- Wow what an amazing effort by so many people. There are, thankfully, more good people than bad out there.
Enjoy life in Wiltshire Ben there are plenty of great places for long walks. - 2022-06-12 15:41 Majorjet (Jan) - Area Co-ordinator - Liverpool/Merseyside, North West

- With his lead still attached, he'd finally slowed down and was waiting for more food. Heather had seen what was happening and stopped the officers approaching to allow me the time to grab the lead and get Ben calm. Unfortunately, I'd ran out of chicken and Ben was hungry, luckily another local volunteer Sally Bate, was able to go to my van and grab more food to pass to me. I got my foot on the trailing lead and waited for his reaction, avoiding eye contact. The sardines arrived and Ben quickly devoured 2 tins, I picked the lead up and held on for dear life, maintaining feeding until he realised he was safe enough not to pull away
The traffic officer who'd been at the farm also gave up his breakfast of a peanut butter sandwich to Ben. As Heather and the 2 officers then approached, I gave the lead to the dog handler, which allowed me to get more food and water for Ben to keep him calm
Heather luckily had a large crate in her car, Ben was gently persuaded to get in by NW police and the door was shut, he was safe at last. The message was sent to reopen the M6 and the police went back their duties. The police were unaware that there were volunteers available in the area that do what we do and we gave our contact details to them for future use
Heather and I took Ben to nearby Cheshire Dogs Home, and the plan was for Ben to spend the night there to allow Danny the time to come back and collect. Obviously Danny wanted to get back to collect him straight away and with the dogs home closing at 5, I agreed to look after Ben in my van until they arrived later on Saturday
Firstly thank you to Howcotts farm for allowing the entourage onto your property, 3 volunteers vehicles, a police traffic car, police dog unit and a group of strangers you'd never met, also for providing a safe area and water for Ben
Secondly to NW police for the prompt response, slowing down the motorway traffic immediately, for keeping him away from running into live traffic and assistance throughout. This was the 2nd dog they'd assisted with that morning, the first one a bit further up on the M66 which they managed to secure
Thirdly Cheshire Dogs Home for allowing us safe haven for Ben, providing us a safe area to let him out of the crate, to have a drink and to be calm, for donating a crate to Danny so he was secure on his journey back to Wiltshire, and for checking his microchip after Heather had scanned him, offering him a kennel for the night if needed. Thanks also for the coffee and the dog treats
To the local community, thank you for sharing the post and alerting the local volunteers and for not flooding the area searching
Last but never least, Heather Cake for all you do for any animal missing in your area and beyond. Your calm nature relaxed the situation. You made all the right calls to obtain the necessary assistance to allow the safe capture of Ben. Giving up most of your day when you had so much to do already. Thank you also for sweet-talking Lymm services into extending my parking beyond the 2 hour limit. 2 days extension was a bit pessimistic but appreciated nonetheless. Always a pleasure to work with you, thank you again - 2022-06-12 15:36 Majorjet (Jan) - Area Co-ordinator - Liverpool/Merseyside, North West
- CROSS POSTED Great update on fb by Nick Smith:
Bens adventure
On Saturday morning, 11th June at 4am, Ben's owner had collected him from a family member and was en route from Leeds to Wiltshire to start his new life in his forever home
They stopped at Lymm services around 4am to allow Ben a toilet break but Ben saw this as an opportunity to explore the area for a while. After all, its a nice area, so why not?
However, for those that don't know Lymm services, it's wedged in between the M56 and the M6 and there is never a quiet time of day on those roads for traffic. Ben, failing to read the green cross, code bolted through a hedge and within 10 seconds, was on the slip road of the M56, deciding that wasn't dangerous enough decided to head for the M6. Luckily he chose to go over the top via a roundabout than risk 6 lanes
Danny his owner tried to keep up but couldn't, ripping his arms and legs to shreds going through heavy foliage to try and keep eyes on Ben.
Ben ran into Howcotts farm just the other side of the M6, into the fields and out of sight. For 6 hours Danny searched relentlessly but no further sightings
Danny doesn't drive and had got a lift with a friend to collect Ben, but the friend had to get back home to Wiltshire for another emergency
Danny had already alerted all local Facebook groups of his plight and many volunteers were already aware of Ben's plight and had started to share the details
Heather Cake who lives locally arrived in the area within minutes of the request and started doing what she does best, calming the situation and ensuring people weren't shouting, chasing or trying to catch Ben as being so close to the M6, one wrong move with a scared dog could have been fatal
Heather alerted NW Police and Highways Agency immediately, then contacted me in case Ben needed trapping
I set off from home, called in to Morrisons for a hot roast chicken ready to put in the trap and arrived at the farm
Within my 16 minute journey, the situation had taken a turn, NW police were at the farm, Ben had moved from his safe area in one corner of the field and was at the motorway edge of the field, less than 20 feet from the live lane of the M6
Highways immediately slowed the M6 down to 30mph, a traffic car was on the hard shoulder with the blue lights on and officers stood by waiting in case he shot through the hedge, 2 other officers were in the field trying carefully to guide Ben along the edge of the field back towards the farm
Heather was already with them and between them, had managed to keep Ben moving but he wasn't slowing down, running hell for leather towards the farm, and me
If he got past me, he was back out on to the road, left turn, straight back towards the motorway. Bring on the chicken. I got down on the ground as I saw Ben approaching and started throwing peices of hot chicken in his direction hoping to catch his attention and slow him down. It worked. Whilst he was eating quicker than I could break it up and throw it, he was getting closer. At one point he took a piece from my hand and mistook my thumb for a chicken wing
With his lead still attached…….. CONTINUED IN ABOVE POST - 2022-06-12 12:26 Vizslamum
