Misty is a nervous rescue dog who escaped her owners holiday accommodation in the Chapel St Leonards area of Lincolnshire on 13th September 2022. Over the next few weeks a team tracked and got Misty feeding and trapping attempts began. Sadly as Misty had been trapped previously she did not entertain a Vulcan, larger box trap or an enclosure trap so on 7th October 2022 CCUK were contacted to review the use of Chemical Immobilisation to bring her back into safety.
Chemical Immobilisation is not a ‘magic wand’ and there is a process that needs to be followed to plan for a successful operation. The first part of that process is enablement of the team to review the lost dogs footage to assess the behaviour in their feeding zone. This enables us to understand the lost dog and their environment to plan for a successful dart deployment. However, there was a huge risk to Misty and that was the end of season firework displays that were coming up across the area therefore the decision was taken to attend asap to provide Misty with an opportunity to be brought back into safety.
On Friday 14th October the team made the journey across country and by 7pm radio silence began. Shortly after darkness fell a live camera alerted us that Misty had exited her safe space and was on the move. She showed us how intelligent she was as she began to risk assess and noticed a new scent in her environment in that she tracked the path one of the team had taken to place the live camera and scented straight to it. She then disappeared into the darkness.
As the hours rolled by the busy arcades and pubs began to close down, the area fell silent and the street lights switched off. As the last of the pub dwellers made their way home another live camera showed Misty exiting the beach and she made a beeline for the caravan site. Another alert of motion, Misty was at the dart zone and a dart was successfully deployed shortly after midnight.
The team began to scan the immediate risk areas such as the promenade road and once the all clear was given that Misty was not on the promenade, the tracking process began. However, Misty exited the dart zone in such a way that showed she was likely heading to her safe space via the most direct route, across the ditch and field.
The tracking device took us to the field and Misty was located from a distance using the thermal imagining technology. The team descended across the ditch and Misty was safely contained approximately 350m away from the dart zone within 15 mins of a dart being successfully deployed.
Misty then stayed with the team overnight until her rescue could bring her back into their care.
Thank you to the caravan park for allowing access to do what needed to be done for Misty.
Thank you to Zoe for supporting Misty locally and for feeding her well.
Thank you to Lisa of Beautys Legacy page for supporting Misty throughout and for recognising that some dogs require a different method in order to be brought into safety.
Thank you for making that call that saved her.
Thank you to Jennie at Mayflower Sanctuary in whose hands we know Misty will be safe.
