was reading your story and it is very upsetting that he has been gone so long i lost my 8 month old staffie arli on sat 22 jan 11 but luckily we believe he is now in the care of a dog warden and will find out tomorrow 24 jan 11 i really do feel for you has i have been a so worried (he doesn't like the cold etc) and it was only 1 day so i can't begin to imagine how you feel. as non dog owners don't understand that it is like havin another child my children were very upset wen arli ran off and as we still have to wait till monday i have to keep them grounded to the fact it may not be him but am quietly praying that it is him i have read story's on here of pets reunited after a year or so, so just don't give up and we are all wishing you the best of luck and wishing it won't be much longer before jacob is home with you x

To echo Jo's post, I also am really impressed with how hard you have worked to try to find Jacob - I only have a fraction of an idea of what you have been through as Ruby was only missing for 3 weeks and that was hard enough. I live near Bridgend in South Wales and I'm on the look out, I'd never heard of the breed before but will be keeping my eyes peeled wherever I go. I hope you get your happy ending. x

Dearest Jacob, always in our thoughts. As someone told me when Milo was missing, we have to 'Keep the Faith'...maybe if we all try that, he will appear one day and return to his lovely family. Take care young man xxxx

Jon and Shelley, I am so sad for you that the second 'anniversary' is upon us with no news on Jacob. There are so many people that admire your utter determination and hard work, I do for one, and are just willing and wishing there was some news and for that very long awaited happy ending. Thinking of you. Hugs to Jacob whereever you are boy. x

Now that the Bracco in Bracknell has been cleared from the search could we ask helpers to remove anyposters put up in that area. Thank you.
BonBon
Hi John. It was good to speak with you on Sunday. Although it is good you have been able to eliminate the sightings, and remove some of my niggling thoughts, it is sad that Jacob's return seems no closer. As promised, I have checked with my vet and although they no longer have your poster (only keep them for 6 months), they have assured me that all new dogs are checked for microchip. My printer is currently not working but when it is I will get another poster into them. If I can be of any help at any time, you have my number so please don't hesitate to call me. Carole

Hi All

I have just had confirmation that the 2nd sighted Bracco is not Jacob. This has been confirmed for us by Jacob's breeder. It is a Bracco that has a full tail and has been owned by it's owners since puppyhood.
Thanks for everyone's support.
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
Earlier posts edited to block out location of the 2 now accounted for braccos as owners do not want to advertise to the world where they walk their dogs for their own safety. I f any posts missed please email admin@doglost.co.uk or press report button on that post. Thank you.
braccoboy
Thanks for your lovely posts everyone and your emails of support, .....what would we do without you ??

Bridget, the dog in question in Hastingwood could easily have been mistaken for Jacob, and we are ever grateful for people like yourselves who take time to alert us to these dogs that could be Jacob, - it could have been him, and for that we are eternally grateful for the calls.

One day it will be him - ....we hope.

The lovely lady who had seen a man walking a Bracco in Berkshire area saw the man again yesterday and got chatting, he was very nice and said that the 3 yr old (?) Bracco he was aware of in Berkshire(called Louis) was not know directly by him, but by his wife who met this dog at puppy classes ??? We can't work out why a 3yr old Bracco would be at puppy classes though, unless it was back for basic training perhaps (which Jacob wouldn't ordinarily need, unless had been kept in difficult circumstances perhaps)

I'm now going to speak to the breeder of the puppy of this man, as I know who that is, and see if she can find out any more information for me as she will obviously have a closer relationship to the owners than the lady who met him on her walks.

I'll let you know if anything else unfolds.

Thanks again for keeping a lookout for our boy.

Oh Shelley and Jon, we are so sorry this did not materialise into your beautiful boy.. Please know you are always in our hearts and thoughts.. I firmly believe that you have to go through this experience to truly feel the pain it causes. Everyday I think about our 'missing' boy Milo and what happened to us in July. We were so very lucky and believe that someone was watching over him during his little 'adventure'. To have him back is a bonus everyday and so my Christmas wish for you this year is a happy ending and your lovely boy sat with you on Christmas morning.... We have a strange bond between us now and it will remain strong for as long as it takes to get your boy home and hopefully beyond... take care Cathy, Nigel, Lola and Milo xxx

Somebody must know something, always in my thoughts Jacob, stay safe and we will find you one day
braccoboy
Thanks to everyone for their support these past few weeks.
It's become apparent from a lady that has been very helpful when Jacob first went missing, and who lives nearby to the Hastingwood sightings.
It's now clear that the dog seen is not Jacob.
It's a pointer that is known to go off and find itself in other peoples gardens, and this lady has taken it home before, it wanders for miles.
It's brown and white, so could clearly be taken for Jacob for anyone not knowledgable in the breed.
As always though, these sightingn are best followed up, and postered. We never will give up on our boy.
Nearly 2 years on now, how I wish we could turn back the clocks to that fateful day.
He would still be here now :o(((
Still....we'll keep looking and hoping.
Thanks again to everyone for keeping our boy current and in your thoughts as you travel about the UK.
Also thinking of Ffion and Tim who have lost labrador Sky, it's coming up to their 2 year 'anniversary' (hate using that word, it's so not a celebration)
Makes you wonder just what does happen to these dogs - where do they go ?

Hi, have been to CB6 today, have postered the area and have given Jacob's poster to several people both living in the area and as far afield as Northumberland. These people all seem to remember Jacobs disappearance and were all amazed the search has so far come to nothing. I visited a park in the Littleport area, you know what its like, you just hope and pray you just stumble upon this little man and you dream of smacking some bastard in the mouth and asking questions later, or is that just me ? I would so much give anything to see your boy back with you. Don't know if you remember when there was a possible sighting of him in Bromley/Beckenham, well I still do a quick tour of that area when I'm close by but I've never seen a Bracco, or anything slightly resembling one in the area. In fact they are so rare it's hard to believe he's not been spotted, but I do feel it's just a case of being in the right place at the right time. Sorry, I rambling a bit, but please don't give up, my thoughts are with you. Best regards. x

Good to know people are wanting to help, yes please Heidi to offering info to the dog show people. Please take care travelling, it's pretty snowy here right now and the further south you go it's worse.
I'll let you know of any developments on either 'sightings' soon as we hear of anything.

Hallo. I've not added anything to Jacob's file for nearly a year now, but that is not to say I've forgotten him. I try not to get excited about recent events and I am in Kent, not the area to be of any help. However I shall be in CB6 on Sunday at a dog show, bearing in mind you don't want to "flood the market" with posters, would you like me to poster/hand out posters ?
Jarvis Cocker
I also have been following Jacob's story from the day he went missing and reading his blog, I often check on his page to see if there has been any developments, I hope and pray that something comes of the latest possible sightings of him.
Danielle
fingers crossed for you xx

Evening everyone

We've just got in, posted the area which is actually called Hastingwood, and all the surrounds we could.
Walked a few of the lanes that seemed to throw off into areas that looked dog walking areas, boy it was
C-O-L-D !
So, all we can do now is wait and see if any of the locals can spot this dog and confirm that it's like Jacob.
We can do no more.
We were going to put some posters up around the M11 points leading into and out of the M11 south/northbound exits/entries, but having had a deep discussion about this, and knowing that non locals would see if as well, we decided, for now, we'll refrain from doing so.
After the many fruad calls, and upsets that went hand in hand with them, we're keen to avoid Joe Bloggs and his hoaxes at this point. I hope that makes sense and doesn't come across as being nonchalent. It took a lot to get over a lot of that emotional rollercoaster, and we're keen to avoid that again.
That said any other sightings and we'll be there of course.
Thanks to everyone for their kind words and their hope, we too have that hope - there have been stories ending happily, and we were told it could be a time issue with Jacob, maybe our downfall was too much publicity and that made him too hot to give back without repercussions ? Hmmm who knows, I guess you can only do what you feel is right at the time. I don't know we'd go that route now......hard to say.
Now we wait, hope.......Will let you know if we hear any more news.
Thank You to you all for everything - glad you are all there to help and offer us support.
Shelley

Posted and shared details on FACEBOOK, Come on Jacob, time to come home!
braccoboy
Hi All

Well, it's been a busy few days.....
We've (as some will already know) had 2 possibles for Jacob in as many days.
Both are credible sightings/information.
One is in the Hastingwood (Harlow)area.... a dog has been visiting a families garden for 2 weeks on and off, and they have kindly been offering it food, trying as best they can to get him/her to come to them. They have tonight looked at our website and blog and feel very sure it's a dog not disimilar to Jacob in looks/size etc.
The family have seen him near roads, and running full pelt across fields. He/she seems very skittish and frightened when approached.
Many scenarios are playing out for us as you can imagine.
There are many places that could have decided (should it be Jacob) that he was no longer of use for breeding, and he had served his purpose by now (you know who I mean) - or he could simply have slipped the place he was.
Maybe he/she is actually someone elses dog, and as importantly, he/she should be reunited with them.
Sadly though, he/she has not been reported to any authority dog warden or rescue/police etc which makes me wonder, could it be our boy ?
We will be visiting the area tomorrow in an attempt to flood out posters, and ask around/lookat the area. We both work, so time is limited, so any helpers in that immediate area who could post first thing would be greatly appreciated.
Again, the weather is as of Jan 2009, wet, snowy and freezing, not ideal for a lost dog, but I know they can make provision, and can and do survive.
Doesn't stop me worrying though.

The 2nd information is that a lady in Lower Early, near Reading area has seen and spoken to a dog walker who has a young Bracco, they got talking, her saying about the breed, the man was amazed she knew the breed and he asked how she knew of them. She replied about looking for Jacob the Bracco who'd been missing since Jan 2009, and he replied there had been a Bracco, owned by a man locally, and that he acquired the dog around the very same time Jacob went missing.
Could it be him >?
The lady in question has alrady seen the man again today (with said puppy) and will try to ask for more information about the man with the older Bracco as she gains his confidence -
She of course doesn't know the man at all well, so would understandably find it awkward to ask questions too quickly, something I too would find understandably hard.

Hmmmm......this is all very hard to take, as Jacob can't be in two places at once, we realise that, but we will follow up both equally, and eliminate them but hopefully find out whose dog (if it's not our boy) the wanderer is - being out in -3 must be shocking for the poor thing no matter how bad he/she had it before.

Wish us luck, and Thank You as always for all of your lovely posts and support.
I'll report back tomorrow of any progress.

There has been another possible sighting of Jacob Margaret Roding in Essex. It is reported as a fairly large white/orange dog it is thought to have been around that area for about 2 weeks and is going into the garden of the person who has reported it.They are feeding the dog and tried to catch it but it seems to be wary and disappears,at first they thought it could have been a foxhound and checked all the local hunts none of them have had any missing,so watch this space while we make further inquiries. Hi All

Having asked the Bracco people I know, they assure me there are quite a number of Bracco that could quite happily be mistaken for Jacob, mature dogs, as well as a few youngsters matching his 'look'.
I guess until anyone else see's the dog in question and perhaps has the courage to ask about him, we can do little more than hope.
Needle and haystack comes to mind sadly.
For a moment there we thought....maybe, just maybe, but will never cease to hope that phone call will eventually come.
Thank You to everyone still looking for our boy.
Not a single day goes by without us thinking about him and wondering WHY us ?
To know others remember him just makes us very grateful indeed.
braccoboy
Just had an email from friends in Ireland who have bred a litter a few years ago. They had boy who was sold to owners living in Doncaster, that's (according to Google maps) 18 miles away from Pontefract so a possibility. They are going to see if they can locate a photo (recent) of the dog so Jytte, if you would be willing to pm me your email addy (mine is haggerwoods@aol.com) just in case you could spot anything that stands out from seeing the photo
Thanks
Shelley
braccoboy
Thank You for getting in touch Jytte.

There aren't many Bracco around the UK, but there are enough for them to be noticed now.

I'm trying now to find out if there are any Bracco who live or have holidayed in that area in the time you said.

Do you remember if it was male, entire? excat colouring perhaps ? I guess if anyone had Jacob now, he could have been castrated making it difficult to know male or female at a distance, but the markings might help ?

Shame that when the magazines listed him nothing came through then, we had hoped it would.

We'll never give up hope, one day that call may come. Time heals that open wound of him going, but sometimes it's reopened and you realise exactly what you had and lost. I just wish people if they have him (and now love him like their own) could appreciate that feeling and at least let us know he's ok, albeit even anonomously.

Coming up for 2 years in January and sometimes it's just as raw as the very first weeks.
Just last week was his 5th Birthday, the second one we've celbrated wondering where he is.

Jon and I just hope he is safe, loved and cared for as much as he would be here.

Please let us know any more information, or if anyone knows of his whereabouts please, please let us know.
We would never judge anyone for having him, maybe bought or passed on to new owners who are not aware of his missing circumstances.
To know he was happy, alive, thriving instead of that whole awful set of what if's, well to know he was happy soemwhere it would be priceless.

Thank You

Shelley

Only just thought about it today, but last week when I was walking home in Pontefract, West Yorks, ( I know a long way from Essex), I saw 3 people walking a BI, and thought it an unusual dog for our small town. Anyway, if and when I see them again, they cannot live too far from me, I will investigate further. I think it had smaller patches on the sides, but truely cannot remember. Jytte

Hello, I've just read the posts on your dog search, I cant believe that he has been missing for so long and that no one has seen him or handed him in it seems to strange. Hi, just wanted to add that I am still looking for Jacob in the area that was mentioned by the lady who thought she may have seen him in a park with a man in the south east of London around August last year.  You may remember the actual location was moved from the site.  Although a very painful year has past, I just hope and pray that each day that goes by is another day closer to finding this beautiful boy.  I will ALWAYS keep looking for him, wherever I am; and I'm sure there are hundreds of others like me, keeping my eyes open for him.  With much love. I have followed Jacobs thread from the begining - can't believe it's a year already - my love and best wishes to everyone involved in the search for him and I truly hope that your perserverance pays off and one day you get him back where he belongs.  Will be raising a glass to Jacob and his Mum and Dad tonight - my thoughts are with youLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

One year on and I am so saddened that Jacob is still not home. The efforts and lengths that Jon and Shelley (and the Ginger Army!) have gone to throughout their search for Jacob has been amazing, they so deserve that ginger boy back home and tucked up under his duvet! I know the one year anniversary of Jacob missing would have been a tough day for Jon and Shelley, like every other day in the past year that this nightmare has gone on for. They so desperately want their boy back. Thinking of you and sending lots of hugs. x Bumped to top for 1yr anniversary.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hoping and praying that this brings results. I still follow Jacob on here and on his blog and Shelly and Jon could not have done more to find their beloved Jacob. Well done everyone for getting Jacob in the Telegraph. What a wonderful early Christmas present it would be if this brings Jacob home. I for one am wishing just that and I know many many othes are too.

Hi. Sometimes i do believe I am psychic! Havn't checked on Dog Lost in the past week (work & all that) but sitting down this evening my thoughts strayed to Jacob and wondering as I know you do, where is this boy and wouldn,t you want to know, even if the news were not what you are hoping for. Two things. so glad you have a puppy, goes without saying he is not a replacement for Jacob, just another special person in your life. And so glad you located the Plymouth Bracco. I flagged him up after seeing him whilst visiting my daughter in Plympton and have wondered 'what if' ever since. I send my love to you all. Jenny MLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There will be an article in tomorrow's Daily Telegraph Weekend Section, Sat 14th Nov, featuring Doglost and Jacob......so posted and bumped so you can all be ready to rush out and get a copy first thing tomorrow! Jon and Shelley's dedication in their search for Jacob, and the fantastic efforts they went to organising and running the joint fundraiser event for Ollie's Fund (research in to canine epilepsy) and Doglost, gave the reporter, Chris (thank you Chris!) a real insight into Doglost, the support and importance of all its helpers/partnersips with organisations and of course the heartache owners of lost dogs go through.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I’ve just seen this advert. I don’t know if it’s worth following up?
Hello all Animal lovers!  I have (not in my possesion) an Bracco Italiano dog that needs rehoming.  It is still with owner and they are wanting him gone as soon as possible.  I have been given a task to help find him a new home. Now can anyone help me to do this the best way possible.  Any help on rehoming tips would be most helpful. We are based in Surrey Nr Croydon.  We dont really want him to go into a animal shelter, and would prefer him to have a loving home which he soooooooooo deserves.  He is going to be 5 in November,  I am trying to get more info and photos so please bare with me.  I think it is NOT neutered.  He is not in the best condition, but I dont think it is anything medical, he needs a good clean up, nails clipped and loads of cuddles and excersise.  He has been bought up with little kids, and he is most freindly with little ones, soft and soppy!.  Not sure on other dogs or cats...probably a safe bet to say no to other dogs or cats.   He is big and droopy, and neglected.  Needs walks which my friends daughter does now and again for a favour to the ownerbut its not her responsibility....He needs a regular responsible owner who loves dogs especially big dogs who still has loads of energy pent up and waiting to be used! Can ANY one help or does anyone know of a safe home or can someone give me some guidence as to the best way to get a dog rehomed.  Also do you think I should do home checks...he is a big dog and I dont want him going to a similar situation. Look forward to any replies on this!  Thank you very much in advance!  By the way I live in Hastings, so all correspondance is going to methen I have to get info down to Surrey!  We do have transport if we need to bring him to sussex. Hi Everyone, Sorry this has taken so long to get around to, we only got home late last night after being in the North all week then to Yorks to collect our new Bracco Puppy, who of course is adorable, and has made us smile more than anything else could have after a horrendous 8 months. I can hardly beleive it’s 8 months, just shocking. How can a striking dog like Jacob be not spotted in this time is beyond mestill we will always carry on the campaign to locate him, never ever will we give up hope. Thanks to those who have been eagle eyed and reported any Bracco they spotted to us. We have accounted the Plymouth Bracco - so that’s good to know that you are still watching out for our beautiful boy. Thanks to everyone who came and made our fundraising day a huge success- some of you travelled for miles to be with us and for that alone we are grateful. Was so nice to put faces to names from here and know that we all relate to each other knowing who we are now ! As everyone has said, the day was perfect, about 30 people more than we anticipated joined us making there about 90 adults there and about 70+... the food was down to a grain of rice by 2pm !! I hope everyone got fed EEEEK! Most of all the sun shone, the dogs romped happily without a blip, and everyone dipped into their already strained pockets and gave to raise the roof on what we ever dreamed of making. Thank YOU to you all, and we know we can only hope the fantastic Chris and ever happy to please photographer from the Telegraph will do us all proud this Saturday (is it this Saturday Jayne?) with their article...I am chomping at the bit to see it ! Oh and our local newspaper covered the story too. http://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/Launch.aspx?referral=other&pnum=&refresh=9r0J1Kp8Q20i&EID=2014f35f-4a30-4621-b3bb-aab1aef071ee&skip=true And for those wanting to see more photo’s - A friend of a friend Rebecca very kindly agreed to letting us use her album to view http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/rebeccy.a/SpinoneParty?feat=email# Back soon everyone, and meanwhile, please keep the Jacob campaign in your mind, please, please keep spreading the word about him xx      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi everyone. I have followed Jacob's story from the beginning and always keep my eyes peeled wherever I am. I live in Yorkshire but this week am down in Devon staying with my daughter. Today, driving out of Plymouth towards Plympton, along the embankment, I spotted a Bracco - definately a Bracco. I tried to turn around to perhaps 'admire' him/her but volume of traffic (bank holiday Monday) wouldn't allow it. I don't intend to raise any hopes at all but felt I should at least flag up this sighting in this area. Good luck. Jenny MLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

One of the best afternoons we've had in a long time, Baggage (Jack Russell) slept for hours and hours and I would love to know what he was dreaming about. We (Brodie, Bailey and Henry shelties and I) also had a lovely afternoon. It was lovely to meet all you doglost folks and I wore my polo shirt to an agility show yesterday, with pride (and handed out some of the cards!) How inspirational it was to see Jacob's owners getting on with life and doing something positive by organising the party and raising money for Ollie's Fund and doglost. The shelties were a little outnumbered, but Bailey managed to get a 4th place in the most handsome dog!!      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

can only say the same  again what a wonderful day- must have been well over 100 adults plus around 20 children and well over 50 dogs all loose playing togther in a wonderful safe walled garden- and not one punch up all day ( from the dogs i meant!!) I know my dog got home and just fell asleep hardly wanting to get up again!! Shelly and Jon were wonderful and it was great to meet the rest of your pack. Everyone had a lovely time and again its amazing that they have done this to raise funds shared between doglost and ollies fund ( for cannine epilepsey) Thank you once again to Shelly and Jon- heres hoping the publicity brings a much deserved reunion.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It was lovely to meet up with everyone in such a great place (and with great hosts!). THANK YOU Jon and Shelley for your considerable donation to DogLost as a result of Ollie's Party, it is very much appreciated by all of us. There was one 'person' missing from the party of course, and that is Jacob. I hope that the anticipated publicity really does bring that long awaited call, or at the very least raise awareness for your boy once again on a national level. Buy tickets from here - http://www.adoredpaws.com/page34.htm Or as Jayne said, give Shelley a call. Hi everyone Just dropping in to update a possible new lead which is being followed up It's a lead none the less, and for that we are ever grateful for people calling us and alerting us. This way we can raise our very own search and ask about the Bracco owners and breeders for dogs that might have been in that same area. I will let you know the outcome if the lady calls back, she said she would do that and let us know one way or another, so I hope she will. She owns a Springer herself and sounded really nice. More good news is that Doglost founder Jayne has managed to get some publicity through an article to be compiled for the review pages of the Telegraph newspaper. Jayne will be interviewed at our fundraising party (Ollie's Fund Party on 29th August at Audley End CB11) - the journalist and photographer will write about how we all rally to promote our causes for our beloved dogs, and to be able to promote the fabulous work Doglost does in reuniting our lost dogs, as well as fundraise and be able to donate monies all on the same day, well what a great day it will be. Look out for the spread in the Telegraph :-))))) or let me know if you are able to support us and come along and let your dogs enjoy a fun day out (with you too !) UPDATE: due to jacob's owners mission of spreading the word..we actualy got very excited this week with a possible sighting at Heathrow airport. Security guards were FANTASTIC and looked through CCTV footage...spitting image Of Jacob but sadly not...another Bracco owner came forward and said it was her mums dog that had gone to the airport with her, So Jacobs owners have now had dozens of possibles due to their ongoing campaign...one day it will be Jacob.   The system is working and they check out every lead. Sadly not this one. BUT it will happen for them one day!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Please don't give up hope. I posted on your site way back when, telling you how my dog was gone for 18 months, and in that time I had what I thought was her, but she died. Shelley dont give up hope.  I know how hard it is.  Chelsea has been missing since Feb 08.  You will see from her site that it was quiet for ages and then we have had another possible sighting.  This GSD is very much like my girl but we dont think it is her.  But it has brought her back into peoples minds.  Like you we sit and wonder just where she is - we wondered if hit by car and just wandered off to die.  Being GSD who lived out also would adapt to being out quickly.  Or is she curled up on someones sofa whilst we are out all hours and weather looking !  Like you it would just be nice to know and have some peace.  Our thoughts are with you.  x x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Shelley - what can I say.  Reading about Jacob and your exemplarly efforts to bring him home always fill me with awe. No one could do more than you have done - and continue to do.  If ever a happy-ending is deserved - it is for you all and Jacob. I hope that he is alive and well - fending for himself (I recently heard about a greyhound that lived wild for 8 years before being recently re-captured) or is being loved and cherished by someone unaware of the hunt for him. I pray that your efforts are rewarded - soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 19th June  21.17pm   Can hardly believe it's June - where have all those month's gone, through this search we've gone through 5" of snow to spring, and now summer (well summerish!) Just all flying by so quickly. There's not much I can tell you all apart form what's on the blog, we are desperately trying to reach the press, and get some much needed press attention. Just waiting now for someone to 'bite'. There's much thoughts for us both on whether he was shot early on for pestering farm game, or maybe even the deer he was chasing, thing is with Jacob he was cossetted as a dog, very gentle natured really, not a dog that would go all out to kill, maybe after a few days hungry yes, but the early days I would think he'd have just been really angry he could make his way home. Could he have been shot, mistakenly, can you mistakenly shoot anything- hmmm I think not ? I don't know, just when we really sit and think about it all(and that's often I have to say!) we cannot believe that us being out from 1/2hr after he was lost, and then for the next 3 weeks driving and walking, sometimes en mass, how could he not be being seen by someone ? I just don't understand. I would say we live in a pretty good area, and that the chances of someone around us picking him up and NOT passing him on to us or the vets etc is low. That said if he strayed far - who knows. With regards to gypsies, wouldn't they have called for the ?1000 ? He is too hot to handle by now - and that in itself has fear of backlashes with us, purely as would someone intending to 'do' stuff with him, get cold feet and get rid of him as best they could, however they felt it necessary without causing any attention to themselves ? So many theories, unanswered questions. We have had to almost realise we may never see our gorgeous boy again, it hurts too much,  raise hopes and as it is our hearts break when we sit and think of the loss of him. We just have to now wait, hope and do whatever we can to continue raising his profile. Let's hope someone out there if they did shoot him can anonomously even, let us know, put us out of our misery Thank You for the thoughts and emails, and also for offers of putting up for the papers, i'll have a think over the weekend how and what we could do, good to know you are out there, thinkng, helping, - it means heaps. Thanks again - keep your furbies safe please :-) Shelley  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Kath, the ’lady’ that fed Jon and Shelley a pack of lies, false sigtings of Jacob, and had them running back and forth to and from WGC, has now been charged with various counts of fraud and faces sentencing later this month. Details have now gone to press, and hopefully Jon and Shelley will also get some extra coverage off the back of it for their boy - got to get something out of this evil woman and what she did. This link should open the article. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g293/jot80/kath-1.jpg Please take a look incase you should recognise her or know of any owners of lost dogs who may have had dealings with her - if she did this to Jon and Shelley, nothing to say she hasn’t done the same to others. Sadly still no news on Jacob; Jon, Shelley and the ’Ginger Army’ are still working hard, keeping up awareness and doing all they can..waiting for that all important call. Please let it be soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Please see Shelley’s blog update today (2nd June) for the latest http://missingbraccojacob.blogspot.com/ As you will read the ’lady’ at WGC who rang with reported sightings and info, fed Shelley and Jon a pack of total lies. She has now been arrested and charged with several counts of fraud (unrelated to Jacob/Shelley/Jon) and is a complete crook. How could she do that to Jon and Shelley? Hi, I have followed your story, and I just want to briefly tell you my story. My lurcher went missing in July 2007, and after 6 weeks we 'found her' It was obvious the gipsies had had her, and I spent a lot of time and T.L.C. only to have her run into a metal post on December 14th 2007, and die. I was completly gutted, but life goes on.On December 30th 2008, I recieved a phone call from a rescue in Chesham( about 50 miles away) to say they had a lurcher bitch with my chip in her. After the complete disbelief, I realised that the dog I had brought home was identical, but not mine. So 18 months on, I was re-united with my dog. So never give up hope, miracles do happen. Wishing you lots of luck, LizLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I got the above from Google so you're right about Dale Farm being part of Crays Hill, Basildon. I do so hope your hard work brings him home really soon. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I had a drive around the area today, and parked at the shops and then took my dog for a walk around.  I thought I would be able to see more if I was not driving at the same time.  No luck I am afraid, but when time permits I will do the same again.  Hope there is news soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, my mum has been on this site over the past few weeks, we live in Warwickshire and has been filling me in on your story about Jacob. Good luck with finding him and he looks just the sweetest of dogs, i can't understand how you feel as i've never been in your situation before, but our hearts go out to you and i look forward to seeing a happy ending. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Update from Shelley....she was having trouble posting but wanted to give everyone who has been such a great support an update - I thought it was time for a little update on here, especially as we seem to have moved forward since the whole hoax phone calls some months back. I can hardle believe that its now 13 weeks since we last saw our gorgeous boy. It doesn't bear thinking about actually, and we try not to think of the time thats passed by, we just look forward in the sheer hope that our efforts to bring him to peoples attention will eventually bring him home. As many of you already know, we are still currently exploring some sightings of Jacobesque dog that was seen first a month ago by a lady dog walker in a park near Welwyn, Hertfordshire. After much exploring we haven't seen a dog like him yet and believe me we have been there for hours upon hours, varying times from 7.30am - midnight. Still it certainly doesn't mean he isn't there. We will find him. I just wish like Jo has reiterated, its not about him, its about the dog - nothing else. I wish if he is watching this update list, he would see that there's nothing awful about coming forward. Through powers of persuasion and keen helpers, we somehow managed to get an article run last week in Welwyn Times (15th April) telling the story about Jacob and that he'd possibly found his way to Welwyn, and maybe into the hands of an unsuspecting man who had bought him from travellers in "Dale Farm" Essex for ?100. Anyone know of a Dale Farm traveller camp - we only think we have it down as being nearby the huge Crays Hill site in Basildon area. Maybe this fella was working that way when he saw him tied up? As a result of the paper article, we had a few more calls stating that people had perhaps seen such a dog. All good of course, but we need to see this dog ourselves, see it is or isn't Jacob and then at least we could settle our dog home or move on with the campaign elsewhere. We are taking hours of our week driving back and forth to Welwyn currently, a 2hr trip before we even do anything, so if this is not Jacob we need to put that time and effort to good use looking or emailing elsewhere. Sometimes its frustrating not being able to spend all day there, wandering the parks and the lake on the off-chance we'll spot the dog, but we have to work both of us, we don't get paid otherwise, so short of winning the lottery we have no other choice. That said, there are some lovely people through groups or the blog that have volunteered to be our eyes when we can't be there, or flyer fellow dog walkers or poster. If anyone has friends or relatives that they can pass all Jacob's info and poster to in that area we'd be really grateful. Makes us feel less upset that we can't be there 24/7 even if we want to. So inconsiderate that we need to pay the bills!    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

continued We have the aptly named Ginger Army in place, and the 8 girls do a fabulous job (you know who you are!) helping co-ordinate the campaign, just sometimes we all need a boost with a sighting or a call to reward our hard work. I do try my best to update the blog which had followed our search from the beginning, so if you need any more information about Jacob, and perhaps get the finer details or more photos then you can check that here. http://missingbraccojacob.blogspot.com/ We’ve increased the reward to ?1000 for his safe return now, hopefully it’ll be the difference in calls, but so far nothing. Hope that brings you a little more up to date. Hoping all your lost dogs are back home soon. ShelleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have emailed Jacob's details to my niece who lives close to the QE2 hospital in WGC. She has spoken to her dog-owning friend whose husband is a policeman (he lives in WGC and is based nearby but not actually in WGC). My niece said her friend and husband were both aware and they are all keeping their eyes and ears open. Both my niece and her friend have children who we know would be good at spotting a big, 'new' distinctive dog being walked in their area. Fingers crossed!

Only just been able to get on here since the exciting news of a possible sighting. Please please let this be Jacob! Shelley and Jon and many of the ace ’Ginger Army’ spent yesterday afternoon and evening in WGC speaking to locals, handing out flyers etc. Fingers crossed tomorrow brings some more news. Shelley has updated Jacob’s blog with all the details - http://missingbraccojacob.blogspot.com/   Link direct to the WGC article below, thank you to Chris for running the story.   http://www.whtimes.co.uk/content/whtimes/news/story.aspx?brand=WHTOnline&category=News&tBrand=HertsCambsOnline&tCategory=newslatestWHT&itemid=WEED15%20Apr%202009%2017%3A15%3A18%3A050   As Shelley has stressed, if you should be reading this and know the man who has the Jacob like dog in WGC, or you indeed are this man, please rest assured that Shelley and Jon just want their dog back, they are not interested in anything else that has happened, where the dog came from etc, they just want their baby back home.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, I just wondered if the police in Herts have been contacted? There HQ is in Stanborough Road, near the lakes.  They also have a public website where appeals for help can be posted. I have seen previous appeals for lost/stolen dogs on there.  All police and police staff also view these appeals. www.herts.police.ukLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I got an email from Jo today and have given advice about leqafleting the first big Newmarket race meeting next week (Weds/ Thurs), pref with flyers, put on all the car windscreens in the car parks, and also by handing flyers to racegoers leaving the carparks. My instinct though is that he's been picked up by travellers - and there are a lot of camps in Essex and esp Cambridgeshire. I think it might pay to contact the max number of Traveller Liason officers in those counties (also NE Suffolk) and also to ring the Radio Essex Traveller programme which goes out early on a Sunday evening. It's a bit hard to follow the story as the posts don't come up in sequence! I'm not sure if Jacob has been posted on the gundogclub webiste, I've been neglecting my duties int ha trespect, just no time in the last year

Whereabouts in Welwyn Garden City was this man seen walking the dog?  I have friends who live in WGC and maybe they can keep an eye open and let me/you know if they see him.  There is a vets in WGC (the vet I use actually) - it may be an idea to give them a ring to see if the dog has been registered with them.  Their name is Attimores and the number is 01707 331963.  The fax number (if you wish to fax a poster) is 01707 393970.  Let me know if you would like me to pop a poster in to them.  If there are any more sightings of him in WGC let me know if there is anything I can do to help.  Good luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for your kind comments about Jacob and the whole Welwyn situation. Sadly so far we've not heard anything about this man nor has anyone seen him being walked. All very strange really. We're relighting the campaign as best we can, where do we go now ? We just will carry on emailing and looking for publicity - we ned to keep our gorgeous boy fresh in people minds, we don't want him to become a statistic. As strange as things go we actually found a lovely stray Lurcher x saluki yesterday DL ref 17817 - he was ambling along the back roads to our house and seemed lost and in pain as couldn't lie down. After much persuassion and sitting in the field (the things we do eh!) we gained his trust and he came to us. A lovely friendly boy, probably out hare coursing earlier in the day perhaps, I hope maybe he's got a loving owner waiting for him from long ago. Hoping that our 'good deed' will mean 'whast goes around comes around ' Shame of it all was we were the only car to stop and try to get this dog, as it ambled slowly in front of 3 cars they all impatiently wanted to get past it on the single track road. Shame on them. It just ghoes to show how people watch our lost dogs go by without a care in the world for their safety. Shocking really. Thanks again all for you kind comments, and for Jo for updating where I haven't !  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Full update on Jacob’s blog, which I know a lot of you are following - http://missingbraccojacob.blogspot.com/ but in a couple of things to report. Jon and Shelley had a call from someone in the Welwyn Garden City area who has seen a man walking a newly acquired dog that matches the description of Jacob. The person who called has been very helpful and initially as it was thought the man in question (walking in the area fairly regularly) would soon be seen, Jon and Shelley took the quiet approach, not postering in fear of scaring him off but staking out the area to hopefully spot the man and said dog. Unfortunately despite numerous visits to the area and help from the army of Jacob helpers, the man and dog were not seen so the area has now been postered and flyered and Jon and Shelley are waiting hopefully for another member of the public to call to support the original possible sighting. The man said he bought the dog from travellers, and this was possibly from the Billericay area in Essex. At the moment there are lot of unanswered questions, and we just need a few more definite pieces of info to get the jigsaw puzzle to fit together!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear Shelley, Thanks very much for your posting on the Monty page, and for your kind comments of encouragement in our search for him. I know you are going through the same emotions that I am and for this you have my deepest sympathy.  It's the not knowing that really is the most difficult aspect to cope with. Monty has been gone for 3 months now, which means I have not seen him all this year. Although we have had some fairly positive sightings, nothing has come of them - yet. Reading your pages, it looks as though your experiences with Jacob seem to be the same.  I am convinced that with all the eyes looking out for both our boys we will find them one day. It's encouraging to know that many lost dogs are found months, sometimes a year or so, after going missing.  This is the one fact that is helping me to keep a positive attitude and to push the thoughts of other possibilities out. I am sure you are able to do the same. Just don't give up as I'm sure, like me, you never will. Best wishes MikeLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 20th March 10.43pm Thanks Jo and everyone for their kind comments.
We do try our best to keep Jacob's appeal in the limelight, it's the best way to keep him in people's minds. It's amazing how far and wide the news of him missing travels, the chain letter effect thankfully works for things other than "email 8 friends in 8 minutes or your hands will drop off" !!!! It's been a heck of a week for us, a real rollercoaster of emotions and we're currently, maybe on the trail of what could be him. I of course could turn out not to be him, but we are so hopeful. A case of right time and right place, and this could quite possibly be all over. I won't go into detail here, it's very long winded so forgive me ! if you or anyone wants to know any more can I kindly ask that you look at the blog as that saves me writing it all again the blog is http://missingbraccojacob.blogspot.com/ - All will be clear then lol ! Thanks to everyone for their encouragement. It helps ease our tensions to know that others have gone through this for as long (and much more) and still managed to get reunited. Thanks everyone your support is much needed right now I can't tell you ;-)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I haven't posted before but wanted to show some support after your hoax call. My dog went missing over 2 years ago and I got very good at weeding out the hoaxers. If they leave a phone number or ask you to contact them or offer help they're genuine, If they don't then they're just sad people who have no life and no morals. My stress levels went through the roof trying to get in touch with these morons, one of the calls even appeared to be a practical joke played on a 3rd party and one had me checking electoral registers for people with a particular first name all to no avail. Don't give these peculiar people a second of your time or thoughts!  I do hope you find this beautiful boy as you're trying so hard. And if it's any comfort have no fear of him being able to survive quite happily out on his own, they are remarkable animals and revert back to being semi wild in a matter of weeks.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jon & Shelley, Have been following Jacob since day 1; what a beautiful dog he is; can't help in search as am too far away but wanted you to know I am constantly hoping for that lucky break for you. I am involved too in the loss of a much loved dog, Monty; who shared a bit of spotlight with Jacob in Dogs Today recently; two lovely dogs who should be back home with us, as should they all. Like you we have spent hours, postering, searching even BBQ'ing (the smell is supposed to travel up to 3 miles) in areas where there have been possible sightings and presently have 2 traps down. Doglost co-ordinator and volunteers have been marvellous and a god send as Monty went missing 90 miles from home. You wonder how they can vanish just like that, within seconds no sign, and that awful panic sets in..they must be somewhere though and hopefully when you least expect it that lead will come....keep strong.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hallo, I haven't looked in here before (sorry) I'm in Surrey and like several others tearing my hair out looking for a German Pointer called Hugo. I just received your letter from a relative of my husbands in Thaxted.  Just wanted you to know that it is really 'doing the rounds' and she has been sending it on widely as I will now. Although I'm quite a way from you it is a brilliant idea to spread the word. Long time Dl helpers are hoping the day will return when we could just press a button on Dl and send details and posters to everyone in our address book so easily and we got alerts for dogs in our area, not that Jacob would have been in mine anyway, but it kept us on our toes !  Hope that you will get the result you are so hoping for very soon, nobody could do more, Jan .Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Shelley, haven't posted on here yet but we have emailed privately as I've got Jacob on my website.  Few years ago I got involved with searching for and finding a lost lab.  I'd asked the owners to email me pictures because I THOUGHT I'd seen her - but even with several pics I couldn't be sure.  So my point is that they can change in appearance if they're 'on the run' and living wild, so not necessarily easy to identify from photos when they're living in their normal home, well fed and loved.  So don't dismiss any sightings where people aren't sure.  Best of luck as always.  GillLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wedneday 11th March 3pm We're back home now, having looked all round Broxted and through to Thaxted We've walked for 3hrs solid, and then put flyers round the houses in Broxted. There's posters up heavily there, but thought better to put some flyers through aswell. The lady who called us will ask her son to look the website and blog, he's not there til later, so we're eagerly awaiting him to see if he really does think it could be him. Remember it was dark, but with the full moon it's also possibly easier to see, so he might be able to identify it really was Jacob. We can't wait for him to look at all the pics so he can really see what he looks like and let us know his thoughts. Apart from that, we've parked on high points, walked the fishing lake (there's 4 fishermen spread out there, and they now have flyers. We've walked a few footpaths around that area as it's very open, just to helps you see the expanse ahead, and if we can spot him on the horizon. It's all very open in Broxted, no real woods, just farmland, and more farmland (most of which is now on my boots!) so if he's out there, he will be seen i'm sure of that. We'll see what today brings, and head out again for a drive through tonight. Fingers crossed for good news in the next few days.   Oh and Thanks Sheba for passing word round your area. I know Sheering, used to have a friend that lived there !  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wednesday 11th March 7.35am Strange two days here..... Monday saw us get a call from a European sounding woman who started to say "hello, I have found your dog, Jacob the Italiano Bracco" shocked and excited I replied "oh really", to which she continued "Yes I think so" - just as I was replying to her the phone cracked and went dead. Tried ringing the mobile number she calle don back - answerphone (T-Mobile) thought - bad signal area so sat with phone in hand for 30 mins thinking she was running after him, trying to get him, an hour passed, still going onto asnswerphone, that's was oky, she was at the vets, maybe he was hurt, 2 hrs went by, where could she be ? her battery was flat ? Still going to answerphone. Next morning after a sleepless night (and still trying the mobile) the phone rang at 7am, only for it to ring 8 times and then someone abort it to answerphone. Damn it. Was this our 1st hoax ? All day, between the 6 Jacob detectives we rang, including the police, who are now in the process of tracing the call to locate the caller. I even texted to say, if you have our boy, please let him go to somewhere where you can tell us to pick him up, if it's about the reward, no questions asked. Also are you a joker, if so just say. we won't bother you again. What a day ! Guess if this was our first hoaxer, we just weren;t ready for how how it would hit us, and how the hell can someone thinki t was funny I will never know. I won't swear here, but they are callous beyond words. Last night about 8pm a lady from Broxted called to say her son was walking their Boxer and Dog De Bordeaux, in a feild behind their house, and were confronted by a dog that went boncing in to her dogs, and also annoying her horses. Of course Jon's reaction was that Jacob was very friendly, and would never try to annoy anyone, but then we have to remember, he's maybe (if it is him) been out there 2 months now, and maybe not quite so 'Jacob' anymore. The dog her son saw was inbetween the 2 breeds they have, so size would be about right, orange and white, and mostly white on the chest. All good descriptions of Jacob. He went around then, and then off towards Thaxted direction. We went out there til late, but saw nothing at all. It was a lovely night as it's a full moon, and was like someone left a lightbulb on, quite good to see. We'll go back there in an hour to resume the search and speak with the lady at her house for more details if she's in. It could be Jaocb, maybe the call was to suss us out, maybe they got scared after all the calls yesterday, and now the police are involved, we have to follow this all up - just because it could be him. Will keep you updated later on of course. Would someone at Doglost please check out the pointer that has been found recently, I beleive it's 8th March, liver and white, small lumps on him. I just want to rule this out being listed wrongly as a Pointer and it could actually be Jacob (REALLY long shot I know and I know you all know your breeds !) but every stone and all that !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've been at Crufts since Thursday, staying until Monday after watching Best In Show.  The posters have stayed up around Crufts which is great as in the past they have taken posters down.  Seen the Bracco's being shown yesterday, hope the posters in Crufts get more people on the look out for him.  Well done to you guys who have been putting posters up.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've also just come back from Crufts and it was good to see Jacob's poster on so many of the stalls.  I really do hope this brings results and you have your boy back with you soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thursday 5th March 7.45pm   Thanks for the comments guys n gals, it's nice to know there are folks seeing posters we've put up, it does work ! Angus that is really encouraging to know about the posters being up on the stalls, I am so pleased to know that ome did as they promised, it's just what we hoped for. I reckon the Bracchi you saw were maybe bitches Angus, they tend to be quite smaller. Jacob would stand say 27" at the shoulder, maybe a little more even, he's quite tall. Just added a changed photo for the main one Jo, kind of gives a clearer view of Jacob I thought.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just got back from Crufts and pleased to say that I saw Jacob's poster on some of the trade stands that I visited. I also went to discover dogs to see the Bracco's and was really surprised that they were a lot smaller than I imagined from his poster, so might be worth putting his approx height to the shoulder on his description.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bumped up due to press coverage. Sorry Shelley, I took all the apostrophes out of your post to get it to work, not sure if that was necessarily the problem but once I'd posted, any updates I tried caused it to have a bit of a moan again and it wouldn't update! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Update from Shelley.. Thursday 5th March Cant say enough Thanks to you all for the advice recently. Glad to see that Jacob is in the local paper here, and also made a story in the national, The Weekly News. Hope something can come of either of them. Michelle, Thanks for taking time to pass on Jacobs details, that is so lovely of you. I will get in touch with the Crufts TV/FM team today and see what strings I can pull to get him mentioned. Julie, OMG about your dog being in the RSPCA all the time youve been out looking. You know, its made me rethink too, ive contacted lots and lots of rescues, but now im going to go national ! - like you said, for the most part many rescues have no other choice than to base their work purely on the local areas they are in, but it doesnt hurt to spread the word far and wide. I used a site recently that listed many up and own the country and I emailed everyone on its listing, from UK, to Wales, to Ireland and Scotland. It doesnt mean its enough though, still ill tackle that today. I worry too about Jacobs breed being tagged as something else, a hound maybe or a crossbreed. His breed is not well known, and I know people who have been in dogs for years who dont know what he is. I am so sorry about the ending of your ordeal Julie, and mad, and sad that you had to go through all that worry.  Jacob is chipped, so I would hope that the rescues and vets would scan him, and scan him properly. I worry myself stupid that the chip wont be scanning ! Its the smaller rescues, or those unknowns that take in waifs and strays that I need to reach out to aswell. I worry the smaller rescues wont have scanners ? It should be law they do I guess, so each dog they (and everyone else) handles can be thoroughly checked.I guess they struggle enough feeding the dogs they kindly taken in though, let alone buying a scannerdouble edged sword Jo, ive asked about the habits of the deer, theres not really any particular places, they are just known to roam the two big woods that we frequent, and we look round them often, havent seen any evidence of Jacobness yet ! We have had, after my 6hr stint of emailing all the exhibitiors on the Crufts stallholders on Monday, a really great response from them. I think Jacobs missing Doglost poster will be up in many stalls over the next 4 days. Also a lovely lady called Margaret at Dog Theft Action asked me to mail her a wedge of flyers to her NEC hotel, so she can put them on her stand. We and the Jacob pet detectives will be at Crufts all day Saturday, so will be handing out flyers, postering wherever we can get away with it. Good ideas about the buses, never thought of that ! Well try to poster the loos and car parks as best we can. Kowing how busy Crufts is its hard to think past handing out flyers, and asking the breed stands at Discover Dogs to display his poster. We will have to see, but I hope that someone will see the poster and info will start to flow. Its been  so long without seeing that lovely boys face, we miss him so much, so hoping Crufts timing will be all that we need to get him home. Will update you all after the weekend, unless of course something brilliant happens and then youll hear us scream from wherever you are!

Crufts TV coverage is a live webcast this year with a company called Sunset & Vine, perhaps you could try to get an interview with them and get his picture out to their viewers? either that or email the CRUFTS FM or go along and tap on their window inside the NEC! (it worked for me last year!) and ask them to do an on-air appeal for you? BTW it was me that emailed you earlier - the first I heard of this was when I got a fwd of your email from one of the traders (Bella Moss Foundation) who i'm on a mailing list with....anyway I have put your link out on my Facebook now and fwd an invitation to your blog to the Editor of London Dogtails magazine and also Caroline Kisko of the Kennel Club. Hope it helps! Michelle & Ruby Scrumptious  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

JULIE
Hi, I have been following your dogs story as I lost my dog at around the same time, did  everything I possibly could to find her and found out on friday that the RSPCA had had her the whole time but had her listed as a labrador cross (she was a doberman springer cross), the only way that I found out was by insisting that they look up any black and tan bitch and even then they gave me two phone numbers of people who had reported seeing her but did not tell me that they had picked her up. I found this out from one of the numbers they had given me and then took 24 hours to finally pin her down.  She had been injured and taken to their hospital.  The moral of the story is that they do not check on any of these sites and if they do not know the breed of your dog (which is an unsual one) will list it as something else.  I really hope that you find your dog and have a better outcome than I did.  Kind regards and all the best, Julie  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a shame the Bishops Stortford trail has gone cold and it looks as if the sightings weren't of Jacob. But on the plus side, thats another area, not that far away, that is postered and more people aware. Great you are going up to Crufts armed with posters and flyers, I am sure all will be supportive to the Jacob search and help in whatever way they can. Unfortunately doesn't look like I am going to make it up to Crufts this year or I would have of course helped you. You may have already thought/done, but how about taking some larger, say A3 sized posters too - some of the bigger stalls in good prominent positions may have enough room to display and then of course they will be more noticeable to people walking past. In the area local to you, where Jacob went missing from, are there any experts on the deer herds e.g. the favoured areas they go to, water points etc - just wonder whether Jacob may be in a similar area. Trying to think of new avenues!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 28th February 9.50am Afraid the trail at Bishops Stortford has gone cold....... I spoke with the dog warden and am assured that the dog that was causing the back log of traffic (2nd sighting call) was a brindle greyhound. There are currently 2 greyhounds on the loose in that very area, so I we assume that the dog the lady saw in the car park, was probably one of these. I don't really know what action we can take now.....we need a sighting desperately. Our next plan of action is to ask all theb stall holders at Crufts to display our missing posters, and we'll print 1000's of small flyers to take with us and hand out to everyone as we walk round. Someone must know something. We just have to be patient I guess, wait our turn to gt him back.... Thanks for all the encouraging advice, I know we can still get him back, and that yes he could well be still out in the area, we just wish he was home !  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Possible sighting last week on Stansted Road, BISHOPS STORTFORD. The kind lady that called Jon saw the dog last week. She got a good look at the dog and believes it was Jacob, she has just seen Jacob's poster and made the call. She did try to catch the dog but 'he' was quite nervy so she was unable to.  Jon and Shelley have gone straight over to Bishops Stortford armed with posters. Fingers crossed this is the lead everyone has been waiting for. Please let it be.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Monday 23rd Feb 5.50pm Hi All Thank You so much for putting Jacob into Countrymans Weekly for us, it's really appreciated. We've not long had a call from a lady stating that she saw a dog that she really thought was Jacob along the Balsham/Wratting road. This was back on roughly the 29th Jan. She and a lorry stopped, and she said she saw 'him' face on, he was very muddy and tall and slim build. She said she would have stopped and tried to catch him if she'd have known, but she couldn't as she had her son in the car. Jon was quick to ask her if she could be confusing the dog she saw with a hunt dog, as we have still had those sightings that led us to the hunt people stating the lost dog that the previous lady caught with another passer by was picked up by the hunt, returned the same evening as therefore not logged. I want to speak to these people, so we've left messages again, in the hope we can find out for sure what happened there. Of course this would be another 'hunt' dog as the dates of the other dog don't coincide. Lots fo open ended questions that we need answers to. We have already postered that area well, and so know that it's covered, but we'll drive out there again tonight and have a wander about. It's a long time ago, so we're clutching at straws again, and of course as there are weekly hunt meets, it might another hunt dog after all. BUT then it could be Jacob. We just have to keep an open mind I just wish these weren't weeks old sightings, they are just stale by the time you get them, but do help to peice together another part of the jigsaw. Just need that FRESH sighting now, or a call from someone who knows something about his whereabouts. Fingers crossed x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Shelley...please take confort many dogs have been reunited on doglost after being out weeks and months  ..we had a very elusive little dog here in the SW called Rowan 16250 recently a Sheltie..how this little boy survived in that freezing weather lots of fast roads, even a motorway all that time we have no idea .(14/12/08 - 04/02/09) but he did!!
It may be worth getting someone to camp out (in the car) next time there is a sighting and scent the area near by (and if Jacob is used to a particular car) this may be necessary .xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Monday 16th February 6pm Apologies that I ahven't been updating regularly here, I guess now we have been adding daily to the blog we created for Jaocb it's become easier to just do that alone, and spend more time out searching and postering. I just had time to catch up, and was saddened to read about the rainbow bridge dogs. I cannot imagine how those owners must have felt. My heart goes out to them.I'm so sad for them. Jon and I just hope that jacob is out there, still safe, still alive and managing to survive til someone sees him or we find him ourselves. The not knowing is the one thing that drives us crazy with worry. I know those of you riding this rollercoaster know what I mean. We've spent the weekend searching again, postering further out, and have put lots more flyers out around the houses in the villages. We did have a call Saturday from a man saying he's seen a dog like Jacob in nearby Wimbish, running speedily across a feild. It could well have been our boy, we have to keep hope. We got our friends all out and searched on foot through the whole area, for the most part we covered the area well, and taking our other dogs we hope the scent left might draw him out. So far nothing else, no further calls. We hear that we made a small article in the Sunday People yesterday, and also are assured that an article will be going into the next edition of Dogs Today, for which we Thank Beverly Cuddy for her kindness allowing us to air our plight. We'll keep you all up to date as best we can. We are still actively out there searching, waiting for that all important call to come in. We just can't believe that a month is nearly upon us since we saw Jacob. We just so wish someone would let us know if they have him, a friend has him, or that they beleive he is somewhere. Dogs don't just vanish off the planet like this. If he's now been stolen, then we need to really rev up our national appeal. It would seem coincidental that he could have been stolen and moved on after going awol that day, but i'm sure it happens. Just hoping that time is on our side, and this story has a happy ending. Hello Jon & Shelley, re the last comment I fully agree, Myself and many others ( including a fantastic DW) helped  look, poster and  search etc  for Rowan and after 7 weeks we got that all important call and he was Reunited .Many tears of joy were shed that day !!  He was spotted in several places but sometimes we had no sightings for weeks. We just kept postering new wider areas around sightings,   He had been through so much already, a car crash and being hit by a car!!  Then the freezing weather and when I finally got to meet the little fella after 7 wks on the run he looked amazing and you would never know any different, so please try and keep your spirits up, you are all doing a fantastic job looking for Jacob and I check your blog daily for news. All the very best luck in your search and I hope and pray  your boy is home soon.xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've watched Jacob's story from the start and so want to see him safely back with his family, so many dedicated helpers on here for him, I'm sure you'll get your reward.   Come on Jacob, we're all rooting for you, lovely boy xx Genie's Mum, I hope Jacob's people won't mind me using his page to ask you how Scrappy is getting on?   Hope he is doing well, dear little man.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Muns is right he will feel threatend and hunted, I wouldn't let anyone go to check out the sightings of Genie, I had to do it because I knew she would only come to me, even when I caught her my husband came over to us and she really barked at him and pushed herself into me. Like I said before check out sightings quietly and calm, loads of people charging through the fields is not going to make him feel safe. He will be hungry, take smelly food and play on the hunger. Get all the wonderful voulunteers to do the leaflets and posters so you can be free to answer the phone, I spent lots of time on the internet posting on every dog forum I could find, looking up and phoning every local service that may have people out and about, police, postmen milkmen, council workers, schools. Then I drove around the area checking out footpaths, bridleways, stables. I went down farm tracks and private lanes just trying to think if I was a dog where would I hide, sleep and feed. Go to where the last sighting was and follow any tracks, bridleways etc see if there are any familiar footprints left in the snow.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Lots of good advice going on here, please take a moment to look at Rowan (ID16250) reunited today, 7 weeks on the run, he hadn't been spotted for weeks and then last night that all important call, and today he his safe and home. Keep strong and positive. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It does sound as if Jacob is being sensible and staying in the countryside and not straying near the M11 which is good news - and I agree that big search parties may well just make him run further in the wrong direction. I would make small flyers and take them round to every village school  to hand out as the kids are coming out in the  afternoon - kids in such areas are ususally driven to school and can look out for Jacob on the way.  Also leave flyers in every village pub, and if poss for this Sunday on the tables by the entrances in the churches, if the vicar will allow it. Farm shops and of course the village shop/PO are excellent places too for leaving flyers. There are quite a few little 'office clusters' in villages round that way - I know there is one in Great Barfield, up behind the church, with small businesses in a converted farmyard. Leafleting places like that is good too... Just blitz that while area between SW and Thaxted!

Bumped up due to radio coverage. Shelley and Jon, it must be so frustrating for you but as you can see from all the comments on Jacob's page here, you have a lot of support.....all waiting for that next sighting or even better the call. It will come.....it will seem like forever waiting but it will happen.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

hi shelley and jon i know this feeling so well and it is a living nightmare i know it consumes your whole life 24/7. what muns says makes perfect sense and if you can find some strength from within and try this low key tactic it may just work.it is very possible that he does feel hunted and he will hide until it feels safe to come out again.      can't put into words how much i want to see him home.((((((((big hug for you both)))))))) xx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This may sound completely mad to you but I have been thinking about Jacob and looking at his photos he striked me as a fairly timid dog and I am wondering if all the people searching are worrying him and he is hiding away. Therefore maybe leaving some feed stations in the area and checking them quietly a couple of times a day and letting him settle into the area and play a waiting game for a few days may make him more secure and sightings might come in. This is, I realise, an alien action when all you want to do is get out and hunt for him but I am just thinking he may feel hunted and need a much lower key quieter approach. Just some thoughts and as always you know him best...

Monday 3rd Feb 10pm Hi everyone Thanks so much to you all for taking the time to write your encouraging stories and experiences , and for the advice about being reunited with your dogs, we really needed that - to know this can and does end happily is altogether lifting our spirits especially as when the sightings come in you automatically beleive in your heart that this nightmare (and is IS a nightmare) is going to end very soon.Twice now we've thought this, heart racing driven at mach 90 to get to the place, only our hopes to be dashed. Still nothing to go on, we've scoured the area these past 3 days since the sighting on Saturday with help of our fab friends, but absolutely come up with blanks. 2 friends have gone ahead and sought the help of Pea Horsely and animal communicator, I am hoping some good can come of that. All we can do now is carry on living in Groundhog day, whereby the car/and fields/woods become our office each day. Good news is that our local newspapers are running articles on Jacob's dissapearance, and we truly hope that those who haven't seen the (many) posters and flyers everywhere will put 2 and 2 together and come up with 4. He has also had airtime recently this week on the radio, lastly on Heart FM We're also trying to gain tv time now with Anglia, and friends are trying GMTV as apparently they seem short on news apart from the snow ! We started to think that maybe someone has started to feed him, unknowing that he has a home somewhere. By feeding him, I mean as in from a distance, oh that poor dog, look he's so thin....of course he will then be staying in one particular area knowing their is food to be had ??? I don't know what else to think, why if we (and friends) are drivng the surrounding areas round and roud, walking on foot through woods and farmland every single day have none of us seen him. I find it strange to be truthful, but do realise the vast area we live in - being so rural there are lots of places safe to hide away and not be seen even if you aren't trying. <sigh> Well, that's all for now, here's hoping the newspapers or Pea can shed light onto his whereabouts...we're getting desperate now, we want him back, he's OURS and alongside that we want normal life to resume...hell I even get excited about the weekly shop these days as it's my only entry in normailty !   Thanks again everyone, Shelley x    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Are there many ditches-it sounds like your boy is moving 'unseen' via maybe a network of ditches and hence the few sightings-he is cannier than you expected. I believe this is often a pattern to their 'travels' Good luck-I hope the snow brings easier tracking. You are getting closer now.

This sounds like a promising break through with this credible sighting, as others have said the snow may be an aid to you in tracking any footprints that you may find, and you may be able to re scent any areas that you find his tracks, good luck for tomorrow  xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Snow is actually very good. If you look for paw prints and see no human footsteps then follow them. It is easy to see a lone dog and the snow makes tracking so much easier. Although he will bed down in his den, he will also be out for food.  Good luck...judy

Great there has been another sighting and fantastic that you got the radio coverage......I'm going to listen to it once I have posted this! You may already be doing this but plot the sightings on a map.....I know there's only been 2 or 3 so far but still do it, you will see a pattern as the sightings increase. Good that yesterdays sighting is in similar area to the possible sightings around the water tower. I without doubt don't have to say this as you are doing fantastic, but keep the posters going in this area.......as the very kind lady who called yesterday showed, the posters are vital. Jacob has probably found himself a 'safe place' within this area now. As the sightings come in you will be able to pin point a more precise area of his movements......then can revisit scenting, with the view of using a trap if needed. It may not feel like it but you are getting closer! P.S. The Springer in the ditch - was it just being walked or was it an RTA?  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sunday 1st Feb 7.44pm Hi All THANK YOU for all of your words and stories of encouragement, we really appreciate all of them, and they give us real hope of a happy ending to this absolute nightmare. We had a sighting yesterday, in Purton End, near to Debden. A lady drove past our poster on the crossroads, then 100yards ahead saw Jacob ambling in the big ditch on the side of the road. She travelled up a few hundred yards more and saw another poster whereby she phoned us. We were there 5 or 6 monutees later, but unfortunately Jacob was nowhere to be seen. Luckily we had 3 cars of helpers yesterday, and we literally were over the area on foot and in cars like a bad rash. Still out at 11pm - but no joy sadly. We did have a bit of worry on the sighting as one of the helpers saw at almost the same place on her driving past, a liver and white Springer in the ditch, our hearts dropped thinking this was the dog our caller saw. Jon called this lady to recall what she saw, she was very smart, knew what she had seen and said it defintely wasn’t a Springer, nor red Stetter or JR, she knew her dogs, maybe not that she knew what A Bracco was, but the dog she saw was taller, short haired, gangly legs, young looking, and orange and white, nothing like a Springer. This put our minds at rest for the most part, and that the ’fake’ sighting from the strange shifty guy of last week, could well have been a real sighting, especially as the areas were really closeby. Today, nothing, we’ve had a sprinkle of snow, nothing heavy so far. we’re not sure we wan’t snow, or not, would it help us to see him, bring him out, or send him into his ’den’ - i’m unsure. A good result was that a friend of ours who also has a Bracco managed to somehow pull strings and have Jacob’s story and plight on the Radio 1 and BBC Radio Essex news bulletins - we heard them and it was really quite surreal to hear your dog being on national radio ! You can hear it here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p0021cmh If you click the link, it’ll open BBC real player for BBC Essex and start this particular programme from the beginning...the news is the first thing you here, his appeal is in the news bulletin so you only have to listen to 3 or 4 mins of the programme to hear it, listen directly after the report of ?800, laptop and jewellery stolen from a house We truly hope someone will spot him soon, or suddenly realise they’ve seen him and call us. We so want him back, he is sorely missed by us and we cannot function properly without our boy being here. It sounds stupid I know, but well he is a missing’furchild’ to us...we won’t rest until he’s home.   Again THANK YOU to everyone willing our Jacob home, we are so grateful for you all being here for us Shelleyx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You look to be doing everything you can and I know when the weather is like this you can't sleep. When Genie was missing I sobbed all night when it rained, she goes into shock when she gets wet and shivers uncontrolably, I thought she would die of shock, but everyone kept assuring me that her instincts would kick in she would do everything to survive, and they did. She had found a concrete pipe for shelter, near a stream for water and was eating pigeons and berrys. Your boy will survive because thats what dogs are designed to do, and the time will come when you get that important phone call. Ours was 6am on a sunday morning after checking out every single sighting in parts of Essex I had never heard of, my husband had resorted to sleeping in the car in a cafe car park next to the A13 so he could just drive when we got a call (and we got called out to every stray dog in Essex) The phone call came and immediatly we knew it had to be her although we had had no realistic sightings since the day she was taken, and we knew she had been clipped by a car so there was a big chance she was injured or worse. Dashed to the sighting where the caller had waited for us and we quietly searched the area. I had remembered to take two metal dog bowls with me and some biscuit as I thought that the sound of that rattling was familiar to being fed and would tug on the tummy instead of calling her name and scaring her off, when I saw her although instinct is to scream I stayed calm and my instinct was to get down lower than her so she didn't feel threatend, I layed on the ground and slowly extended a handfull of food towards her she started eating the food so I slid the food bowl towards her as she started eating that I stroked her on the back and she realised it was ok and threw herself at me. I hope this will give you some comfort and help. When you check out sightings look for signs, we found footprints, poo and feathers which we tracked straight to where she was sitting. He will be looking for warmth this weather so try to go out at first light and look around any buildings in the area that may have heating oulet vents or any sheds or buildings with access, when searching try to stay quiet and use smelly food as bait instead of your voice, he will have turned ferrel by now and beyond the stage where he will come running back you need to think wild hungry wild animal. If you find him but can't catch him then trapping is the best thing I have a trap if you can't get one local. At this stage just keep his profile high, we had 8ft banners made with doglost web site our phone number and her photo we put these up on the A13 and A127 so it got all those commuters and it was the banners and posters that got us that important sighting. As you know dawn and dusk is when they are out and about so inform postmen and milkmen who are likely to be walking the streets at those hours I hope this has helped. Best of Luck. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I lost my Boxer for a while in Feb 2 years ago. Boxers are not known for their intelligence, but he survived ok. The big thing (according to my vet) is dehydration, and this time of year there is a hell of a lot of water around. Dogs will eat droppings from other animals as well as grass and other vegetation plus of course whatever they can scavenge. If you think about it, a fox can survive in the wild, well so can a dog. I was convinced I would never see my boy again, but we kept looking and thank God, we found him. Have faith, keep postering everywhere you can, and I'm sure you will get him back. We found our boy because I took posters to the local sorting office, the postmen photocopied them (unknown to us at the time) and put them through doors with the mail. Someone saw our boy at 6am and rang the police, who were helping us too, and they rang us.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Most dogs who are living on their wits after going missing do adapt well to their situation and start acting feral, but they normally revert to domestic behaviour once they are caught and brought home. They usually spend several days just eating and sleeping.

Shelly, I totally understand your worries, I really do. I have emailed ’Genie’s mum’, Genie is the lurcher who was stolen and then out loose for 6 days, I mentioned her in an earlier post...I am sure she will give you an account of her own personal experience and how Genie survived out there and how she was caught. My recent experience of a long term missing dog is Bubbles and she was the last one to want to go outside before being lost and has quickly reverted to this behaviour after her capture. She fed herself very well and survived very cold temperatures after Christmas. They are a lot hardier than we imagine. I guess they revert to their ancestors and hunt rabbits, rats, etc I hope you get some more sightings soon. It is very unnerving but try not to think of the worst scenarios. As it gets colder do you think he may move closer to people? This is ultimately what Bubbles did-not close enough to catch but to get attention and feeds! There are so many places a dog can hide up and get warmth that we cannot even access. Broken boards at bottom of sheds and barns make doorways for them, Dutch barns etc Still praying for you all! x

Friday 30th Jan 8.05pm Hi all, Thanks for the comments and advice. Been out before dawn and still out at dusk, we just cannot find our boy, he's nowhere to be seen. We're worrying like crazy about his ability to survive. Bracco are very intelligent dogs, but also are very different in mentality to lots of other breeds that may well become 'feral' easier and more quickly. Jon and I worry for the fact he may not be eating. It's something praying on our monds and worries us that it may be the difference between surviving or not. The main problem he faces here is the fact we are very rural, this is not somewhere he can scavenge for take outs or readily loot dustbins. This is agricultral ground, open farmland and woods. What would he eat. Would he eat rabbits, I just don't know - fir the first thing, would he catch them ? hmmmm We are maybe getting snow, maybe the weather will draw him out of a hiding place he may be using to keep warm, we just don't know. We worry for his wellbeing, the talk of people saying he will be feral now, well I just don't know ebough of others experiences of this to know how I feel if Jacob would be at this point of leaving domesticity. We're hoping and praying for a sighting, the one at the P.O seems to be a huge 'fake' - we wasted hours there yesterday that could have been spent looking elsewhere, but I guess it means we've searched further out too. Jo Thanks for putting our lovely boy on Page 1 and on the alert, means heaps. SO need that 2nd sighting now. Any thoughts on this survival behaviour would be very welcomed from anyone gone through this, or knows how dogs react. Jacob (by the way) has never been a great eater, may well be his making now. Thanks all Shelley xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I rang a phsycic when ou dog was stolen some years ago and she was incredibiy accurate when we got the dog home and filled in the missing bits with finderMaybe you should try working from home to sightings today and as Jotty says try and lay a scent trail to help him. Also I agree that a stranger has less chance than you of getting near him and not to worry about that too much. You are getting closer, even if it doesn’t feel like it. You must be exhausted but glad to see posted because I was starting to worry you really had been arrested with the  night vision gear!!

Shelley,   As Jacob has been out for a several days now, chances are he would be difficult to catch ? that?s why we advise the ?think dog? approach which I know was explained in the info I sent you, therefore this strange man probably wouldn?t have much luck in catching Jacob, even if he stumbled right upon him ? again unlikely given the vast area and the amount of time you?ve been out and not seen him. So don?t worry about him too much, great the PO lady managed to get his details though ? seems a bit strange just to sit there outside?.but then some people are strange!! Also, re the people not calling, like you say they may have no appreciation of the nightmare you are going through, and also some people have no concept how the sightings of the missing dog in a situation like Jacob?s are crucial and help the owner immensely. But it sounds like you have massive local support so thankfully these silly people are a minority.   How close is the water tower area and also the area that he has been found in before that the animal communicator mentioned to home? Are they near enough to scent from there to home?   Like the animal communicator said, the best times to go out looking are dawn and dusk??that?s when Jacob is most likely to try and catch his food; there will be lots of bunnies hopping around!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 30th Jan - new update - 10.10am Just had a call from Jon's Dad re the woman in post office - slightly worrying... The full story materiases in that the lady in post office at Audley end saw a car outside (think teeny tiny post office very rural area) and it was there for some 10 minutes, a MAN sitting in his car. In the end as she thought it strange she locked the PO and went outside to ask what he was doing - he replied "I've seen that dog, the one that's lost" to which lady in PO replied "where", "over near the water tower at Thaxted Road" was his reply. The woman in PO asked him to report hsi sighting by calling the number, to ehich he said yes and was off. She took No. plate of this car and description of man This is worring in that this man did not get out of his car, and would not have been able to see the small flyer that they fitted in the door of the PO from where he was parked. Possibly could be this man is hunting him for the reward ? We're off out now gain to search, fingers crossed we cna find him before someone unscroupulous can. Thanks all Shelley x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 30th Jan - day 10 We'v been out and about day and night trying to see out boy, right now he is nowhere to be seen. Had a possible (vague) yesterday - the long and shot of itis someone walked into the post office in Audley End, and saw jacob's poster on the door, said "Oh I think I may have seen that dog near the water tower on Thaxted Road"....the lady working in the post office said to call us, she thinks took a flyer, and the woman said she'd ring us. The post office closes at 12 noon, and we only by chance got to know about this possible sighting at 4pm yesterday when the lady who works in the post office by chance saw my hubby's Dad and asked had she called...NO she hadn't - still hasn't. Now, we are targetting that area, not knowing if that is a true sighting, or not. How anyone can be so cruel not to call is beyond me. If she does call I will get the information, and then give her a peice of my mind and ask that all important question - WHY NO CALL ! I guess we have to realise and accept that not all people are 'animal lovers' and therefore bear no concept of how traumatic this crisis is to them (us) We have also had through friends on the Spione group contact with Joanna Hull, a well respected pet communicator/psychic, she thinks she has 'spoken' to Jacob and he is alive, been on a big adventure, is hungry, lonely, and tryig to get home now. She feels he was 'waorried' he was in trouble with Jon for being away so long.He has a hurt left paw according to her feelings. She pinointed the area that she feels he's in or around, it's funny that actually his area is where Jacob when on daytime awol's has been found twice before (she wouldn't have known that) - so it's quite the possibility. Also it's on the circle of him coming home it at the place the "sighting" was at the watertower yesterday. Right now we are vague as to where to be loking other than Audley End area, the Watertower, and of course Joannes specified region. We were out at 5.45am this morning hoping for a sighting as Joanne said to be out early if possible. We just hope he's making tracks back home. That's about all for now, thanks for all your good wishes Shelley x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wow! Great idea on the night vision gear, I am willing you so much to see the one bit of  'wildlife' you are searching for. Will keep my fingers tightly crossed for you both. Dogs really are very resourceful when they are out loose so have confidence Jacob will be okay out there by himself......a couple of cases in the past highlight what I mean well - an elderly (10yrs+) JRT out for a good few weeks in sub zero temperatures and snow, no sightings at all then one day just 'popped out' from under a hedge in front of a dog walker. Also a lurcher, seen to have been hit by a car after running onto a main A road after escaping from thieves that stole her....was then seen running up the central reservation after being hit but again then nothing, no more sightings. 6 days later owners got a call after a night worker on his way home in the early hours spotted their dog. She'd been living loose for the 6 days and her owners had been working so so hard too, just like you, searching hour after hour and then the call came. It will be your turn soon I am sure. Each day that goes past is a day nearer you are to the call. Is it March's edition of Dogs Today that Jacob is in (which I believe is on sale early Feb?). I will make sure Jacob is bumped up to the top of the listings again when the mag is out. Great the shoots are keeping at eye out......you never know Jacob may hear/smell them and go take a look.....he might think you've sent out the cavalry to catch his dinner for him that night!! We are all thinking of Jacob, and the tremendous efforts you and Jon are going to get your baby home. I wish I had a magic wand at times I really do. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi all   Just a really quick update, we're just back in and have managed to get some night vision mono whatsit's - not cheap and the shop didn't have the right lithium battery so we had to drive round to find one - you'd think for near on ?200 they'd throw in a bloody battery lol ! Still, let's hope that it'll enable us to spot him, it'll hopefully make all the difference tonight when we're out. Last night I was stumbling around as I go 'blind' as as a bat in the dark, so i'm now the proud owner of a posh led headtorch - least when the police arrest me for tresspassing i'll be able to see them !   Ahhh, well, another day goes by, and now it's dark again, I just can't quite apprehend this is still going on, we so want normality back, whatever happened to normal life - Feels strange to be so out of routine. The whole house is upset without our lovely Jacob, the Spins know he's not here, they are all so on edge bless them. I worry so much for Jacob, but all of your stories about how these dogs survive, and survive well, they really make us reliase that yes he can be okay out there, given the elements, he can make it back to us eventually. We just pray it's soon.   I think we owe a huge Thanks to Philippa, for getting us into Dogs Today, Thanks for that Pippa, and a huge Thanks to Kim and Abby for the breed notes too.   All this support is just fantastic, we don't know how we'd cope on our own, I know without your messages of encouragement and ideas we'd have long ago gone to peices.   We're both run down, but hey, it's expected to show somewhere, so we'll get over it and carry on, we have to for Jacob's sake. We can sob and feel sorry for ourselves later, when he's home.   There's a shoot tomorrow, but there are enough people on both who know us and will look out for Jacob, no point us being in the same place. Really right now, without a positive sighting, we are at a loose end as to using the traps etc, it's just we need so badly the second sighting to know he's still in this area. Just wishing for the mobile to ring and it'll be just that.   Also once we get the second sighting, the bitches in season would be a great idea, right now it's too difficult to know where to walk them, he could literally be miles away. <sigh>   Right, must go and get some food before we head off for the night  Thanks again everyone, we'll send you an update soon as we can     Thank YOU from us both xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a lovely boy!  Do hope he'll be home soon now.  If a trap is used (the hook type) you may need something quite heavy to hang on the hook such as a killed rabbit or heavy piece of cooked boned meat, esp for a large trap which is what Jacob would need.  There are treadle types which the food goes inside. Good luck.  Stay safe Jacob till you are home. xxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Everybody is behind you guys and we are all hoping and praying that he will soon be back home, safe and well and where he belongs.  You know that we are all here for you and when you need help, we will all be there.
Keep your strength up and keep positive, he cannot be far away from you.
Sending you all our positive thoughts and love

Thanks almar, this would certainly be an avenue worth exploring but unless there have been more sightings today (which I hope there has), there has just been the one sighting of Jacob in a very vast area so would be a bit tricky at the mo. If only we could narrow down the area he is in owners could concentrate on scenting, leaving food and moving towards using a trap in that location.....so come on Jacob show yourself, give us all a clue!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

have you considered setting up a humane trap?...if is being sightedin the same area this will give you an excellent chance of getting him home. if it is set up with some well cooked sausages hanging on the hook he will definately be tempted. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am not sure who will be more exhausted once you get Jacob home - Jacob from his great adventure or you, probably you and Jon I reckon!! Did the 3 rangers all see him at the same time or have they seen him on different occasions? If different occasions was it within the same area? Also, (sorry for all the questions!!) but don't suppose they said the dead rabbits were all in one rough area did they (or are they just all over in general)?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Tuesday 12.38 Hi Everyone,   Thanks all for you advice and good thoughts, we really need them ! We've scoured the whole of the Audley End House grounds as well as the surrounding areas, this is no mean feat, these areas are wide, and vast, Jacob could well be holed up there, keeping a low profile - especially as the perimeter of Audley End House is 99% high flint walling, It kind of makes us feel that maybe he feels safer around that area, there is a lot of water there as well as large food source. The rangers did say that there had been a larger amount of dead rabbits around, so maybe he's using them as a food source. We established that yes it was definitely 100% Jacob,- something we needed to do, and between 3 rangers they all said definitely. He is apparently very skinny, those that know him know he is very slight in build anyway so he doesn't have much to lose. So, today we've been out very early and been dominating the area he was spotted and immediate areas closeby. It's so hard to have been so near, but now feeling oh so far, it's 7 days he's been out now, we just want our boy back home where he belongs. We're really waiting on another sighting, have postered more and more posts, lamposts, farms, barns, anywhere we can poster, we have done so. Might consider the bbq smell trick tonight, not sure..... I'll let you know anything else, sightings etc, but I haven't been able to read all of the emails, there's about 397 now ! I know you all care and are with us on getting him back, and I can't tell you how wonderful that feeling is. We just can't wait for the time when I can post a new email and say HE'S HOME ! Be back soon, Thanks everyone from both Jon and I xxxx    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Hapsberg for the update.....bumped up due to sighting. Fantastic news you have had a sighting of Jacob Jon and Shelley! Anyone local please keep a lookout in the Audley End area. Does this sighting mean he has crossed under the M11 and railway or is it still the Littlebury Green side? I hope your searching and posters in the area bring more sightings in now. Please do remember the advice on the scenting document I sent you - if you/search party see Jacob you must 'think dog'. He may not come to you as he would do normally......so no eye contact, low voices, low movements. Do not approach him, but if anything walk away....as difficult as that will be, he has got to trust you again. Approaching him will risk him bolting. Other owners in similar circumstances found lying on the floor to be a success too! Keeping my fingers crossed your search tonight is a success and with more posters/locals aware etc, the sightings will keep coming and it won't be long before Jacob is back. Come on Jacob, time to come home now boy. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

He has been spotted!! There is currently a search party in the Audley End area following a positive sighting there.  The people who saw him have said that Jacob is no longer wearing his collar and is looking very skinny. Fingers crossed that they find him.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have the local radio/newspapers done anything on Jacob?  This reaches a lot more people.  Also with a breed like this get people to keep checking the rescue homes in person, as they may have him logged as who knows what.  Everything still crossed for a good result.

I know it must be so difficult.....all your hard work and no sign of Jacob. But you need to 'recharge your batteries' as muns says or you'll burn yourselves out and then when the sightings come in it will be even more hard work. With the area being fairly vast and very rural Jacob could easily stay tucked up in safety I would imagine, without being seen, sometimes its a matter of time. As much as that is not what you want to hear I'm sure, and you want him home NOW (who wouldn't!), sadly the dogs have no concept of the worry and anguish they put their owners through while they are out there having a great adventure! Their 'survival skills' kick in and they find somewhere safe, near food and water (and there's lots of that at the mo!) and cope far better than you or I would ever imagine! That said, they are equally as happy to slip back in to domestic life and their home comforts when they are back.....so Jacob will be back grunting with content in his duvet! Stay strong, as I know you will. I have added Jacob to the list to be included in Countrymans Weekly mag - DL gets some space to appeal for missing dogs in it each week.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

HI There,I keep checking for news of Jacob, and can't believe that no-one has spotted him/rescued him yet. You will get him back I am sure of it; just keep positive; there ARE a lot of dog lovers out there who will be desperately keeping an eye out for him . We are too far away, but just keep positive, and the phone by your side !!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Saturday 9.05pm   Hi All many Thanks to everyone for their kind thoughts and for postering their area's, we have to keep our boys profile high, just in case someone has him. Still no real sightings, just a farmer that thinks he saw Jacob on Wednesday not long after he'd first gone missing. We all spent the whole of today (20 of us) searching through woods and feilds where the farmer thought that he's seen Jacob. Nothing seen by any of those taking part in the search, which has been very hard to take, and now as it's dark and freezing out, we find ourselves waiting for light agian to restart the search. I think we have about another 12-15 people tomorrow, but we'll concentrate on spending most of this manpower in postering further afield and flyers through doors. Someone just has to have seen Jacob, they just have to. we're missing him like crazy, the house isn't the same without him <sigh> Still, we have to carry on, and will never give up, anyone who has him should be quaking in their boots as his profile is getting higher and higher by the day thanks to the people and networking we have in place. It really does make you smile to know there are lots of good people in this cruel world. Thanks to everyone locally and nationally from Jon and I for the help and postering, means heaps, and I am hoping in my heart it'll lead to us getting him back safe and sound really soon. Will update you all tomorrow, keep our boy in your prayers and goof thoughts please Shelley x    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I agree totally with all Jotty has said below. In yesterday's weather he is going to be somewhere very sheltered. Wishing you every success today and I am starting a prayer chain for Jacob. So glad you have so many helpers-it lifts the spirits as well as increases awareness and area.

Great to hear you will have an army of helpers over the weekend. As I have said before, you really are doing great and I keep checking in hoping for a sighting or even better news to know he's home. He may be lying low at the moment, sometimes it does take a few days for the sightings to come in. Looking at the map, as I don't know that area myself, there seems to be several wooded areas - so plenty of places for Jacob to shelter in and hide away. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you all tomorrow. x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Friday 11.20pm Still nothing to report. We were lucky enough today that Jon went up in a small plane and viewd a birds eye view of the area he's been lost in, they were low enought to see very clearly, and he is nowhere in sight. We were gutted. Tomorrow we have 20 Spinone/Bracco people coming to help mass search. we just hope the dogs and the people searching can turn up and find him safe, otherwise we are going to be really worried. We have the same Sunday too, only not so many people, but every extra body helps increase the search and widens the possibilities. Be so wonderful to have him back in his duvet, all grunty with content. Nite all, will report tomorrow x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hopefully while you are getting soaked and frozen he is tucked up somewhere nice and warm! I know we spent days freezing looking for Bubles with no sign and then found later she had been in one of her sheltered haunts. So hoping for some definite sightings for you very soon.

The weather is our greatest obstacle right now, really heavy rain, sleet and it's SO windy here too. I fear for him out there I really do. Fingers crossed for something today, there are so many posters everywhere I have every hope today we'll hear something positive. Back later, thanks for the good vibes, boy we need them. Adverts in ad trader are free to place and I assume you could post in many areas with the various editions they have and maybe some of your local newspapersthis is something you might delegate to someone to action whilst you are out looking. I hope you get some sightings very soon. I know how unnerving this can feel but I assure you its not that unusual either. Sorry too far away to help on ground but sounds like you have a good team of helpers building.

11.40pm Thursday 22nd Thanks again everyone for your afvice and good vibes, we're encouraged this could be early days and he can be found. We've postered to our hearts content, only got back in at just before 11pm, we've covered a lot of ground today with both flyers and posters alike. Someone hopefully will call and say they've seen him, please please..... We're off out again tomorrow, and pleased to say that due to our two breeds being so rare, Spinone and Bracco, many of the wonderful people in those 2 breeds are collectively coming to mass search at the weekend. We want to do all we can to ensure Jacob remains "Too hot to handle" by anyone thinking they can market him i in the wrong hands (oh please not)....any nationwide highlighting ideas are gratefully received. We've tried local radio, and the exchange between groups on the net etc..... Well..... Will update you all tomorrow Hoping for those scatchs at the front door tonight...how wonderful would that be. Hi Shelley, sorry to hear you've no sightings of Jacob yet but as muns says it is still early days (thats meant to be of comfort!).  Now you have blitzed the area with posters hopefully you will get some calls and be able to establish exactly what sort of area he's in and then from there build up a pattern of his movements. You sound like you are working so very hard and doing a sterling job and thats what needs to be done! Funnily enough on my lunchtime walk today with my dog I saw the local Bracco Italiano from round here (think I may have mentioned him to you)......and saw how fast he covered the ground so totally know what you mean with Jacob! Glad you've followed the scenting advice and once the sightings start coming in you can get to work on the scenting in ernest......better prepare yourself to drink a lot!! Other good places to leave posters - post sorting office,  local postie as obviously out early hours. Also as very rural where you are, maybe there are some organised rambling events soon that could keep a look out for Jacob? Glad you've covered the livery yards too as the local horse riders will cover a good amount of ground and have a good view being up a bit higher! We're all keeping our fingers crossed for you and wishing Jacob home very soon. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi All, Thanks so much for all the good wishes and advice. Still no sgn of Jacob, and we've covered a large area today, both on foot through woods and farmland, and then driven round and postered every single village and shops, garages, farms, houses, liveries, schools, village halls, pubs, feed shops etc that w can think of. I have a feeling that Jacob has gone on quite a journey and travelled some huge distance, the sheer fact that he's not been seen is slightly unnerving. I just hope it's a question of time, and people geting to see the posters and reading the flyers through their doors and then thinking 'aha', or seeing him afterwards. This house feels empty without him, fingers crossed he might be on his way back, and we'll get a knock/scatch at the door tonight. Jo, we've done all that you said, the lemonade bottle was bursting (!) fingers crssd the scent works tonight, but it's forecasting 2" of rain here :-( We'll be driving around again tonight, and back out tomorrow Will keep up to date as best we can tomorrow. Thanks again Shelley  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

posters are the best thing you can be doing.........i cannot emphasize that enough!!!. make sure you tell postmen binmen and anyone else working in the area he went from..........they are there and often see things others don't. contact your local paper and tv/radio station............try and get them involved........... but definately put an advert in pets section lost and found with a photo and offer a reward. treat every day like day one and poster poster poster........... i don't know the area but if any of the following applies do it......... poster retail parks, supermarkets, train stations, bus stops/stations,petshops,public toilets, poo bins, schools, clubs, leisure centres, golf clubs,stables,farms.............. just get as many up as you can........... stop everyone you walk past and make them aware of what what has happended. i know it is like looking for a needle in a haystack.......... but the posters will give you much better odds of finding him......... they really work!!!. i wish you all the luck in the world.........and keep updating the site......the more effort you put in the more people will want to help you ((((((((((xxxxxxx)))))))))))Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi All Thank YOU to everyone offering help and advice, we can't thank you all enough. We've just had another drive round, it's still dark, and worst still cold, wet and windy. We're now getting increasingly worried of course. We've got our posters and flyers ready so will get those distributed far and wide today. We have lots of people offering to help too, so that is good. As soon as it's light we'll be back out looking. I phoned Dog warden, all vets yesterday, so hoping that maybe someone will have taken him in in the night and we'll hear early morning. Fingers Crossed. I should make folks aware that his collar was quite loose so may have come off. Otherwise it's a beige snakeskin effect with brass tags with vet and our no's on it. Spoken to owner who is still out searching for Jacob. Jacob ran off after a herd of deer earlier today.....he goes at quite a speed and covers a good amount of ground so could have got quite a distance away owner feels. Initially he headed, from Littlebury Green, in the Elmdon direction but he could have quite easily looped round either way so may have then been heading in the complete opposite direction. Owner has been searching the area extensively but as yet no sign of him. Jacob does know the area well and is a very clever boy so hopefully he may find his way home. Have advised owner on scenting and sent detailed instructions, he is also leaving the gate open so Jacob has access to the garden and advised to leave article of clothing with scent on near the gate. Jacob went missing in similar circumstances about a year and a half ago and after 14hrs missing he found his way home and 'knocked' on the door at 3am (see I told you he was a clever boy lol!)......lets hope its a repeat of that again and he is home safe very soon. Have stressed the importance of postering around the area, especially as at the moment we don't  know which area he is in. Owner has got people coming to help search/poster tomorrow but if anyone is local, if you could poster in your area that would really be such a great help and very much appreciated. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Owner, sorry to see lovely Jacob is missing.  Thanks for registering his details on DL, we will do all we can to help you in your search.  Brilliant you have supplied photo/s of him, especially with him being a breed not commonly seen.  You need to poster poster poster the area as much as possible, we cannot stress enough the importance of the postering.  Posters can be printed by selecting Dog Poster 1 just above Dog Information (you must be logged in).    Contact DW's, rescues, vets and leave a poster (you can find vets in the area by clicking on the logo right hand side just underneath Latest Missing photo).  Dogs can be rehomed after 7 days, try and visit rescues do not rely on phone calls alone.  Great he is Chipped do contact the Chip Co and report him missing and check your details are up to date.  Please update us on who has been contacted i.e. DW's etc and if you have started postering.  You can leave a comment by selecting  Add a comment  just above Comments.  Good luck and hope he is found soon.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
