- Not sure if Teds owner will see this but having adopted a hunting dog from cypres I am aware of some of the problems that come with the type! I kept Nelly on a 200ft long line, as used for lunging horses, as his recal was worse than zero. Slowly, VERY slowly, it improved because he loves food and treats so I kept cut up sausages or chicken, called then reeled him in, gave him a treat then let him go. Eventually I think it sunk in that he ould get a treat and could still go running off again!

- What a lovely account. Have a look at the website 4-legs-good based Shrewsbury. They have a brilliant understanding of dog behaviour and may be able to help with keeping Ted safe and reducing his wandering ways. Quite a way from you but Claire may well know someone closer to you. Good luck.

"Hi Everyone,
The Podenco goes by the name of Ted, is a huge escapologist and I am its owner.
Firstly, thank you to everyone for the input and shares. I do not use Social Media per se so this post was pointed out by a kind neighbour.
Until very recently I have been lucky enough to house Ted in a country setting where his antics normally only cause a delayed return to the house. A change in domestic circumstances has adjusted that situation and Ted is taking full advantage by disappearing on every walk, however normally I do locate him. The only avoidance option is to keep him on a lead, but those of you that know Podencos would know that this is no quality of life for them.
Ted has an interesting story which I'll relate briefly here:
He was initially used for hunting in Spain but likely didn't make the grade and was cast out by his owners.
He was then adopted by a homeless person who was subsequently sectioned due to mental health issues, but not before he had spent 6 months training Ted to be a vegetarian Police Dog .... Go figure ..... Hence Ted has some quite strange, but entertaining, habits.
The Spanish authorities handed him to a Podenco charity who then located him with a British partner for re homing on an equestrian school. He then made friends with an Irish Sports horse (which I bought) and Ted came as part of the deal. At the time I was living on a small farm in Norway and Ted was flown out there. He had the run of his own pine forest and squirrels in abundance, hence his escape skills were not spotted.
9 months ago I moved back to Uk, Shropshire, and Teds free movement was restricted a little whereupon he started to show his new skill set.
The recent move to this area has caused him to fully deploy all his cunning and guile and it seems he's winning the battle. If anyone has any advice on recall training Ted I'd be very keen to hear it. We've tried whistles, food etc .... Nope. In all honesty it's a safety thing as he has zero road sense.
Anyway, I notice that Crowfoot are closed on Sunday's so I will be in touch tomorrow and recover the escapee.
Thank you very much to Crowfoot and all of you that have taken the time to spread the word. The power of Social Media hey !" - 2018-03-10 14:30 madmudmob
