A week ago, our local dog warden Rachel Hart
who is also a valuable member of our team at Beauty's Legacy - Reuniting lost/stolen animals, promoting animal welfare
was alerted by a member of the public about a large dog that appeared to be stranded on the river bank of the river trent in Newark.
We then spent five days visiting him, having to cadge a lift on a boat from Newark Marina. We lay in the grass day after day, gaining his trust and feeding him in the same place at the same time each day. The concerns were growing as the weather got worse and we were concerned about the interest he was attracting from passers by, as there was a risk of him being spooked and a very busy road nearby not to mention the river. Over the weekend I asked Dawn Johnson
from LOST DOG Capture Team CIC
if we could borrow her large trap for him and her expertise in trapping... Without hesitation Dawn travelled over on Monday, a 3 hour round trip, and with kind permission from the land owner we set up the trap. I cant thank Dawn enough, for her time help support and equipment... what a person to learn from. He was afraid of it understandably and we left it unset but monitored with cameras, and Rachel and I continued to feed him for a further two days, but putting the food in the trap and he soon saw it as his safe place going in and out and even sleeping in it at one point. He had reached the point that he was waiting patiently in the same spot every day for his meal.
Today we returned and this time we set it. He was in and caught within a couple of hours.
He is an absolutely beautiful boy and is now in a nice warm heated kennel, having a much needed sleep and feeling warm and safe for the first time in weeks. I can not thank enough all the local people who kept us informed of his movements, the owner of the land for letting us visit him daily before trapping him, James and the other marina staff for the daily lifts over and the overall support, and of course to Dawn for dropping everything and bringing the trap over so that we could get him safe as quickly as possible.
So proud of everyone in our team and who we work with, and everything we achieve...another one safe. Today is the start of your happy ever after big lad. ❤ Beauty's Legacy - Reuniting lost/stolen animals, promoting animal welfare facebook page x - 2020-05-15 21:31 Scruffy Dog - Central Team Volunteer
