Just noticed, Scruffpot, you posted on Hugo's 5th birthday! Happy Birthday, boy!
HainesGSP
Thank you for keeping Hugo in mind! I've contacted DogTrust and waiting for reply. I may have missed Norman as I couldn't find him on their site.
Scruffpot
There is a 2-5 years old GSP up for rehoming on the Dogs Trust site in Loughborough. I thought of Hugo when I saw his pic. May be worth a look. He's listed under 'Norman' http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dog/1098365/norman#.UPsfHx2Zaxk

Sad not to find Hugo. Happy lost GSP can go home. Strangely, hope restored that we may yet find our boy! A x

I have spoken to the kennels and sadly it's not Hugo. The found dog is micro-chipped and the kennels are in the process of trying to trace his owner.

Thank you HainesGSP I received the photos and will be sending them onto the kennels today x
HainesGSP
Will be emailing photos of Hugo to Helen as soon as I can retrieve them from old computer to see if any markings stand out as identifiable. Helen will be in touch with the council tomorrow morning.

Hugo, could you be in Colchester? Trying not to get too excited about the possibility... Paula Thank you for calling me, Jayne, thank you for guiding me. Let's see where this leads, fingers crossed...

It's been very quiet. No calls with even possible sightings for many weeks now.  But I am ever so grateful that I still receive calls from Team Hugo and other interested people we've spoken to just checking in for news and giving encouragement! I've put it off as long as possible, but have had to change my mobile number. New number is: 07787 117 212. Any Hugo messages can be left on the old or the new phone for now. I will email our Team with updated posters and fliers with the new number on this week.  Please let me know if you would like me to post you a supply.  If there are any posters still up and around, I would be chuffed to bits if they could be replaced with the new ones I send out this week.  At your convenience of course! All best for now, A xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to say that, like MJ, I walk in the Oxshott/Sandy Lane Esher area most days. Telling any dog walkers I meet that this lad is still wandering about and giving them a poster so they have the number to hand.  So hopefully word is still circulating even if posters put up are being removed.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Me too! It seems for all our efforts Hugo just won't be found. I think he'll only be found when he decides to be found--please make it soon our boy! And thank you to everyone for keeping him in your minds and keeping your eyes open for him...I really hope one of Team Hugo gets to be the lucky one he turns himself in to.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I walk in the same area every week-end now (week days when I can too) and drop food here and there. I left a poster for the rangers at their hut....in evidence on their sheltered work bench under stones..a bit in their face....!!!..I tried under the door but not poss! Left food around there too in order to attract H and orchestrate a "blind date" with the rangers!!!! (not with me....with Hugo of course!!!).Give out more posters and some people are so relieved to see that the search is still going on...All for the mo!...wearing brown socks....does that count???!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked all around Sandy Lane/Oxshott, up to and over the road bridges to Esher Common & Black pond again today. Only met one other dog walker to give a poster to but they said they would pass the word that he is still on the loose and probably in this area. Surely one of us will eventually be in the right place at the right time !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy:
Adriana:  when you have produced new posters,  please do also consider suggestion I made to you ages ago about organising large notice boards on sticks to put up at roadsides at junctions. These are produced by people who do estate agents 'For Sale' boards and were used with great success by Amanda, owner of Digby (border terrier stolen from RH5 a year ago and found in Kent, thanks to one of these large placards). I can put you in touch with Amanda if you email me. Regarding door-to- door flyers, there are actually loads of houses in the Sandy Lane and Fairmile area backing on to Esher Commons, so it is a big and time- consuming job to deliver all these. Maybe something you can do at the weekend Adriana? With DL helpers as well. Regarding rangers:  I believe the bit of Esher Common off Sandy Lane is managed by Oxshott Heath Conservators (run by Mr and Mrs Garlick who live in cottage by Oxshott station and are v.
aware of Hugo). Over the A3 in managed by Elmbridge council, so maybe contact them direct? I too met nice GSP people at Surrey Union Point to Point last weekend at Peper Harrow, Nr Guildford. Gave out lots of flyers;  many GSP's there and all owners v. helpful and sympathetic and will spread the word. PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you Maggie's Mum for letting me know you're there watching out and postering at GSP events--very cool! Thank you everyone for your quick response! What a crack team Hugo has, always in button down mode! I am at work this week, stealing a moment now to illegally log on to DL, will email an updated poster tonight. I agree he has found a good spot, happy rabbit hunting and road kill easy meals, and think at this point he is less likely to be scared off his territory by use of his name.  As you said, if he even remembers it. So will continue to have Hugo on the posters. Thank you also to my Whippet friend in Claygate who rang to check in yesterday, and will be walking the area today.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Been following Hugo's antics since the begining but as can't be of any help haven't posted but just wanted to say what a fantastic job everyone is doing and I really hope that Hugo pays attention and gets his bum back on the sofa where it belongs and quickly.  Husband off to a GSP get together at Lightwater on Sunday and will get him to hand out flyers and posters, I'm sure they're already aware but a little reminder doesn't hurt.  Good Luck everyone and fingers crossed Hugo goes into the blue soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I managed a quick walk over there yesterday and only saw on person - who gave me a very odd look as I didnt have a dog! Getting posters to the rangers over there is a must. I wont have much time this week as Im catching up after a week off but can print posters/handout's for anyone that needs them if A can email me an updated version (or I can doctor an old one)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Good gracious as you can see I've appeared twice !  First time I put the message on it disappeared and didn't show on screen, so I tried to remember what I'd said and did it again.......sorry, yet another senior moment !  I've walked today in 'the' area from the start of Sandy Lane, zig zagging thru the woods all along that side of the A3 round the Lake at the Cobham end and back again. Pocket stuffed with posters to hand out (albeit rather out of date but I've written on yesterdays sighting) I didn't meet one person, with or without a dog. Maybe they are hiding from me . Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Mulling this over.......I haven't been tuning in as regularly as usual due to one of my dogs being very ill, been totally distracted ! I'm not sure if I've got the latest poster but can we get a new one done that mentions MAY so that people know this is an ongoing situation and stressing recent frequent sightings in the specific area of Black Pond/Esher Common/Oxshott/Sandy Lane, all interlinked areas, not that far apart. Probably best done as fliers which we can give out as posters seem to get taken down very quickly. Maybe if the rangers knew about these sightings they might not be so aggressive with their poster removal, perhaps they wouldn't even keep a flier with them. There are several houses backing onto the area of those cabins and the woodlands in Sandy Lane, not that many, it wouldn't be difficult to put fliers thru letterboxes along there.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I was tootling thru those woods off Sandy Lane  myself yesterday. Must have passed the  cabins and machinery place about 11.30am. Too early for Hugo obviously.  I put yet another poster in the car park further down Sandy Lane, two were already in the first one. Some **** keeps taking down the one I put in that 2nd car park. It makes me so cross. There are posters for other things AND they are on trees, which we are told not to do, but they don't get taken down ! Should we be suspicious ?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The way to get there for anyone interested: from the Copsem car park, walk towards the 2nd bridge accross the A3, then over, take the path straight ahead "Oxshott". As you walk you will see a mount of gravel in the middle of a path (been there for ages). If you walk on you will see the machineries and portakabin of the rangers on the left.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Then I walked back towards the Copsem car park still looking...It might be an idea to contact the rangers as they might have seen him or could start paying attention and could call you if they see him. On the other hand they have taken all but 2 of the posters down on Esher Common..so not very helpful......!!!The strange thing is that on Saturday, same sort of time, I was there too with a friend and 2 dogs, and her dog suddenly went shooting into the bushes very close to the spot where he might have been seen and she stayed there for a while. Her body language did not show that she had found food or a prey and I did say to my friend that I thought she might have seen/smelt Hugo and I was trying to see through the bushes if I could spot him .....kind of obsessed really!!! but I might have been right!!!?????Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello! Yesterday was very spooky! I was just dreaming/thinking " what if I see Hugo now (I was by the pond at Esher Common 1.30pm)?, I would need to call Adriana and as many people as poss would have to come and help me trail him and catch him blah blah blah.....then my phone rang...Paula...a possible sighting meters away from where I was....!!!!Oh my God!!!!....So I was at the spot (well chosen Hugo if I may say myself!!!) in no time and spent an hour there calling (yes I think the silence bit has not worked and to try and get him to show his face, if he still remembers his name, then why not start calling him at least until he comes nearer to investigate then perhaps stop......what do we have to lose????). But he did not show and noone saw him in the surrounding area. But it is a good hiding place and bang in the middel between Oxshott Heath and Esher Common, right by the A3 (there are fences) and loads of rabbits and road kills.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I seem to have a shorter list of GSP owners than I thought. If anyone reading this knows of other GSPs in the area, either liver and white or black and white or solid, could you please forward their owners’ contact numbers to me, or mine to them, so I can be really thorough when these sightings come in to eliminate other people’s GSPs.  Nothing worse than getting excited and chasing the wrong dog! Or bitch, as happened in Oxshott more than once... In fact, if anyone knows how to reach the owner of the Oxshott bitch who is known to frequently escape her garden, please put me in touch (she is liver and white, much more white than Hugo, but to people who don’t know Hugo it’s an easy mistake to make).  Many thanks to all!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sunday at Polesden Lacey sounds like a day of fabulous success for spreading the DogLost word (am I sounding evangelical? preaching to the converted?). Well Done to everyone handing out Hugo fliers and renewing the posters--I've been getting calls--interest is renewed and the addition of Hugo's name has really moved people.  A couple of calls have been purely curiosity--have we got Hugo back yet, or promises of keeping eyes open. But one call was a 4 week old SIGHTING with a very familiar scenario: a woman who saw a new poster at Black Pond that noted the 15 April Sandpit sighting was very excited to report that Hugo had run up to her friend's dogs near the sandpit then off again. She was sad that it was so long ago and will now keep my number in her phone... Paula, thank you for poster printing and distributing! Will try to sort my printer this week... This next weekend I am in York again (wellies always in car with Hugo's unwashed blanket, tins of pilchards, etc) and waiting for May work rota so not sure when I can get down but I'm chomping at the bit.  I feel we may see him soon! Had a lovely lovely dream last night: Hugo saw me sitting on the grass and he slowly walked up to me into my open arms. I awoke with a huge smile on my face! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Sunday was Polesden Lacey Dog Day (Polesden is our local NT property between Bookham and Dorking, with masses of good dog-walking country). The idea was to encourage local dog walkers to be responsible when walking in the countryside, with NT wardens, tenant farmer, NT staff on hand to answer questions and give advice. There was Kennel Club Bronze Award training and tests and have-a-go agility, plus tenant farmer's livestock, ferets, chickens in pens and owners were encouraged to get their dogs used to be amongst livestock (there has been quite a problem of dogs attacking and chasing sheep on the estate recently). Paula and I were there all day and Jo came along in the afternoon. We had notice board displaying our three local missing dogs (Hugo, Winston and Edmond). Made lots of useful contacts, gave out posters to many local dog walkers (many had heard of Hugo), also to gundog people with lovely rescue Weimeranas, farmers, wardens, sheepdog lady, agility people etc.  Made really useful contact in Nigel Edwards, Vice Chairman & Head of Inspectorate of National Association of Security Dog Users, who showed real interest in the work we do at DogLost and will distribute posters and information among his contacts. He has useful police contacts.  A really nice, non-commercial, fun and informative day and hopefully we have flagged up awareness for our local missing dogs and maybe recruited a few more local helpers. Also met Dylan the Bedlington terrier, who went missing last year from Fetcham and turned up at Ranmore two weeks later! (see reunited pages). And my dog Skipper had a fun day too . . . . . Gave out loads and loads of posters at Oxshott this morning, most people you meet there walk in all the 'Hugo places'.   People are going to start hiding behind trees when they see 'Team Hugo' personnel advancing, brandishing bits of paper ! So far haven't met anyone who isn't very excited at the possible sightings and on the lookout with renewed vigour.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy:
Went to Garsons Farm this afternoon and left a batch of Hugo posters (old ones, amended by hand) in the general manager's office. PYO starts this weekend and they will display posters in the kiosks on the farm for public to see as well as giving to field workers and farm manager, who are out early in the mornings and more likely to see Hugo if he is around. Poster is also up in staff-room and all staff I spoke to are aware of Hugo and showed interest.
Have now totally run out of posters and flyers  -  Adriana can you post me some more if you have time before going away. Otherwise, I can print (slowly!) at home and Paula is producing another batch for the weekend. I also dropped Hugo and Edmond posters (didn't have a Winston one on me) in at Henderson, Keywood & Partners, vets in Anyards Road area of Cobham that I did not know about  - just happened to be passing by in the car doing a short cut to Garsons. They confirm that they always check chips on new dogs in, which is encouraging.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well the "Downside 3" are back in the loop again!  Walked over by Garsons yesterday but of course no sightings of our elusive hound.  Had someone come up to me and ask if Piper was the missing one, were as disappointed as I was that I didn't have Hugo with me!  My mum lives in Whiteley Village so will walk through the woods there on Friday as the private land at Whiteley stretches quite a way back towards Hersham.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Made a quick dash to the woods between Black Pond and Garsons Farm,  gave out huge number of posters and the few fliers I had left. People so nice and so excited to think he is around the area still. Several said they'd put a poster in their car as well. After two hours, walking and accosting people ! I'd hoped to go into Garsons Farm and around West End village but just didn't have time. I do think Garsons is important. Hugo is almost certainly crossing their fields. If anyone can get there and see if they'd give out some fliers to staff ? put poster in staff room or whatever they have. They are working over such a vast area. p.y.o will be starting before too long. What about an e mail to them or send them some fliers if no one can get there ? They are usually very helpful. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Caught up with MJ and discussed good places to poster around Hersham - Just got back -  dropped off  posters off at 7 Hills Garden Centre and Pets Corner both v helpful (Garden Centre also asked about Winston!), asked Waitrose sympathetic but couldn't help, put up a poster on the triangle green bit opposite the Gallery? also asked Pampered Pets? (dog parlour near the roundabout) Surrey Equine and Dog Centre? Lyon Road, and lastly I put up a poster on a telegraph pole on the corner of  Thrups Lane and Molesey Road. I sadly realise beyond this I am unlikely to be able to help for a while - but will keep my eyes peeled to the website - willing Hugo to be re-united with Adriana and family and to meet Luca SOOON. Good Luck everyone.JoLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

MJ you are doing a brilliant job!  As we all know from previous experience here on DL, it is the relentless slog of posters in urban areas where people see them that often brings a dog home. It is usually the people who have already seen a poster BEFORE they see the missing dog that get him home as they can act quickly. Am out all day today, but will try to get to area of sighting tomorrow to do boring postering. PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Lastly...one last idea for the day (am already exhausted!!!) It might be an idea to register Hugo with a local vet. If someone or us catches him he will have to be rushed to a vet I would assume??? If you want to call my vet in Hersham (open 24hours) and see what they say. They have a poster of him in waiting room.Hersham Beech House 01932220768.Voila!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As I live in the area I am going to stick posters (old amended ones) on my car's doors and boot so that people can see them from all angles....and this time I won't mind if I sit in traffic jams...it will give people plenty of time to read them!!! We could also put fliers door to door to get to more people????All from me!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This road is located just before Hersham village not far from main road from Esher and West End and close to the Hersham Riverside Park where I had postered a while back. Did the lady say what direction he went. Could you ask all callers that question as it might help?? Gave fliers to very helpfull people with or without dogs. They still refer to the other posters around the green so that's great! I also think that fliers are very good and people keep them. Posters could be added to the Waitrose and other businesses around and in the gallery in Hersham. I won't have time today so if someone has a mo. Could we also ask people if they can take a pic with mobile if they have the time and reflex and if not too close that it might spook him more...but a pics would be nice to identify him 100% ish!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes please do send me some of the new batch. I think fliers are particularly good as posters don't seem to stay around very long ! If anyone is in the Garsons Farm area it would be a good idea to try and talk to somebody there about giving posters/fliers to their employees who work in the fields that stretch from Esher to Hersham direction, it would seem he would probably be going right across that land . Don't know if anyone has done so ? I saw Hugos poster on the notice board by the tills about a week ago, but it would be good to update it with something in big red letters like 'SEEN IN THIS AREA REGULARLY, LAST SIGHTING APRIL 18th' what do you think ? I have a 'poorly visitor' so am finding it difficult to go out and about for too long, having to walk dogs locally  and with great speed !. Not sure if I'm going to be able to go a bit further today, certainly will if I can.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Burning the midnight oil again...but have redone posters with 'Have you seen Hugo?' and other tweaks and emailed to team. Please give feedback if you feel it can be improved. Will print and post to MJ and anyone else who needs fliers or posters. Jan, shall I send you some too? I thought I was going to have heaps of time this week, but of course my work schedule is variable and has most inconveniently hotted up again just when the Hugo hunt does too...so am stuck in London then away in Norfolk fri-sun. Will not have internet over the weekend, but mobile works sometimes, at least for voicemail--which I will check regularly for good news! Come on Hugo! Time to come home!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Another sighting!!! Hugo was seen, 99% confident, Sat at 5 pm in Hersham on Chrupps Avenue, appearing sort of friendly but too nervous to come nearer. Seen by a woman who lives there. She just saw the poster today while on school run so rang me as quickly as poss, at 15:00 today, tue.  He had a collar on, but she wasn't sure if tail long or docked.  Maybe he's trying to turn himself in?!?! I left a message for Paula, and spoke to PiperPup who will go for walkies around there tomorrow. Spoke to MJ also who go there on her way home, and will reach other team members.  Of course this happens when I'm at work! Paula, you may be called on to live in your Hugo skirt, starting tomorrow, Wednesday! Luca is with us for keeps.  I wonder if bringing him home isn't a bit like lighting a cigarette while waiting for a bus--the bus always turns up just at that moment.  Hope so!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy:
Did a long walk with one of my dogs Sunday evening from Sandy Lane Car park over to Blackpond. Sat by the pond at dusk, just watching. Plenty of cover here for a dog to hide and plenty of ducks to eat, but the rest of Esher Common so bare after the recent tree felling I doubt a dog would hang a round much. Plenty of cover nearer to Sandy Lane though. Met two local families out dog walking:  one couple with a labrador who live in Copsem Lane backing on to Esher Common, the other with a B/W English pointer, also from Copsem Lane and who also walk regularly. All took posers to keep in pockets/give to neighbours who have dogs. Both families already aware of Hugo and know the area v.
well. New posters sound good Adriana  -  suggest you say Oxshott HEATH (not woods) as that's what it is called and Esher COMMON. Saw recent posters in car park. Added new poster in Fairmile Car Park at the top of Sandy Lane near Black Pond. (Luca sounds interesting . . . . .
permanent addition or foster? ). PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Two beautiful days of sunshine made searching for Hugo feel like a walk in the park! Saturday I brought my friend Ros with Hugo's best friend, Milly the lurcher, and Luca, a calm and loving 3 yr old rescue GSP from Ireland that came to live with me this week, along with my two children and 4 other under-5s and walked with MJ and her lovely Margaux and Audrey without dogs round behind Sandy Lane car parks.  A merry gang making lots of happy noises, I hoped the combination would entice Hugo.  But nothing seen. Left scent and some food in likely looking spots. Today tried the quieter approach and walked with Luca, Paula, MJ and Margaux.  We spent a few hours and covered a lot of ground from the Sandy Lane car parks, to the monument, sand pit, black pond and back round again.  Again leaving scent and food. Spoke to lots of walkers, gave out posters to those few who didn't already have one. More evidence of the thoroughness of Team Hugo.  In fact one lady saw my Luca and said, 'Oh, I thought we'd just found Hugo!' and it turned out that she didn't know me, Paula, or MJ but knoew of Hugo from posters in Molsey. How she knew his name, I'm not sure.  But it made me think more strongly about going ahead with putting Hugo's name on posters, as I do end up telling people his name when we chat and it would involve people on a more personal level and if anyone did finally succeed in getting a hold of him, he might feel more secure hearing his name--if he still knows it.  So on that note, I will put together a new poster and flier with his name and some of the excellent rewording MJ suggested.  Will email team... and will happily post printed ones if you want. Here's hoping more sightings come in soon! A xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

One of my colleagues told me that posters have already been taken down at Copsem Lane car park!!! there are still some up through the Esher woods but she could not check them all.Agree with your comments A. People might think that H is aggressive and should not be approached because of the wording....however beware that his character, or just attitude, might have changed in the past 3 months and you might not want the public to try and approach him either....How about writing "lovely shy dog" "will run away if you approach" "just call us immediately".And yes why not put his name?It might help people remember him and spread the word. How about also adding to the poster "please rangers do not take down"!!! I will be at the Sandy Lane car park (2nd car park if you drive from the A3) today after 12.....and walk between Esher woods and Oxshott. See you all!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just to say that everyone I give a flier/poster has been very nice and concerned and first question is always "whats his name ?"  I do tell them he is Hugo and try to explain the thinking behind not putting his name on. They do sometimes look a bit mystiffied as to what they are supposed to do if they can't even attempt to make gentle contact while phoning the number they have.  So personally I don't think it wouldn't hurt and it makes a better connection somehow for people to be talking about Hugo rather than 'that missing dog'. Saw his poster at Garsons farm yesterday and put some up myself but you know I can't for the life of me remember where, which is rather worrying. Another senior moment !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I agree that a humane trap would be good as soon as we are sure we know it really is Hugo and where...so we need another sighting! Wet weather is supposed to clear so maybe, with some luck, we'll see him this weekend. I'm on my own with both kids sat and sun so will come down (prob pm sat and not sure what time sun) for as long as I can, and have the kids play as loudly as they can. Car still in button down mode with Hugo's beds, treats, tins of sardines and pilchards, leads, my wellies etc. Happy to spend time and may well be able to as kids back at school tue and not many work hours for me next week. Will also get in touch with Perry. Maybe offsite you can let me know if you're around and when so we could try to hook up this weekend and/or next week.  As for the sightings, I will need to find out what time at Black Pond, all I kjnow was that it was 'morning', though I was encouraged by the fact that the skinny dog freely approached the two pointers. So maybe pointers are a good lure (but shepherds, esp. Audrey's, not good!) The sandpit sighting was at noon. Important note about posters: a police officer from Cobham, who happens to have 3 GSPs--I really must try to track her down to eliminate hers from any poss sightings, if you know her please let me know--told a lady I met yestereday that when she saw our posters she immediately interpreted 'shy and frightened, do not approach' as meaning that Hugo was actually dangerous but we didn't want to write that.  God, nothing could be further from the truth!  Her suggestion was that we take those words off.  I think this is a good suggestion.  Also, I wonder if a total facelift of the posters would register better.  Maybe even something like: HELP FIND HUGO in big red letters now...? Is there any point left in keeping his name a secret? I'm not sure it would do any harm.  At this point, 3 months down the line, how much worse could it be for him to hear a stranger call his name.  Especially considering that the most likely candidate to spot him will be someone out with their dogs, therefore someone who would be understanding.  Please weigh in on this, either here or offline, as I am very interested to hear your thoughts.  I will print and bring down a load of posters and flyers with a new look in any case, and can email, post, or deliver to you etc. Lastly, I love discovering there are secret Hugo supporters following our quest without posting!  Thank you for letting me know you're there!! Message from Patsy:
Yes, totally agree with MJ  -  if this is Hugo, he is unlikely to come to any of us. Adriana, it is important that you make time to come to the area to scent in areas of sightings, leave bedding smelling of home with one of us for any future sightings, maybe leave bedding in a sheltered spot near area of sighting etc. Please find out if here is a certain time of day when these sightings took place and let us know on here to see if a pattern starts to emerge. Also details of exact bit of Blackpond if poss. We have FOUR missing dogs in our area at the moment, so DL volunteer helpers are stretched to the limit, so it is important for owners to put in as much time as they can please.
Anyway, it would be lovely to see you again . . .  Am around all weekend, but cannot do much today I'm afraid. PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked from Copsem Lane towards Black Pond via both bridges going over to Oxshott. Saw all new posters and gave out more....One thought though: after 3 months Hugo is still not happy going towards strangers, although probably desperate, still not ready to surrender except to his "mum" and "siblings" probably....So if we did see him, us volunteers, we would have little chance to catch him I think. It would be great if Adriana and the children could spend some time there as often as possible and may be set up camp on a car park between Black Pond and Oxshott (Sandy Lane?). Hearing the children play might attract him....I know easier said than done... Would the use of a megaphone to call him help? Would he recognise Adriana's voice or the children's then? Reed's School near Oxshott Heath should also be emailed.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I took a poster in to Claremont Gardens when we had the possible sighting in the car park just across the road (and along a bit from there) They were very nice and put it in entrance kiosk. But they may well assume he is found by now so it would be worth updating them if anyone is in the area. Also suggested to Adriana at that time that she contact the Claremont School and I am pretty sure she did. There again a reminder would be good, with these recent possible sightings. By the way Patsy I was very careful not to poster on trees, so hopefully won't have upset anyone. Which reminds me one man I met near Black Pond this morning, and gave flier to, said "oh one minute there were posters everywhere and then they all disappeared so we assumed he was found".Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jo and I did a somewhat damp walk all around the Black Pond area this afternoon - sadly no sighting. Jo accosted every dog walker we met - we found them all very sympathetic and caring, and most already knew of Hugo.  One or two had already seen Jan's up-dated posters. We put up a few more posters, including one (and one of Lewie also) at the little car park on the A307 Esher road near Blackhills where dog walkers park regularly. Sadly time did not allow us to walk right over to the Copsem Lane area.  Hope to hear some good news soon -----Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My sister and I walked all round the Black Pond area this morning. Put up some more posters (suitably amended with possible recent sighting) ang gave out all the fliers and most of the posters you gave me yesterday Patsy.  Put posters near the  bridges that cross to Oxshott and spoke to loads of people all very helpful and now armed with details should they spot him. Re: the Chessington W of A suggestion. Be difficult to take a poster in unless you were going there, 'cos it's such a busy road, you couldn't stop, you'd have to queue to get into the car park with the rest of the world, then turn round and come out. Maybe Adriana your children fancy a day out there ? Then you could ask them to put posters around near the entrance where you actually go in and once inside around as many places as possible.  Although probably most people that go there come from some way away.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, I met Jan at Oxshott Heath sandpit yesterday and walked with her and alone beforehand. Gave out lots of flyers and posters (and gave spare ones to Jan for future use). Met Oxshott Heath ranger who lives in the cottages by station and looks after heath. She is aware of Hugo, has poster in her house and also herself rides on Chatley Heath.
She confirms that there are quite a few GSPs in the area, but of course will keep a look out. Blackpond sighting sounds promising . . .
far too early for a trap until we know it is him and we can establish a reliable feeding station (we have access to a local trap, but it would have to be in a quiet place and monitored 24hrs a day, peferably by owner, or very reliable and knowledgeable local person). Sorry, am working today, but can come out in evening if any more sightings. PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No luck from me either. Spoke to people having picnics, playing with noisy remote controlled 4x4 next to the sand pit...nothing. Gave out more posters too. A couple still had theirs in their pocket and promptly showed it to me! Nice people!!!Then went for a drive covering all exits around Oxshott.....The Sandpit is right by the car park on the road from Oxshott village to the A3...very bumpy car park. On the other side of the bump is the sandpit...There were a lot of children so may be that is what attracts him??? The other sighting near black pond sounds very promising and the description could fit!!! oh my God!!!Will make an appearance there today too..Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

haines GSP i am so hoping this is your boy..... everything points to the fact it has to be him doesn't it!!!. can you get a humane trap up there into the area he was seen??... if he is hiding out there then some easy food would surely tempt him inside.......... overcooked sausages are the best as they hang on the hook well and need a good tug to get them off.......and down comes the door behind him.if you do manage to set a trap it must be checked regularly.....and position in a tucked away place so it feels safe to him. i wish you so much luck today xxxxxxx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I tried very hard not to get too excited when I heard from lovely Alison (who rang me within 15 minutes of sighting!!!) and just went into our well rehearsed military maneauvers to get the alarm out and troops on the ground. Beautiful to see how well our team works! Thank you thank you for your speedy action. And so I waited for another sighting... Then I had a brainwave: I called two ladies who between them own 3 GSPs in the Esher/Blackhills area (not inclu PiperPup) hopefully to eliminate their dogs from the sighting and I can very happily report it was none of theirs! It gets better: One of these ladies, with her 2 GSPs, saw a loose pointer near Black Pond yesterday morning who came up near to her dogs but scarpered when she approached him.  She had a spare lead and tried to find him in the woods, but he had disappeared. This dog had his tail, and a dark collar, and was very thin and malnourished.  He was very dark in colour, possibly even black and white ticked.  But Hugo's liver colour is so very dark, plus 3 months of grime, could quite easily be looking like that. Could this be two possible sightings in one day?!?! I can't wait to see what today brings...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dashed to Oxshott when Paula phoned me. Walked round for some time gave everyone I saw a poster and asked 'the' question ! But nobody had seen him. Met up with Patsy and we walked together for a while still giving everyone we saw his details. Sorry I haven't posted before came home to find  I had visitors (still here !) At one side of the sand pit there is a large puddle/small pond where there is always water, so it coud be if he is living in the area that he comes there for a drink/bit of a bath. Anyway people are updated that he may be in the vicinity. One person I met had seen his poster at Wisley and said "everyone I know is looking out for him" ! So thats good. Will attempt to walk around that area tomorrow. Unfortunately between my house and the ten minute drive to Oxshot is Chessington World of Adventures, which during school holidays turns my journey to Oxshott into a very slow and time consuming expedition ! Freda, don't know which direction you are coming from. If it's the A3/Esher direction driving straight towards Leatherhead (Tesco) the sand pit car park is on the right just after Sandy Lane and before the Station car park. Coming the other way it's obviously on the left just past the station car park. Sorry this is so rushed. Disappointed to hear you aren't very good all the time Paula.......... Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm sorry to hear that Hugo has still not been found.  I know that you said you had had bad experiences with psychics in the past, but have you tried Marta Williams (http://www.martawilliams.com/)?  She is not a psychic but calls herself an animal communicator.  She is based in the states but has a very good record of finding lost animals judging by the feedback on her website and the case studies in one of her books that I have just read.  I have no idea what her fees would be, but she does take cases outside America - she might be worth a try? Good luck with the search, we have been going to Wisley Common and the surrounding areas whenever we can to see if we can spot him tooLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A while ago there was a border terrier called Digby that went missing . His owner, like you, was devastated and dedicated to doing everything possible to find him. We postered and postered for months and Amanda (owner) contacted an animal psychic. They told her he was living by water and we all scoured the woods around a local lake, then told us more stuff that sent us off looking somewhere else.  After a while this person told Amanda that Digby couldn't wait for her any longer and he was dead. As you can imagine she was terrribly, terribly upset, particularly at the thought that she'd let him down. Some time later she got a call from someone who'd seen a poster and said that their neighbour had recently 'acquired' a dog answering his description. She went to the house and  'reclaimed him' fortunately he was chipped so there could be no dispute.  Alive and well, bless him ! and now happily back home. This is not to say that there may not be genuine psychics out there, but this is my only experience of one 'helping' with a missing dog......... Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes it is really wonderful news about Isaac & when I read that I thought it must be your turn next for some good news.  It might be a tiny consolation if you knew that he was safe & well somewhere but I can understand the heartbreak you must be going through without him.  Hope you get a newspaper spread - maybe, just maybe, some more publicity will get to someone?s conscience.  Just wish I was a bit nearer to be some practical help.  No-one seems to have responded to my question about a ?Dog Communicator? ? probably just think I?m a bit ?cranky? ? so I?ve no idea if one could help find Hugo.  I just know I?d explore every possible avenue. Oh merde! I'd put such a long message on too.  But did it from hubby's mac--I guess that's the problem with Macs. Will try to remember what I wrote... Thank you all for renewing posters and replacing missing ones.  It's 12 weeks tomorrow and I suppose lots of people will assume Hugo's been found or that we've given up--so I am grateful, as always, that you are all helping keep the world aware that we have NOT given up looking for him and hoping to see him soon! I'll be seeing my friend's hubby who writes for national Guardian on Wed, so will hopefully come away with good advice and contact there. I fear someone's taken him in. He's such a lovely and lovalbe dog I wouldn't be surprised if he is making someone else's home very happy. Plus I'm so unconfident that the last 2 sightings were Hugo, it feels it's been over a month now since we've had a really well confirmed sighting. I just hope that with all our continued efforts that if someone does have him they will take him to a vet or to a dog warden to have him scanned.  He's such a sweetie I'm sure it would be hard to let him go.  BUT IF ANYONE HAS GOT OUR BOY, PLEASE KNOW HIS FAMILY IS UTTERLY DEVASTATED WITHOUT HIM AND HIS LITTLE GIRL AND LITTLE BOY, AND ESP HIS MUM, HAVE BEEN IN TEARS MANY A DAY AND JUST WANT HIM BACK SAFE. NO QUESTIONS ASKED AND A GENEROUS REWARD AWAITS THE GOOD SOUL WHO HELPS US!!! I will be down Cobham way on Wed or Thu this week to visit PiperPup and plan to do a bit of postering as well of course.  Can bring a fresh supply for anyone who needs.  Just let me know and I will get printing...  All the very best to you all for Easter. We'll be up in York from Good Friday to the 16th but will be in radio contact and I would of course drop everything and drive down in a flash if Hugo shows up! God I miss him!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi A and Team Hugo, just got back from renewing some posters at Chatley Heath - it seemed to me sadly a lot (not all) of Hugo's posters had been taken down/ or blown down.  Renewed one in each car park area and a few on the 'central' paths and one at the Semaphore Tower. A are you going to e mail Team Hugo if  Hugo is included in a Nationa Paper? - if so I would like to get a copy! MBW to A and all Team Hugo - JoLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Been getting messages from friends/contacts of my friend in Spain who have received Hugos details from her. They are around the Esher/Weston/Thames Ditton area and are passing the word round and alerting everyone they can think of, they have my number for contact as I'm near and I of course have 'The Team Sheet' !  Have asked them particularly to make sure they tell their vets in case there are any vets we've missed. Can't help thinking he may be cosying up and pampered in someones home while we all trudge round looking for him ! And as we know not all vets automatically scan..........Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi A - Hope the National Paper coverage works out - I've still got my fingers crossed!  Jan I will go up to Chatley Heath (Semaphore Tower) and renew some of the old posters. Thank you amber paws for needed reassurance! Jan, your posters will be in the post tomorrow. It's page 3 again, Paula, maybe this time...? Have emailed Guardian, still waiting for response on Streatham Guardian. Saw a beautiful dalmatian pup as I drove the kids to school, almost caused bottle neck as I slowed to go 'awwwwwww...' Just like Hugo this time last year. Just had a brainwave--my friend's husband writes for a national paper, their financial column, but will see if he could hook me up with the right reporter to get Hugo's story run nationally.  Maybe for the 12 week mark, or even the 3 month mark... will keep you posted...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked the Oxshott side of the A3 today, posters still there at least. Didn't meet one person to give a poster to. My friend in Spain is re-sending latest poster to all friends in Esher/Thames Ditton/Weston Green area (thanks for poster Paula x) Has anyone been to the Semaphore Tower area recently, to check on and maybe update posters ? Was about  to say I would and as I'm sitting here typing had a call from family announcing visit tomorrow, oh good. What a confusing possible sighting! I tried very hard not to get too excited, and a good thing, but on the up side, it has given us a chance to remind the general public that we are still actively looking and have a recent siting to motivate all to be alert. Thank you all for your quick repsonse in informing everyone and getting to both locations!!! Also for renewing posters. It is aggravating indeed that they get taken down. I will post some posters to you Jan, small and large, will check my email to see if I have your address. The JRT story is fabulously reassuring, 6 months, as with the Shiba Inu 10 months. I SO want to get Hugo home!!!  Have taken to stopping any passing puppies for cuddles and took a friend's dog for a walk last week, just to enjoy some canine company. It's not quite the same, but good nonetheless. Please warn me if this sounds like I am losing the plot. A xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked from Oxshott thru the Sandy Lane woods across the A3 bridge right round the woods/lake the other side, is that Esher Common ? Came back across a bridge further down. Posters have all been taken down which is disappointing. Replaced in car parks, written on, sighted in this area March 26th. Thinking it's possibly better to hand out as many posters/fliers as possible to actual dog walkers as you meet them. Most dog owners are nice people (look at us !) and realise how awful this is, how much they'd appreciate help themselves if in this situation and are only too pleased to hear the details and keep a look out. Also they walk (as I do) in all the various places that there have been sightings, so we are still covering the area.  Rangers seen set on bombing round in their 4 x 4 's ripping posters off the trees which makes me very cross.  Made a nuisance of myself to everyone I met today and gave them a flier, 'til I ran out then they had to have a full size poster. If you'd like to send me some of the small size A. that would be great. Meantime I will use the bigger ones so don't worry, still have details to hand to distribute whenever and wherever !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went back to my car in the station car park, then took fliers to put thru the letter boxes of the two houses on the green. When I got back to the car park I handed a man with two small dogs a flier and he said (pointing in the direction of the slopey path) lady has just given me one thanks ! So we were near each other ! As Paula has already established, my mobile which is only a pay as you go thingy, switches itself on and off at will. Yes I do know about locking the keypad, makes no difference ! I spend a few minutes every morning thinking, today I'll get another phone but it hasn't happened yet. Paula can give you my number, who knows we might actually make contact one day and she can e mail me yours if she has it. Maybe you have a better phone than me...wouldn't be hard ! As I said before don't think fliers and posters in that area will have been wasted as all these woods link up and I found a lot of people I gave fliers to had seen  posters a while ago and now assumed that he was found or that owners were no longer searching. So hopefully, it has put him to the forefront of peoples minds again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Is it poss for us all to know each other's mobile numbers? Jan we were not far from each other yesterday. I shall ignore the rude comments about my mobile Paula, I did have a 'brick mobile' and it was lovely ! A faithful friend that never let me down, this smaller thing is totally unreliable, switching itself off whenever it gets bored, clearly didn't want you to speak to me.  Enjoying the fact I was getting soaked, though I won't say in a lost cause. As far as I can see all those woods more or less join up, right  from Oxshott Heath cross Sandy Lane into more woods, thru them to bridge over the A3 to Copsem Lane (is that where the caller meant ?) Don't know if you'd call that Esher Woods ? I walked there this morning for a very long time with my dogs and my sister,  keeping eyes on alert for Hugo all the while. If you go across those woods, as the Crow flies you'd come to the woods near Garsons Farm where we had a possible sighting before. So posters in all those areas are not wasted. Replaced poster in Copsem car park, there has really been a blitz of poster removal all around the area. Hopefully the 'Possible sighting HERE March 26th' written in red may stop them taking this lot down for a while. Postered at Browns Corner, again ***** at the Station car park and gave out loads and loads of fliers. Which again isn't wasted cos people who walk at Oxshott, like me, also walk in the other wooded/commonland areas.............Trying to make you feel less guilty Paula  xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Following news of possible sighting Oxshott Woods, Jo and I have just returned from walking there!  Wish we had gone to the right place!  However, Jo put up a few more posters and we spoke to lots of dog walkers - nothing positive to report, unfortunately. Can we have specific details of place of possible sighting please?  Yes, I too read the story of the JRT which was scanned for microchip at Vets - wonderful result!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to Copsem Lane car park and walked in Esher woods yesterday. Saw that all but one poster had been taken down! Except for the old black and white that the "offenders" probably did not see all the latest ones that I had refreshed 2 weeks ago had gone and same inside the woods.I did not have any plastic folders with me so just handed out some more to walkers. If anyone has time to go there this week.....Was there supposed to be an article in the Walton/Weybridge Informer? We used to get the Guardian delivered free every week end (Hersham) but no more it seems. We only get the Informer now....There is also a monthly magazine "Dogs Today" that is being published by Pets Subjects out of Chobham. They might be interested in running the story as it is local???? I bought it for the first time this week (Waitrose).Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Disappointing that we've had no more sightings. Walked thru the woods at Sandy Lane today, just the other side of the A3 to Esher Common (never really sure what these different bits of woods are called) Handed out some fliers to several dog walkers. Took poster into Sunrise place and they put it up at reception desk in the entrance. Sorry Patsy that I chickened out of Gunters Mead (very posh retirement accomodation) ! Didn't actually know where it was and the traffic was dreadful along that stretch of rd. By the time I'd seen the entrance and weighed up the very forbidding 'Residents only' sign I'd gone past. Think they may well have been unreceptive to a Hugo poster, but perhaps I do them an injustice. Was still blinking from the rather overpowering crystal chandeliers of the Sunrise retirement Place. Must tell my children I could never, ever live somewhere like that ! Though they were very nice people, quite interested and concerned for poor Hugo.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have been out of 'our' area for a few days, so haven't managed to get to the Sunshine place (retirement apartments) or the other place Patsy mentioned but will hope to do so tomorrow. Did poster and hand out some fliers to dog walkers in Nonsuch Park this morning. Few days ago spoke  to the young (ish) chap that looks after Oxshott Heath. As he's working in there nearly everyday I mentioned the recent possible sighting and asked him to keep a look out. He said he hadn't read any of the posters as he doesn't like dogs, only likes snakes. Pointed out (thru gritted teeth) that with the reward money he could buy another snake, hopefully that registered ! Though on the plus side he is so disinterested he doesn't take the posters down.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

In response to Stephs post - we all know that under no circumstances should the dog that attacked Hugo be anywhere near a sighting as this would very likely make him run - he is already frightened enough and I know if I was in his position I would run if I could smell THAT dog - dont think stephs post was meant to be as general as "every dog"Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Adriana, just thought that you and everybody else involved in the "Hugo" hunt would be glad to know that the GSP which Arthur spotted in Battersea Dogs Home was claimed. Patsy, in answer to your question about the cyclist, I'm slightly embarassed to say that in my excitement to field the call I hadn't realized his number was 'withheld' so I haven't been able to ring him back to clarify location.  I usually keep everyone's number to be able to spread the good news when it finally comes. Here's hoping it won't be too long! Thinking we should amend the posters again to keep them current even though no real sure sighting. They could read at the top: STILL MISSING AS OF 19 MARCH Will print and post to anyone who needs more, just email or text me. Many thanks!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My earlier post was really only advise that we felt might be of some use in the search for Hugo. In no way was it meant to prevent people exercising their dogs in the area.More to just warn that perhaps having too many dogs gathering at once at a potential  sighting spot could keep Hugo from appearing. No offence or unwelcome interference was meant here.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy:
So sorry we have had no more definite news on Hugo. Have been walking one of my dogs in area of latest alleged sighting these last few days (sorry Aunt Steph:  am NOT going on a non-dog, dog-walk!  We are all dog owners and have to exercise our own animals! If there really is a definite sighting, then of course I'll leave my dogs at home).
On re-reading your last post Adriana, am still not clear. Did the cyclist mention BIRCHWOOD LANE? Or did you just assume it was this track? Please advise so we know where to look out for him. No Jan, have not done Sunrise place. Can you? Maybe also Gunter's Mead, which is opposite in Copsem Lane (smart retirement homes, backing on to the Arbrook Farm/Copsem Farm fields). Am in London today, so will try to poster in more urban south London areas on the way home. Is Hugo's article in Streatham & Elmbridge Guardian and Surrey Comet this week? Px

Hi Jan, the cyclist was fairly clear in his description of the dog he saw, which is what was so exciting, but really unclear about location. He'd said something about ploughed fields and the lane under the A3, which is why Paula and I started at Arbrook farm by Birchwood Ln but ended up looking down Old Common Rd which also passes under the A3, running past the golf course towards the Old Portsmouth Rd near to Blackhills. I haven't been able to reach him for clarification.  So I'm about as confused as he is about where this was. Unhelpful, I know. Thank you Stef and Jayne for the tip about not bringing along dogs to search areas of sightings, I very nearly brought out Hugo's best dog friend Milly, a placid lurcher, but changed my mind last minute.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unexpected visitors meant that I wasn't able to join the search today. Will aim to walk around Esher Common/Oxshott area tomorrow and take fliers (Patsy gave me last week) which I'll write the updated sighting on. Is there any more specific detail on where he was possibly seen ? Which direction he was heading in ? Did anyone take posters into the 'Sunshine' retirement place ? Don't want to annoy them by trotting in there again if they've already been asked.  He's got some really nice weather for his wanderings anyway.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It was a beautiful day in Surrey today. I traipsed about for hours with no joy. Just Paula and I, no dogs with us, and we kept quite quiet. Still nothing.  There are just so many miles of possibility. We really need another sighting. I will follow up with the papers and hope the story prints in all three this week. And so I guess we stick to the basics of poster poster poster... Refresh wherever they are soggy... and keep positive...  The sunshine helps! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You are all doing such a great job.I'm just sorry that Hugo hasn't been caught yet. Just a little word of caution. When a dog has been spooked by anything, particularly another dog it is really inadvisable to take any other dogs along to the search.  If the dog in question has been frightened in any way by another dog & can see, hear or more importantly, smell ,other dogs on the search then it will just lie low & not come out .Even too many people can actually jeopardise the chances of the dog immerging. An example of this was demonstrated with the return of a Springer Spaniel not long ago near Luton. So many well meaning people wanted to help his owner but in the end , once she went out on her own & called, the dog came running out from the undergrowth to her. Good luck & fingers crossed there is another sighting soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unfortunately can't get out until later today but will head that way asap. Thinking of the 'Sunrise' retirement apartments, big complex on the corner where the Oxshott Rd joins the A3 roundabout. Good to take some posters in there, think they'd have a reception area and a lounge, dining room where they, hopefully, would put up a poster. Everything crossed xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just seen this. Unfortunately can't get out today, desperately sorry. Will hope to tomorrow. Have looked in my Surrey map book and can't find a Birchwood Lane near the A3 ? Can anyone give more detail of where this is ? Maybe e mail me if you don't want it on site. Paula and Adriana have my address.  Please let this be what we've all been waiting for xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

POSSIBLE SIGHTING: A cyclist thinks he saw Hugo limping slowly across farmland (no crops on it) bordering Birchwood Lane near where it passes under the A3. He was rather vague about the exact location, but this seems highly plausible.  Since on open farmland, little chance it was GSP belonging to another dog owner. PiperPup getting in touch with Duncan of Arbrook Farm and Perry getting in touch with farmer from other side of road to try to gain access to searching their land. I will drive out tomorrow morning, meeting Paula 10.30 ish. Anyone in area today? Tomorrow? Hugo, please stay put, and send up a flare or something!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Absoluely flipping marvellous !!!!!!!   I took posters into pet shops in Stoneleigh and Ewell today, they were the last of the slightly older ones I'd already printed (no name) So I wrote across them that recent sightings suggest he is trying to find his way home. Hope that gets people who may not feel they are 'in the right area' on the lookout. If you could send me some posters Adriana that would be brilliant, I think you have my address but I'll e mail it again just in case. Seen several 'soggies' today that need replacing and if I find out who keeps removing the ones I put (keep putting) at Browns Corner, Oxshott I just hope I don't have my little hammer in my hand !!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I just spoke to Matthew Knowles who is currently covering Croydon and he is passing my email on to the editors that cover both Kingston area and Streatham area--as we hadn't quite disconnected I overheard him saying, 'I have a story for you...' to his colleague. However we had disconnected before I had the chance to get the appropriate editors names.  Will follow up again later. Also got a call from a chap who'd seen a sign in Claygate for a found dark brown dog.  Carole followed up to find it's a choc lab bitch. Hope she's home soon too.  Thank you Carole and Simon!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello all, so good to find that you are all there and still thinking, searching, and breathing Hugo, even though he's on pg 6!!! I find that especially comforting as he's on my mind just as contantly now as he used to be constantly at my side. I will contact old and new places via late night emails this week and post here what I do.  Jo, do you mean the Semaphore tower house? I didn't manage to speak with them directly myself. I think a general guide is if we can't remember, and any notes pertaining to contacts made are as far as 10+ pages back, it would be well worth making that contact again. So go for it, and thank you!
If one of us doesn't find him, I hope Hugo is lucky enough to get picked up and taken to Battersea. The eyes and ears and speedy grapevine are truly impressive. Thank you Sue and Arthur! Hope the other (intact) GSP finds his family soon too.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just thinking of the sighting off the Scilly Isles roundabout and nothing since......It would be a good idea Adriana to remind the various inhabitants of Sandown Park Racecourse, which is very nearby, that Hugo is still on the run. There is a lot that goes on there, golf range, ski slope, go karts (not likely he'll go near them maybe) besides the stables and eating places. It's a big area of green space in an otherwise fairly built up area. Hope you're feeling better xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Yes I agree with both MJ and Piper Pup - I am always on the look out for Hugo! Yesterday Alan (my husband) and I went up to Chatley Heath with our dogs and walked over the other side of the A3 (Wisley Common?) and saw the Birchmere Scout Hut a lot of activity there - we saw some Hugo posters nearby - but has anyone contacted the Scout Hut? If not I am very happy to do so.  - I tried to check the DL website to see if anyone had but could only get to post notes from 1 - 10 not 11 - 18.  We 'discovered' yesterday the footbridge over the M25 and going again sometime today to investigate a bit more - it did look quite a large area and great as everyone has said before for catching rabbits etc. Hope Adriana you are feeling better? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Yes, good to keep searching Chatley Heath/Ockham area as we have no proof that any of these more recent sightings are in fact him. I've emailed DL Admin today asking Jayne to put Hugo in DL column in Countryman's Weekly. If he has been picked up and possibly sold on, someone may come forward. Woody the whippet stolen from Kent came back
via Countryman's Weekly yesterday.   Adriana:  do please make sure you
have emailed all gundog websites all over the country. I presume Hugo's breeder has/can do this for you.  Also agility websites if not already done. Please don't stop pestering people. All we can do is poster locally  -  you can do more on email from home. Also poster in South London at petshops/vets etc. It all helps.  Paula has given me
another huge supply of posters   -  so I'll get out over the weekend.

I walked at the semaphore tower today, just got a feeling he may come back there. Replaced a couple of soggy posters. It seems odd that if he is in the more built up areas of Thames Ditton and Weston Green that nobody has seen him. Can't help thinking he may come back to the more rural countryside, plenty of ducks and rabbits to catch. Hope you can get some local press to take up the story there is such an area of 'possibility'.  Went to table sale 'thingy' at Cobham. Nice ladies there,  some  raising funds for greyhound trust, amazing how many things you don't need you buy when it's a good cause ! They had heard about 'him' but now have posters to hand, latest info. and are promising to pass word around and be very much on the look out .  Replaced poster at Browns corner (Oxshot Heath) on my way back.         Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Was going to say I can only write the sort of letter that I'd write in similar circumstances, but actually in your circumstances I'd have fallen to bits weeks ago and been incapable of doing anything constructive !  Paula can you send me Adrianas e mail so I can send her my feeble attempts at a letter when I've composed something. Please don't let that stop anyone else who can make it all sound interesting, heart wrenching and desperate (all at once) writing something.  I imagine the internet is the best place to find out about local papers ?  It was the Epsom Guardian that printed the super letter + picture for the missing lab, only wish I'd kept it. I think the Guardian are pretty big in local papers so probably have editions around the areas we want to cover. x   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jan, I think you're right, it will be 8 weeks on Monday and we should prepare something now so that if we have no luck this weekend it's a good time to ask papers to do a story.  Could you draft something, or even just outline what you think should go in? This would be such a huge help because otherwise I spend hours staring at a blank page/screen wondering what's most appropriate, what's most effective... Also, with his journey now 7-10 miles north of where he started, any guidance as to what the local papers are would be a big help to. And if anyone else is itching to put on a jounalist hat and write a press release or letter-to-the-editor please let me know... I can always play editor and fill any factual gaps, provide photos etc. Many thanks! A xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Apologies for not being much help last few days, not been able to drive as ankle the size of a football. Now it's all colours of the rainbow but less swollen, hope to get out and about today.  My posters won't be the latest set but the message is still the same isn't it. May write something on them if needed. Friend in Spain still hassling for support from friends and ex neighbours all around Weston/Esher/Thames Ditton area.  Any chance of local papers in this area reporting this 'Incredible Journey' type story ? Or (as I've said before) when Henry went missing locally to me owner sent superb letter, with picture, to letter page and they printed it. Hugos story is even more interesting (and far more involved !) is our little chap trying to make it home ? Could build it into quite a story............Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Great to hear we have another person on board spreading the word--Lyn from Bl Cross! I think Hugo's posters have become synonymous with DogLost--a testament to how well we've postered, let's keep it up--I received another call today from a chap who'd found a black staffy-type dog in Oxshott Heath and wanted to report it to DL...I gave him DL number and hope that that dog is safely home now, like yesterday's GSP! Patsy has been very busy!! Message from Patsy: Continued postering today (Monday) from where I left off yesterday as
follows:
Chessington at Barwell Lane/Barwell Court Farm stables  -  various different livery yards in this area, all have posters now. O'Meira vets at Chessington, outside Lovelace Primary School, Clayton road
area and then on over new A3 to Woodstock Lane South at Claygate.
Postered bridleways, outside stables, in tackrooms at Chessington Equestrian Centre and Old Barn Stables. Then under the old A3 and gave last poster to rose nursery at Woodstock Lane North. Also gave posters/ flyers to any dogwalkers I met.  Everyone today again so helpful and all horsey people very sympathetic and knowledgeable and would all know what to do if a frightened dog on the run ended up in their yard.  Old Barn stables have my number too just in case . . .  I have now run out of posters (more please Paula if poss!) but can get out again on Wednesday to do a bit more. Busy tomorrow.  Next stage is I think Woodstock Lane North area which is called Long Ditton and links up with area of 19 Feb sighting. If you are driving from Hook roundabout to Oxshott roundabout on A3 you will see lots of horse fields each side  -  most bridleways, stables and footpaths in this area are now postered, including the paths over and under A3  -  so easy for a dog on the run to cross the main road via these tracks which makes the area we are trying to search huge. I anyone has time, I think Claygate village could do with more posters by the shops and railway station.  Am sending you an email Adriana and DL helpers with more info re today's postering. Px Forgot to add:  a man at Barwell Court Stables told me he saw a brown
dog running though the traffic near pond by Scilly Isles roundabout
same week of latest 19 Feb sighting. He thought it was smaller than a GSP, but was not sure  -  this certainly ties up with the dog at Weston Green . . . . . Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Postered on Sunday as follows:  Princes Coverts (all main bridlepath entrances now postered), Malden Rushett  - outside and inside Star pub, Byhurst Farm horse feed place, Malden Rushett cross roads area and entrances to woods towards Claygate, Stokesheath road/Stokesheath Cottages towards Arbrook Common. Then drove round to Claygate and postered Arbrook Common back towards Oxshott at Arbrook Farm etc.
Bridlepaths go under A3 linking all areas postered today. Met many dog walkers and riders who all took posters to take back home/display in tack rooms at livery yards. Postered in Claygate Common and area up by Ruxley Towers. Met v. helpful girl called Alison walking her GSP. She works for Blue Cross at Wimbledon and took posters and promised to spread the word with her contacts. Will aim to continue tomorrow in Woodstock Lane area. Jo and I set out together this afternoon, rather later than planned, but postered Chessington Sports and Social Club (in clubhouse), main car park Oxshott village - good to see so many other posters already in evidence in this area - replaced a damaged one by Social Club.  The Plough pub at Stoke d'Abernon happy to display poster in bar. Postered approach to Cobham station, Mark Oak NT car park on Bookham Common (short way from Yehudi Menuhin School).  I  do wonder now if all the rescue kennels (eg Battersea) should be checked out again, Adriana? I have also been following on DL website progress of Monty, Bearded Collie, SW area (16475).  Like Hugo, he was spooked.  Interesting to note that after no sightings for 3 weeks there have now been three.  Owners have also contacted The Pet Forums - I have no knowledge of this - worth following up?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry not have been much in evidence for a few days, having at last got my car back I've had to go many miles from 'our area' unless Hugo is now touring around Petworth, Sussex ? Nothing would surprise us with this lad.  This evening I've managed to trip up the back door step from the garden (totally sober) and my ankle is swelling  rapidly and complete agony, so plans for tomorrow are a bit 'iffy' ! Hello! I postered yesterday pm around Thames Ditton and Long Ditton recreation ground. Loads of activity there and loads of people with kids and dogs (the weather must have helped!!). People very helpful as usual! Not easy to poster in Thames Ditton....nowhere to park and so narrow!!! Met a man by Hampton Bridge the day before and he already knew about H as he had been drinking in the West End pub the day before.....I like it!!! I think his next move is/has already happening/ed and he might now be in an area where there are no posters or not enough.....If we could pursue the postering in Thames Ditton, Long Ditton, the Tow Path between Hampton and Kingston, Esher, Claygate,  and put some posters up in Surbiton (I don't know much the area but went for a drive yesterday...very built up....) by the recreational grounds and the Hogmill river walk...then even in Chessington to try and be ahead of him... Hello All! Have been doing my little bit too yesterday pm and day before! Postering from Hampton Bridge to the Scilly Isles via Thames Ditton. Thames Ditton very congested and narrow. Better when 2 people in car, one driving and the other postering. Handing out to people with or without dogs. There is a park "Weston Park" behind the green and that seems to follow the railway...might be worth walking there although not easy to park anywhere. Have postered at some entrances to this park. There is also the tow path from Hampton Bridge to Kingston.....I will try to poster there. trying to finish early on Friday to do more postering as might not be avail at week end, not Sunday anyway....Have also updated the poster at Ditton Reach vet but not Hinchley wood....There is also Telegraph Hill in Claygate that could do with postering....I have seen another poster for another lost dog in Claygate and yesterday in Weston Green/Thames Ditton. A little white jack russell.....not registered on DL? may be they have joined up forces??!!!  :-)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I agree we need to keep postering and spreading the word and trying to get ahead of H in all directions, while keeping live the old areas in case he loops back. No small task. New poster at 1/2 size looks super, thank you.  Patsy, I'd be happy to post some posters to you, just need address. With work full-on I'm afraid the earliest I could get out to do some postering would be this weekend, probably with kids in tow, therefore a bit slow. But that worked for the tortoise... I do have my wellies and leads and smelly food in the boot of my car for whenever I need to dash.  But realise that it may be some time before we get close enough to Hugo to require that. Looking forward to it though. Will continue with the emailing and phoning effort and post what I do to avoid duplication whenever I can. As midnight rapidly approaches I'd best go get some sleep or I'll be useless to man and beast alike. Thank you for keeping me and everything going!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have sent letter and latest poster to two email addresses of Animal Rescue and Care (Kingston and Twickenham), also further letter and latest poster to Battersea Old Windsor, Fantail magazine (via Battersea), Paws magazine (via Battersea) and press, Battersea.  Do hope no-one ever needs Kingston DW in a hurry - have tried twice to get through on 'phone - listened to endless music then finally put through to Environmental Dept - girl gave me wrong email address for DW and wrong 'phone no for Kingston RSPCA. Walked our own dogs at Painshill, Cobham today - went armed with posters but one very obvious one already up by entrance from car park, also another on public footpath across fields by entrance.  Lady I spoke to re Hugo had come from Ashford Middx, so visitors from afar seeing poster as they arrive. Will pursue RSPCA and DW tomorrow (via our local DW).  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wingham Court Residential Home, Surbiton Golf Club, SHL Group Thames Ditton, Esher College, Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club, Berrylands Pet Supplies, Aspen Veterinary Surgery, Sam Robertson at Not Just Dogs. Hope someone somewhere will see Hugo again soon. Hugo are you listening - A and the DL Team need to know where you are - please let us know! Won't have a car until tomorrow and really over commited at the moment anyway, sorry. Will attempt to get to area asap. Used to have a friend in Weston Green (sadly now in Spain so of no use) There was/is a quite active resident assoc. Thames Ditton and Weston Green Residents, maybe someone more technical than me could have a look on their website and see if they could circulate some details of 'the chap'.   As Auntie Paula said Hugo, keep away from the roads !! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Went to area of latest sighting yesterday early evening (Tues) and postered as follows: around Weston Green, where it backs on to the woods of latest sighting. Went into Greyhound pub on the green, who took poster to put up  -  lots of v. helpful locals at the bar, some took posters to display, all showed great interest and sympathy and promised to keep a look out/spread the word. Met two v. nice men walking dog who also took poster. They walk their dogs in woods of latest sighting and know area v. well. Pushed poster through door of Beech House vet surgery on Weston Green. Saw NO SIGN of any posters in the area around Old Cranleighian Club etc  -  come on DL helpers/ Hugo's owner, let's get postering fast  -  get the posters up where lots of people see them. Will print off more (thank you for good updated posters Majorjet/Adriana) on Thursday and get back to area.
Yes, he could well be following the stream  -  we know this from other found dogs on DL in the past.  The main thing is POSTER, POSTER, POSTER  - we know from experience on DL that it is this that gets the dogs back home. If there is a repeated sighting in the woods, then we can put down food/do scenting etc provided we have a reliable local to monitor feeding station and that owner can come down FAST if needed.
There seems to be a very nice, kind, helpful local community at Weston Green who are willing to help.
Adriana:  if you cannot come down here to poster yourself, please can you send me a supply of posters and small flyers to give out? Will email you my address. That would help as my little home printer takes ages to print out posters  -  tomorrow will go to local Kwik Print. I know that Paula can get more posters too. Keep safe Hugo . . . HainesGSP, I've done the revised poster you sent to me on two to a page.  Quite tight getting all the info on, hope they are o.k. any problems let me know.  Could only send to 10 of the team as hotmail would not allow more than 10!!! must have changed as normally allows 50.  Good luck to the Hugo Team we are all willing for Hugo to be in the right place at the right time when you can get there and we can see him go into the BLUE.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear  A and DL Hugo Team, I just wondered whether Hugo might be following the line of the River Rythe - is it possible the last sighting at Black Hills Road area near Claremont and this new area are connected by the course of the River Rythe? - have copied over the river course just in case: Freda and I will be in touch with each other and Paula  about contacting contacts etc suggested by A and others we may think of.  Good Luck Team  The Rythe is a river in the county of Surrey, England. It is a tributary of the River Thames which it joins at Thames Ditton on the reach above Teddington Lock. The Rythe rises in the vicinity of Prince’s Coverts woodland near Oxshott and runs under the A3 road into Arbrook Common. It is joined by another stream and runs through Claygate[1] and Littleworth Common to the Scilly Isles roundabout at Esher. The river then follows the Portsmouth Road towards Thames Ditton, and runs into the River Thames near Ferry Road, forming the boundary between Kingston and Thames Ditton. Dear Everyone,
I’m back in the country and so relieved to hear we’ve had a proper sighting, I was really starting to worry. Thank you all for keeping at it in my absence. Jan, yes there was some local newpaper covereage week before last in Esher paper, and maybe Cobham too, I haven’t seen it but heard, and got a call from someone. More would be good of course, especially as he seems to be on the move.  Hugo may love the country, as do I, but he seems to know where his family pack is...up in London...but please stay safe, my boy! All offers of help are hugely welcome as I am absolutely up to my eyeballs with work all week and next--UGH! Just when the trail hots up again! Here is the list of recommended contacts from Paula. Jo and Freda if you could call/email, that would be super.  Perhaps update the letter to reflect that it is now 6 weeks today since Hugo’s been missing. --Cannons
--BMW & Honda dealerships
--Sailing Club
--Royvon Kennels, esp to rule out escapee thu lunchtime, Sandy Cottage, Portsmouth Rd, Esher, Surrey, KT10 9AW 0208 398 3366

Also any officials, like dog wardens, police, other rescue places, a reminder call to Battersea, etc., would be great too if you/anyone gets a chance.

I’ll do best I can online at night after kids in bed, but my daylight hours are all swamped.  Thank you all for your help, I would be just as lost as Hugo without you!!!

Ahh! He's now following the route that Dash took!
The good news is that the Kingston Dog Warden, police and RSPCA in that area are extremely helpful. The police recorded  plenty of reports by the public (rather than say it's not their job).
Has the Kingston DW been notified?

Royvon Dog Training, also kennels and I think cattery. www.pawswelcome.co.uk/surrey.htm   phone is 0208 398 3366. Need to let them know a.s.a.p. Just possible I spose that they had an escapee ? Further on from Blackhills - past scilly isles heading towards surbiton. Past kennels on left, under railway bridge, past old cranleigh something then there is some woodland on left - he ran out of there onto the road then back into the woodland. The lady that rang didnt see a poster until today but recognised him. She used to be a dog groomer so knows breeds and is sure it was him.  Looks like he has crossed Esher. These farmers markets at Cobham and Ripley are a  great place to spread the word. Where was the man seen feeding a spotty dog ? Don't remember hearing about that.  Has there been any local paper coverage ?  Children gazing sadly at a picture of their much missed pet usually interests the press more than 'just' a missing dog.  Will continue to walk the various areas and poster and replace as needed. Let's hope for another (more accurate) sighting very soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked all over Silvermere golf course yesterday, followed the outside perimeter right up to the stables then back. Then crossed the road to the other part of the golf course by the pylones. Added a poster on coffee shop/hut. Someone at the hut serving coffee at the week-end then during the week from Spring....Loads of wildlife there, hundreds of squirrrels and some deer.....loads to eat! I think that we should keep all the areas where H was sighted, "active", with on-going searches and postering. The info is there and needs to be kept "alive". The number of people "in the know" is amazing!!!We should also continue the extension of the area perhaps???? and decide the directions??? Did anything happen re. the skinny spotted dog being fed by a man? Might still be worth investigating???Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Still lots of interest from people at Cobham Farmers Market about Hugo.  A few took down the number and some said, yet again, how good it was that the posters were being updated so that they could still keep a look out.  Seem to speak to folk who walked at Wisley, Ripley, Oxshott, Esher and all places where he's been seen so even more eyes on the lookout now.  If there's anyone in the area who doesn't know about the boy they must have been in hibernation - top marks to all who are getting out there with their hammers!!  I've got a few days clear now so I can get back to concentrating on helping look for him - just tell me where you think I should be going and I'll be there!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for the positivety MJ ! Feel inclined to say some very rude words in frustration  !!!!!  BUT it's livened us all up and I do feel he quite likely is still in this Cobham/Silvermere/maybe Ripley vicinity. There is just so much open countryside and it is an area where many  houses have land around them the size of small parks, bunny rabbits, nice little greens with ponds (tasty ducks) Why would you want to leave to go back to London !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

All. Sorry was not able to update site earlier.....was out walking all sorts of dogs....Sadly I have to report that the sighting in Hersham Kenwood Close was not of our boy. I went to the address and saw the lady of the house who confirmed (after seeing the posters) that the dog in question is a greyhound and has been seen several times over the last few weeks and last year too. He seems to wander from a neighbouring house...This is so so so disappointing....I had started defrosting all my liver cakes planning for a siege of Kenwood Close! Never mind let's not be defeated. This means that another area is now full of posters of H and that more and more people know about him. Hopefully some concrete good news VERY SOON!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for approving my rather muddled description of Whiteley Village Liz ! Never been quite sure what was beyond that impressive entrance. Great that your Mum can spread the word, would be a nice (reasonably safe) area for Hugo to set up camp wouldn't it. Relieved that there are helpers in the area able to get out today as I'm doing my best to get there but car still feeling rather dodgy (probably going to end up being towed home if I do)  If you see a rather forlorn person standing by a clapped out red car, clutching a hammer and a pile of posters MJ it'll be me........There's another garden centre somewhere along there isn't there ? Just got back from few days away and was very excited to read latest postings!  My mum lives in Whiteley Village (v good description by the way!) and she is going to ask the shop in there to put a poster up as everyone who lives in there meets by the notice board!  Oddly enough, I was at Squires Garden Centre on the Burwood Road yesterday and there was a GSP in the back of a car, I wandered up to it to have a closer look but wasn't our boy! I'm working at Cobham Farmers Market tomorrow so will put posters up there as well.  Let's hope we're on the final stretch now and Hugo is reunited by the end of the weekend.  Have the dog wardens been advised of the latest sightings?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for the call last night Paula. I've written this latest sighting across the posters I did yesterday and will go over to the area this morning. Unfortunately I don't have as much time as I'd have liked as I have visitors expected about 1pm. Sorry to hear the Golf Club there are being so unhelpful that would have been useful. Think I can picture a cemetery and  Whiteley Village ? Is that sort of a sheltered housing type area within a quite fancy entrance, but set in lots of country type land.  Bad description I'm afraid but I'm sure if anyone lives near there they'll know where I mean !  Probably a very good place to get posters up. Let's hope this person at Hersham, that kindly reported a sighting, will see him again and put some food out. Hopefully he was passing the word round his neighbours.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ran out of posters but got a few up in the road where this dog was seen - Kingswood Drive!! Possibly 2 sightings by same person yesterday - first in the morning and then at about 8.30 last night. Person then saw poster and called A. He now has my number again as Im probably closest to get to the area if seen again tonight. He will put out food if "Hugo" seen again. Description certainly sounds like it could be our boy. Nice quiet roads and saw a few foxes so there is food around. Will print more posters tomorrow.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The warden from St Andrew's in Cobham rang me today to ask if Hugo's been found yet as he would rather like to take down the many manky (my word not his) posters around the car park and church. He was happy to keep them up when I told him Hugo was still MIA, but was even happier to know we have printed fresh posters with updated info.  As I won't be able to get down for a while, could someone nearby please replace the car park poster with a new 'MISSING, SEEN 10 FEB' poster and pop one in through the letter box for their notice board.  That would be grand!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Whilst I think it is just great that everyone is putting so much effort into finding Hugo, I do rather wonder if there is too much concentration on the Hampton Court area when in fact he might now be in a completely different area?  Oxshott common, for instance, is within easy reach of Esher common and accessible by fairly open country. Has Oxshott been postered?  And what about the opposite direction from Chatley Heath, towards Ripley where one of the previous sightings was reported?  Pointers travel at such speed!  Each day I hope and hope for news  --------  We're all with you, Adriana.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I had felt a tad discouraged when I read the sage comment about emails not always being read, but have some very encouraging news: not only did ACS poster for me, they forwarded my letter and poster to all their parents!!! Fantastic! I will be following up on the suggestions everyone posted, whenever I can squeeze a few minutes out of the day (never enough hours). Whenever my spirits sink I am buoyed by all your efforts and support. THANK YOU!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Am going to try and email posters to as many of our customers as poss. Adriana, how about you google for other professional dog walkers in the area and email them. Some of them do walk dogs belonging to Chelsea footballers who live in Esher.....One of them suggested you contact Sally Chandler. I believe that she is a dog trainer in Ripley and has a wide network of walkers/trainers in the area....more EYES to spy on our boy!!!!I will email her number to you....bye for nowLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Put up more posters at following places and handed out to walkers: Hersham riverside - 2 entrances, Hersham playground, Hersham golf course entrance (will go inside and put a few more although they have been emailed), Molesey Heath entrance (there are a few more so I will go back), Hurst Park by the Thames at 3 entrances (I will go back there too). On my list for next few days: rowing clubs by Hampton, Molesey sailing club on the reservoir, Molesey vets, Tesco next to Hurst Park, Estate Agents?, Groomers?, Bushy Park rangers, Home Farm next to Hampton court?. There are big games to hunt there so it might be very attractive to H although dangerous.Adriana I won't email any of these, but just leave posters in the area. If you want to email as well then even better!!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dont you believe it Jan - our boy is on a mission and could turn up anywhere - just wish he would turn up in one of our gardens! Adriana - as we are now in a new week a phonecall to local kennels and councils would be good again when you get a mo. With staff and shift changes happening all the time it doesnt hurt to remind them all that we are still looking for Hugo. You could back it up with another emailed poster but with a phone call they have to listen - emails sadly are often deleted without opening Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Pleased to read so many 'team members' have been on the case today. Glad you got your car 'sorted' Paula, unfortunately mine has decided it's been taken for granted for long enough and conked out on me this morning. Thankfully I managed to limp home but it's going to be local walking for me until I can get it fixed and I'm in one of the few areas in Surrey where we really don't think he's going to turn up ! Epsom Common ? Unlikely........  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had a busy afternoon. Met with Paula and bumped into MJ. MJ has been very busy spreading the word up to the Thames! Fantastic! Will let them both update with the specifics of their fab efforts. Paula and I went to Garsons--area is well covered with posters, we added one to the entrance of the Prince of Wales Pub after a chat with the lady in charge. Then we went in different directions to maximise efforts. I dropped into Moor Place Golf Course, Esher and left a bunch for golfers. Put up a few posters around Esher town centre, including ChristChurch, outside Pizza Exp, at a busy ped crossing, and the Albert Arms pub. Also put posters in all the accessible letterboxes on Littleworth Common Road which edges the woods, and at the footpath entrance to that common. Other sides still need doing. I daylost light and couldn't find the Bupa Ctr, or Claremont Gdn Ctr. I have also emailed letter and poster to Christchurch Esher, have bcc'd letter to those of you I have emails for as fyi of how letter has evolved. It can be a boilerplate for you to customise and send out if you think of places to contact. Your editorial comments also welcome.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Following on from Karen's info about River Direction - Copied over info about River Mole Lower Mole At Leatherhead, the Mole leaves the chalk and turns northwestwards to flow across impermeable London Clay towards Cobham. The water table rises at this point and much of the water which drained out of the channel through the chalk returns through springs in the riverbed. The aquifer at Fetcham is the only one in the entire catchment area. At Cobham the river changes direction again, flowing northwards, passing Esher to the west before splitting into two branches at the Island Barn Reservoir near Molesey: the northern (and smaller) branch continues as the River Mole and the southern branch is known as the River Ember.[8] The two rivers flow either side of the reservoir, before flowing side by side in a north easterly direction, merging 400 metres before the confluence with the River Thames, on the reach above Teddington Lock.[8] (For the purposes of the remainder of this article, the River Mole and the River Ember are treated as a single entity.) Have also contacted River Thames Society, Thames Riverboats, and Environment AgencyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Brilliant explanation, thank you for that. Perhaps if we combine the 'following the water' idea with the chance that Hugo's internal compass is trying to lead him home, North-East-ish, we might get ahead of him by pushing our efforts in that direction? It's such a shot in the dark, but until we get another sighting to confirm which way he's moving it may well be worth a shot. Thoughts, comments? I emailed letter and poster to Homewood and Deepwood paintball as well as to SW Trains. Now I'll pack my posters and hit the road. Hope to see some of you later today--am avail by phone.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The river at the back of Ripley is the Wey. The Mole runs through Cobham, then passes with in a few hundred yards of Pointers Road at the back of Chatley Heath. Then to the south of the A3, through Painshill Landscape Gardens, under the Portsmouth Road and A3, to the rear of Notre Dame School, across what looks like farm land, through Burhill Golf Course, then more farms, to the rear of ACS then Winterdown Wood (the Ledges), to the back of West End Common and to the rear of Garsons Farm. From there it skirts the back of Esher, then to Molesey, then looks like it joins the Thames at Hampton Court.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I put 3 posters up in that area Jan. I don't live far....the river is quite wide and deep there with steep embankments so be careful with your dogs if they like water. On the other side of the Mole river is the Hersham riverside park...I will leave posters there today....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Anxiously following the story of the 'man creeping about in the bushes' before deciding on my walk today ! Hopefully it was Mike. If you see a lady with two schnauzers furtively searching thru the undergrowth, please declare yourself as a fellow Hugo hunter. I do carry a hammer at all times when postering so there is a potential for injury if I'm feeling nervous.    Don't know much about the river in that area, though I know Hersham Bridge, went to poster in the park there a few days ago and found it was done. I sometimes walk along the river at the back of the woods off Ripley Green, lots of locks along there, is this the Mole ?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Regarding MJ's first post of 14/02/2009 I have a funny feeling the stange man in his fifties might be me! I have been out several times at dusk on Esher common searching for Hugo! I tend to try to take my dogs off the beaten track in my search. Unfortunately my canine assistants are GSDs so I am very wary of spooking him too much, but a new sighting is what we all need. I had great help from Doglost and helpers when I lost Dash so Liz (wifey) and I are searching all our regular dog walking spots in the area. Around Esher there is also West End as mentionned and Fairmile Common. To the back of West End Common is also an area that can be reached from the car park on the lane leading to the American Community School.
Good Luck!

Wasnt able to help yesterday and Im without a car this morning but should be able to get out again this afternoon. Level of help and dedication of local helpers never ceases to amaze me - Im reminded of previous searches in our area - Digby, Merlin and Yiftaki (the blinkin Greek dog!) - all had positive outcomes after varying amounts of time - come on Hugo!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked at Chatley Heath (semaphore tower area) today, gave out slips with phone number to dog walkers and riders that I spoke too.  Happy to pass phone details to you (how we miss the interaction of the private message facility we had on the old site !) But my pathetic mobile handset is just about giving up on me and I must make it a priority to get a new phone next week. As it's only a pay as you go thingy I'm not sure if I can keep the same number so no point in passing it on at the moment. Sad to confess that though I've had this wretched mobile for several years I have never worked out how to text, send or receive !  I am greatly comforted by the fact that my children can't work it out either, so it must be bad.   Has there been any local paper coverage of our chap ?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, Haven't posted before as have had nothing constructive to add, but have bumped into Jo and Freda (I'm the lady with the other two GSP's) at Chatley Heath on a couple of occasions! Have been looking for Hugo (quietly!!) for about a month, generally up at Chatley Heath. Have read the latest postings and have been over to The Homewood and Winterdown Wood this afternoon. It struck me that Hugo might be following the Mole River....? It skirts the area he was originally lost from, and it may be how he has successfully negotiated the M25/A3....?  Hope that might be helpful, sorry nothing more positive to report. Karen. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I will go and put posters up at Hurst Park (right by Hampton Bridge...trying to be ahead of H!!!) and Molesey Heath which backs onto the reservoir and the golf club i believe...loads of rabbits there that might attract a hungry boy!very happy to be part of "phone tree". loads of liver in my freezer and car at all time just in case!!!will walk Esher Common tomorrow again....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Taxis, and RR not done yet, great idea thank you! MJ, the 10th sighting was reported more than 24 hours after it happened, but this reminds me that I would like to set up a phone tree so that when a solid sighting does come in I don't spend an hour phoning around, but maybe make 2 calls and get in the car and head that way while each person then calls 2 more etc so all of Team Hugo can know straight away and perhaps, as available, get to his spot with liver cake and pilchards and bottles of scent to keep an eye on his movements from a distance till I can get there. We need a sort of game plan. Will work this out off site... Also, thank you for your txts. I have received a couple of calls from GSP owners who have worried that our sightings may have been of their dogs.  Luckily we have so far been able to rule out theirs due to timing. One lovely lady has a 5 yr old spitting image of Hugo, hers called Otto, and they walk Esher Common area daily. Docked tail the only obvious difference. A number of people have called me asking for Hugo's name. Please don't give it out. This chase is going on so long, I really want to discourage any well intentioned accidental spookings. Please emphasize the importance of just calling me or DL straight away. Keeping my number in their pockets is pure genius. I recevied a call just now, while typing, from a woman whose friend overheard a conversation last week about a man from one of the paintball places going into Budgeons in E.Horsely to buy food for a very skinny dog who had some spots. Well, I suppose every lead must be followed... Even if not our boy, it might be somebody's. Family demands keeping me here today but I plan to come out tomorrow for as much of it as possible.    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi all!It will be interesting to see if Meg covers as much ground as Hugo. I will inform my colleagues who cover the area. I am around this week end but in charge of doggie-customers so will not be able to spend 8 hours walking. But I will walk at Esher common (my back garden!) and West End (my other back garden!!!). I was notified that a strange man in his 50's was wandering among the bushes at Black Pond (ie Esher Common) and off the paths. My colleagues were not sure if they had to feel for their safety or the dogs so they stayed clear of him.So beware ladies.....May be he has his own agenda re. Hugo???? Re the last sighting and future ones, is there any way that we can be texted when it happens/as it happens as it will allow some of us to get on the spot quickly if we can.We need to try and be ahead of him and hot on his heels as the same time.......Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you Stef for excellent long chat and wealth of infomation. Looking forward to your email. Had hoped to make early start tomorrow, but can't get away til afternoon. I will check in here to see who else will be around.  Feel free to ring me after 2. Until we have a better idea of where Hugo is a highly organised search party might have to wait. In the meantime let's keep postering and looking around in a loosely organised way... I'm sure this is well redundant, but at this late hour my brain takes comfort in the repitition.  This is what I have been emphasising to those I've spoken to who want to be helpful eyes: keep my number in their pocket, and if they see Hugo, not to call or approach him, but just ring me, watch from a distance and possibly put down some tasty smelly food to encourage him to stay in the area if they happen to have some treats available... Letters and posters have been emailed to: Epsom and Ewell Borough Council, Ripley, Wisley, Ockham and Horsely Police Teams. Surbiton Golf Club and ACS Int'l Sch have both confirmed putting up and circulating posters.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I feel like we've been trailing behind Hugo after each sighting and would love to get in front of him with our posters etc. We may have done just that with Esher. But trying to think like a dog on the run, where else should we try to get ahead of him? Could he have an internal compass directing him back to London perhaps? In case he is following the A3 trying to get home, I have also emailed Surbiton Golf Club. Fabulous Help from friends: they have contacted and emailed Cobham and District Dog Training Club, and also a Dog Trainer based in Esher called Ken Cockram - also trying to secure the phone number and e mail address of the Metropolitan Police Service - Mounted Branch who are based in Esher. And compiled a list of sports clubs etc around the Imber Court. Freda rang up an old contact, the Mole Valley DW, CAroline Grant who had these comments:  we can be sure that Hugo is not going hungry, as Pointers are such good hunters (this has its drawbacks, as if he were hungry he could more easily be tempted with food.  She did suggest that we contact a local householder and ask them to put out food regularly with the aim of eventually using a cage and trapping him.  She has done this successfully with a dog.  She also stressed that we must not get too many people out searching at the same time as this will drive him away.  One dog that was united with its owners after being missing for some weeks was in very poor condition but settled in back at home as if he had never been away!  He was, however, always very very wary of strangers after his experience.  She mentioned scenting with items from home. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had to return to base as visitors arrived  ****** ! Went into Claremont Gardens, what lovely helpful NT people. Took poster for entrance kiosk and said I could put up poster at entrance, several people going in asked about him and I had written the contact number on slips of paper which I gave them. Walked and postered over Esher common, such a huge area swallows posters ! Gave out all my slips with phone number and spoke to many dog walkers. Put poster at entrance to Blackhills private estate. Saw poster in Garsons Farm by the way Paula and put more around there. Went in to Garsons stables and gave posters to riders in there. Then my searching was seriously interrupted by having to come back home, hope relatives don't read this.  Noticed there was a golf course at the back of Claremont Drive which would be very much in the area. I haven't received any different ones, but can write in red about the new sighting on the ones I've got and will be out with them this morning.  The school I mentioned is, I'm pretty sure, a boarding school so lived in 24 hours a day, to have them looking out would be great.  I will print some more and poster as many houses as I can but if my printer is still being stroppy they may have to be b & w. I'll put 'Seen in this area Wednesday 11th Feb' on them in red. It has got another new colour block which I haven't tried yet, maybe this will be one that it feels it can get on with..........So good to have a sighting, Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am unable to get to Hugo's area until this weekend--unless I can justify a sort of emergency because we've cornered him or something, but even then it's an hour's drive.  This is SO frustrating! A satellite photo of the area shows miles of trees and very big houses. Can anyone put posters through letterboxes tomorrow? Even if my location for poster is too vague, I have sent it out to you all. Please excuse the generic message attached to it, to be efficient I've bcc'd and included Esher newspaper, BBC SE, Paul the CES DW that covers Esher, Elmbridge etc, Neville the Woking DW, (I don't seem to have Pete the Dog's email? maybe you could text it to me), DL HQ, Spoiled Rotten Pets etc. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am so relieved we've had a sighting, but daunted by the vastness of this new area. The sighting was yesterday about noon. MJ has alerted a number of professional dog walkers who walk in the area--thank you! I will get onto Esher, Elmbridge and the school mentioned with yet another new poster. This one says at top in beg red letters: 'MISSING Seen 10 Feb' as for naming the location would 'between Cobham and Esher Common' be clear enough? please let me know asap so I can start emailing it to you and everyone tonight...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Did anyone take a poster in to Claremont Gardens ?  I know dogs aren't allowed in there but Hugo might choose to ignore the notices.  Also this is very near Claremont Fan Court School, if it hasn't been done maybe Adriana you could e mail them details and poster. They are on line. Will try and get around there tomorrow. Just opposite the car park where he was possibly seen is another small parking place with a path that leads onto a large common area and the Black Pond. This is where I usually walk my dogs and I did put some posters up around there went Hugo first went missing. Been avooiding it lately as it does get very wet, but will certainly hope to get there tomorrow.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Elmbridge have sub-contractors doing their dog wardening (is that a word??) called Clements Environmental Services (CES), who take all the strays they pick up to the Battersea Dogs Home at Old Windsor.  ILast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ive just been over on my way back from work. I think Perry/Audrey beat me to it - poster already handed in at Garsons Farm (though I didnt see it displayed) Also saw poster up at the carpark in question. I handed out some posters to various dog walkers I saw. Adriana please make sure you speak again to Esher council tomorrow and we really need to find out which kennels they use so we can double double check he isnt handed in there.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just come back from walking at Chatley and over the other side of the A3 at Ockham/Wisley.  Know the car park you mean near Garsons Farm if only I'd chosen that area. Thought it would be too waterlogged but will certainly hope to get that way tomorrow. Garsons have always been very good about taking posters if they haven't been 'done' already.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Managed a couple of hours walking around the Chatley Heath area this afternoon, ever hopeful that Hugo would wander out from a clump of Rhodos !  Still don't know where this tomb is, although I covered parts I've never been over before in the hope of finding  it and more importantly its elusive (possible) tenant.  Much love to him wherever he is xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What excellent suggestions from everyone, thank you!! I certainly have my work cut out for me this week and eager to begin. I agree widening search area esp to urban areas is important now. Mjs point about a pattern possibly not being representative of Hugo's habits but perhaps indicative only of faulty reporting sounds potentially valid. However, if Hugo is in hiding, then it follows that he will only emerge when he feels safest, ie when the fewest people are about such as at dusk on weekdays.  So I don't quite know what to think. I will report my progress on DL, if it appears slow it's only due to the fact I'm working fulltime this week. Keep those fabulous suggestions coming please.  I am happiest phoning and emailing, but a bit nervous about contacting the press/radio after my initial attempts seem to have produced so little. Help on this would be most appreciated, and perhaps coming from a 3rd party might add weight to our claim that Hugo is important to many and has a large following?  Perry was out with us on Saturday, and today followed up a radio report of a large dog on a motorway, only to find it was a mastiff (a bit bigger than what we're after). He suggested we post someone at the big food stores this weekend, Sainsbury's etc, to hand out posters to the masses doing their weekly shop, as so many people will travel quite a way for their shopping this would be an efficient way to spread the word further afield and to raise awareness to a population that's not necessarily atuned to doggy things. I am very interested in learning more about scent trails and tracking so will phone our friendly expert as suggested. Thank you all for keeping at it with me! Today makes 4 weeks, and my heart aches for my best friend, cold and soggy somewhere. Julie, thank you for coming out of the woodwork, you certainly know how these handsome, noble, goofy fellows can steal a person's heart, as well as her dinner! And all the more lovable for their headstrong ways. My daughter said this morning, 'This might sound strange, but I miss telling Hugo to get his nose out of the bin!' 'Me too, honey!'

Just followed a vehicle from Cobham Equine Services who are based in 7 Hills Road on the St Georges Hill side.  I've just emailed them with all the info as they could be a good contact as they go around all the yards in the area.  Asked if they could keep an eye out in the woods behind theirs and to ask their clients to check all outbuildings, etc in their yards, you never know ...  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry I haven't been able to join the search parties this weekend as I've been out of the area this weekend. Unfortunately tied up with various appts. today and tomorrow. Will hope to be back on the Hugo trail on Wednesday. Lets hope for  some sightings. Think every avenue has been suggested. The owner of Henry the lab, missing near me last week, managed to get a really good letter and picture on the letter page of the local Guardian. Has Hugo been in any local papers ?. I'm not really in that area so wouldn't have seen it. In case you haven't seen the story Henry was in 'Council care' all the time he was missing !  Despite owner checking and double checking with them AND he had phone number on his collar ! So its seemes unlikely that such incompetents would have checked for a chip even if he'd had one. He was found 'cos someone who had a friend at the kennels saw a poster and mentioned it to them. Moral for all owners of missing dogs check, check and check again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have not commented before but I am following Hugo's story every day.  I have just lost George my GSP at 15, as mentioned in the previous post - they are briliant hunters (many a time we would see a whole rabbit swallowed in one!!)  he was even seen coming out of peoples houses with stolen food.  He used to run off and travel miles (fortunately he never came to any harm).  He was headstrong, stubborn, proud and a beautiful family dog.  I am sure you will get your lovely Hugo back and enjoy many, many years of fun with him GOOD LUCK thinking of you every day.  Kind Regards JulieLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Seven Hills garden centre have posters - checked yesterday on my way to the meet.   Mesage from Patsy: It was good to meet Hugo's owner, Adriana, and her daughter Zoe yesterday, plus PiperPup and MJ.  Also ran into my friend PaulaK  with Jo, one of the Celia Cross Greyhound Rescue volunteers who is helping with the search, but does not post on DL although she looks in. Walked with Jo quite late in the afternoon in area of sightings in the Semaphone Tower area. Jo was brilliant and spoke to every single walker we met and gave out lots posters. We also spoke to two riders out with their dogs and horses who took posters back to their yard at Orchard Farm. Also met v. nice couple from Horsley out with their two GSP's (liver and white just like Hugo, but with docked tails) and two black dobermans. They knew all about Hugo and said that in their opinion a young GSP would be excellent at hunting to feed himself, but pointed out that they do travel long distances and we should widen the postering/search. They walk regularly in the area and will keep a look out. With their two dogs, and PiperPups's two, there is the strong
possibility that some of these sightings could be other dogs . . . .
Regarding scenting:  have spoken to Jayne at DogLost today who advises scenting only in areas of reliable sightings, but not laying a trail.
I have been given bottles of exciting smells (!) by Adriana, so I can do this, but then we do need to monitor where we have scented regularly (so need to discuss amongst ourselves who can monitor etc. ).
(Jayne has also given me mobile phone number for Dee, DL co-ordinator in Southeast, who is expert at scenting/tracking feral dogs  -  will email this to Adriana today).  Meanwhile, I have been given huge supply of fresh posters by Adriana and Paula, so this week my plan is to poster extensively in more urban areas where people see the posters (schools, doctor's sugeries, etc etc). Jo has also taken supply of new posters to put up in her area (Horsley). Thank you for supplying huge quantities of posters Adriana and Paula.  Thank you for the advice Jayne . . . V. good ad in Horse & Hound, Adriana. Will email you with more press ideas.  PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just driving back after school run and noticed a lot of the Downside posters are looking a little soggy so will go out and renew them, will also drop into my vets (Cobham Park) and advise them that Hugo still on the run.  I'm doing Ripley Farmers Market on Saturday so will take loads of leaflets with me and make sure all my customers know.  It's so frustrating!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

could it be because he left an area where people were on the look out and went into an area where he was less advertised so less chance of bumping into people on the look out. so the conclusion is that we have to be careful not to read to much into these patterns as they might not be patterns and we have to make sure that the whole area including Cobham, Ockham, Painshill .....is covered with posters. Lastly...where did Perry park before starting his walk on the 12th????Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Also Silvermere Farm Estate?....Last idea: some of us could prepare a casserole and meet at car park and have an al fresco dinner....with lovely aromas of sausages, garlic, chicken......might attract a hungry handsome boy!!! Having looked further at your very useful map and dots, I can see that he was sighted on week-days and only one saturday although more people are out walking on Sats. It could be of course that he was sighted more often but people were unaware of him missing or did not have contact number or did not care! however as you mentioned, the timings are mostly end of afternoon.is it because he used to be walked in the afternoon so comes out then?there were also no reported sightings for 7 days after he ran off probably because it was not yet publicised. people might still have seen him. then no reported sigthings for another 9 days between sighting 4 and 5Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

we need to "shower" the woods with scent to either keep him there and lead him to the car parks or bring him back there. In order to make the scent last longer, how about leaving a fair amount (you and your family need to drink loads and eat curry and asparagus!!! :-)) and scent the moss on the trees, as many trees as poss, not too low where other dogs will pee but not too high.....and ...Adriana you have long hair...could we borrow some and pin them on trees too. Make sure you don't wash them for days (sorry!!! just an idea!!!)....Other idea: use a leaftet distributor company to make sure that all households get a poster. We need to make sure that people in these big houses do check their garden and sheds. Did you see the owners of the black dog yesterday? All venues with large bins (hotels, restau, farms) should be contacted and kept informed. Is the Swan pub kept in loop?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes it was great meeting all this week end! more ideas for contact: Cobham vet at the corner of seven hills road south? and the Hilton in the same road (is this the Inn by the Lake??), St George's Hill garden centre (the pet shop inside is called Pet Corner and should be able to put poster up behind till). Surrey Pet shop in Hersham. There is a groomer in Hersham too...don't know name.It is important to keep a list of all recipients and give them update as soon as there is a sighting....to keep them in the frame and on the bowl! I am now sorry I did not take any "scent". Adriana I know that you have been scenting where he was last seen...how about creating a whole trail with the scent that would lead from various areas where he was seen and close-by back to the car parks. I know potentially dangerous but more likely to be seen and more people aware now. Also he might be more traffic aware now.we could also scent the perimeter of the woods by the big houses with big gardens on the other side of the road.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I do hope the weather will improve for all this searching. I can't believe how bad it is around me . Still  very difficult to get out of my road. Have managed to get to Fairmile Common with the dogs today as that direction seems better, soggy but better. Put up some Hugo posters. Won't commit to the weekend as there seems to be a good turn out planned, don't want to say I'll be there and then not make it.  I hope conditions around the Downs will improve so  I will be able to do some postering etc for poor Henry the lab who is lost so locally to me that I keep hoping to see him wandering in my garden.  If I find the area well postered I may be able to get over to Ockham, really like to see all these ladies crawling thru the bushes pockets crammed with stinky bits of liver cake.....If I dont get there saturday I almost certainly will sunday but hopefully I may not need to still be looking for Hugo xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When you walk Adriana, make sure that you imprint each of your steps firmly in the ground.this is how gun dogs can retrace their owners' steps in a "fetch" exercise.no need for the rest of us to do the same or may be just Perry...and anyone H knows well... here is the liver cake recipe for those who do not have it: 1lb liver, 1lb granary flour, 3 eggs, little oil, little milk, 5 gloves of garlic (this is not a french recipe I swear!!!). liquidise liver, eggs, milk, oil, garlic together.pour flour into large microwave proof bowl.pour liquidised ingredients into the flour.mix well. cook in the bowl, full power for approx 12 mins. cut into small pieces.if fresh liver used, cake can be frozen for a month. ENJOY!!! see you at the week end and make sure you wear your lucky socks!!!I will!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

we could also agree a procedure in case of sighting. for example: no direct eye contact with H, no calling H, give him space but put food down and monitor movements while Adriana on her way. If Adriana is not around, adopt submissive position low on the ground and get H used to you been there. get some food out to keep him interested so that he stays in the area until A comes.....Just some suggestions of what I would do...or have done in the past!!!any more ideas? I will carry loads of smelly food/treats with me:chicken, garlic sausage, hamburgers (you will see all the strays trailing me!!!!) and will attempt to make a dog liver cake (may be a job for Audry to bake a few???). Sorry I could go on and on! Adriana has H been to training? are there commands that he might obey very easily? "stay" "down"...."fetch"??.would be useful to know...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi! did write a long text last night but got lost to my g8 frustration!so here it goes again: I will be available Saturday and Sunday and will start from the Old Lane car park from 10am. I will then meet you when you get there if you text me. I can meet with anyone before of course!Adriana you were going to mark the spots where H was sighted over the weeks.Should we join all these spots into an area that we would split in smaller areas to be allocated to each volunteer and search simultaneously if we have the resources? we could search let's say 5 areas (nearest to the semaphore as a priority) for one or 2 hours then if we had enough resources operate some kind of shifts so that we do not leave the area for a few hours increasing the probability of sighting Hugo. Would be g8 if we all had a copy of the same map with markings.....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have asked Perry to look at the tracks and put food out today, and asked him to gently tell Audry to keep a distance (thank you MJ) so her shepherd's scent doesn't potentially put Hugo off. I have left a message for owner of black dog asking if I might see where he gets out of his garden, and back in again, in hopes of perhaps even trailing black dog on one of his adventures this weekend which might lead to Hugo though that may be far fetched, or even just getting sense of area/direction black dog wanders... Esher paper have said they would run something on Hugo. Others have failed even to reply to my letter-to-the-editor submission. Horse & Hound online listing due to go on this pm, ad to run next thu 12th (hope it will be superfluous!). I am very eager to arrange a group search--brilliant plan! Would happily do all day and night both Sat and Sun but will check with family before I abandon them again.  What day/time suits all of you...?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Yes, am happy to join in organised search at weekend depending on time/ day. So is my greyhound friend, Freda. But do suggest we only do this
if owner comes along too, she gives us bottles of scenting stuff etc.
Meanwhile, we need to replace soggy posters, especially in Ockham village, Ripley. Cobham as well as the woods.  Am digging my car out today! PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi MJ here. How about an organised walk at the week-end? we could cover multiple grounds at the same time without crowding the place and if a sighting did occur we could join forces? I am available and will go in the area walking my dog anyway.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry I haven't been able to get to the Hugo area since Sunday, still so much ice and snow around.  Looking in everyday (several times if poss) and following those that are working so hard to track him down. Had to comment re Patsys 'email from a friend' 'cos I'm sure she mentions the two ladies I met on Sunday ! What a pair ! Only asked them if  they'd take a poster so they had contact number to hand ! Behaved as if I was mad, said there were plenty of posters around and anyway he'd been missing for ages, I did tell them that he'd been sighted on Saturday morning just yards from where we were standing, which was near the Tower but I could tell they weren't really interested. Considering they had several dogs between them I find that quite incredible. One of them was a perfect lookalike/soundalike for Camilla (Parker Bowles as was) so maybe she sensed I didn't like her either.  Stay safe Hugo, lots of kind, dedicated ladies looking for you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Email message today from local dogwalking friend and DL helper:  Took husband and greyhound and walked Ockham Common today -parked in car park off Old Lane by small pond and walked over Common to Semaphore Tower.  No sightings, sadly.  Many posters still in evidence.  Quite a number of dog walkers and I spoke to every one we met - gave them each piece of paper with owner's number on to keep in their pockets in case of a sighting, all graciously received!
Only two ladies (together) bit blase about it - "Oh, it's been missing for weeks, hasn't it" - it was good to raise their eyebrows when I told them Hugo had been seen last week - guess they will take a bit more notice now! Such an expanse of land over there - difficult to know where to start.
Wise Denise, who runs the re-homing kennels 'Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare' at Hersham and who is anxiously watching for news of Hugo, said to me "You've really just got to hope for a sighting from a member of the public".  This theory worked successfully for a loose greyhound in Croydon a short while ago (though I know there were helpers who couldn't stop themselves going to search) - but I feel it is rather different in a rural area.  [Black Swan crosroads and Ockham village still need more posters apparently  -  sorry cannot get there today myself Px]Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry Gina, just got your message.  Have just returned from 3 hours searching.  Didn't meet a soul!  We parked in various areas and looked around the main areas.  There are lots of tracks in the snow and we went off the main tracks and through the rhododendrons as our dogs were very interested in there.  Put them on leads so they didn't spook the boy.  So many places in that area where Hugo could set up camp.  Don't know if it would be better to stay a bit of a distance from that area in case all the activity is making him go deeper??  Really don't know what to do for the best.  We just want to see him.  Sorry no positive news today.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It's creepy!!!  Actually a mausoleum.  It's about 10 mins walk from the semaphore tower so could be a good spot,  I'm waiting rather impatiently for my husband to come home, although if he's not back before it starts getting dark will probably leave til morning as it's an odd place (yes, I am a cowardly custard!!).  Also, the roads are still pretty grim. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The old tomb, heavens ! this all sounds very 'Sherlock Holmes'. Wonderful if this is somewhere he's been resting. Never heard of it, where abouts is it from the semaphore tower ? Not that I'm going to go marauding round disturbing him (couldn't get anywhere at all at the moment anyway !) but useful to know when I do manage to get there. Which as always I hope will be just to remove posters. Fingers crossed this will be a much needed break thru' xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Gina, that sounds so encouraging, my heart is leaping! I am stuck in London still, not sure about tomorrow with schools and work and roads etc. but I would be so thankful if someone could put a bit of food out for the leaver of these maybe-Hugo tracks. Anything to keep him in a spot. Likewise, Perry told the Cafe staff to feed him anything tasty and to start a tab for Hugo if he turns up, just to keep him near... PiperPup and I told the weekend staff the same.  If anyone else passes the cafe, it would be worth letting whoever is working know same message and to pass it along at shift changes. Many thanks! I drafted a letter-to-the-editor with Hugo's photo and all relevant info and emailed it to BBC Southeast, Surrey Mirror, Leatherhead and Dorking Advertisers, The Post, Surrey Advertiser Group, Local Guardian, Richmond and Twickenham Times, and Esher and Aldershot. I also placed an ad in Horse and Hound, to run in 12 Feb edition, and online starting later today. While it runs only 1x in the weekly print mag, it will be on their website for a month.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just got back and no joy I'm afraid.  Roads still bit dodgy but we did cover some ground.  Lots of tracks but leading to nothing.  More people up there today so informed them Hugo still missing.  I'm hoping schools will be back tomorrow so I can take myself off up there (can't get about so quickly with an 8 year old!).  Gina, forgot about the old tomb.  You mentioned you'd go there and I'll try and get there tomorrow.  Sorry not better news. My lovely husband (take back all the rotten things I've said about him!!) has kindly offered his services very first thing tomorrow morning so we'll be heading off back to Chatley, Ockham, etc pretty early in the Land Rover (he loves off roading so snowy roads are a hit with him!).  Apparently not too much footfall over these areas today so hoping it might be easier to see any paw tracks.  Will obviously keep you all in the loop. Message from Patsy: Adriana:   couple more ideas for your busy to-do list:  if not already
done so, do contact Leatherhead & Dorking Advertiser re ads and/or poss. editorial. They are always v. helpful and sympathetic to DogLost. (copy date Tuesday!) Although Wisley/Ockham is out of their area, Hugo was possibly seen on Bookham Common, which IS in their area. Failing that, just write a Letter to the Editor (you can email
it) to all local papers, appealing to readers to keep a look out etc.
Enclose his photo.  We did this when helping look for Monkey, greyhound missing from Clandon and all letters got printed.  Surrey Ad may do an editorial if you contact News Editor. Also try Woking News & Mail and Esher and Cobham News.  Re local radio, Eagle Radio and Radio Jackie have both helped DL in the past with local dogs. Have you emailed poster to local doctors surgeries? When Taffy, local collie missing from Brockham was found a couple of years ago, it was the poster in the local surgery that brought him home. So many things to
do when stuck at home in the snow  -   I am bombarding friends with
emails . . . One good thing:  in this snow there are hardly any cars on the roads which will make it safer for Hugo. Keep safe Hugo . . . .PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi. I contacted you when I was myself looking for a springer spaniel in the area. She was re-united with her owners after 48 h. Very lucky! Sorry Hugo not caught yet. Was thinking of him and you when there were loud fireworks around Esher week end before last.I see your note on to-do list re . radio. We did contact Jacky when we were looking 4 spaniel and they declined as they would be too much in demand to advertise lost dogs. Not sure if this is new idea: instead of just leaving posters on trees and so on....print hundreds of them and hand them out so that people have all the info on them if they see Hugo. Sorry if obvious and already in place. I would like to help in the search once it stops snowing. I walk am and lunch over in Twickenham (I am a professional dog walker) but live in Hersham so could join afternoons....Good luck!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You are all so brilliant! Hugo and I are very lucky to have you on our side. Marvelous suggestions here, plus Patsy's email to me, a long to do list has formed... would love to share some of the tasks as there is too much to do with any speed on my own.  But No.1 idea that can be included in all that we do is to ask everyone to check their sheds, stables, outbuidlings, hay barns etc. regularly for Hugo. In the meantime, I'm snowed in in London, so if Hugo is found today PiperPup has kindly offered to take him in til I can collect him as she is so close to the action. Let's all pray we can take her up on this wonderful offer! -This week I will chart all the sightings on ordinance survey
-I can look into take an ad in Horse & HOund
-I can place another ad with Surrey Advertiser
-have already put 'still missing' poster up at Farrants
-Here are other To Do's I could use help with:
-Alert (call/email poster) Neighbourhood Watch in the various areas bordering
-Alert Richmond Park
-Find out how/who to contact about those House For Sale signs
-Alert Pets @ home in Raynes Park
-Contact Radio Jackie, Capital, Eagle to find out how to get coverage, if there's a charge, etc A million thanks!

Message from Patsy Sorry, cannot get car out because of thick snow. Just a suggestion if not done before:  please could anyone who knows people who live in the area ring them TODAY and ask them to look in sheds, stables, under hedges in gardens etc and then ask them to ring neighbours and pass the message on. Have neighbourhood watch been alerted in Ockham/ Ripley? Does anyone know who farms at Bridge End Farm to call them to ask them to look in cattle shed and other outbuildings regularly? This heavy snow may draw him down to the houses  -  or of course he may be
lying low under cover n the woods. Sorry I cannot get to area today -
wish I had a Land Rover!  Snow could be to Hugo's advantage  -  warmer than the last few windy days and he will show up in the snow . . . .PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy, Sunday 01.02.09: Sunday afternoon walked for about two hours till after dusk from Pond Car park, round lake, along Elm Lane to Elm Corner, through Snakes Field and over airfield to farm with the chickens, cows etc. It is called BRIDGE END FARM (sorry, not Hyde Farm as in my previous post).
Walked though farm along bridleway, down the hill to Ockham village, postering on the way. Turned right and back up the next track along stream (lots of pheasants and sheltered places good for Hugo) and then back up to airfield. Crossed over back to Elm Corner and then back through woods to Wilderness Farm and back to car park. Spent ages letting my dog rummage in undergrowth and hedges, so hoping he would flush Hugo out  -  but sadly no sign of him. PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just come back from waloing in the semaphore tower area also crossed the footbridge and walked the other side (very muddy in all the timber lorry tracks) Put up quite a few posters as I didn't actually see any, also handed out to dog walkers. They were all aware already but took poster to have phone number to hand, which led me to remember Carla the GSD, missing around Chipstead. Some time ago now, loads of sightings owner rushed to the place but always too late Then I was lucky enough to see her walking towards me as I was out postering (what a fantastic feeling !) Total panic though, knees go completely wobbly and brain switches off ! However I did manage to contact owner quickly and Carla was safely restored to her family.  Her owner printed strips of paper with a contact number on and fixed them to some of the posters (stapled I think or maybe punched a hole and threaded cord thru ?), so having read the info on the missing dog people could take the strip and have the number ready. Obviously there's a risk of idiots phoning you up but they can do that anyway if they are so inclined. I know there are loads of posters around so you may not think it worth it, just a thought. I was only thinking of selected posters ie in the car parks in these wooded areas. Gotta go visitors just arrived............xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Happy to do this as just round corner from me.  Beginning to wonder if same black dog if he was possibly seen with him yesterday as pretty sure our black dog was with his owners.  Sounds like we were all walking the same routes yesterday which is good as I've just got a gut feeling that's where he is.  Stables that are aware of Hugo are Long Reach, near Ockham Church (back of airfield); Ockham Lane Stables; Pound Farm, Old Lane; Hazeldene Farm, Ockham Lane (behind "black dog's" house), Pointers Farm.  We have friends who have fields in Pointers Road so they are aware, also another buddy regularly walks the airfield.  The whole of Elm Corner are now aware and one of the house owners there has paddocks on Old Lane by Ockham Common.  Can only fit in short walk for my two today and family committments (annoyingly!) so will be back up at Chatley tomorrow. Glad the owner of black dog has been located - lets hope it leads to Hugo! Went out with Patsy yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours - details in Patsys words (as everyone knows Im useless at remembering road names etc)!! Message from Patsy, Sat. 31.01.09: Met Paula at Pond Car Park, Old Lane in afternoon. Brought one of my dogs and we walked till dark across Ockham Common to Ockham Manor, then along lane and across fields on footpaths back to Old Lane and crossed over to airfield at stile by Daisy Cottage. Met riders and gave them posters for putting up in their yards;  met lady feeding horses by field shelter near Ockham Manor (who had met Hugo's owner that morning). All aware of Hugo. Walked all round edge of airfield (lots of rabbits, stream, hiding places), past farm on airfield (Hyde
Farm?) where there are plenty of free range chickens and ducks to tempt a hungry dog on the run. Also cattle in barn. About a year ago in Gloucestershire, a missing a lurcher or whippet, can't remember which, was found tucked up with the beef cattle in a barn all warm and cosy  -  I think this farm could be a good hiding place for Hugo . . . ? Postered farm entrance. Walked right across airfield to Elm Corner and then back through woods to Old Lane and car park. Paula put up posters on the way, but we also saw plenty of owner's latest posters. Brilliant postering!  Note to owner/other DL helpers:  please can you be more specific about which houses/stables/farms are aware, so we don't double up visiting these places. Also suggest owner plots date/time/place of sightings on an ordnance survey type map so we can see if we have a pattern emerging. If he starts to have a regular route, then we can start setting up a safe feeding station.  With houses backing on to the common and airfield, there are good places to monitor this. But first we need more definite sightings . . . . .
Paula gave me a good supply of new posters, so will get out again tomorrow. Keep safe Hugo . . . . PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Possible sighting: A couple walking near Semaphore may have seen Hugo this morning with the black dog again. Hugo's favourite friend, Nick, and I walked miles and miles last night from 5 o'clock til 11 o'clock calling and searching but no joy. We started at The Plough, put up another poster (they keep taking them down) walked the length of Pointers Rd from where Hugo 1st spooked to A3, crossed the bridge to Semaphore Tower and wandered down to cafe car park, across to the lake, pond car park then back up the other side of the heath and back over bridge, drove to Elm Corner and walked and called, and finally Silvermere, visiting both fox feeding sites, Kats Castle, and walked the golf course. Fuelled by chocolate. Lovely PiperPup provided midnight meal and comfy bed with two gorgeous GSPs to snuggle down with. Mmmmm.... Thank you! So I'm awake and in the area this morning. Today's plan: do it again. Plus put up 'STILL MISSING' posters wherever poss, esp. Farrant's window, etc. This week I will have to earn a crust but will work the phones and emails whenver I can, I will run another ad in the paper, and dash down for sightings (given it's a 25 mile dash along the A3) as best I can. Is the Surrey Advertiser the best way to go? Other ideas welcome! Grateful to you all, delighted to see new names, as ever, A xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy Thursday evening: Went over to area of latest sighting by Semaphore Tower at about 3.15pm Thurs. Took one of my dogs, best behaved one! Parked in Pointers Lane and crossed M25 on footbridge to Semaphore Tower, walked all over Chatley Heath to Old Lane car park, called Pond Car park, by what locals call Wisley Lake, but is Bolder Mere on the map. Met lots of dog walkers, many claimed not to have seen poster although there were plenty. Important to poster where PEOPLE  read poster, so they are aware of Hugo before they see him. Gave posters to walkers I met.
Walked till dusk, but nothing. Then explored woods round Chatley Park, then drove to Ockham and postered up lane to Ockham Manor and Ockham Park areas. We need lots more posters on the roads. cross roads, pubs etc. Sorry ran out of posters, light and time by then. Good luck with search on Friday. Sadly, I have to go to Birmingham. Spoke to owner who was planning to stake out the area in the evening. Good idea to take sachets of dog food, so if he is spotted just cut the end off and leave for him to stop and investigate in search for food. Slices of white bread also good as he can see these as you chuck them down. Good luck Hugo's owner. Keep safe Hugo . . . . PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sighted again 14:05! Not far from yesterday, near the car park by Semaphore Tower, possibly running with a stray black dog.  Please show yourself, Hugo...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

About to reply if you're happy about b & W (and I do think they are ok) don't worry about sending me any colour, but then I thought if you go to the trouble of sticking some in an envelope and posting them to me its even more likely that the lad will be in custody before they arrive. Thinking of al the times i've printed late into the night got up next morning to discover the 'missing' has been found and my posters aren't needed.  So I'll e mail my address to Paula to pass on and if you want to send me some that'll be great. Meantime I'll proceed with the b & w. I've plenty of plastic covers so don't worry if you haven't got your laminator yet. That will be another step to Hugos return, getting a laminator, that you may not need again ! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ive printed a pile of colour ones - can get some to you if you need Jan? Am going to try to get a little laminator if I can. Pete DW poster laminated looked so much better and stope the problems of rain damage. Fingers crossed we wont need it and Hugo gives himself up!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to Wisley and spent 4 hours searching with no joy -- but SO pleased Gina saw him today and phoned straight away! Thank you! Also thank you everyone who got there quickly to be my eyes before I could get to the scene! Have drafted a new poster with 'STILL MISSING' and a change of photo layout to catch and refresh attention (I regretted using the puppy shot of him as his ticking is much less distinct, he's almost entirely liver now) -- can email it to you if you text me your address. Im[ortant: not printing Hugo's name on posters as he is so easily scared, strangers calling him by name may keep him running... Since last update: spoke to residents and postered near today's sighting; spoke to and/or emailed RSPCA, Treetops, Surrey Police, Guildford DW, Woking DW, Elmbridge and Guildford Councils, the private DW for Elmbridge and other neighbouring bouroughs, local vets; registered Hugo as lost on Virtual BumblebeeLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This sighting is such good news. Thanks for the call Paula, only sorry I couldn't get to the area there and then. Am looking after an 'extra' dog for a while which is causing me rather more problems than I'd envisaged, but will hope to get out looking again tomorrow,....... if necessary. Sorry that I'm not able to do as much 'Hugo stuff' as I'd like this week. But I am thinking a lot ! (heaven help us !)  I'm sure it's important to make sure that RHS staff at Wisley are all aware of him. I was out walking with my dogs a while ago, just enjoying the countryside, thinking how nice it all looked, when it was pointed out to me 'reasonable politely' that I was in the RHS garden and dogs were absolutely forbidden, particularly off the lead and racing about everywhere as mine were ! Have no idea how I managed to get in there from just wandering in the woods ! Catastrophe if some vigilant member of staff chased off Hugo if he similarly strayed.  Also the golf course is nearby and he does seem to have a liking for golf, do they all know ? Do they need reminding ? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Fab updates everybody, thank you for keeping at it day after day! It means to much to me now especially as I am torn between my devotion to Hugo and my family's and my work's demands on my time so I'm afraid my nearly 24/7 vigil will be changing to whenever I can get out there and whatever I can do by email and phone. Daughter still poorly today, so at home, but hope to print some more posters for wed and thu and revisit the 2 fox feeding sites and to scent and dust them with hoover bag, scatter favourite treats, scour woods etc. Posters have also been given to Ocado delivery depot, Royal Mail postman to put up in sorting office. And I think Wisley is done though I've not been. -Jan, we've got ads running in a bunch of Surrey papers in 4 color with photo and beloved family pet and reward in bold red letters. Would love a feature story with our heartbreak but don't know how to swing it. In the meantime it's a great idea to include SUBSTANTIAL REWARD just in case that helps, thank you -Patsy via Paula: excelent suggestions, I've asked Perry (the dog walker who had Hugo when he was bitten/spooked) and Audry (whose Alsatian spooked Hugo) to poster tomorrow in Convent Lane, along A3, Seven Hills Rd, Convent School and Feltonfleet school and refresh posters in Painshill.  And I will now look up school's numbers to call. All these sorts of suggestions are most welcome as I am not familiar with the area! Keep them coming... -PiperPup: that would be so SUPER if you could poster the area you noted on Fri. Sadly I am at work that day. Thank you for the Wildlife Trust too! I am still hopeful that we will have that vision realized of your 2 plus my 1 GSP running together!!! Sooner rather than later I hope.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We've just got in from a very long walk in a new area!  Parked up by Byfleet Mill and walked down bridle path which leads onto Wisley Common.  It also borders the back of the golf course, Foxwarren Park and Katz Castle, and you can walk to the bottom of Redhill Road from there. Had a chat with 2 chaps from Surrey Wildlife Trust who hadn't heard of Hugo (amazingly).  I've just emailed the Trust with a poster to ask if their people could keep an eye out as they're regularly driving up there.  There is a lot of horse traffic along there and think it would be a good spot to poster. The path from Byfleet isn't postered and as it does lead up to the back of where Hugo was spotted think that might be a good point.  Quite a few dog walkers. (Also got a note of my car for parking on private propery - woops!!).  Can't get back out that way until Friday but will go along and put lots of posters up there then.  At least there is high fencing along there blocking off the M25 although there is a bridge over the M25 to the other side of Wisley (can't see him going that way though).  Just so wanted to see 3 GSPs galloping towards me but not today ...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Message from Patsy: Spent some time yesterday afternoon walking one of my dogs at Painshill. Posters all still up but v. soggy and need replacing (unfortunately I had run out of them by then). Then drove around sighting areas at Silvermere (saw v. tame roebuck just sitting in the fox-feeding area  -  maybe the was 'shiny eyes', though I'm not sure deer eyes shine in the dark like dogs/foxes?)  Drove down the lane leading to convent school  -  Convent Lane, which links Cobham near Sainsburys with Seven Hills Road and goes under the A3 by the river.
Had no posters but this needs postering as is the only route under the
A3 and lots of woodland, scruffy pony fields and lots of mummies collecting childen from the convent school. Any chance anyone postering there today?  -  sadly I am tied up most of the day. As well as the convent, good idea to poster Feltonfleet Prep School if not already done. (when we found Merlin missing from KT22 a year ago, it was the school posters that brought him home  -  maybe owner could email school secretary/ school bus companies etc etc). If you have a sighting, I'll bring my in-season visitor to lure him out . . . Px Im stuck at work :(  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have been wandering over Ockham Common with my dogs today as well, perhaps we should all be wearing 'Looking for Hugo' badges.  Will try to get somewhere else in the 'possible' area tomorrow.  I am looking after another dog myself from Wednesday (coincidence Patsy) it's a female and I would hope that she won't be in season but maybe that would be useful. Don't really know how neutered male dogs react. Has there been any local paper coverage ? Also do you think 'Substantial Reward' would bring anybody out of the woodwork ? No Dl helper or genuine dog lover would take a reward from anybody that had had the terrible trauma of losing their dog but maybe if a reward was mentioned in the local paper ? Papers always seem more interested if the story involves heartbroken children as well.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We've been around Ockham/Wisley this morning but no joy.  Going to walk around the Mill at Byfleet tomorrow as my friend knows that bit like the back of her hand! It backs onto the woods/golf course and she knows people who have dogs in that area.  Hugo may get a little curious??? Got to go past Silvermere later this afternoon so will pop in there.  Have been advised that the golf course is actually out of bounds for dog walkers but think they're turning a blind eye at the moment as long as it doesn't interefere with their game.   Oh Hugo, please give us some sort of indication of where you are!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Daughter's just been sick all over car, so I'll be home with her today rather than scouring the woods. Jan, please feel free to ring me directly and we can chat about locations.  I'll be in touch with Patsy who is looking after a bitch who's just come into season -- may be worth a try even though Hugo's neutered? PiperPup's wandering the woods far and wide on the lookout, THANK YOU. And I'll ring round RSPCA etc to remind them Hugo's still missing. My family is showing signs of neglect and would rather I spent a bit of time with them rather than every waking hour searching for Hugo.  I am SO TORN, but will have to divide my time this week and pray for another sighting soon! Will definitely walk around Ockham again thru the week, always a hope that Hugo might just be wandering around and as it's sandy has to be one of the few places that isn't knee deep in mud. I know where the golf course is at Silvermere having driven past it many times. Is it possible to walk with dogs around there ? Where do you park, in the golf club ? Also wondering whereabouts is it that your 'friendly fox feeder' visits ? Never thought of it as a place that you could walk with dogs. Paula, you can e mail the area you've been 'staking out' at night if you prefer not to put it on site. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Paula mentioning Merlins story reminded me how, after numerous sightings all over the area, he was eventually found not far from the  place that he ran off.  So I've just come back from walking my dogs for miles over Ockham Common, just hoping and hoping. Lots of posters there and even those that have suffered a bit of rain damage still quite legible.  Do hope it's not so cold for you tonight, all our positive thoughts will be with you. x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Exhausted and slightly demorialzed but grateful for all the superb help and support, thank you Paula, PiperPup, everyone (perhaps I'll meet you Jan and Patsy one of these days, hopefully to introduce Hugo). Sat a long time after Oxshott fiasco in the field where 2nd fox samaratin feeds nightly, and where we saw shiny eyes the night before that may have been Hugo's. I stayed till about half nine but no shiny eyes this time other than fox eyes. My children want to help me search so will return today and show them around and sit out at fox feeding time, but don't think they'll stand the cold for as many hours as I have been doing. But will keep everything crossed that their little voices will lure our pup out. More posters and replaced posters and reminders all extremely appreciated.  I couldn't do all this on my own and am deeply appreciative. I do have confidence we'll get Hugo home, just a matter of time...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

How devastating for you. A couple of days ago when I was on Epsom Downs with my dogs  a  GSP that looked the double of Hugo was running round, bounding up to everybody and dashing off again. Eventually managed to get IT to come to me, triumphantly made a big fuss, heart pounding thrilled to bits and then realised IT was a her. To cut a long story short she was with a golfer on the course up there who was staring at me rather aggresively from some distance away. We had a nice chat as I explained why I had his dog on the lead ! What is it with this breed and golf courses ?  Wonder if she could have been the escapee from Oxshott.  Sorry I haven't been able to do more, due to family commitments I'm not a very 'free agent' at the moment. Will hope to get over to that area today and poster wherever I can.  Have noticed that some posters have been damaged by rain and will need replacing. So far this has been where there were plent of other poster nearby so don't panic, but worth bearing in mind if anyone is out and about and able to check. Thanks for being such a wonderful friend to Hugo and his mum Paula, I expect you've told her about Yiftaki, we have to make Hugo as famous.....  x   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Last night we had our hopes raised and dashed again. As I was sat catching up with Hugos owner she got a call quickly followed by a second call saying that Hugo was running around a road in Oxshott - the 2 ladies that called had seen him dashing around in the road and had been busy slwoing traffic as he wouldnt come near. We were so excited on our way over there, talking of Hugo being home for the weekend etc. We arrived and they thought that with the help of another helper they had him shut in a garden. We looked all around but no sign. We then discovered that in a garden backing onto the garden where the dog was shut in was a GSP - but it wasnt Hugo, it was a female. We went around to check in the house and sure enough she had escaped and it was her that had been running in the road. Gutted doesnt even come close to my feelings on this, I was so sure it must have been him. Im so sorry it wasnt him. Come on Hugo, I saw last night just how much your mum needs you back. Please please show yourself xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Saw lots of posters and put one up at the Wyevale Garden Centre, at Addlestone.  Sounds encouraging there is an area that he knows he can find food, hopefully he will stick around there. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spent all day in the woods searching again today. Dusted the area I suspect Hugo frequents with contents of hoover bag, which was very interesting to two guest GSPs who came to cheer me up today. Hugely grateful, PiperPup! So I am sure the smells are good, just need to get him to show again. Interestingly, met a 2nd person who feeds foxes daily in the vicinity, so now know of two convenient food sources for Hugs.  And this second spot is exactly where Paula sighted Hugo on Tuesday! Very exciting connection. Stood on watch with Paula and fox samaritan at feeding time and the foxes didn't show, they've been staying away a bit last few days, so we think it may be due to Hugo's presence. Something came along by the shrubs whose eyes reflected the torch light, certainly bigger than a fox, maybe our shy boy but coudln't tell for sure...  Wondering if I need to focus my time (and my collection of hoover bag and foody smells) in this area rather than first fox feeding site? Experts, please weigh in... Will be back out there tomorrow after school run.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have spent most of last 24 hours in the area, scented the area repeatedly, (thank you everyone for cups of tea!) had his bed, blanket, and bowl with smelly food out for him, along with something of mine and the kids to sniff, will bring hoover bag tomorrow. Walked all around, talked to all the landowners, local businesses, workers, golfers, dog walkers etc handed out posters and kept vigil...  Will return tomorrow too. In addition to Paula's firm sighting, the vet of Katz Castle also saw Hugo yesterday. (Plus I met someone today who saw him as he crossed the A3 on the 12th, which coincides with the police report.) Since Hugo still seems spooked, turning tail each time he sees someone, I think we'd best not call his name or try to capture him just yet.  But of course ring me with any sightings and I will happily go sit and call quietly and hope he peeps out and comes close. Again, thank you everyone for your help, sage advice, sense of humour, and encouragement! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It's great that you've had such a positive sighting of Hugo.   You now need to keep him in the golf course area - put down some nice smelly food, perhaps pilchards, also some item of your clothing which he will associate with you and will help keep him in the area.  Then if he's seen there again (?posters in the golf club?) perhaps you could get permission from the golf club people to put down a cage with some food and bedding - even get a trap if it can be manned.  Keep safe in the meantime Hugo - and let yourself be found, it's much better at home.

Been 'tuning' in since the early hour hoping for a good news update, only wish I was able to actually get over there. How frustrating to see him Paula, but at least you were able to shout him away from the road.  Can only hope he will stay around the golf course, it's going to be a dry day I think so should be lots of golfers and now they know about him you will hopefully get more sightings.  Assume the pet cemetery know as well (sorry to mention that) is Katz Castle along that road that leads to Brooklands ?, I've heard of it but never seen it. I've sent details to family in Addlestone that travel that road to Epsom every day.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went over after work last night and drove around with Audrey but we saw nothing. Left Audrey and went to Sivermere Golf course to make sure they have posters and the greenkeepers are on the lookout for Hugo. The as I drove out on my way home I looked out across the golf course and saw him!! He was running towards the main road in rush hour so I shouted his name trying to distract him - he stopped, looked at me and then ran back towards Cats castle (and away from the road thankfully!). Met owner and showed her where I had seen him - she walked around for hours last night but sadly no luck. She went back there this morning before light and is walking around looking for Hugo. Posters through letterboxes, chats with farmers, landowners, and nearby stables, and forrester of Cobham Park. My husband and I walked round farmlands pastures and small wood Hugo had run towards and saw loads of tasty rabbits and possible shelter, not to mention miles of land he could access if feeling pioneering. Thank you Paula, Perry, Audrey, Jan, Deborah, Ros etc etc for all your help so far! I think expanding the search is wise now, in case he's moved on again. Fetcham, or beyond, is certainly not too far as there's a cat from Fetcham who turns up regularly in Downside. South may be logical as the river is fairly deep now and borders to the north of Cobham Park and Stoke d'Abernon.  But perhaps crossing river is easy? I am happy for help in any and every direction!!! Many thanks again. My heart is with Hugo, where ever he is...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked for ages on Bookham Common today tried to put up posters at all places where people would come on to the common, besides the car park, which I saw you have absolutely smothered ! Brilliant. Spoke to loads of people some aware some not (they are now) horseriders said they'd keep a look out, one really nice girl who actually lives right on the common and goes out riding her horse every day, has all his details. Postered over by the allotments, riding stables and along the road that leads up to Bookham Grange Hotel, saw your posters in the common car park. I'd run out by the time I got to the Hotel, might be worth e mailing them if you can (and haven't already)  just thinking if he is in that area the smell of the kitchens that wafts around there might interest him.  If the possible sighting was him near Cobham Sainsburys, then in one direction from there is the Cobham International School (e mail ?), lots of grounds round there and a riding stables along that road .Lots of woodland leading up to WestEnd Village, Garsons Farm are always very helpful with displaying posters. Thinking in another direction altogether has anyone postered around Ripley ? I've sent details to dog walking friends in Fetcham and asked them to spread the word, there is a car park for Bookham Common on the road from Fetcham to Stoke d'Abernon don't know if it is postered ? I could get there tomorrow if not.  Saw loads of your posters around the area. I should be able to get out with some tomorrow. Will wait and hear what area others are going to get to and then decide where is best to go, hopefully you will have another sighting very soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

These sightings are very encouraging, what a brilliant job you've done with postering and spreading the word.  Bookham Common would certainly be a nice big and safer area for him to be, will hope to walk there with my dogs today. Unfortunately the rangers there are extremely hostile to posters, I've found that even if I've spoken to one and he has said ok another Ranger will take them straight down, and be quite nasty about it too ! Lots of horseriders there, particularly today, if it's not too soggy for them.  Everything crossed for good news very soon. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Postered in and around Sainsbury's Cobham, the 1st possible sighting did not materialize. Friends put a posting on GumTree, covered Effingham and Oxshott rail stations, emailed posters to United Reform Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and some running clubs and put some posters up round Bookham Common. Drift Golf club not done. At end of day fri I got a call with a much firmer sighting from Thu night about midnight near Downside Common. RAin pelting down shortened my vigil tonight, but will return tomorrow to poster and search... It would not be too difficult for Hugo to find his way under the M25 to make it to Bookham Common as Bookham Rd very quiet road leads there from where he was spotted. May need more help for postering Bookham common area please. Lots of farmland off Horseley Road I will focus there. But he may head to Cobham Park so help there would be greatly appreciated too! A million thanks to all of you!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unfortunately I've got to be somewhere else for most of the day, but will take posters with me and get to this area tomorrow.  Are the farmers markets on today at Cobham (Leg o Mutton fields) ? and whenever the Ripley one is, they would be good places to cover.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went and met Hugos owner yesterday to help with posters etc. The area where he could have gone is massive but lots of posters are already up and more will be going up this weekend in a wider area as no sightings since Monday. Traffic police have taken a poster for their staff room and lots of walkers I spoke to already knew about Hugo. Stay safe Hugo, everyone misses you xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've been back daily and nightly til midnight looking, calling, scenting the area where Hugo was lost, which was Ockham Common in KT11, putting up more posters, around and further afield. Have visited local farms and stables and riding schools as well as residents... A farmer may have seen him yesterday but I didn't. Identichip has promised to email his poster with photo to all vets and DWs in 20 mile radius. Running an ad in the local paper, the Cobham news or somesuch. Thank you again to Pete the Dog!!! All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Owner, sorry to see Hugo is missing.  Thanks for sending his detail to DL, we will do all we can to help you in your search.  Great you have supplied photo/s of him.  You need to poster poster poster the area as much as possible, we cannot stress enough the importance of the postering.  Posters can be printed by selecting Dog Poster 1 just above Dog Information (you must be logged in).    Contact DW's, rescues, vets and leave a poster (you can find vets in the area by clicking on the logo right hand side just underneath Latest Missing photo).  Dogs can be rehomed after 7 days, try and visit rescues do not rely on phone calls alone.  Great he is Chipped do contact the Chip Co and report him missing and check your details are up to date.  Please update us on who has been contacted i.e. DW's etc and if you have started postering.  You can leave a comment by selecting  Add a comment  just above Comments.  Good luck and hope he is found soon.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
