Latest statement from family member (24/11 around 9am):
"I'm pretty sure I've checked all the Teams river now, right from the culvert out to the Tyne. I got amongst the industrial units today. Some of the lads working there have been looking and have took my number. 2 scenario is now - he's been swept out the Tyne, and would almost definitly be travelling downstream. Or he's scrambled out and is around Gateshead. All I can ask is you keep your eyes peeled when out and about today. Again, thanks for everything. The amount of people who know about him is insane."

Maybe everyone’s high hopes and prayers for Toby might be working! Phil the diver has been in the culvert this morning and we are very grateful for his serious hard work. We can confirm, which we are shocked about, that Toby is not there. There seems to be a small gap in the debris. We don’t know at what point he would of passed through and whether he was alive or not. However we as a family are aware that the chances of Toby’s survival are still very slim and as confirmed by Darren, Phil and fire brigade that the under current is extremely strong. However whatever we think of his fate we will always continue to search for him to bring him home one way or another. My brother is currently searching along the river teams. We thank you all so much for the prayers, thoughts and uplifting positive comments at this very difficult time. Maybe there is still hope for Toby.

This from his owner
From Tobys owner

Hi this is Lewis, Tobys owner. I just wanted to send a message if you could let people know.

Thanks so much to all the well wishers and everybody who has been thinking of Toby and hoping for his safe return.

Unfortunatly it looks like I've lost my boy in a freak accident. I have to give a special thanks to the emergency services for such an immediate response. Also to Allison and friends for being there right through the day and into the middle of the night. Thank you to Darren who waded his way through the tunnel to try and retrieve Toby. And also to Philip who would have gone in had the risk not been too severe at that point.

I will now try to reflect on what a fantastic 8 years of life Toby had, and wish all that knew him would do the same.

Once again, thanks for all the messages. I've been overwhelmed with the support received through social media.

This just now on Fb;
Update on Toby
From the owners sister

Darren Morris has been and went into the culvert. It is about 100m in length and he got about 80m of the way until the debris, water level and current became too much. We can pretty much confirm that Toby will be in that section and would not have survived. Thank you to Darren, kwik flow, Northumbria water, the fire brigade, all the offers of help and all the lovely messages of support. Toby was an amazing dog. He will be greatly missed. Xxxx

If the emergency services are on site hopefully they will know people who can help. The following local company may also know of someone willing to offer their services:

They’re requesting divers I’m assuming to locate and hopefully retrieve his body. The other dog is confirmed not Toby.

“UPDATE ON TOBY - unfortunately, people have been out last night searching but unfortunately, he is still missing.
This is a message from the owners sister:
Thank you everyone. We believe he is in the storm drain however fire brigade put logs in and they didn’t come through the other end so chances are it is blocked. My brother is down at the river teams now where the storm drains are.
Lost after getting washed away
8 year old small black lab wearing a red collar and lead still attached
Eslington Park, the River Team, Gateshead, NE8 at lunchtime today. He's 8 and has his collar I'D etc on
He slipped down into the River when out walking and the force was so strong he was carried in a storm drain.
If anyone has any information please message us
Thank you”

There has been a sighting of Toby swimming under the Scotswood Bridge at around 3.30 pm on 21st.
Skywalker99
Where does the storm drain go?
BBKM
It's always quite possible Toby has got himself out of the river and on to the railway track. If so and the dog sighted at Backworth crossing is him.. he is one vey clever dog keeping himself safe. The distance is not that far for a dog and could be done within a few hours.
Praying Toby is home safe very soon.

Have also shared to DogLost Northumberland in case Toby has got out of the water and crossed over a bridge.
Railway track passes close to location lost so have commented on active thread on Help Find Shearer Whitley Bay FB page, and to page owner re contacting Railtrack in case Toby got on to track and was spotted/reported by train driver.
Possible sighting at Scotswood Bridge (black dog swimming in river around 3.30 21/11) also mentioned on same FB thread.

"Backworth is a village in the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside in the county of Tyne and Wear, England, about 3 ¹⁄â‚‚ miles west of Whitley Bay on the north east coast. It lies 5 miles northeast of Newcastle."
It seems unlikely Toby could have travelled that far without help (i.e. picked up and taken there).Last edited: 2018-11-22 00:55:28 by GeoffA - Area Volunteer - Cornwall, Scotland & Northumberland

Shared. How terrifying. Maybe let people in the whole NE postcode region know as he may turn up miles away from where he fell in because the River Team flows into the River Tyne at Dunston. Last edited: 2018-11-21 21:35:59 by Hollyrhianwilkinson

I have spoken to Ali, who was walking Toby on a lead by the river. Toby slipped on the banking & fell in, with lead still attached. The river was flowing quite fast, but she jumped in to try & rescue him. Sadly it was too fast & he went along & into a storm drain. Fire brigade have attended, but sadly they have not been able to find him. The water authority are unable to assist until the water level drops, as it is too dangerous at the moment.
Please keep an eye out in the area.
