Thanks for your post Liz. I spend many walks 'instructing' my youngest dog to get her nose out of holes, she tends to go that bit too far. I worry that she will meet a badger nose to nose but then too often think to myself, well I've never actually known anyone whose dog was attacked by a badger ! though I've heard stories of course. I shall steer clear of Bookham for the foreseeable future. Very big holes at Headley though and probably at most of the places in the countryside around here ! We could well be confined to the local park !  Much love to Max, what a terrible trauma for him, physically and mentally. May he continue to make good progress, thank goodness he has such a loving family to care for him.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just had to go into vet's on an unrelated matter but asked how Max was doing.  Still a long road to recovery but at least he's at home with his family.  Vet thinks it could well have been a badger, or two, so just wanted to make all of you aware that there are badgers in this area and it's the breeding season so be wary if your dogs go near setts.  We're all keeping our paws and fingers crossed that we will see Max out and about again soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Email in Admin Message from DL helper, Patsy: I spoke to Max's owner, Morag,  this afternoon. He is home, but still very shocked and subdued. He has about 50 puncture wounds on his head, his tail is very badly damaged with severed nerves, and his rear end has been badly bitten. However, there is no internal injury, all his organs are OK, he is not incontinent and his mobility is not affected.
He will probably have to have his tail amputated (vet decided to postpone this as Max too shocked to cope with operation after his accident). However, he should make a full recovery after lots of rest and TLC. Had his first meal and drink yesterday and Morag has been sleeping on the floor with him and her husband has been carrying him
outside to pee. He is clearly a much-loved boy. Apparently vet (Cobham Park) was just brilliant and Morag is full of praise for him and it was good she could get Max there so quickly, otherwise he may not have made it. Hope to see you out and about again one day soon Max . . . . PxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So very sorry to hear that poor Max had been so dreadfully injured, thank goodness he was found when he was. This is a walk I often do with my dogs and probably would have done yesterday but for the fact that one of them has been very ill. She is recovering well now and I pray that Max will do the same. Thinking of him and his family and sending much love and healing thoughts to you all. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I was really pleased to hear that Max had been found but extremely sorry to hear of his injuries. It is good to know he is getting the care and attention he needs.  (We live in Bookham, so not far away at all.)   I shall watch anxiously for news of his progress and send my love and very best wishes for his recovery.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

up date:   Max's owner, Morag, has just called me back. Max has been found, but
is seriously injured and is at the vet. He seems to have been attacked
by another dog. Apparently, they were walking on the lane from
Downside to Bookham Common when Max ran off after rabbits. After two
hours' searching, Morag received a call from one of the farms saying
Max had been found but, but had clearly been attacked by another
animal, presumably a dog. Poor Max. Morag will keep me posted. Px
