Summer spent a few days in the care of the Newbury Dog Warden and was then transfered to Vigil GSD rescue. I picked her up from the kennels near Newbury at the end of last week to foster her on behalf of Vigil. She is a lovely happy, friendly girl and it was an absolute pleasure to look after her. After a day of calls Ive tracked the vets who have this dog on their books plus the previous address. Phone number not correct. however with the help of Thames valley police the ex girl friend at this address has confirmed the dogs belonged to her ex but has no idea where he is ( or cares!) It is possible although very strange that he no longer wanted the dogs and changed details so they were not traced ( forgetting previous records are held) in view of all this infomration it looks as if Summer is in best place- being cared for awaiting a new forever home which this lovely dog deserves.

Ive updated a second picture sent on via DW. with this information This female G.S.D was eventually captured on 29 January 2009 and is now in the care of West Berkshire Council - contact Zo? Campbell 01635 519386. Many people have offered to give her a home. She is microchipped and her name is 'Summer' and the owner was registered to a public house in the Theale area. West Berkshire have made enquiries but the person is not known at the address.

Sorry forgot to add that when speaking to the warden she said that she has picked up quite a few Lurchers in the last few weeks so if anyone is missing a lurcher perhaps you should contact the warden. She covers quite a big area.

It is such a huge relief to see this dog finally caught. The caretakers of Deanfield School managed to catch it around 10.20 this morning. I had already arranged to meet up with Yvonne at 10.30 to go and have a look for it& just as I was on my way Yvonne called to say that it was in the school playing grounds and the caretakers were trying to catch it & very shortly after that it was finally captured. We were allowed to go into the caretakers office to see her and stayed with her until the Dog Warden arrived. She is such a sweetie and really friendly and has obviously been allowed to sleep on the settee in her previous home as she took full advantage of their comfy settee. Her limping wasn't caused by any broken bones but some skin had been sliced off one of her pads so it must have been really sore. When the warden scanned her to our surprise she was microchipped, the address was to a pub in Reading. She's called Summer and is 2yrs old. However when the warden got the address details from the micro chip and called she was told that they owned 2 dogs but not this GSD. It now looks like she will be kept in Kennels for the 7 days just incase an owner comes forward and if not will be put up for rehoming. She was so adorable that one of the Caretakers might be interested in adopting her, infact quite a few people who came into the caretaker office to see her said they would be happy to have her and Flick has also contacted the warden to say the GSD rescue would be happy to find a home for her - all in all whoever gets her will be very lucky.

When was the deceased man found there is not a possibility she belonged to him is there. Congratulations to all concerned for getting her.  Lets hope after all this she finds a loving home. Poor thing.

Met up with Lydia, Flick & co this evening to help with search ( also enlisted my Son and some work colleagues but no sighting !! Going to call local paper tomorrow and see if they will run story so a wider audience is targeted. May even get some-one come forward who knows of a neighbour,etc, who's GSD is suddenly absent (thinking abandonment). Also, may shame Dog Warden into being a little more helpful. Will get paper to promote Doglost and its fantastic work too. Good idea the sticking to one feeding point with the whistle association, I think we all need to agree on the place the food is left and get some whistles. Happy searching all, Siobhan

Met up tonight and we all had a look.  I had no luck unfortunately but left some food out as what I left yesterday was gone, it is hard to know though whether that was taken by a fox or the beautiful boy.  I have had a look on the Lost Dog section of BIGGSD.com and someone was followed this evening by a dog that they couldn't see clearly.  They left food for him and he continued to follow at a distance so if it is him he is being fed at least.  I really really hope someone manages to get him soon the poor love.  It does appear he is covering a lot of ground in the Sulham Woods area and isn't just sticking to one part of the woods. I am going to go up during the day on Friday and see if I can spot him.  Will keep you updated.

Hi Yvonne thanks for the last sighting at 6pm. what direction along long lane was he going? I've been putting food out for this dog at the back of the school on the field side by the wired fence so that may be why he's being spotted in that area. If you live near Long Lane would you be able to go out searching aroung 5/6pm or if you spot him again would you put it on this site just so we can get an idea of his movements please. \Some of us are meeting tonight at 6pm at the main car park ( where the deceased man was found) and will be looking in the field opposite as that was where he was spotted at 4.30 yesterday. For a dog with a limp he seems to be covering a bit of ground no matter how poorly he looks. I will call doglost tomorrow to try to speak to you.

I also saw this dog last night at 6pm walking along the road at the top of long lane , but as i approached it ran in to the woods. Then this morning at 8 o'clock it was on the otherside of the fence at the bottom of the garden.which is in the grounds of Denefield School. We have two dogs so happy to leave out some food if any help to you,My husband walks our dogs at night but he is yet to come across it. Do you think this may have anything to do with the male who was found in the car last friday. Just a thought.

Thank you so much for all the helpful advice. I've met up with the lady who was close to catching the dog yesterday, she said he's looking totally exhausted, thin and she's very worried that it's looking like he might just give up on the will to live. He was still able to get away but is limping badly.  I spoke to Flick and we've arranged to meet up this evening to do a torch light search of the area he was last seen. The stable owner who has said we can use her grounds as a feeding station sadly wasn't there when I called with the food so will try again this evening. As far as the trap goes, myself & heidipie and another would be willing to do  round the clock monitoring. Heidiepie and I went to look for him this morning but - no sign although once again the food had gone. I really do hope this dog is caught because I fear he won't last too much longer

Keeping the feeding position the same would help and try to also put the food down around the same time.One suggestion that has been used in the past is when you put the food down- give 2 or 3 blasts on a whistle. Place food and leave. the dog may then associate the whistle with a good thing- food and this could help later when trying to catch. This dog is obviously extreemly nervous ( typical GSD) so any approach will need to be done with care. A GSD will bark (might seem to look aggressive) but it is their way of saying back off i dont know you. it will take time and patience but it can be achieved. If a regular feeding pattern is established we could then think about a trap- but it will depend on the area/siutable location/ whether someone is available to check etc.   It might be an idea for both Flick and LYDNSYD to liase together so nothing duplicated. I have emailed you both so you have contact details if needed.

I was at Sulham Woods (the entrance on the left when you are heading down Sulham Lane from Tilehurst to Sulham) this afternoon at around 16:30 and I saw this lovely boy.  He is very scared so getting close to him is nigh on impossible.  I have spoken to the dog warden for Reading but unfortunately it is Newbury area.  John at BIGGSD has also posted this on the LOST DOGS section of BIGGSD.  My friend and I went back tonight and left some food for him at the entrance to the woods straight in front of you at the end of the pathway and also at the broken wire fence to the right hand side just into the woods there.  He's a really pretty black and tan boy and is definitely limping at the moment so possibly has been clipped by a car.

Just got back from looking for this dog but no luck, the food had gone so left some more in the usual place and also some a bit further along this time although I'm not sure if the dog or another animal is eating it. The dog walkers I met hadn't seen it this morning but I was told that earlier on last week someone had managed to contain it in their garden and while waiting for the dog warden to come it unfortunately escaped - so near!! I also spoke to a lady who had been told that a GSD dog had been seen tied up to a tree, possibly abandoned around the time of the 1st sighting. I asked her to confirm with her friend exactly where her friend had seen this dog and if possible to log it on this site. I called in at Stanmore Farm which is where the dog was seen yesterday morning and spoke to the lady who has a horse stable there, she confirmed she does see the dog running past and if necessary would allow a trap to be placed in the area.

It is Sulham Woods and it has also been spotted twice today in the fields off Long Lane.  It has been sighted by a number of people since at least last Saturday and has been in fields and woods on both sides of Sulham Hill.  Dog is very scared and runs away if approached by either a person or another dog.

Hi, I think the 'area' must be a typo error - I reckon it should read Sulham Woods. I walk my dogs there every day so will keep a look out & pass on the message to other dog walkers. Do you know what part of Sulham Woods this dog was seen?
