- I agree with Doglady regarding the 7 day law. It is quite harsh. This poor (now lucky) dog was obviously someones pet, it obviouslyhadn't been out on the stret very long judging by the size of him. It possibly was an elderly persons dog who does not have a family or friends that could help. There are lots of scenario's that could hinder not finding him within the seven days. As for compulsory chipping well, as Doglady says who on earth is going to regulate this. Councils are strapped for cash because they spend it on worthless causes. Tattooing is a far better bet to identify your dog, it cannot get lost can it( yes I know there are cases of disfigurement) but that is even fraught with pitfalls. People don't even scan for chips so how can you expect these people to check for a tattoo. There are a lot of people working in the animal world as a means to an end and they do not really care about the animals. Nonetheless I am really glad this lad has a new forever home and that he is treated with respect concerning his 'chubbiness'. Stay safe now boy, the open road is not the life for you. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- fionap if you look at SPARKYS page now re-united after such a long time, even tho he had a tattoo he was re-homed and the rescue had failed to pick this up, and this also happens with chips, so this is my point about the seven day rule and why I thing a contract should be put in place when re-homeing and the people who have just given the dog back to the owners have proved my point that there are people willing to return dogs back to loving owners. and just because a owner for what ever reason dose not tag and chip dose not mean they do not love the dog or indeed not derive to have it back, Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- fionap58 a little bit harsh I feel as this dog could belong to an elderly person it is clearly loved if it is over weight and and the person who as lost this dog may not have been given the right advise to how to go about finding him, they may just have gone to the police and we all know they do not always give the owner the right advise. Also you could chip your dog and it can move or can be past, and yes a tag is always good to but a lot of owners take colliers off when the dog as come home form a walk. and not all are tag even tho it is a law that they should be, even lovely Jack the GSD who as just been found by his owner who work hard to find him but had an idea where he was, he was not tag. And as for making chip law along with tag, who will police this and how, not all dogs are found by the police, and if they can not police people driving when using a mobil phone what good would it do. The only way that people will learn is a sight like this and I feel this as educated more owners then anyone else. Me for one would be happy to re-home and if the owner come froward and I could see that this dog was much loved would be more then happy to give it back after all it is just like fostering in a way at least the dog was not kept in kennels. - I for one would be heartbroken to have to give a dog up after having it for 3 months. Better to make it law that all dogs are chipped then if they are found straying and are not chipped the owners don't deserve to have them back.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- BassetsRUS I agree with the rapid re-home but if owners do not tag and chip and the dog is in Kennels and is luck to have been chosen for re-homing not a lot can be done, the only thing I feel is that the 7 days is to short for anyone to find a dog, but if the law would change and they ask rescues to may be have a claws that if owners come froward after three months then they must let the dog return to it's owner but they must prove they have been looking for the dog. and I'm sure a lot of people who do re-home would be happy with that arrangement and it would not put them off of given a dog a lovely new home. - Great this old boy has a new home and he's out of kennels/bad weather ...... but I hope an owner isn't still out there hoping to get him back. I see he was 'found' on the 30 December so maybe he'd been out for a while before he was picked up. Still feel it's a rather rapid rehome?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
