I hav e had 4 Greek dogs two of which tested positive for Lerishmania and were put on alopurinol before they showed any symptoms another dog tested negative before she came over but developed the disease two years after she arrived,consequently the symptoms were missed until the disease was more advanced.She was put on milteforan which I got from Greece,This was successful and she was the put on alopurinol She was 8 when she got the disease and lived until she was 15.There have been a number of Greek dogs in my area and the local vets know much more about leishmania now and are very good at diagnosing and treating it now.Alopurinol can affect the kidneys long team so they may need to be monitored Good luck.The Greek dogs are really lovely!

Note to Rocky's owners: I see Rocky is on twice daily medication for his Leishmania - presumably allopurinol (Soluric). Do you know about Milteforan (miltefosine - generic name)? Vets in Southern Europe (and USA) have been using this for dogs with leishmania with some success. I had a dog I rescued from Greece who turned out to have Leishmania and her Greek vet put her on this (it is a 28-day course of a liquid medication, from memory) when it was in its early days - he felt she was a good candidate to try it out (she'd been on allopurinol until then). She had it, a year or so later she came to UK (so no reinfection with sandfly bites thereafter) and she lived another 8 years, having to be put to sleep at the age of 13, nearly 14, and not having been troubled by any Leishmania symptoms during that time. Not sure if you can get it in UK (it is about time one could) but maybe can get it abroad? Vets in UK know very little about Leishmania because we haven't got the sandflies here yet (but they are in Channel Islands so not long before we have them too).
