Thank you Jimi for all your help. Honestly, everyone was simply fantastic in the search of Ranger. The wardens in the area were just excellent, the car park attendant as well. The public and the residents of the area are all to be thanked. A special thanks to the family from Cambridge who were the ones to find Ranger. If there is anyone I have not mentioned then please know how much I thank you in the search for Ranger! He is quite a famous boy here! I promise he will get to go again one day but he will be on a harness. I have taken photos on the day of his return to me of us both sitting together. Unfortunately I need to get a new USB cable and have this ordered. So I'll not forget to come back and put this photo on. What a special place this is. Thanks to you Jimi for that fantastic pic of Ranger from a mobile phone from my poster. The family from Cambridge commented to me on how they liked my poster. I have taken some down and have more to take down that only my friend Rad knows where he put them. I thank Rad very much in all his help in finding Ranger. Our walk on the beach on the 16th together with me and my dogs turned into a living night mare. For days and hours on end all we did was search and search for ranger hours into the night. Ranger stays by my side now and comes when he is called, hard to believe its the same dog who just kept on running with the wind, the sun, and the sea. I only wished he'd done that when he was frolicking around but I guess he was having too much fun!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Now home from Norfolk and delighted that Ranger was found safe on the dunes there. We walked miles but everyone knew about Ranger and it was just a matter of time before he was found.  Thank goodness it was not too late.  English Nature wardens were wonderful looking out for him and they cover all the ground out there continuously to keep a watch on the wildlife and nesting birds.  For this reason it would not have been possible to use a trap or scent in the normal way.  There were plenty of dead rabbits in the area and fresh water in the dykes so these probably kept him going.  Thank you to everyone for your help and stay safe now little man. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hey every one.I wish to thank each and every one of you for all your comments and ideas. The BBQ thing oh I thought of that too. he he he. I have breaking news for all of you. At 1735 hours I received a call that they believe they have RANGER on Holkham beach on a sand dune. He was found collapsed looking exhausted, dehydrated and hungry. I asked the description and they seemed to think it was Ranger. I said it sounds like my son I'll be there as fast as possible (I was in Ipswich at the time, work related, giving me a 2 hour journey. My friend was in Burnham Staith Ovary putting up missing posters and I called him to go over quickly to Holkham beach. I said if its Ranger he needs fresh water asap and a something to eat. My friend confirmed about an hour later that it was Ranger. A barrage of cars (3) brought Ranger home to me. Ranger arrived home to me at 1930 hours. He is doing well, he's had fresh water and I'm giving him small portions of food. He is enjoying all the goodies I've got in for him like ham, spam, turkey, chicken. It is nothing short of a miracle. He traveled back from Burnham Staith Ovary marsh area back to the central area of Holkham beach (3) miles back. Is he special - oh yes he is and always will be! He'll get a health check over by the vet in the morning. I only see a small scrape on the nose and one tick on shoulder found and removed. He is very happy to be home. Its hard to believe this sweet little boy has caused all this havoc to all of our lives these last few days. The couple who found him were from Cambridge and they were only too pleased to bring this boy home to me as it was enroute home for them. I rushed home as fast as possible from Ipswich and had thought we'd just about meet at the same time. But of course there were all kinds of people on the beach meeting ranger and overjoyed with his finding. oh my goodness I am the a lucky woman indeed. I hope and pray that others missing their pets will soon find them and will have the support of the public as I have had. there was recently a talk show program on BBC radio 2 discussing whether or not missing posters work - YES, I can confirm they do work!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just a thought - have you asked Heart radio to mention it - also KLFM (King's Lynn) and Radio Norwich.  Also you could ring the Eastern Daily Press and get his details in there. Maybe print off some business card size flyers - then people are more likely to keep them on them than the big ones - and poster everywhere possible around there - the more people that are made aware the better the chance of catching him. Although he will be finding food to eat - it will only be bits and bobs and he will slow down eventually - it may just take a little time and patience - very hard when you just want to get him home with you.  All his natural instincts will have kicked in by now - remember they are descended from wolves and are survivors. Don't give up on Ranger.  I will tell everyone I know to keep an eye out, but unfortunately don't get that way very often. Come home soon Ranger. xxx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I will cross post to The Hunting Life as they have people all over the place. One thing I will say after reading the thread, darting/tranquilisors are not a safe option, it was thought about with Koko but judging an animals weight & what they will do when running scared is more dangerous than it sounds. Dogs will normally return to the last place they remembered, if feeding could be set up as near as possible it will be easier. The dogs will normally run of & stay running for a couple of days just because they can. Koko did the same, but Ranger is a domestic dog & all dogs will become creatures of habit. Food & scenting the area will draw him in- he's a working dog & his nose will always get him into & out of trouble. There's lots of food around & always water.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There is a public road to Holkham Beach, off the a149 and opposite the Victoria Hotel(Worth putting a poster in their lobby) Also worth postering on the hut where the man takes the money for parking as so many dog walkers and also horse riders come down here. A lot of dog walkers walk from Wells to Holkham through the pine forests Also worth postering Titchwell Bird Watching Centre as there are usuallly masses of twitchers who go to Holkham way with high powered binoculars!! Also a poster at the start of the Peddars way As other people have said hand out posters to all dog walkers if you are able to go to the area. Good luck  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm probably 'teaching a grandmother to suck eggs' but I've got 2 springer/collies and I've now learned that I have to walk away from them rather than follow them, otherwise I'd be there all night!  It is a game but I think that as long as they know I'm close by they follow.  I realise it's different when they've been out for a while but maybe when you get a sighting, take a bbq and sit and wait to see if he comes over.  The advice given on this site about sitting quietly and avoiding eye contact seems to work.  Unfortunately, I'm too far away to lend a hand but wish you luck xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hey Netty, I wish to say thanks for trying to help, pleasea dont take it that your comments are useless, I do know that all wish to help me the best way possible. I am very experienced with dogs and have owned dogs all of my life. My mother use to rescue dogs and I grew up with 14 of them. When my mother passed away I promised her I would care for her 9 dogs. I have been responsible for about 42 dogs or so in my life and of various breeds. I know my children well. Ranger was born at my home. Ranger will be on life time detention when I can get him and his siblings well not have the opportunity of visiting the area unless on a HARNESS rather than collar and lead and not be let off period! One must always live and learn!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Reynard, just spotted your comment about cross posting to the spring thing forum. Can you provide a link please so I can click and check that out. Thank you for doing that. I googled but could not come up with anything. Thank you for all help you can give and comfort at this time while I'm worrying over my son, Ranger. Ranger he is extremely intelligent and he bats his eye lids and squints in defiance. He also has a habit of smiling when you bend down and say come here boy softly and gently while at the same time his tail madly wags. I cannot get down to the area today, a friend is going down today to put posters up in the burnham staithe area, this friend stated and the only one I've been able to call upon these last few days has informed that he will not be available to help due to work commitments for the next week. So, I am on my own. I cannot make it there today due to work commitments being a good 150 miles away from that area. My work commitments will enable me to get down to the area tommorrow and tuesday I'll be camping out over night probably with my son Sheldon. I quickly need a siting so I know where he is. Friday is 3 miles from point of initial run off within 3 days if he is gonna keep movements like that he could be anywhere right now just anywhere! I am dying inside and desperate for news. Now as I stated earlier I have already thought of netting but I dont believe anyone can fling it far enough like 1/2 a football field to get him and I dont have one and know no one with one and dont have a team.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am sorry my comments were so useless, but i was only trying to help. You will be surprised at the simple things that work are not thought of because the owner is just not "thinking straight".  I cannot help physically so thought you would like to know someone was at least thinking of you. I do really home that you get Ranger back soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I really feel fo you looking at the expanse of area that Ranger is running in, but it is early days and he will tire as he gets hungry, this in turn will cause him to show him self to people more, as the owners of many dogs who have been on the run for a while will tell you it is often a case of patience and returning daily to the spot that he ran from, scenting the area daily and leaving jus enough food to keep him in a safe area, read the story of Koko , her owner was 3.5 hours from home - but stayed put and with amazing patience and deterimation she is now home. Darting was discussed with Koko to but this is also fraught with danger as the animal will take along time to become drowsy and if you do not know it's exact route in terrain such as Holkham beach this in itself could prove to have a disasterous outcome . Is there a parish council in Holkham that could help with some mainstay people on the ground ? who could keep watch on the area an plot and map Rangers movements, this may give a clue to where he has built his 'den'  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My childs energy will not die down. He is strong and will not start suddenly limping around slowly. If his instincts of survival kick in then he can nibble on the plentiful dead rabbits in the area and will forever more remain at large which is most sickening to my stomach. The visions of him starving to death are killing me I can assure you and the visiions of his never ending strength and not being able to stop him as there are no barriers are killing me too. The visions of no team helping me to contain him in the bush he is hiding in and what to do to get physical people to help me is killing me too. I dont live in that area. I am 44 miles away from holkham beach and 50 miles away from burnahm staithe ovary. I dont have a helicopter to rush in. A couple of locals are doing their best to keep watch. One local informed me he had his border collie do the same thing and the dog was only eventually got when it was seen running down a road and all cars stopped and it went under a car so they were able to get it out. So as you can see the picture here and the area the trouble I am having and the help I need is indescribable.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

HI everyone great for getting comments here. I've not had a single call yesterday but there are no posters up in the area of burnham staithe ovary, it is 3 miles west of point where he took off. Arrangements are being made to get posters up in the area immediately. Yes, of course I've tried taking another dog down with me. My basset hound Sheldon and him are great mates but Sheldon did not pick up on his presence when I saw him approximately 10.30 pm in the evening running down the beach. When I called his name he ran for the sand dunes. I do not mean a taser gun period not that at all. Professional hunters use tranquiliser guns like dear hunting or elephant and they must be available due to professional organisations having to help ie washed up creatures. I suggested capturing with netting now in order to do this wwell as I am only one person I need a team to help. Now I had the best opportunity to capture him on friday when he was in the middle of the marsh. I was on my way and had to drive 100 miles to get there all knew I was on  my way and gave approximate time of arrival and all had abondoned ship. One gentleman however did point out the area where had been seen and he walked over to search but no sign of dog. I walked around from highest sand dunes to keep watch from all sides marsh side and beach side no sign. Then suddenly like on the wednesday he makes himself appear about 10.30. He ran for the bushes and I searched for 2 hours with a torch. I know he was hiding in the bushes somewhere which is the best opportunity to capture him. It is not possible to capture him in the open period. His a baby playing the greates game of "Catch me if you can in his life". Due to the rains yesterday I know he was able to get some water other than tasting salty. Yes I've bought lots of goodies to start dropping in the area but there is no guarantee he will get this food and not some other dog running around. Its a big area we all know that and I know that. I am look forward to receiving some physical action and not just virtual talk on my child!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I think that its going to be a game till he starts to get tired and hungry. After a few days of no food then tempting him with some nice smelly food would be the best option. As said earlier giving chase only adds to the fun and you really need to walk away- may at this point dropping some tasty food- but not too much- enough to get attention but not to satisfy his hunger. I would think the use of a stun gun would be best avoided. I presume you mean like a police taser- settings to give correct amount for a young dog would be difficult and I would not like to think what too much would do. Also they would need to be very close. Looking at the area from google map it is so open. A dog trap would not be an option normally taken in open spaces- as could not be left- but it would be an option to think about when hunger takes over. Baited with strong smelly food it would need to be set and watched ALL THE TIME when you know he is in the area. Hopefully it would only take one attempt if he entered. Another option if you can get close enough would be to have some large nets at the ready ( with some help) maybe it could be thrown over as he runs by.   CJLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry to hear you are having problems getting Ranger back, have you tried taking another dog along with you, it may make him come out to play, and when the other dog is called back hopefully Ranger will come back with him, it is worth a try. Also if you chase after a dog they think its a game, so try running in the other direction calling his name, take some nice smelly food with you to help tempt him to follow you. Good luck hope you have him soon, wish i was nearer to help but in Essex. Will be watching this space!!!!!!!!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello, this is Rangers Mum. I wish to say well done for getting Rangers pic up here and it has come out fantastically considering photo taken from mobile phone from poster. Ranger was at burnham staithe ovary in the marsh area yesterday. He spent all afternoon and up till 12.30pm on the marsh. He was hiding in the bushes, I saw  him and he ran and I spent 2 hours searching bushes with a torch without luck. Being collie/springer cross his greatest game is "catch me if you can". Now I the owner cannot catch this dog. My yard is fenced so he is contained. He is free now! The only way to capture him is to contain him. If found hiding in bush then he could be captured. I have not had a call today of any sightings period but there are no posters of him hanging up in the burnham staith ovary area. It is imperiative my son be captured and returned home to me. I can only do this with the help of others. Sightings alone cannot capture him. He must be cornered. So if anyone knows a professional dog catcher great. May have to resort to a stun gun. He is fast, he has wings on his feet. He has a Degree in Hiding and in Avoiding Capture. He is very clever and very wary of people. To his mum this is the greatest game of hide and seek in his life! Yes, the pic of Ranger is when he was 4 to 5 months old, he is now 10 months old but looks pretty much the same. It was the best photo I had showing his markings. My grandmother had a stroke a few months ago so as a result of this family upset there has been litttle time for photo taking but it is very clearly apparent his markings you cannot mistake the dog and everyone recognises him when they seem him as the dog being looked for. Just need to get all to understand its not a case to think I can show up every time he is seen and call him over to me he will run from me and from anyone. its the type of breed he is and he is such a juvenile delinquent this is such a terrific game. One thing I do know he has been able to get water to drink today instead of just having salty sea water! So if anyone knows how to capture a dog on the run then great would appreciate all the help. A stun gun I believe is necessary if I'm going to get him back safe and sound if one can be within range. It's sickening to know the area where your dog is but none can catch  him and he is not willing to be caught. so all help is appreciated. Ranger is living up to his name at present playing ranger, while his mum here is sick with worry and so wiery from trying so hard to get him without luck, its totally heart breaking.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you've lost your dog.  Have you put "missing" posters up with a pic of him?  There's more chance of someone catching him for you if they've seen he's missing!  If he hasn't been castrated, he may well have gone off in search of a bitch in season.  Have you contacted the dog warden, rescue centres, and kennels?  Good luck, I hope he's home soon!  xx
