UPDATE: We found him in the fells and managed to rescue him!
My boyfriend and I decided we couldn't sit around and wait until morning, given its winter, the fells are wet, and as he a short haired lurcher, he get very cold very easily.
We are both experienced walkers with all the right gear, so we decided we'd scout down by the river but from the opposite side this time. We were careful to let people know where we were going and when to expect us back.
Took us 2 hours to reach the area and find him. It was our head torches that shone in his eyes and gave a "cats eyes" effect. He was too frightened to bark. He'd fallen into a ravine and had broken his hind legs.
Remarkably there was a couple at the bothy when my boyfriend went to to seek help whilst I sat with him and warmed him up. They helped us get him down by wrapping him in a sleeping back and sliding him into their large rucksack so we could carry him down. Took 3 hours to get him down at 2:30am.
We were so incredibly lucky and whilst I don't advocate night ventures to the fells, we did take every precaution and I don't believe he could've lasted until morning without hypothermia taking him.
He's currently at the vets but we're hopeful for a good recovery.
