There is quite a real possibility the dog seen was not our Bess - talked to the shop owner in the village early this morning who told us of a man in the village that lost his lurcher dog yesterday afternoon. He found his late last night, but as all the sightings were reported at the same time as this dog went missing it is very possible that it was not our Bess but his dog. Apparently they look very similar...and without wanting to accuse the man of anything, i'd like to see his dog as no one could tell us how long this person has had their lurcher...

Tootall this is great, and what I expected may happen. She is staying around that area. What you will need to do now is to continue to smother the surrounding area with posters. More sightings will then come in as she shows herself. Plot the sightings onto an ordnance survey map as you will need to work out the route she is travelling in order to make a safe place for her to return to, and pick up food. You will also have to do some serious scenting, so please PM me your email address in order that scenting instructions may be given to you. It will not be a case of just calling her, and she will come I'm afraid. In fact if any of you see her, please do not in anyway chase her. This is very important as she could run straight into danger. By all means make gentle noises she will recognise, maybe singing or laughing, or a favourite squeeky toy. Have a slip lead ready, that you can slip easily over her head, if she shows herself, but do not approach her. You must turn and walk the other way, still singing or speaking her name quietly. Hopefully she will come to you then. This will not necessarily happen all in one go, and could take quite a few days. Be prepared for this, and do not try to rush it. You will get her home. Good luck now for further sightings.

Sighting in Little Weighton, just down the road from Walkington only 3 hrs ago. Lady convinced it's her. My sister and girlfriend gone straight out to look as i am at work. Fingers crossed guys....please keep your eyes peeled in that area.

Totall thank you for the update and I'm sorry to hear no news. You really need to get the word out here now its weekend. I cannot stress this enough, that you will probably need hundreds of posters in plastic pockets with the opening at the bottom to protect from rain. Place them wherever most people go, and where dog walkers will see them. Also hand them out to dog walkers and postmen. To get Bess back you need to get hundreds of eyes looking, thus the suggestion of schools etc. Children will always look out for a lost dog whilst walking their own. Try the local newagent or post office, chip shop and supermarket. Lets get her in the blue. Any other helpers in this area that could possibly spare a little time at the weekend? Bess needs to be home now.

Tootall, this is really good news. Walkington is not that very far at all and if this sighting was her, which sounds very possible, she is probably staying within that area. Posters need to be everywhere. Try to think of places where a poster will have maximum impact. Where many people go, pass, or work. Schools for example. Poster outside them, but speak to the head teacher and ask for posters to be displayed on notice boards inside. Walkington Primary- 01482 861115 Fax 01482 8711118. The Agricultural College. There are so many staff travelling to and from work, plus students. Public houses where people gather. The Ferguson Fawsitt Arms tele/fax 01482 882665 ~ The Dog and Duck 01482 881622, and many more. You will probably have to beg the manager to display a poster, or put near the car park. All Hallows Church I'm sure will help. Ask them to display a poster on their notice board. Contact any stables, riding schools, equestrian/ animal feed places in the area and put up posters. Had another call from someone in Walkington that says she thinks she saw a dog like bess wandering around 'in an aggitated state' a day or two after the other sighting. She kindly offered to poster the area and tell folks to keep an eye out. We've been back up there with our other dogs to try and get a scent or something...but no sign. She may be long gone by now. It's a shame these people don't phone as soon as they have sighted the dog and not 5 days later... :(

Had a call today from someone who thinks they saw her in WALKINGTON. He said he saw her at 10 am this morning but didn't phone me until 5pm and by then there was no sign of the dog. He said that it was definately without an owner and was running around near the playing fields. He approached the dog and said that there was a black greyhound type collar on it but rather than there being a metal ID tag (like Bess had)there was a leather box-like holder with the ID, although he didn't get hold of it to have a look (!) Please keep an eye out in this area if you are local...it could well be our Bess. If she was taken by someone it could be that they have just changed the ID tag over and she's got free/been let loose.

No it's gone quiet again apart from someone ringing (a week later!) to say that he saw her the same day she went missing very close to where she vanished. We went back up there to have another hunt around but there was no sign.

Got a picture message from a kind lady today who thought she'd seen Bess in a Wakefield Kennels. I shot straight off and although it really did look like Bess, it unfortunately wasn't. Thanks to that lady (you know who you are) Sorry i didn't call back to let you know, but i lost your number.

Can i just make it clear that the poster says Bess WAS sighted for definate - we stillhaven't got a positive i.d. on this sighting so until then as far as we are concerned she may well be anywhere else....don't mean to be picky, but at the same time we want people to be aware it may not have been her. PS the other black dog was also a lurcher breed.

Sorry - spelling mistake - Great Hatfield. Sister spoke to someone who knows that area very well and all the dog owners around there and she says she has never seen these two dogs before, and like i say they were just running free in fields. Unfortunately no one has been able to catch them. Fingers crossed though. Going to search/poster out there as soon as i can.

Forgot to say that Bess is spayed too. Contacted everywhere within a 10 mile radius, but will put up more posters in a widser area and inform other neighbouring DW's etc. Thanks folks.

Tootall, welcome on board Doglost, sorry that Bess is missing. Great that you have registered and are updating helpers. Make sure you contact DW, Police, if you border another Council ensure you also inform their DW etc and as many kennels in the surrounding areas as possible. Do visit in person at least once a week and leave a poster. You need to poster, poster, poster as far an area as possible. Brilliant that Bess has been CHIPPED. Jan x

I work with several people who live in beverley, I'll put up a poster in the staffroom and tell them to keep their eyes open. Hope shes home safe soon xx
