The dog warden has now collected the body, unfortunately the body is too decomposed to be able to provide any further description of this poor dog, but thanks go to the warden for his efforts in collecting the body to look to see if further description was possible and of course the finder, the couple who took the body to the vets & the vets who took in the body x

Thanks for the update Lisa x

We have been working with the dog warden & the vets to find more information on the circumstances & obtain a better description of this poor dog. The dog warden has confirmed that when the caller originally spoke to the council, they advised that it would be helpful if the body could be placed somewhere safe overnight to ensure that it wasnt removed or affected by wildlife, as the cleaning team would not be able to attend until the morning. A bin was suggested as a safe place, but not intended that this was to be disposed of in the bin permanently, just that this would be a place to keep the body safe from wildlife. The body is very badly decomposed and the vets are concerned about cross contamination in their practice, a further complication is that the vets who kindly took in the body fall under a different dog warden to the area where the body was found. The dog warden for the area is co-ordinating with the dog warden for the area that the vets are in in order that they can collect the body and try to gain a description of this poor dog in the hope of identifying the body & tracking down anyone looking for the dog x

Couldn`t agree more Simbarose.. Can`t believe no-one was willing to help. I think sometimes it`s who you are talking to on the end of the phone. Best to ask for the person who is in charge at the time. Hope an owner can be traced for closure.Last edited: 2018-02-21 20:21:03

just had this email back from one sent this morning

Hello,

Thank you for your email.

Like you I was most upset to read that advice had been given to put the dog in the bin. I do not think it was given by anyone at NSDC. We advise to take to the vets to be scanned for a chip or brought to our depot at Brunel Drive where we also have the facilities to scan for chips. If no chip is found we hold on to dead dogs for a period of time. If they are not claimed then they are cremated. I have forwarded your email to our dog warden.

Regards

Thank you to the lovely couple who had the courage to recover this poor soul. It must have been a very heart-breaking and unpleasant task to do. The information in CJ's last comment has helped eliminate my own Chocolate Cocker girl.

I have emailed Newark and Sherwood council to see if is indeed their area and express concerns over the advice given to the finder.I have sent the message sited on FB and also stated that now in media that the response given did not go down too well !!

Last night myself and my partner had to do the worst thing in our life to date.

I’m a member of a cocker spaniel group on Facebook as I have two myself, a post came up saying that a lady had found a dead dog (female cocker spaniel) in a river near where I live and that after calling the council, dog warden, RSPCA none would help and all the council said was “put it in the bin and we’ll throw it away tomorrow” I was hoping this was a prank! But then I started to think, if it’s really happened that dog shouldn’t be left in the bin to end up on landfill! It needed to go to a vets and be scanned and hopefully find its owners. Myself and my partner drove over to the location looked into the bin hoping to find nothing, thinking it was a prank. but unfortunately there she was a brown & white cocker/springer spaniel 😭😭😭 we wrapped her up in a pink blanket and immediately took her to my vets. The vets said they’d try to find a chip and call me tomorrow to let us know if an owner was contacted. I’m so upset and shocked by the response to the above agencies. I would hope that if anything ever happened to my boys that someone kind would do the same for me and take them to the vets not just throw them in the bin.

Dog was found in the river Maun location Edwinstowe near sherwood Forrest. Brown & white either springer or cocker looked like a female around 2yrs old. Must of been missing a while as body was decomposing making identification difficult.

She’s now in my local vets who have assured me if they can’t locate the owner they well cremate her and scatter her ashes.

I’m so upset and sad and thinking of the dogs owners at this sad time, I hope she has a chip and they’ve been able to contact them.

I live in this area too. Just a thought, there is a Center Parcs in the vicinity too - maybe the poor dog was on holiday with owners?? So sad.

Further information from the lovely lady Sonia who took the time to trace this dog from a message on Facebook and took to her own vets ( who operate an out of hours surgery) to be scanned.
Location
Apparently the River Maun. The River Maun is a river in Nottinghamshire, England. Its source lies in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, and from there it flows north east through Mansfield (which takes its name from the river), Edwinstowe and Ollerton, these being the heart of the Sherwood Forest area.
So she could of come from Kirkby - in - Ashfield.

My other half personally thinks she ran off in sherwood Forrest and accidentally fell in the river.
So so so sad

Many thanks to vets who scanned this dog but sadly no chip has been found. Will try to get as much information as possible.
