- Rockleys mum, maybe when you are strong enough you will feel able to write to the railways and voice your distress personally. It may just help a little should there be a next time in that area, if the railworkers are educated. Little by little we can make a difference in different ways including petitions. We do have areas of the railway where they do take time to respectfully treat a fatality. Little by little we will win. Run free at the bridge Rockley. Sue x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Thank you all so much for your kind messages of support they have meant so much to us as a family and helped us to deal with this dreadful loss we have suffered. I must please now do my bit back for anyone who is now in the same position we were in this time last week. This evening my husband received a call from a lady who had seen one of our posters and had been looking out for our Rockley. She said that she had found a large black male dog, I presume in the local Mid sussex ( tel code 01444 )area, she doesn't know what sort as up until our appeal for Rockley she has always been a cat person but she thought that there may be a possibilty this may have been Rockley. We know now that it isn't but he has a red nylon collar and a lump on one of his ears she has passed him on to we are sure she said Mid sussex Dog warden unfortunately I know no more information than this but I hope that it can help someone locate their own much loved pet. Thank you again everyone for your kind words. They mean so much.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- This is so sad to read. I remember sitting with tears streaming down my face at Jesters story from when it happened. The campaign to make the councils do more to notify owners when it is possible- ie tags, collars, microchips has been a hard fought one. Rockley will hopefully not had suffered & is now in a place of happiness. It is only us humans that struggle on, I lost my 11 yr old collie boy in Dec 06 to cancer. The days do get less bleak, the guilt fades & in time the house will feel empty. We now have Tigs as a companion to our 9yr old bitch. He's not the same breed, will never replace Glenn but he's created chaos in the house again. Run Free in the sunshine Rockley. XLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- For anyone that's interested this site has a section called 'Jesters Law' http://www.dogtheftaction.com/home/ They are campaigning and collecting signatures to get it made law that all government agencies and the railway networks must document and scan all dogs found deceased before incinerating them in this cruel and unnecessary way. My thoughts are with the owners. RIP Rockley.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- I am so terribly sorry and so very sad to hear that your dear Rockley didn't make it home. Like you, when you mentioned the railway line and lack of sightings, I also worried. The railtrack system is just awful and yet it would be so simple to implement logging of any found dogs and cats on the railway lines. And yes, we have lost too many of our wonderful companions this way and I so wish we could change things. Thank goodness the maintenance worker who found Rockley had the decency and took the time to tell you. It's certainly something none of us would want to hear but I suppose it's better than not knowing what happened to your lovely boy. Rest in peace Rockley and sweet dreams boy... xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- By the edge of a wood at the foot of the hill, Is a lush green meadow where time stands still, Where friends of a man and woman do run, when their time on earth is over and done, For here between this world and the next , Is a place where each beloved creature find's rest ! On this golden land they wait and play till Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. No more do they suffer in pain or sadness for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness!!!! Their limbs are restored their health renewed their bodies have healed strength imbuled !!!! They run through the grass without even a care, untill one day they Stop and sniff the air !!! All ears pricked forward, eyes dart side to side, Then all of a sudden one breaks from the pack ! For just that instant their eyes have met Together again person and pet, So they run to each other these friends from long past, The time of their parting is over at last !! The sadness they felt whilie they were apart has turned into Joy once more in each heart, They embrace with a love that will last forever and side by side they cross over together !! - Rockleys Mum, how awful for you. What a terribly sad thing to happen, and I can understand your anger and hurt at the apparent lack of thought and effort to try and find out who Rockleys owner was...........its this kind of thing which needs highlighting because in this day and age there is no excuse for it. I hate the word "closure" its so awful, but terribly sad though it is, at least you know what happened to Rockley and won't be for ever wondering what happened to him, like so many of our wonderful owners on here who do not know what has become of their beloved pet. That is cold comfort for you I know, hold tight to your memories of this lovely chap ~ he has left a paw-print on your heart. Sleep tight Rockley xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Oh no .. I am just so so very very sorry. What a tragic end to a lovely dogs life. The only thing is that thanks to the railway man you do actually have closure and know what happened. Its all just so so sad. Unfortunately, the road clearance is much the same as I found out when we lost a friends dog, they clear and incinerate them, not even taking details as such, often even when they are chipped, it is such a travesty. Am thinking of you at this very sad time ... ShirleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- It is with deepest sadness that I have to inform you all of the terrible news that my Rockley was in fact hit by a train just a short distance from my home not long after he went missing. Despite my concerns about the track and my calls to Network Rail on the Thursday , the Friday and again on the Monday I was told that there had been no reports. However yesterday the worker that had found Rockley only came to us after seeing the poster that had been put up outside the railway station. My husband received that call from him and he came round in person to tell him (I was out postering). Apparently despite obviously being a pedigree Labrador with a collar on and someones dear family pet he was just passed to Environmental health who incinerated him. nothing was reported to anyone. We are all absolutely devasted. I can't believe that there procedures put in place if you lose, find or run over a dog but if you hit him on a railway line you just treat it like a wild animal. I also simply don't know what he was doing up that way, he never walks that way, a witness said that she saw him on Valebridge Road following someone else with a dog (did that person not notice him) and that he ran across the road toward the crossing but that she saw him heading towards Big Field on the reserve (did she actually make sure he had crossed the crossing or just asume that was where he was heading). In spite of this heartache I have been immensely touched by everyones help and efforts in trying to help find our Rockley. Thank you all so much. He was the most wonderful dog who was loved by all and loved everyone back. I simply can't imagine life without my little Rockers. I will miss you for ever my little boyxxxxxxxxGod Bless XXXXXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- I have received emails from two Dog Wardens (Haywards Heath and Horsham). Both said they had no reports of a Black Lab or similar dog. I also received a reply from MidSussex Councils Park Ranger, Tim Petken, who was so very very kind in his email, extremely sympathetic and said he went to Bedelands today, and that he will keep a vigilant check on the area for Rockley. How brilliant is that. Well done Tim and Mid Sussex Council!!!!!!!! ... ShirleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Still no news on Rockley today. No sightings since wednesday. I have contacted Network Rail (just in case - we live near a railway line) and they have no records of anything happening since wednesday. We flyered an area where we thought Rockley might have headed and people might not have known about his dissapearance but still no joy. I have checked with the vets, kennels and Dog warden and have even contacted the park rangers, spoken to the local postman (who has a poster and is going to let his colleagues in the area know) and the milk man. My daughter goes back to school tomorrow so we will be putiing posters up outside and she is giving flyers to all her friends. I am getting very down now as there seems not much more we can do and yet there has been no sightings of him at all. I can't believe that just two people saw a Black Labrador running down two main roads in the middle of the day there must be more witnesses that saw him? Everyone has been so supportive though and I can't imagine what I would do if this website did not exist The help everyone has offered has been really heartwarming I just hope and pray that some good news comes soon. Wherever you are Rockley please stay safe and know that we will not give up on you. We love you so much sweetheart xxxxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- PS. meant to say, its very important to check with the police, Dog Wardens and vets very often, and visit your rescue centres in person. Dogs can be sometimes described differently, and not recognised, and can be rehomed after only seven days if not claimed by the owner. Very important to visit in person. - Well done Rockley's Mummy, that's the idea !! The more posters and flyers, the more people to spread the word. Dont forget to give flyers out to dog walkers. - Now I know this is a big job, and hard work .. but when searching for my friends dog Bart, we were up all hours searching (5am until 2am!), and we also got up early on the 2nd day he was missing and had printed off around 500 small (1/4 A4 size) posters and we actually walked around housing estates and put them into peoples post boxes (unless you know the local postman and offered him ?10 to do it for you??????). It certainly got the word out more so than the posters .. some kind folk even put the poster up in their house window to help. You could do this around the roads he was last seen ... Also please purchase some plastic covers to put your posters in .. as when I went searching yesterday (and my friend Caroline went out there today) we both noticed existing posters without any protection from the damp and wet weather .. so sorry there is no better news .. - I did e-mail admin yesterday for the mini flyers. I went to the Kent Surrey and Sussex Labrador show today at Ardingly just up the road from me, and while postering my surrounding area on the way back received a call from a lady who had seen the posters at the Dog show. She was driving close to my home on Wednesday she says that she is sure she saw Rockley running down Leylands Road from the Windmill Pub towards Wivelsfield Railway station so I have made sure I have put more posters around there just in case someone has taken him in and hasn't seen the Posters around Bedelands Nature Reserve. I hope someone is looking after you till you come back home to your familyXXXXstay safe Rockley xxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Rockley was being walked by a friend of mine in Bedelands Nature Reserve as I was unwell. He is very fond of the Mill Pond (being a Lab) and if he runs off usually heads there. We live just outside the Nature Reserve so he would have found his way home by now. My only ideas are that someone has found him and his petsafe tag has come off (this has happened before as my twin twenty month old girls like to play with it around his neck) and they are not sure what to do with him. If you regularly walk up at Bedelands it was around 12.30pm he went off. For any one who may see him he is of slim build has a brown leather collar with chrome studs and is going ever so slightly grey on his chin. He is a wonderful member of our family and my three girls play with him all the time. We all miss him dreadfully I have not slept for the past few nights wondering what has happened to him. He would come home if he was able to and local. Please be on the lookout!!! I AM OFFERING A CASH REWARD FOR HIS SAFE RETURN HOME TO US!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Meant to add that if you have have to get the posters and mini posters printed in black and white, make sure you use BRIGHT orange paper or a similar colour. When a dog went missing in our area, I used to put the mini posters on car windscreens in supermarket car parks, outside the local parks, near train stations, etc. and as I walked away and looked back at my handiwork, they really stood out!!! Good Luck!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- I'm too far away to help but couldn't help but notice Rockley's beautiful photo. She really is very pretty. I own a Rottie but we had a lovely girl black Lab for over 15 years (weren't we lucky?). Such a lovely breed. It's great to see that's you've got such good Helpers on board and who know the area well. If you would find them useful, you can request mini-posters (4 to a page) from admin@doglost.co.uk which can be downloaded onto the Info Centre (towards the top - left-hand side - of this page above the Dolly's Directive link). These don't have to be printed in colour (if that is a problem), especially as most people know what a female black Lab looks like! Hand these out to just about everyone you come across and that way, when someone spots Rockley (AND THEY WILL!). You may have already done this, but if not put Rockley's missing posters in your car windows and ask family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues, etc to do the same. In the meantime, keep up the good work everyone! Come home gorgeous Rockley!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Have sent emails to several kennels & catteries, stables and pet shops / suppliers in area and asked them to display & forward poster to any other contacts. I know K9Shirl has already contacted lots of vets but went through list for Burgess Hill area and emailed / faxed details incase ( as said before better duplicated than missed ). The schools are back next week ask if you or they would hand out leaflets of Rockley - kids are great little detectives and labradors generally love children. Rockleys Mummy have sent you a PM. - I have just spoken to someone out side my house on their way back from walking their dog and they saw Rockley on Wednesday lunchtime following another dog and its owner on Valebridge road which runs alongside the reserve. He apparantly ran back across the road where he nearly got ran over. A woman in a silver car got out and follwed him but he ran back towards big field on the reserve. For any one who may see him he is of slim build has a brown leather collar with chrome studs and is going ever so slightly grey on his chin. He is a wonderful pet and my three girls play with him all the time. We all miss him dreadfully I have not slept for the past two nights wondering what has happened to him. He would come home if he was able to and local. Please be on the lookout!!!ThanksLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

- Rockley was being walked by a friend of mine in Bedelands Nature Reserve as I was unwell. He is very fond of the Mill Pond (being a Lab) and if he runs off usually heads there. We live just outsidethe Nature Reserve so he would have found his way home by now. My only ideas are that someone has found him and his petsafe tag has come off (this has happened before as my twin twenty month old girls like to play with it around his neck) and they are not sure what to do with him. If you regularly walk up at Bedelands it was around 12.30pm he went off.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
