Haslemere is on the border of 3 counties and 3 police forces. I contacted my (Hampshire) area force on Sunday 30th March requesting that they -

- contact doglost and issue a statement about what action they are taking
- liases with the neighbouring forces and the local National Trust wardens
- poster popular dog walking areas

Complete contact details were provided.

I also passed on some details of suspicious activity.

They haven't had the courtesy to respond. Have they contacted DogLost ?

That is where Monty vanished from 18 months ago. And he was a spaniel. Dog ID=6748 the reference in Monty's thread to Phoebe, is regarding a spaniel that vanished a few weeks earlier from Puttenham and got "returned" . For some reason ( I presume at owners request) the entire phoebe thread has gone form this site. Maybe the site could make the info that it contained available to your area co-ordinators as I recall there was a description of the man and women who returned Phoebe at the time ( I think they had a connection with the Ash area) but can't remember the description of the people. Sue_W I have checked with my friend in Puttenham and the people we were discussing who rented the stables in in that road have now gone, but she doesn't know where. Different people now keeping horses in those fields.

Have just been contacted by a local dogwalker who has been told about a couple hiding in Bourne Woods on several occasions and by various people. The posters I put up have been torn down so will poster again.

I reported a suspected sighting of the previously described male in a white transit van around hindhead common at 17.15 friday 28/4, so it is slightly disconcerting to hear them say 'they know nothing' !!

Just to add that the notice in our vets warning about the dog thefts described the two people as slim. Also it was confirmed that the first dog they tried to take on Blackdown was a spaniel.

The police in Haslemere visited my vets today as they were getting phone calls after the newspaper report but the policman told the vet they did not know anything about any attempted dog thefts so maybe someone had better contact the haslemere police so they know what is going on?

Although I've been following this, today my next door neighbour (who isn't on doglost) and fellow dog walker mentioned that they'd seen the poster at Dunelm car park on Ludshott Common NT, so good work, and thanks to whoever put it up ! :-)
I've just read the report at the start of this thread and it's horrifying. What are the police doing (email/PM me if you don't want to say publicly) ? I'm going to arm myself next time I'm out.

We can only pass on the info we receive unfortunately. I guess the answer is to be alert and watch who is walking near you. Some people take down number plates of other vehicles parked nearby - not always practical. If people stop to chat, keep your dog nearby or with you, it could be a distraction. These will not be the only couple trying this type of thing, its been going on for some time now all over the country. Could be a couple of same sex even. Thankfully rare events in the big picture, but enough to give concern. Keep your dog as safe as you would your child and you shouldn't go to far wrong. Sue x

Any chance of a better description of the couple - a goatee beard is easy to shave off if they spot the posters - were they slim, large, did they both have dark hair - saw a couple yesterday at Frensham with a rope lead but no dog in sight. It is easy to get a little paranoid I know but I am wary of couples with no dog now. Accurate description would be a great help.

I help out at NT Polesden Lacey, near Dorking. NT South East regional Office is based at Polesden Lacey House, so today I delivered poster which has been forwarded on to NT West Weald wardens, who cover the area around Hindhead, Frensham etc. and other relevant areas in SE region.

I'll get some put up in the GU15 area, as it's not that far away and there are plenty of woods around here. Can we get a better description? I work for my local BBC radio station: BBC Southern Counties Radio, which covers Surrey, NE Hants and Sussex, and I have passed the details on to the progamme producers but we could really do with a more detailed description, if possible?

Can I suggest that everybody prints out these posters, in colour if possible, and we ensure that all dog walking areas within a good 10 mile radius of Blackdown has posters everywhere - that may help deter these revolting dog thieves. I will poster Frensham Ponds and Bourne Woods. What would happen if a dog is stolen - would the police be interested?? Who would we ring initially? Would be grateful for some advice.

A lovely local neighbour hood watch guy rang this morning after seeing the warning posters and will be circulating the poster around his members too and putting a link to doglost on their site. May we suggest all dog owners in these areas team up with others and walk their dogs together until we can apprehend this couple. This sends a shiver down my spine....dog knapping in broad daylight?! The nerve of some people is incredible. I really hope that these people are caught and brought to account for the crime of attempted theft/kidnap. Although I live in Essex this has certainly made me more wary and vigilant when out walking my boys.

These sick people are ruining the sheer pleasure we have as dog owners/lovers and the quicker we can make them aware that they are NOT welcome the better ! I have posted some warning notices up on various entrance points onto Hindhead Common and in the main car park at the Devils Punchbowl area and will continue to be vigilent and spread the word ever hopeful that they will be caught.

Email received - Hello all, More reports of attempted dog theft are still coming into the shop. Just today, I was told of an incident involving the suspected couple in Liphook, and then this evening I received the email attached below outlining a similar report on Puttenham Common. Please, please please - everyone keep an eye on your dog when walking. THIS IS NOT A RUMOR. The sheer amount of reports from unrelated customers makes this more than a series of coincidences. The couple in question have been described as being in their mid 30's, and the man involved has a goatee. Please keep your mobile with you at all times, stick to the main paths, and if anyone suspects that they may be a potential victim, please contact the Police. I will keep you updated whenever I receive more news. ** 2nd MAIL - understand a very similar incident occurred on Puttenham Common this morning (Wednesday) details are a little sketchy but certainly sounds a more than a rumour. It sounds like extra vigilance might be required by all dog walkers.

Its all very worrying. I live in an isolated area and a few weeks ago I came home to find my GSD missing. My husband and his brother were in watching the Rugby on TV. The thieves climbed over a locked 6ft gate and took Mischka. Fortunately I live near a small village and somebody told me they'd seen her being walked towards a travellers site by 2 men. A farmer friend and his shotgun came with me and we found her tied to the gate at the entrance of the site as they were just about to move on. We have quite a few travellers come here at Easter so I'm going to not leave my house at all. Barb.

It would help to have a better description of the people concerned really, Height and build of the man would be useful, length of hair of the women etc? Did they look affluent, scruffy or just average? Any accent? All these things could help to identify who they are.

The dog thieves generally work Blackdown If you walk your dog up there keep it on a lead and watch out for a man and a women. The man will talk to you whilst the women distracts the dog.

it always pays to be on your guard no matter where in the country you are. i live in a lovely part of suffolk where life is reasonably quiet and laid back. whilst out in the country with my dals some middle aged chap stepped out from a bush ahead of me and started trying to call my dogs!! the big freak.

Please be aware this was tried on Midhurst Common as well who knows where they will try their luck again? A woman tried luring a Staffie toward her but the dog would not leave his owner a man appeared further up the common the owner thought nothing of this until I was postering about the attempted theft on Blackdown. This is so very worrying. I have as I say alerted people to this situation.

Was this Elstead near Milford or Elsted near Stedham and Midhurst? As they are both very near here and only the letter A separates the names. - daft I know but it can get very confusing. I can't find a google reference to bogmor common for either of them.

Received some disturbing news today that the suspected dog thieves on Blackdown Common have shifted their focus to Bogmor Common in Elstead. One of our customers was alerted to this via her local Neighbourhood watch. A dogwalker almost had her spaniel taken from her by a couple who fit the same description as the one on Blackdown. This time, the thieves almost got away - but they didn't count on the dog being properly whistle trained, as well as an owner who carries a big stick and is not afraid to use it! Some of our customers have started noting vechile type and registrations in the area before they start their walks, and I would encourage users of these areas to do the same. God forbid if the worst happens at least we will have some sort of starting point for the police to work with. The owner has reported this latest incident to the police, but could you also send this email to your clients as it seems that the dog thieves are now trying their luck on other commons. Very worrying!

ERIS The missing bitch in Midhurst actually bolted in a thunder storm (Fudge) the other dogs missing around here are in a sort of circle around here I live in Midhurst and have alerted the vets and put some posters up and around also spoken to people out with dogs. I might just add that one person I have spoken to about this had a scare with her dogs in Midhurst Common and is now even more aware this scare she had involved two people as well.

This goes to show how vulnerable some of us are when we walk our dogs. I walk two dogs off the lead and I couldn't run that fast if something like that were to happen to me. I am aware of the possibility and it is a worry when I'm alone with them in the woods or on the heath. We must all be on the alert and keep our dogs close and, if possible, in front.

We need to bear in mind that bBackdown, a big hill, on has on its lower slopes to the west lies Fernhurst, with a missing, Spaniel, To the other side lies Northchapel where a terrier went missing from, a while back as well as a pug. Millford with stolen/missing border terrier is only about 5 miles away, Thursley/Hindhead again about 4/5 miles distant. Didn't someone loose terriers out walking there lately? Midhurst, missing dogs, Shillinglee missing dogs. These could all be related. If someone could get the missing dogs from this are plotted on a chart I think Haslemere which lies on the north side of blackdown might in the middle of a spiders web. Not too sure but if you only go by the postcode you don't get a good idea of just how close all these areas are.

Oh my! Reminds me of my own experience a guy trying to get me to sell Hunni to him when she was around 6 months old. Luckily I was able to disppear up to my friends house along the road otherwise could have been a different story. So glad that little dog was stolen.

The info about this attempted theft has just arrive to me via the local neighbourhood watch crime alert from our area co-ordinator so they are being pretty quick off the mark with the warnings thank goodness.

I'm so glad they did not get your dog, and that you was able to get him back. I do hope that you have reported this to the police and the park or downs warden, and if you do have a local notice board ask your council if you could put up a warning notice, if they do not do this may be you and friends could make some small leaflets to hand out to the dog walkers in that area, also may be your local paper may put this in for you as a warning. And if I was you get a good pair of walking boots and these are also good for running and also a good form of defense.

Thank God you got your dog back. Think what it would be like if it was an elderly couple walking their dog. There is no way my 88 year old parents could chase anyone trying to steal their Yorkie. We need to make sure everyone is so aware of this.

How scary for you! I'm always walking my dogs in isolated spots. Even though I'm vigilant about who's in the distance you just have to be so careful. I always carry my mobile phone and agree that welly's are not the easiest things to run in! So glad you got your dog back safely. xx

I am so pleased these two didn't manage to get away with the dog. Can I just add that dog walkers should be vigilant wherever they are walking as this could happen to any of us. We can no longer assume people are to be trusted around our pets.

H****** and I were walking on Blackdown (local common) on a lower path that walks through the woods and not so many people use. I saw ahead a lady who instantly started trying to call H***** to her which I thought nothing of. As I passed her she was still trying to get H***** to come to her, but I passed her with H****** behind me. As I passed her a man came out of the bushes carrying a stick, and I exchanged a couple of words with him, again thinking nothing. About 3 steps on I realised H****** wasn?t with me, I turned and the girl and H******* had disappeared and all I could see was the man sprinting away along the path. I blew my dog whistle and started sprinting in their direction. I heard H******* yelp. I ran like I?ve never run before, and eventually caught up with them and H******. He?d obviously got away from them and wouldn?t go any where near them, I had to grab him to get him past them. She was laughing saying how fast he could run. I didn?t say anything as I was so shocked and felt completely vulnerable not being on the main path and being 2 of them. They had covered so much ground in such a short space of time if I hadn?t run after them I think I wouldn?t have seen him again. Analysing how they did it I now know to be really careful. I passed her with H****** behind me, and the man distracted me as she must have grabbed H******. (I assume that due to the yelp and the fact that he has never run away from me). Then as soon as I?d passed him he sprinted too. For those of you in Haslemere: they were late 30?s and both had dark hair. He had a goaty. Please warn others and be really aware that if you pass someone make sure your dog is in your sight and in front of you. My tummy muscles ache now as I?ve not put that much effort into running ever before! I?m really upset by what happened and so shocked by how quickly it occurred. I am going to stick to more open paths from now on. (and not wear wellys!)
