I am just so pleased that Esme is home. It is lovely to see the re-united photo.  Stay safe now oh big one.  Dogs get frightened and confused very quickly when they are lost. Owners get very upset and so so not understand why their dogs do not instantly recognise them and usually start calling and running toward them. (we’ve all done it)  It just frightens them more and they run away & hide, ’tis the nature of the beast. BUT, they are curious and will approach if they hear whimpering and because the person is laying down they do not feel threatened and will continue approaching. Hey presto, caught and on their way home...judy

Brilliant news - welcome home Esme!!! I'm so pleased for her owners. What great team work and, as as said before, fantastic advice from Teddy's Mum - to lie down and whimper. I must remember to add that one to my repertoire when advising owners with nervous or scared dogs! Esme's curiosity certainly got the better of her. I can just hear her thinking 'What on earth is her up to - he's clearly lost the plot' - LOL. Well done everyone and pleased to hear that Esme will be receiving a chip as a welcome home present.

DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
Message from owners:   To all at Doglost.
A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has helped, offered support and shown
so much kindness during the awful three week period before we found
Esme.
A special thanks goes to Jude who passed on all the details of Esme's
adventures to Dog Lost (I am completely useless on computers plus I was
too traumatized), for her support via the phone for many an hour, also
to all the area co-ordinators, to Lynn Page plus friends and Sue
Williams who tracked many a mile in pursuit of Esme.
Also a big thank you for the suggestions to lie down and whimper, it
worked, when Esme finally recognized me and jumped on me, licking me,
the emotion was overwhelming.
Once again thank you so much, without the support we received we are
sure we would never have got our lovely Esme back.
Margaret and David Thorne.
PS Hope the photo of the happy reunion is OK as the flash on the
camera would not work.

Many many congratulations to everyone who has helped get Esme home, David and Margaret, and Jude, and your fantastic team.  I was so pleased to get the text from majorjet this afternoon, and have only just been able to get on. It realise it has been particularly hard for you during the firework period, and to get her back unscathed is absolutely brilliant. Have a lovely weekend everyone, and welcome home Esme xx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 14th November 11am   Esme the Bernese bitch who had gone missing from her home in Henfield, West Sussex on 24th October was finally reunited with her owner this morning, Friday 14th November ? a full three weeks after she left home which included the fireworks/bonfire period which must have been terrifying for her.  Esme has led everyone a merry dance, several close encounters with her were met with her absolute unwillingness to approach her owner or anyone else and she seemed intent on remaining free ? and she seems to have been fairly successful in looking after herself during her unscheduled freedom as she appears to be in remarkably good condition albeit a bit thin ? clearly a very resourceful dog. Numerous sightings of Esme were reported as she travelled mostly within the area between Henfield and Horsham, within the corridor between the A24 and A281 with a posse of searchers following up every reported sighting although Esme was finally reunited with her owner David in Lower Beeding which is where she has remained for the past couple of days - it is just east of her previously favoured area. Distracted by the presence of another dog, David managed to get close to Esme and by lying down and whimpering/crying, recognition and realisation of who he was finally and suddenly kicked in and Esme gave herself up.  Very emotional for all concerned.  Owner Margaret rang me immediately to share the news and ask me to circulate this longed-for and happy conclusion -  what a HUGE relief for everyone who has followed the story, not least those who have invested hours and hours in the relentless search for Esme.   Margaret and David Thorne wish to give their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped, offered support and shown so much kindness to them and Esme during this awful three week period.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

1am 14th November I spoke to Esme's owners earlier tonight.  Esme was seen several times today by her search party and owner David had a close encounter with her this afternoon but despite being non-confrontational Esme barked at him and ran off.  David and Margaret are very disappointed but still hopeful for a happy reunion although it is extremely unlikely that Esme will approach anyone voluntarily. Margaret and David are hoping that Esme may return, tomorrow, to feed in an area she has been reported as having visited a couple of times within the past few days so are hoping that baiting that area will present an opportunity to confine her.  Jude - Bernese Welfare UKLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just a thought - I remember a bloodhound who lives in Horsham finding a child last year. Googled blood hound club - working trials and came up with
Martin Page,
Phone :01373 836 047 - he may know of a local dog also Lowland search dogs - based in Billingshurst
secretary@lsdogs-sx.org.uk
chairman@lsdogs-sx.org.uk
they are members of the public who assist police with searching for missing people - maybe they could be interested in an excercise helping pinpoint Esme.
Judging by the last few sitings she is gradually working her self in the right direction - good luck Esme...

Latest update 7pm Wednesday 12th November Latest confirmed sighting Wednesday afternoon, 12th November 2008
Esme's search posse just missed her by about 15 minutes today!   There was a definite sighting in the playing field behind Lower Beeding Village Hall (Leechpond Hill, Lower Beeding, Horsham, W Sussex, RH13 6NR)  which is situated on the B2110 near Leonardslee Gardens.  The hall/field is in the top end of triangle of 3 roads.    Esme's owner will remain in that specific area tonight and the search will resume in that area tomorrow.
Unfortunately a huge number of people would be needed to encircle the boundary made by those three roads but if anyone should see Esme then extreme caution will be needed if there is to be any attempt to usher her into any suitable, safe, restricted area.
Please call  01273 492271  or   07770 559431  to report any new sightings  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Latest news 1pm Wednesday 12th November.  The most recently reported, confirmed sighting is that Esme was seen on Monday 10th November at approx 4pm at Plummers Plain which will have involved her crossing the A281 and is approx 3 - 4 miles north-east of the Nuthurst area where she had previously been sighted.   There have been two subsequent, unconfirmed sightings of a dog that MAY have been Esme;  a possible sighting at 4am on Tuesday 11th November at Dial Post which is on the A24 (back within her most favoured area) but much further south (it's down near West Grinstead).  The 2nd possible sighting was at 9am Tuesday 11th November in the Denne Park area of Horsham which is again in Esme's most favoured area but about 7 - 8 miles north of Dial Post although only approx 4 miles west of the confirmed Plummers Plain sighting the previous day.   Jude - Bernese Welfare UK  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

That's really good advice teddys mum. You are quite right, as curiousity would get the better of most dogs. Hope this works with Esme when her family next get close enough. Hope it won't be long until Esme throws in the towel!

Thanks Teddys Mum for posting your advice. Update tonight from Jude (Bernese Welfare): Most sightings of Esme have been between Horsham and Henfield in the area sandwiched between the A24 and the A281 and the latest sighting within this area was Saturday 8th November 2008.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is excellent news. Because Esme has been out a while she is now very bewildered. Even with owners she will shy away. This is quite normal behaviour. What I would suggest is that when she is next seen, lay down and whimper, her curiosity will get the better of her and she will probably approach. Have some food/treats in your hand and stay BELOW her level. Try not to have direct eye contact. Good luck, I hope she is home very soon.

On Friday 7th November the search party was out following up sightings in Sedgwick Park and saw Esme from about 100 feet away, but she bolted.  The owner's daughter also saw her in a field and managed to approach her to within just a few yards but Esme chose to bolt off.   There have been subsequent sightings reported today (Saturday 8th November) in the Sedgwick Park  and Saxton' Farm areas of Nuthurst.  David, Esme's owner believes that Esme has heard him calling but is choosing to ignore him.   New sightings should be reported to David and Margaret on 01273 492271 or 07770 559431 but they respectfully request that no one should attempt to call or approach Esme (if she looks OK) for fear of chasing her out of the area she has been seen in during the past few days.   Jude - Bernese Welfare UKLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Has anything been done with regard to plotting her sightings, how about organising a 24hr (if poss) vigil at the places she has been sighted, don't think a search would be in the best interest of Esme as she is so not into people and it might push her further afield. Am off work now for the next week can we organise anything for this family, any takers. LesleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have emailed poster to Architectural Plants & Black Horse Inn, Nuthurst and the Camellia Bockner Foundation, Maplehurst The White Horse doesn't appear to have an email address. Farm watch have emailed farmers in the area and I have asked them to widen the mail list. Bearing in mind 5th November was Guy Fawkes, she could of made it to Cowfold as it is only about 3 miles away and in the direction of Henfield!! Lets hope she has had enough of searching for mum and decided to head home!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Margaret Thorne has just called me (2.15pm Friday 7th November) to report that she has just received a confirmed sighting of Esme who was seen on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th November in the Foresty Commission Woods between Nuthurst and Maplehurst.  This would now seem to tie in with and give more credence to the subsequent albeit unconfirmed sighting at Cowfold the following day. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just spoken to Margaret, Esme's owner (11.45am Friday 7th November)  Margaret has been told that a "large black dog" was seen in fields at Cowfold on Thursday 6th November - Cowfold is approx 8 miles from the previous confimed sighting of Esme.  Margaret is not convinced that the Cowfold sighting was Esme so at this stage is regarding that information as a "possible" sighting.   The previous confirmed sighting of Esme was on Tuesday 4th November on the Golf Course at Horsham Golf & Fitness, Denne Park, Worthing Road, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 0AX

I think plotting Esmes sitings is a great idea, if she is visiting golf clubs and super markets (Sainsbury's is about a mile from the golf Course) she maybe searching for food so I have emailed her poster to Christs Hospital School which also has a busy gym, also the Boars Head pub, Horsham Cricket club and squash club all are within a mile of the Horsham Fitness Golf course. I have asked them to display posters but will put some up at Christs Hopital Station and along the road.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi - Just been reading the thread. Dont know if anyone is plotting these sightings, as this is the way forward. Esme is probably moving on a regular route. If you can plot this route, you can make a safe place on it, with bits of her bedding, clothing that owner and family have worn, smelly food and water. If you then keep placing food here at dawn and late aftenoon, she will return to this place, and stay around the area. It is the best way to contain her now otherwise you are just wearing yourselves out. If you can keep her in this one area, it may also be possible to get a trap placed there, but it would have to be manned constantly. However you may not need that. She may just give herself up. But be warned - if you see her, sit or lie down and speak quietly. In no way try to catch her otherwise she will be off. Just have a slip lead with you and hope she will come near for food, a squeeky toy, or the sound of your voice. You can also try walking away, gently calling and hope she will follow.   Good Luck for tomorrow.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just spoken to David, Esme's owner (10pm Wednesday 5th), and he wanted to clarify that the latest sighting of Esme has been confirmed as being on the Horsham Golf and Fitness Club Course which is further South than the Rookwood Golf Course.  David is distraught and absolutely exhausted but asked that I ensure that everyone knows how eternally grateful he and Margaret are for all the help and advice they have received. that would be Rookwood golf course, it borders the A24 their number is 01403 250168 , this is about 1/2mile from Tescos in one direction and a mile from Warnham, both areas she has been sited - Sainsburys is way into town. If she is in this area can we organize a search tonight I can get some friends together and we know the area well - she must be hungry by now! I used to have a dog that ran off on walks and I would  leave a sock where I parked the car, when I went back some hours later he was always laying down with the sock, can the owners bring her bed or some clothing?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for the poster, I have emailed it to the vets I listed below as well as doggy days out, council, Crawley& Horsham hunt kennels, Sussex Horse Watch and Farm watch asking them to circulate to their members. Does Esme come from the area , is that why she has made her way here? Perhaps someone/owner can call Mecury radio and ask them to mention her over the air, she has probably been spotted by lots of people who do not realize she is lost. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Margaret the owner has just rung me (4pm Tuesday 4th) with the news that she has received a confirmed sighting of Esme on Sunday evening in the centre of Horsham. It seems that someone witnessed Esme taking a glancing blow from a car but she ran off and was seen again a short distance away near Sainsbury's, apparently running with no obvious ill effects from the collision with a car.  Esme was last seen heading South West, possibly n the direction of Southwater. Esme was seen again on Sunday evening in Tescos carpark at Broadbridge Heath but by the time her owners arrived, she had gone. The owners are happy to have their phone number put on this site, otherwise I cannot see how they can be contacted. Maybe it is just me but I can't print off any posters of Esme. Can anyone else? The contact numbers are 0777 055 9431 or 01273 492271  They are constantly out searching and hoping so the mobile is probably the best option. SandraLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Esme has been sighted a few miles away from Henfield where she was lost. Yesterday (Sat 1st Nov) she was seen in Broadbridge Heath and prior to that in the Warnham area. Her metal name tag was seen by the police who were called because she was on the road. She ran away in fright. Esme is a very nervous dog at the best of times. She will be TERRIFIED. I doubt she will ever be caught by anyone she does not know so please, carry the owner's phone number with you and do not attempt to catch her, just ring the owner. Esme will be doubly terrified because of the fireworks. She will not approach people but has always related well to dogs.  Sandra,      Bernese Mountain Dog Club of GB Rescue co-ordinator (01202 872217)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bernese Mountain Dogs are still pretty rare and very distinctive (though some people think they're some sort of St Bernard cross) so Esme should stand out if she is somewhere she shouldn't be.
One of my bosses lives in Horsham and I will ask him to keep an eye out when he is walking his dog.  Unfortunately, I'm not at work this week but I will try to get some posters to him too.  Good luck.

Do double check all rescues and pounds dont rely on them coming back to you ,plaster the area with posters and through doors so who ever may have picked her up can see her owner is looking for her.

I spoke to the owner at teatime yesterday as soon as I heard that Esme was missing. I immediately posted a message about her and an appeal for news/sightings to the bernese-in-gb e.mail group, circulated the Bernese breed clubs and posted a notice about her loss on the Bernese Welfare UK website at www.bernese.tv  Jude - Bernese Welfare UK National coordinatorLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Take it you've spoken to the vets and stonepit kennels, few years ago we had a litter of puppies left in the close, the dog warden sent out Old Clayton Boarding kennels to collect them worth a call 01903742930. Have you spoken to the police, even though they have no more to do with lost dogs they still compile listings of calls regarding lost dogs,Horsham dog warden (out of hours) 01403215100,Crawley Borough Council 01293 438000,all worth a try as we are in such a funny area.LesleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
