Unfortunately to shoot a dog is not a crime but not reporting it IS. If the owners know who did it I hope they can follow it up somehow. Shameful that they were left not knowing all this time x

So sorry for the loss of Judy. Please find comfort that she is happy, and healthy, and having fun at the bridge with her pals. One day you will meet Judy at the bridge; never to be parted. She is with you now, and only a whisper away. You have not lost Judy forever. RIP+ darling girl. God blessx A~~~Candle~~~burns for Judy. Run free cherub. This is so awful. I am so so sorry for her family. What a pointless thing to do. And to not let you know...!

so sad & pointless not letting the owners know before now. Nothing that I say will ever mend the heartbreak. Run free beautiful Judy. My thoughts are very much with the owners and hope that you can find some sort of peace now. x

Oh that is so sad. I remember Judy going missing, and was hoping that no news was good news, and that perhaps she was safe and well somewhere, but sadly, this was not meant to be. I see she was lost on what was probably the start of the shooting season - food for thought maybe? I am so terribly sorry for this sad outcome, but at least Judy's owners do now have closure - albeit a very sad one. I am sure you are running free at the bridge with my two black labs, beautiful Judy xxxx

Yes Mollychops what goes around. one day soon I hope.

I am so so sorry. There are just no words adequate. My deepest sympathy.

Owner confirmed today to me that three years after Judy vanished she heard Judy had been shot. I wish the vile person that did this for whatever reason had had the guts to report it , but they didn't . So Judys family went all this time , searching and worrying about her. I and Old Grey man spent hours over there looking for Judy . At least he family had closure . Hoping what goes round comes round to this truly horrible person Last edited: 2014-06-16 22:00:57 by Mollychops

A Labrador has been found GL4 and is on the Pet Register site. However, as often these other sites aren't kept up to date, I have no idea whether the owner has been found or not or whether this one has been checked for a chip.

I have been called about a black dog (not sure if a lab or not) rummaging around the bins for a few days in Miserden,  not far from here, but I suspect this is more likely a local dog out on the scrounge.  The post office and village shop had already thought it may be Judy so if the dog is still wandering (and not just having a good time) then hopefully the microchip will do its magic.  Will keep you posted!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks everyone for still keeping any eye out for Judy.  I feel she is somewhere local being kept by someone.  The Witcombe/Coopers Hill/Brockworth bowl is a possible area and not far from Cranham Woods.  Maybe it might help if we get out the message that we just want her home, and don't want to make any trouble for someone who may have picked her up and is embarrassed to return her.  No questions asked!  If needed they could just drop her off at Cheltenham Animal Sanctuary saying they had just found her ..... whatever it takes to get her home as the girls are still very upset and missing her as we all are. Keeping the pecker up for now!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks loads Mollychops.  I really appreciate your kindness in having a wander around on Judy's behalf.  That hill gets you fit too!  It is a good place to walk dogs, but not very well known.  Also great to park at the Roman Villa car park and walk up the hill and into the woods.  I also walked around Witcombe Woods on Sat but nothing to see.  If it was Judy seen in Brockworth a few weeks ago, and she was making her way homewards slowly then this area would be a good cover area for her, with plenty of food to hunt.  I will try to make contact with the local gamekeeper there to see if he has noticed anything.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went with a friend to search this morning, I parked on the Stroud road out of Birdlip and walked down the wooded hill.   My friend checked reservoir area  at Whitcome, and around , but nothing to add im afraid.  Everyone we spoke to including a lovely lady riding a chestnut horse knew about Judy and were keeping an eye out.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No news since xmas eve.  But the lady in Hebdon Close was discussing with another local friend recently who also had seen the same dog around that time and they both agreed it wasn't one of the regular male black lab wanderers, so still might be Judy.  No sighting recently though - let's hope she is trying to come homeward?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Another sighting in Brockworth - Ebdon Close/Road? 6am Xmas eve.  Definitley a bitch not dog this time.  Very muddy - looks as if rough sleeping, possibly collar, but not sure.  Very timid but not unfriendly.  Took food thrown down for dog near front door but not let person get near enough to catch.  Looked OK, not overly thin, but not "owned".  When lady got up from dog level too quick the dog jumped over the front fence and ran off. Will keep in touch if another sighting. This person knows the other male dogs locally that wander and knows this is not the same one.  Also has her own dogs that have been recently whining at night unusually for them. Will keep in touch!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks furlover - a very kind gentleman who got to know of Judy's loss on a Glos chat website has already found the village website for Down Ampney and contacted the key places such as pub etc and emailed them a flyer to put up, bless him. I will get in contact with the lady that called as you suggest.  Another lady rang yesterday saying radio glos mentioned a black lab found in Tewkesbury in the past few days.  I checked with Chelt Animal Shelter (who are the dog warden service fore Tewks DC) and they haven't had anything in, and the only thing they knew of it could be is a black lab cross boy.  I haven't had much success contacting radio glos for clarification yet but will try tomorrow when the office is open again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm sorry I'm too far away to help  with postering etc for Judly and I keep my fingers crossed  it would so lovely to read that she is home with her family. Do you have the lady's no who rang  -  could she help in tracking the wandering lab. ?   ie putting food out in case the dog is still in the area. Perhaps she may be willing to contain the dog until either dog warden can collect or owner located. ? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just recieved a call from a lady in Down Ampney (3 miles east of Cirencester) who had a black lab come into her garden nervous and lost looking with no one around. Not sure if a collar or not.  The dog wasn't keen to be approached and wandered off again.  This sighting was on Monday 15th Dec and the lady rang as she has only today seen a poster.  She is dog knowledgable and did not recognise this dog as one of the village ones, hence why she got in touch once she saw the poster.  She kindly said she would put the word around her village to be on the lookout.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Reynard Just logged on      if anyone wants to mail me then of course it's fine. My address is  Arista161122@aol.com I just thought that there are quite a few black labs  both female and male  missing, so it would be helpful if someone finds one posted on another site about a found one or comes across one up for rehoming ,in any of the rescues  or pounds that they can then crosspost onto another. If I come across them I DO try to check for all the relevant missing ones on DL  and other sites too. Would be great if the owners  of missing dogs with similar descriptions could network it too !!!! xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks to everyone for keeping an eye out.  The lab I saw this morning was a boy, out on his own and nervous and on the skinny (fit looking) side for a lab but with a good shiny coat and brown leather collar with some silver fittings on it.  He obviously was happy in the area near the stream and woods and lived nearby.  The two labs that are known to wander in the area have now been discounted and I don't get the impression there is another dog stray in that area of Judy's description.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks loads for everyone's help and good wishes, it makes a huge difference.  I am going to concentrate on the most likely option that she is somewher not too far from Birdlip rooting around in the woods and looking after herself.  Crickley Hill, Coopers Hill, Painswick Beacon are her favourite haunts and tie in with possible early sightings around Cranham/ Royal William on A46.  If nothing else it is a good place to take a dog for a walk whilst looking!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Having spoken to the lady where the nervous dog was sitting outside, it appears she has a black lab male and choc lab female.  She does let the black lab out for a pee on his own from time to time and sometines even very early morning (4am), and he would be out on his own then and the mid morning sightings also tally with her shifts.  She also said (unprompted) that he will jump fences to get at food, and although he was obviously happy in his own house, she said he would not approach people he doesn't know.  Apparently he hasn't been eating as much at home recently! She hasn't seen any othe black labs around except for a well known male (who I have also seen). Thanks loads to everyone who has helped.  It seems this sighting is not Judy.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We went down this morning to replenish food which had all gone overnight.  We walked around and gave out flyers to various dog walkers etc and put up another obvious poster on the area of the street where the dog has been seen.  Also out flyers through all letterboxes of lower part of Trent Rd.  Various things cropped up:   1    The next door neighbour of the feeding station said she saw the same black lab again in the same lower part of Trent Rd this weds gone at 9.30 am ish.  Dog still nervous and ran behind a hedge about 6/7 doors down.   2    We spoke to a very nice dughter and mum at the very end of Trent Rd who have their own dog. They said they have also seen the black lab several times in the past week or so, not seen it before.  Very nervous, would not approach them, whimpering with fear and they were afriad to approach in case they were bitten, the dog was so nervous.  They have seen the dog sit outside the door (sunny position) of a house a few doors down from them on Trent Road 4 or so times usually mid mornings.  They do not know the owner of but think she has some cats and weren't sure if she has a dog.     We looked through the letterbox of this house after no reply from knocking.  A big dog barked several times.  Judy never used to bark hardly at all, but it is not completely inconcievable it could be her barking.  The dog appeared to be shut away in the kitchen behind a door so we couldn't see it.    I will go back again tomorrow morning to see if I can speak to anyone at the house.  A flyer was put through the door any way.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Watching here with baited breath.   Think I'd be inclined to put the trap down anyway, as long as it's being checked regularly and often.   Otherwise it could cost you a fortune in pilchards!   Come on Judy, lovely girl, we've all been waiting a long time to see you in the blue!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Replenished food in crate tonight and left lots of tins of pichards on doorstep as family are out tonight.   Food bowl licked clean this time (some food left around sides at 2.30pm).  I know the family have a cat and there must be plenty of other cats in the area too, so i am not holding my breath yet.   I have put more posters up and put flyers in the letterboxes of all the (7 or so) houses on the green this evening and spoken to a very kind and helpful Brockworth couple who have also taken some posters and flyers and will distribute them Witcombe side of the A46 too as well as get in touch with their dog contacts in the area of Brockworth where the sightings are.    I can't really believe how wonderful everyone is being.  If there is such a thing as karma I hope Judy is being swept along home soon......!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I spoke to the lady whoose dughter has been feeding the dog and she is happy to continue with this and agreed to me putting our dog crate in her front garden, which a friend and I did last night.  We covered the crate with some old NZ horse rugs and put Judy's bed and some smelly tracksuit bottoms etc in the crate with food at the back.  We also had a thorough walk around the area with torchlight and there are load of nooks and crannies alleyways and scrub areas a dog could hide out.  No sign of the dog though.  I need to get more posters up and drop flyers off with the poeple we talked to - everyone very supportive and helpful.   Having checked this afternoon, the food put out at the back of the crate has mostly been eaten. I will go down again tonight to put more food down and give out flyers, and tomorrow morning too if I can.  I assume we need to wait until we know it is definitely a black lab eating the food before we use the dog trap?  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went down this morning at 6am for an hour.  As I hadn't been able to get through to the family who have been feeding the dog, i just put some dog food on the grass in the open and waited to see if anything might happen. Nothing did apart from the dad of the family popping out to do the bins and letting their spaniel out at the same time who promtly ate the dog food! At least I was able to have a quick chat to the Mum and ask if it is OK to put some food down - I suspect we will only be able to do early morning food down as they are worried about encouraging foxes, which is fair enough.  I will go down again tonight and see if we can formulate a bit of a plan. I also called Gloucester City Council and Tewkesbury Borough Council to let them know what is happening and they said they would let me know if they are told of any sightings. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ive spent the afternoon in the sighting area, postering and talking to dog walkers, who were all very helpfull and will keep an eye open. Its a large park area surrounded by lots of alleys and footpaths, lots of wooded areas with dense cover where a dog could hide out. Lots of people had seen a black lab about loose. Then I Met a lady who told me she had seen a black lab bitch outside her house on the green, and had actually been feeding her to try to catch her!.The dog appeared thin scared and very hungry.  Her house is surrounded by a low fence which she jumps over to get at the food.  I Suggested she ups the feed quality ie pilchards[ offered to pay but she wouldnt accept anything] Rang Judys owners who will make contact, and  try to entice her further maybe with some familier beding, any suggestions anyone?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Didn't quite make stroud this morning but went this afternoon. Managed to put posters/flyers on cars in the Retreat carpark and the carpark opposite Police station, anyone who returned to their car whilst i was around were really responsive and interested. I don't think they minded as i was not trying to sell something. Going to the Lodge on minch common tonight so will cover cars there and pass on to owners to see if they will display providing one isn't already there! In cheltenham tomorrow so will take some more posters with me and distribute. Thinking of Judy and her owner xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I work locally in Stroud and we have a poster of Judy in our main reception area so will copy and distribute when walking my dog. My sister lives in Upton St Leonards and I will pass some on to her to. She walks her terrier every morning on the beacon and always looks out for her. I check this site daily hoping you have her back. I walk around the slad area wich does link up to painswick so will poster around there.  My other sister also works at the local vets and she is keeping an eye out.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hopefully The Glos Citizen is going to run an article for me this week or next which might jog someone's memory.  I have put posters in the Post Offices for Upton St Leonards, Brockworth, Matson, Painswick and Miserden.  I will try and get some more posters up around Witcombe, Up St Leo, Matson, Robinswood Hill and Painswick Beacon. I still feel it is most likely Judy was picked up by someone feeling sorry for her who decided she is so lovely they would stay quiet and keep her.  Logically if this is the case that person is likely to have been coming past our place to go north or south, the areas I have listed are possible destinations for a local.  If the Radionics is right the north of Cranham (Upton St Leonards side) is a logical route past our house. If this is the case the person with Judy is not likely to be out and about so much, otherwise (you would think) they might have noticed so many posters.  Maybe an older lady with a car who was lonely and wants company (Judy being ideal) who might not be aware of microchipping. I have spoken to our PCSO and various others locally and given them posters to put up in the local stations etc.  Is there anyone local to Gloucester who might be able to help with more postering - I haven't covered the pet food shops, supermarkets or local shopping centres in those areas, or much of the dog walking area, and any help with this would be fantastic?   Maybe we might get some news before Xmas.  The kids are hanging in there.....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've spoken to Cotsold DC (no dedicated dog warden in this area so I'm told).  They don't keep records of just sightings, only when someone reports they are holding a stray.  I tried to explain how much help it would be if they could let me know as and when there are any sightings and although they were sympathetic they wouldn't promise anything. Nevertheless they have no record of any black labs being held by anyone recently. I have also checked this morning with Teckles and Chelt Animal Rescue Centre.  The Stroud DC dog wardens are being great and they have told me that they keep an eye on this page to see what progress, so by that I assume they would let me know if any relevant sightings come up. I will try and get some posters up in dog walking areas in Cirencester as soon as I can.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A lady near Abbey Grounds in Criencester rang in response to the ad in the Standard.  She is a dog owner and saw a black lab mid week trotting along the road opposite Harry Hare's in Ciren.  Dog definitely on its own and a collar (can't remember a colour).  Mid sized lab and fits Judy's description. I walked around there sat morning and a few walkers I spoke to hadn't seen anything but would look out. I had sent emails to the tetbury vets with poster attached and also to the hunt secretaries for those countries.  This morning I have put laminated poster up at Crickley Hill and some of the laybys along the A417 Cirencester to Gloucester road I also spoke to chap in Kent who picked up a female black lab on Friday.  Although some white on chin no lump on this one's haunch and no chip so unlikley to be my girl. He is aware of the doglost website and no doubt the relevant owners will get in touch.  Seemed a nice bloke and straighforward so hopefully someone will be reunited soon.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A Dog owner called me to say she saw a black lab  that looked like Judy running towards Love Lane Cirencester near the Ewen crossroads (if you go from Ashton Keynes to Ciren) (near the VWH point to point course I gather). This sighting was about 2 weeks ago and the dog was running along the road on its own and she wished she had stopped as she felt really sorry for the dog, but there were other cars about and circumstances meant she didn't.  She was clear that the dog she saw was a black lab and very like Judy and she will keep a look out next time she passes that way.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have made contact with the very nice chap that 'saw' Judy...unfortunatly this was "2-3 weeks" ago....he saw her in Lower Wanborough...if she was taken and dumped in Wanborough it is a short distance away from the A419 which runs all the way to the area where Judy was last seen which is a lot of miles so she could not have got there on her own...Wanborough is not far from open countryside leading onto the Ridegway, and local Villages of Aldbourne,Chisledon, lambourn,Ogbourne St George,Badbury. Poster needs to be put up in and around Wanborough in case any one else knows anything... I will put posters up where I can but if anyone can give me a hand that would be fab, thanks.x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Mollychops - It would be great to have a fresh pair of eyes in Cranham and it is a lovely place to walk dogs anyway, that would be great if you could go that way on Sun.  There are lots of legitimate black labs in Cranham and I think most of the owners I have already spoken to about Judy so they will be aware of her and probably ok with you stopping them for a friendly chat. I will keep my mobile on me if you want me to get over to you sharpish for any reason.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

An advert for Judy will be in this week's Wilts and Glos Standard and also running all week in the Swindon Gazette and Advertiser (and also in their equestrian supplement next week).  I'm working on other counties press too. I am getting posters up slowly but it would be great if any one wants to help - there are loads of dog walking areas around here and I have got laminated posters that hopefully can stay put for a while.  I would like to get more media coverage as someone must know where she is?  Any ideas of how to go about this?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Now the weather has done its worst on the initial posters I am going to replace them with some laminated ones.  I am also going to send out posters to a further spread of vets, pet shops and animal feed merchants. I think it is also time to do some more newspaper adverts and further afield.  Any tips on getting these into pet magazines for instance (I have the contact details for the local rags)? Any other ideas about radio coverage as the commercial station are not interested.  Thanks for your input - it all makes a huge difference!   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Flagbag it was great to see a friendly face at the fair and thanks for your support.  See 15547:  There is a black lab bitch of the right age found in s derbyshire on tuesday, but having spoken to the dog warden she doesn't appear to be microchipped and seems to have fairly pronounced teats (recently had a litter?) and on heat so as Judy is spayed it is unlikely to be her.  This found dog also had a flourescent collar and harness on so unlikely to have been dumped.  Odd no one has claimed her yet though?  The description was close too - placid, friendly but timid and also on the fat side! The kennel owner felt the absence of a chip was conclusive that she is not my Judy, and I didn't get much further with our conversation.  The dog warden has my details so if nothing happens in a week I might go up and see for myself.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

the reason why i go to stow is to look for stolen dogs and try and help the ones that i feel are sick. if i feel something is stolen then i try and get the rspca to scan them for a chip.... i will look out for these for you and any others on this sight. i wont be able to take pictures as have tried that and they become agressive towards you... i must say at stow there is few lurchers there anymore, they are more likey to be at usk fair. at stow there is normally smaller dogs and pedigres, a lot of jack russells, springers and westies... i will really do my best everyone... in may i came home with 4 ducks and a very sick collie pup who is now the picture of health... I will try and list a discrition of the the dogs that i feel may have been stolen on this thread when i come back if thats ok....  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It is really hard being patient! Having spoken to a Cranham resident there still is a (dark haried?) youngish lady walking a black dog (on the lead?) on Cranham Common at weekends who I would like to check out if possible.  The locals don't seem to recognise her.  I just want to discount her if all is well. Information received may suggest she is being held by someone but also that Judy has been seen in the area so please contact the owner if you see or hear anything. Judy is a tipical Black Lab so you can identfy her by a fatty lump on her left haunch.  THANKS so much"

This is an email from Harriet judy’s owner. "Thanks Rose.  BBC Radio Glos did several mentions for me on Sat through the day which was great although nothing arising from this (yet?)  Also Stroud Radio is going to do a mention today.  No luck with the more commercial stations although they were sympathetic.
Rang around all local dog wardens again and impressed on them that I want to be notified and to see any black lab bitches they get in regardless of collar etc so hopefully the message is getting through.  One thing it would be fantastic to have some help with is to get a poster into every local vet surgery and again to impress on them to check every black lab bitch that comes in to see them - scan for chips too.  With the kids in tow it is really hard to get the time to physically do this so any help would be brilliant.
Spoke to a very helpful dog warden at Swindon Borough Council and she explained the dog watch scheme and confirmed Judy’s details have been circulated nationwide by this, which makes me feel a little better.
My next front is to send out a press release with sympathy factor for the kids missing her etc and some good photos of her with the girls.  This is to go to all local and pet rags so doing a draft tonight.  Someone somewhere knows where she is
Please feel free to upload this onto the dog lost website as I’m not having much sucess logging in myself.  If anyone wants to offer help my number is 07831 664616,  Many many thanks, Harriet"Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spoke to Judy's owner to-day it is possible that she was kept by a young ady soon after she went missing as was seen by someone out walking her and he confronted her as he had seen a poster and was preety sure it was Judy, this person may well not have known Judy was missing and was only being kind but shortly after this incidence Judy was seen wandering in Cranham so she either got away or was let loose and could therefore be making her way towards Painswick and then Stroud. The sightings have all been reported well after the event but they do seem to fit her description and the areas she has been seen...... so please look out for Judy ...Thanks.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spindle
Owner very proactive have called many DW ,Rescues etc more to do as now a weekend. Not sure what has happened to her as she may have gone off hunting as was just not at home when owner checked for her it is a rurual area but would have thought Judy would have come home by now. There was a suspicious vehicle after she went missing in area. So owner not sure what has happened really. Please local helpers keep a look out for Judy.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

May we have photo of Judy. It would make a great difference to her poster which you can put up everywhere you can think of. She is chipped so you have the best chance of getting her back. Hope she is home soon. Best wishes.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
