Aunt Stef - Area Co-ordinator well done for clearing this up and it proves that a tag or a chip would have stop this very sad situation happening. Debbi_Jayne Well said and I'm sure all the terrific helpers on here would not stop the work they are unselfishly doing. It is always so uplifting to see a dog go home. Great to see that Ted now has a chip :-). Hope the anal gland prob soon clears up. Just wanted to correct one of the points made earlier. The people that found Ted on the dual carriageway on the 11th did actually take him to a vet within half an hour of picking him up & as Ted didn't have a tag on his collar the vet thoroughly scanned him for a microchip, even down his legs etc just incase the chip had migrated & he found no chip.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Glad you've had him chipped and he's having his doodles detached Teds mum, I'd be inclined to ask your sister & daughter to register in their own names to post their thoughts to avoid confusion. I totally agree with others on this matter, to lay some of the blame with doglost is completely uncalled for, everyone on this site works so hard to assist in reuniting lost dogs with their owners, some are out in all weathers actively searching, some, like myself spend hours trying to match lost dogs to those in dog sanctuarys, some can only offer words of encouragement, we use our own ink & paper printing off 100's of posters & flyers, our own phones to make numerous calls and like doglady says, none get paid, its all done from the heart, so with that I'd just like to say WELL DONE to EVERYONE who gives their own time selflessly to help others, don't ever stop xxxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

ted has just been chipped & is due for the crown jewels chop next week. he also had a check over as he was a bit poorly with anal glands trouble, which he's on medication for. his welcome home party will be rescheduled for next week. its expected to be quite a 'do' ... more details & invitations to follow. If there are any confusion with the messages posted, it is because my lovely sister and daughter also write the odd note ... xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Doglost were unaware of the found dog, we were notified after Chewies owners were contacted, we had no involvement in the reunification. The next day Teds owners called us with their missing dog report and WE informed them of a similar found dog that had been reunited as Chewie the previous day. Teds mum you have a PM.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I agree with Baggy Dog and Buffysmum tattoo is a good idea and yes if Ted had a tag then when found and if is was not far from home the finder could have got in contact with you and this would have saved all involved this upset, And yes DL do a grate job in getting dogs back and with out it there would be a lot more dogs still missing I do not feel apportioning the blame to this sight is the right thing to say, people on this sight do this to help others and do not get paid for their time and for you to say they should have another thing in place to make sure dogs do not go to the wrong owners this is not right, it is up to the owners to make sure that your dog has all the ID on it to help it home. I've been reading this story with interest. Very traumatic for all involved. I'd just like to add a vote in favour of tattoos - we have ours all microchipped, tattooed and tagged to cover all bases. If you see a tattooed dog on the loose at least you know that it's trackable. It costs about ?15-20. The tattoist we used likened the procedure to getting your ears pierced. Hardly a yelp, and well worth it for peace of mind. I realise some people are against them but we weighed up the options and went for it. Hope Ted is now recovering from his ordeal, and no doubt being thoroughly spoilt!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Whatever the rights or wrongs are Ted is home and there would have been no confusion if he had worn a tag (which is the law) with the microchip or tattoo as a back up. Trying to apportion blame doesn't change the fact.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you so much to the couple that picked up Ted.Without them he may have been run over. There are a couple of points I would like to make for anyone it may happen to in the future.Whilst this is a brilliant website which no doubt helps many people,a few things may have made it easier for both Teds owners and Chewies owners. Many people have said about microchippng which will now happen, however it would have made no difference in Teds case as no body checked to see if he was chipped. The couple who found him didnt take him to the police station where he would have been checked ,they went straight on to this site and presumed he was Chewie ,the owners of chewie were informed .They came to claim him the next day with no identity checks being made by any one.Ted went missing on the 11th march ,"chewie/Ted was reunited the next day.I know ted wasnt reported on here Until 12th but there should be some back checking of at least 4 days to make sure your dog is not reunited with the wrong people.Ted was found 2 streets away from where he lived .chewie came from elstree and had been missing for a year.it would have been obvious whos dog he was.luckily by standing at the exact place he was picked up at with a massive banner the people who found him saw them and were able to tell them who had him. They went through a very traumatic time proving Ted was theirs, obviously when he saw his owners there was no doubt .If the couple had not driven past that night they would never have got Ted back.Thank god he is.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Corbiere mentioned DNA profiling. It costs ?15.00 from the kennel club, you get sent a kit with instructions, you then return it .You get a certificate with all the relevant info on it. Should your dog get stolen etc it is the best way to identify your dog. It is not as fast as a microchip in confirming that a dog is yours but it is 99% accurate unlike chips that migrate, don't work, scanners not picking up the chip etc. It is also useful for identifying the prodgeny if your bitch is stolen whilst pregnant/ or stolen for breeding. So if you have a pedigree dog, get it profiled and add a chip for back up.. Welcome home Ted. Feel sorry for Chewies owners but can understand the error.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wonderful news for Ted's family and I'm happy they have him back, but on the other hand how sad for Chewie's family. The stress of not knowing what happened to him must be hard to bear. I hope they get the good news they've been waiting for very, very soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Welcome home Ted.x So glad you are safe. Very sad for Chewie's owners thinking they had their boy back when he is still out there somewhere and they did keep Ted from coming to any harm. Stay safe darling Ted and glad to see you are getting a chip. x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

sorry ... forget to mention a couple of things .... Ted's chip is booked in at the vets ... and his crown jewels are being booked out at the same time too! He is also wearing a name tag the size of a egg around his neck. We've had a lovely day in the woods, lake and finally the bath. He's sleeping like a baby ... we love him so much. x Also my lovely young daughter posted an earlier comment which was written in haste with mixed emotions. We all forgive, laugh, love and learn and move on quick ... x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is Ted's mum ... unbelievably happy after one of the worst weeks of my life. It has been such an incredible roller coaster journey of highs, lows, twists and turns, with a cliff hanger ending. It's been a major operation between my lovely family and equally as lovely friends who all helped with their time, love and support for Ted. Complete strangers have also been so kind and I would like to thank them all very much indeed. Jane from Doglost was very supportive throughout and offered some invaluable information that I'll always remember. I will be getting round to phoning everyone over the next few days and although it very sad with regards the Chewie owners, it has been an all round uplifting experience, we have met some wonderful people and we'll never forget everyones kindness. Thank youLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Welcome home TED, very sad for the owners of CHEWIE but yes this would not of happened if they was tag and chipped or tattooed. and if I had through it was my dog I'm not sure what I would do if someone come along after I had just got it back and said it was theres, and yes I like to think I know my dogs inside and out but when they have been away from you and they have had some sort of trauma they do act different and if you had only had them for a year and they had been missing for a long time, I can see why they felt this was there dog. But I do hope that CHEWIE will be back home soon. and very pleased to here that TED will now be chipped and have a Tag. We do live and learn and sometimes the hard way. We would just like to clarify a few points here. The finder of the found dog made contact with Chewies owners direct. At that time Ted was not listed on our site as missing. We were alerted to problems last night. This morning I asked Chewies owners to forward me a photo of the dog in their care. After personally seeing the photos of both dogs, and the one taken this morning I found it extremely difficult to tell the difference between the two. The owner of Chewie, after a year, would have found it extremely difficult to make a clear judgement on whether or not it was their dog......deep in hearts I think they wanted it to be their long term missing dog. Unfortunately Chewies owners cannot respond to the messages posted on here, or on Chewies page as they do not have net access. All this heartache would not have happened if owners had either microchipped or tattooed their dogs. We will be switching Chewie back to missing shortly and will re-run his posters to helpers in the area.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

TED HAS BEEN FOUND.... HE WAS GIVEN TO CHEWIES OWNERS INCORRECTLY AND WE MANAGED TO SORT THIS OUT OURSELVES AS WE KNEW IT WAS TED. Just to let everyone know Chewie was really Ted lost the day before he was found. Purely down to the shear persistants of our family we managed to track Ted down. Chewie's owners were not very co-operative and let us know that it was their dog and they were keeping him. It really boils down to knowing your dog and we knew that 'Chewie' was ours and in fact Ted. After all our heartache of losing Ted for a week and knowing he was ok but not in our hands we have now come to a successful end to a horrible story. Today the vets were able to confirm the dog found was TED and not Chewie. I dont think we could keep a dog that we knew wasn't ours and was owned by a family but you learn something new everyday... C'est La Vie.... Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I hope whoever has Ted will bring him home soon. He is so beautiful. Its a shame he isn't tagged or chipped, but hopefully someone will realise he has a home and return him via a vet or the dog warden. I used to have a golden who was also scared of storms. I live not too far from Harrow Weald (in Watford) so will poster as soon as I can. Hope this lovely boy is back home very quickly.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just been on Harrow Borough website. Apparently they take strays to Battersea at Old Windsor. I've emailed them a poster, but would suggest Ted's owner rings them as well - 01784 432929. He's such a handsome boy I'm sure someone will have taken him in and is just reluctant to give him up. Home he's home soon xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
