want to find i.e. horse riding stables and then Durham you will find ones in the area which you may recognise, also dog training clubs etc. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ziggy's going to be in the Northern Echo soon, I hope. Still not a peep on his whereabouts - I'll just keep pushing to keep the profile up locally. Have emailed a few racehorse trainers and dog clubs but if anyone has contacts like that, or say riding stables etc, would they spread the word please?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Did look similar - but Ziggy's a little darker on his right side than his left, more black stripes. His defining feature is that the white skin under the white area on his nose is in a diamond shape (Ziggy Starnose...). I've spent all evening laminating posters and consoling his pal Louie - it still hasn't sunk in that he's gone.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
