❤️ BENJI IS SAFE ❤️

Benji is a nervous ex rescue dog from Cyprus who went missing from his foster home in Eccles on 18th November 2019.

Benji’s rescue and a team of approximately 80 people in a messenger group all made efforts to circulate his story publicly. Benji’s rescue highlighted every sighting publicly on his page, whilst they may have thought this was the right thing to do, it led to Benji feeling essentially ‘hunted’ by the community.
Well meaning people began to make numerous attempts to grab him, follow him, chase him. After 8 days avoiding traffic and humans at all costs, it became quite clear that this approach was not working.

On 25th November Benji’s owner contacted us directly asking for our help and his rescue agreed to handover all sighting information and to remove any sightings from public viewing in order to give Benji the chance to calm down.

On 26th November the team spotted Benji using a thermal scope heading up a bank at the back of a quiet street in the Astley area where he had been seen a handful of times exiting the canal. Remote camera equipment and a large humane trap were put into place covering that area.

However, Benji was then chased and found himself on the slip road of a motorway from which he lost his bearings and ended up in Worsley. Eventually, a sighting that could prove fruitful came in of Benji on the golf course and the golfers were fantastic!

The golfers ignored Benji as requested and called to let us know he was still around whenever they sighted him. He began to use the golf course in attempt to avoid humans on the streets. He returned and was sighted regularly there throughout the day on 28th November. Remote equipment and a large humane trap were transported over to the golf course area leaving two areas covered going into that evening.

However, early morning on the 29th November Benji was followed out of the green area whereby he crossed the road and began to enter populated areas once again. A man then tried to grab him and he bolted onto the motorway. Benji was sighted in the middle of the central reservation, at rush hour!

Benji was extremely lucky to make his way off the motorway and found his footing back toward the canal path which he had clung to as his safe compass before he found himself on the motorway a few days earlier.

Everything went quiet for a few hours until a sighting was called in by a lady who we have subsequently discovered looks very similar to his owner. This lovely lady was pushing a pram, just as his owner does with her 4 month old daughter. She had walked past Benji on the canal bank and had ignored him. She had simply called the sighting in as had been requested frequently on his page. She had passed him and described on her call how she couldn’t stop as she had a baby that was due a feed and was pushing a pram. She described how she had walked past him but he had not moved and just looked at her. Our team member quickly recognised the significance of this call and hoped that this was the ‘lightbulb moment’ for Benji that we had all been waiting for and so she asked the lady to please give her ten mins of her time to follow some simple advice to test whether Benji was willing to trust her. The lady was conscious of the need to feed her baby but agreed to help. At 1.01pm this lady made her sighting call and at 1.11pm she was able to pet him and take hold of him by his collar. Benji was finally safe!

Apparently he sat next to some lady with a pram in the park and she grabbed him. Well done her.

Where was last sighting please?
Have owners consider leaving their smelly socks in a trail where he was last missing from??
lloyd
Have been out to Warrington Road Culceth the supposed last sighting, also went to Higher Green and Boothstown / Worsley using the East Lancs A580 road and back roads, working my way back to Swinton, searching for Benji but sadly no sighting of him
Bo
Benji s been seen in a relatively safe area today (fields rather than motorways). His previous owners have driven up from London to help find him. Last edited: 2019-11-22 19:59:39 by Bo

Benji is still missing, however sightings are coming in. If you see him, please do not chase him or try to catch him. Keep him in sight and contact the number above so the rescue can get straight to where he is. He’s at great danger on the roads he’s on as he’s in flight mode still. We need him to settle in an area so plans can be put in place. Thank you so much to everyone who is helping xx

Thank you Bo.

Stay safe Benji until found xx

Benji was adopted originally roughly 18 months ago and lived in London. His owners gave him up so he went to rescue back up which was in Manchester in the last few days. He went out on foster at 5pm last night and by 8pm had escaped the house. Looks like a cockerpoo , quite a small dog. Doesn’t know the area.
