Hi Countrylovers, Rayleigh falls under Rochford Council......as they told you, they do not employ a dog warden. Sue at Acres Way Kennels is contracted to collect the strays for them. I think this situation has been confused by the stray Lurcher picked up from Canvey that she told you about. This lurcher is now also listed on Doglost as Sue sends found dog details through to me (ID 16278) and as you say he is a male and was found on 14th Dec. Canvey although local is a long way from the area this dog was sighted in in Rayleigh so the same dog can't have made its way from Rayleigh to Canvey by itself, plus anyway the Canvey dog was picked up before this one was sighted. I would guess that maybe no one has reported this dog that was only sighted to the council therefore Sue had not been asked to collect so knew nothing about it. I know the area well where this dog was sighted (ride my horse round there) and there are a lot of dog walkers and also some houses near by so I would have expected there to have been more reports if the dog is still loose but you can never presume these things! I will take a drive down there at the weekend and have a look around. What I think I will do is put a poster up asking if anyone has sighted a loose dog of that description and ask them to call Doglost. There are a couple of people I know of that walk Greyhound/Lurchers of a similar description round that area so this sighting could have been one of those who got a bit of a distance from the owner but I will check it out. The good thing is there are houses, stables etc nearby so if a dog is out loose there will be shelter etc and I would imagine someone would spot it soon. I hope that all makes sense and has helped clarify things a bit!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
Countrylovers
Hi Guys, I'm sorry the more I think about this the more I think its 2 different dogs.  You see I was told by the council that they only use this one kennel as they dont have a dog warden for the area but after thinking about it the male dog they have was picked up in canvey and although I have lived in scotland for many years now my geography isnt that bad that I had fogotten that Canvey isnt near Rayleigh.  So I belive that the council mislead me you see they told me that they dont have a local warden and that they use this particular kennels to collect dogs.  Well with this little ray of hope I am praying that maybe this other dog that was seen in the park might be Jess you see it just sounded like Jess as when we used to take her out she always ran to the car afterwards to go home and Jess is also a very timid dog.  I built my hopes up today and then came back to earth with a bang, but I would like to ask that please if anyone in the area of the park and they see this dog please try calling Jess's name or shaking a bag of dog biscuits (her favourite treat).  Or if anyone knows of any other wardens/kennels in the area that may have picked her up please let me know i dont mind making loads of calls but at the moment I am at a loss of where to go next. thank youLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have spoken to the lady who contacted us about this dog.....she saw it at a distance so wasn't able to catch it herself. She is unsure of the sex but it was a honey coloured greyhound or possibly smooth coated lurcher. The dog was wandering around looking a bit lost and going up to other dog walkers but watching slightly from afar. Seen in Grove Woods car park (Rayleigh, Essex), which is by the field with the bike ramps in it....last headed over into the field towards other dog walkers. The lady who called is only visiting the area and has no additional info. She did try to contact the local dog warden earlier but could get hold of the council. I will contact the local council and also the kennels that take the strays from this area to see if anything reported/picked up. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
