- From Tiffany's page well done to everyone involved. "SAFE – TIFFANY, a very nervous Bosnian rescue that escaped on the 28th October whilst on a walk near her foster’s home in Warlingham. Tiffany had previously escaped from her foster home on 19th September and was trapped on the 8th of October near East Croydon. Although she had travelled the 3 miles by car to the area where she went missing, after 2 days there were sightings of her close to home but the wrong side of a rail line – efforts were made to guide her along a route under it but she decided to move on and was sighted a further 3 miles away to the east eating roadkill. The odd sightings continued to be reported around the area but were never confirmed on camera. On 13th December she was sighted several times in fields she had initially been sighted in just after she escaped. Over the following days she was confirmed feeding on camera and the process of trying to trap her for a 3rd time began (she had also escaped from a Vulcan trap that had been placed by a friend when she had previously escaped from home).
Tiffany was the ultimate dog in survival mode – she knew traps meant danger, that humans weren’t to be trusted under any circumstances and that to keep herself safe she needed to find her own safe place and food sources. She would sit surveying her territory, and could be seen on camera rolling in the sun and grooming herself. During the time we have been working with her, there were New Year fireworks, storm Bella, cows, birds of prey, foxes (battery pack box missing!), iced up cameras, well meaning dog walkers, and a rubbish burning site that all meant set backs. It has been a journey of camera work and analysing her behaviour each step of the way, and understanding the location and her routes and the routines of the locals and Tiffany. Initially a box trap was used as last time she was trapped in an enclosure trap - she seemed to like it and would actually sit in it (possibly guarding it) but despite time and using different baits and techniques we felt we couldn’t rely on her not stretching the length if the trap and triggering the footplate with the risk of her beating the door or injuring herself. So an enclosure trap was set up and just as it seemed we were getting close and ready to set it storm Bella hits – after that she didn’t want to enter it at all. The following weeks have been a mix of ensuring Tiffany was well fed to cope with low temperatures and encouraging her back into the enclosure – the list of concoctions tried is long and some very smelly!!! She gradually learnt our daily routine and would be sat waiting for the trap to be baited and camera battery packs to be changed - barking if she felt is was taking too long! Finally our patience paid off and on 27th January Tiffany’s 3 months of freedom came to an end.
Note - during this time her rescue did consider darting but for several reasons and the fact that Tiffany was not in immediate danger they felt trapping was the preferred option.
Huge thanks to landowner Jim, for his understanding, to locals Rob and Sam who helped with moving equipment and making sure other locals were aware to ignore Tiffany and not leave food waste accessable, to local helpers and especialy Val for help with posters and food supplies, to Laura from Missing Dogs and Strays in Thanet for the loan of additional trapping equipment, and trapper Trevor for his bait suggestions 🙈." - 2021-01-27 17:41 csquaredb
