To all commenting, thank you so much for your help and advice. Dexter has been found after a long search. He ran over crags and has a number of injuries, now in dog icu but for the best

Watson - if you can, stay close to where Dexter ran off as he may track back to find you. If you drove to car park someone should wait in car with door open and run engine from time to time, the familar scent and sound will get carried in the breeze and may draw him back.
