Hi, looking at strayaid site, there seems to be a very similar dog , not a great picture so don't want to get your hopes up, but worth a look. http://www.strayaid.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=936:e408-09&catid=11:coxhoe&Itemid=17        Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Police don?t want to know. No surprises there then. I am told the RSPCA have been contacted and are working with the local Great Dane Rescue to recover this Dane as the owner is not allowed to keep dogs. (Not sure which rescue.) Still hoping it could be Max, but even if its not the important thing is that the Dane is safe. Will keep you updated.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A lady telephoned today from Glastonbury. She thinks she may have seen Max on Sunday with a person who she would not expect to have such a dog. This individual is well known to the local police. The local police are being asked to scan the Great Dane in question, Fingers crossed.

Sharyn if you look on dogs reunited today 13th June you will see a litter of stolen Bulldog puppies were recovered from a house in Newport (stolen from the Midlands). It might be worth trying to get in touch with the owner of these puppies and asking for the address they were recoverd from as it is so close to you. I know the police are involved. They could be behind the disappearance of Max. Maybe this could be the break you have been waiting for. Good luck.  AlisonLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A Great Dane has been spotted in and around Tredegar Park, that?s the small park opposite the Patent Office on the A48, Newport. There has been a circus there for the last three months - they left this morning. All of this makes sense if the dog is Max. A taxi driver spotted the Great Dane, so we have been searching the area for the last hour or so without success. Fortunately the same taxi driver?s father in law is the park keeper so the search will commence again at first light. Everything crossed I hardly dare to hope that Max could really be home soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for that . Also Great Dane Care are having Companion Dog Show held under kennel club rules to help raise money for the charity on Sunday 11th May 2008 at Pembrey Country Park, Pembrey West Wales. This fantastic organisation is run by Max's breeder who will no doubt be keeping all eyes peeled for Max but any other assistance will be welcome and attendance will be in support of a good cause.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You're spot on there baldrick, people always stop me to say they saw me with my big dane. Like Max he is a very large Great Dane and as I am only 4ft 11in tall we stick out in a crowd so lets hope the person who has the dane in Newport attracts as much attention as I do when out walking. This sounds hopeful. Someone is bound to speak to this person if the area is postered again. If this dog is not Max, they may have seen him. It always sticks in your mind when you see a dog like your own, and you remember all sorts of details about the owner that you dont remember with other people. lots of positive thoughts everyone.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Im hoping that if its not Max the owner of the Dane will see the posters and phone me. If the dog is legitimately owned by a responsible person they may realise the possible mistake, if not Max is a very big noticeable dog and the light warmer nights may help with the search. I will keep you posted. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A nurse from a Newport vets rang today, she saw a blue Great Dane at Belle Vue Park in Newport (Sunday 20 April 2008), the nurse paid particular attention as the dog was so large but only realised that it could be Max when she saw the poster in work. At least I am sure this lady actually knows what a Great Dane looks like. The dog looked healthy so thats a comfort. Many thanks for taking the time to ring me. Will poster the area later today. If any one lives in that area please keep an eye out.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I was just thinking that myself :-(. It is a bit odd that Max's owner has done so much publicising and heard nothing. A dog this size just cant disappear into thin air. Its not physically possible. Are there any locals who could join up for a search of hedges/ditches (obviously with farmers permission) en route. I know what you mean, My lab used to do exactly what Max has done when the neighbouring farm's GSD was in season. If I drove fast enough I could get there by road just as he arrived from his route over the fields, but if anything had happened to him en route I would have needed a large search party. to check for sure because of the terrain. At least you would know. :-( I hope we are wrong, but is there anyone local to join forces on this? I know myself organising things in rural areas is an utter nightmare. Sharyn having just read your last post I wonder if you have checked all ditches and hedge bottoms in and around the farms. I am saying this because I have lost 3 young danes to natural causes and they have all died very quickly and without warning. I hope and pray I am wrong. AlisonLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The location is very rural, virtually no passing traffic. Max left the property on route to the local farm (approx 800 yards as the crow flies or dog travels) to visit a bitch on heat. The route by road is somewhat longer by the time I had driven round there was no sign of Max. The farmer had seen Max in the adjoining field but he did not arrive at the farm. I have contacted all the local farms, stables, rescues, vets, shops, Post Offices, pubs etc in total over 1000 posters sent out by post. Max?s poster has been given to 400 taxi drivers, and the local postmen and refuse collectors. Street cleansing department assure me they have not recovered Max?s body. Additionally, all national Great Dane rescue centres and national Great Dane Breeders (listed on champdogs.co.uk) have been notified. Max?s breeder has been fantastic in spreading the word and Max is on their website great-dane-care.org.uk. Max is also on Sully?s. I search all the Great Danes for sale and stud on a daily basis and have arranged visits to a couple of dogs neither were Max. There was no response to the BBC Radio Wales interview on 9 April 08. could you please give a real detailed description of where and when you last saw him, and the circumstances surrounding his loss-when and how you first noticed etc. For example if he simply wandered out of your premises and you are in a heavily built up area it needs a really heavy and carefully chosen poster campaign with knocking on doors/following up possible leads etc. because someone could have him 2 miles away and just never be aware and not try too hard coz they like him. Sorry I am jst too far away to help with that. If he's been stolen then we really do need to try and contact everyone in the country who has an interest in Danes. For example here in my part of Wrexham, it quite rural, everyone has a crossbreed, a staff, a working strain gundog, a lurcher, a collie or a terrier they stick out like a sore thumb. Apart from the ex breeder I know I have only seen one Dane here in the last 5 years-and he was fawn. Thats how noticable they are. If he turns up here any time in the next 10 years he'll cause a stir believe me, but other places there are more of them, and you might see lots. I dont bother my local rescues with every dog from other parts of the country as its just too big a job, but if you really genuinely think he's nicked rather than lost and "found/rescued" I will do, as I dont suppose they see many Danes either (if any!) Good luck hun. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

actually im pretty sure if you put the microchip number into the website it pops up the details. the only challenge is knowing which chip/site-not a problem if the owner tells you and the details match. Obviously if owner says dog not chipped and it is chipped you have a problem needing investigation! I still cannot believe a dog the size of a small horse can disappear off the face of the earth without some element of forward planning-even a passing car would struggle. I had to squeeze an injured GSD in my car which was bought with 4 average sized dogs in mind. A great Dane-no way. It must have been a van, or an estate car at least. There is a lady in our village in N wales who used to breed/show/judge Danes. I know she still has a couple of returns/rescues. I will get up there in the next day or two and put a poster in her mailbox just in case she hears anything. I know its a long shot, but still worth trying. Show people seem to hear all sorts from all over. Good luckLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn I'm sorry you still haven't found Max and it's good that feel able to help Prestons mum in her search. Your vet's attitude is very typical I'm afraid. They all want us to get our animals microchipped but don't seem to be very helpful when we ask them to scan our pets. See Dollys Directive on the home page.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We had a reported sighting this week but it turned out to be a blue mastiff. I was very disappointed when I took one of the other Danes to the vets this week and when I asked her to scan his chip into the computer she REFUSED. The vet then explained that the chip is meaningless unless you phone the mirochip company - there is no database of missing dogs. Vet cant afford to verify individual owners!! A phone call costs 10p - I would gladly pay it!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had a phone call at 00:30 hours, caller said he had Max. Negotiated a ransom and arranged to meet at Tesco St Mellons. At 01:00 called again and said to leave the money at the entrance to Tescos. We said we were happy to pay the ransom but would not pay until we had seen Max. The caller said that he was going to slit Max?s throat and hung up. Managed to followed two youths from the back of Tesco to the area were Max has been sighted where they disappeared. The police now have the number used to make the calls. sharyn, brilliant, very often when posters are removed they are for a reason. Looks like the net is closing in and Max could well appear soon, have you contacted the DW and police for the area in case he is picked up? Good luck and keep up the great work. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Three posters at the heart of the location where Max was reported to have been seen (being taken for a walk by a male aged about twenty) have been deliberately removed. And believe me they were well and truly stuck. So I replaced them with twenty more posters. All the children in the area were asking about Max and promised to help find him. I hope that the net is closing and Max will soon be too hot to handle.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Can I offer a suggestion - that you contact Sully 07957 591856 or pm him on Florence's page? He's probably not in your area but he's a real expert with Danes (I think he's with GD Rescue) & was an enormous help in getting Florence back. Sure he won't mind! Good luck xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Still have not seen Max but spoke to another two people who saw him earlier in the week. Have postered all the main dog walks, bus stops and phone boxes, Max wont be able to go for a walk without passing a picture of himself. Distributed small poster to 450 taxi drivers. If Max is in the area someone knows where he is.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn, brilliant if you can get the postman to deliver small posters, also try and find out where the milk delivery depots are and local shops who deliver papers. If there is a free paper for the area ask the delivery person to also help out with door to door delivery. Good luck. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn it may be worth going back to that area again tonight and just sitting in your car keeping a look out. If the people who have him are aware he is stolen they may only take him for walks in the dark. Make sure you take someone with you and stay safe. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn, these sightings sound promising you are doing brilliantly. I've done the smaller posters and emailed to Yasa to go on the Info Centre, they may not go on now until tomorrow. I am staying in Birmingham at the moment visiting Crufts until Monday will look out for Max's dad. Good luck and hope the smaller posters help. Jan Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn have you tried getting a story on your local tv channel. It is difficult but can be achieved especially if you keep pestering them. There must be an interest in such a gentle giant vanishing into thin air. It has to be worth a try. Someone on this forum got their dag back by getting a friend to put the word round that they were looking to AQUIRE a dog of a certain breed and hey presto the local thieves turned up with their dog (if that makes sense).I have 4 dogs 2 of which are danes and I can't imagine what you are going through. Keep on looking you are doing a brilliant job. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn send poster to all doggie places like training classes and groomers as the other dog owners will keep a look out for him and spread the word. Look on the internet, especially Epupz in the for sale section and in all the papers pet for sale section. I also always give poster to the Big Issue sellers in the area as they spend a lot of time out and about and have always been very helpful. You could also poster any (rough) pubs where things are often sold on in the car parks. Have youi tried contacting the local TV chanel as they will often run a story if it is a slow news day. Good luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

sharynd don't give up hope. Thank goodness your fella is chipped. He may very well have been stolen but he will have to go to the vets a some point and hopefully they will scan him. Has anyone stopped you to "admire him recently" if so did they do anything out of the ordinary like check his name tag or indeed ask if he was approachable. Try hard to think back and just maybe something will come to mind that might give you a clue as to his whereabouts. Can't help you with the search as I'm in Linconshire but good luck hope he turns up soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharyn, well done getting his details on the Cardiff Bay webpage. Just a thought, if you could possibly get them to put the link as it is above for Max's page on here, then everyone would be able to see the comments left and not just the poster. If there are any sightings and they are posted on here then they would also been seen and alert people in the area to look out for him. Keep up the good work you are doing fantastic. Sharyn, glad to see you have managed to now register and welcome on board DL. Brilliant that Max is chipped. You need to get the word out as far out as possible, you cann never do too much postering and this is how a lot of dogs are found. Try papers to see if they will cover a story, if you have any free papers contact them. As you say very hard to hide a big boy like Max. We are rooting for him to be found soon. Do keep us updated as much as possible. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
