Dear all, Thank you so much for your lovely messages. Its amazing the effect these extraordinary animals have on our lives and the massive irreplaceable hole that they leave behind. I was so very lucky to have Sambo for 8 wonderful years, he was the most fantastic dog who was always so full of life, happiness and up for any adventures that came his way.  It goes without saying that he's missed so very much by not only myself but my dear friends Alec and Isabel to whom he went with every day whilst I was at work. Thankfully I did find him, although it wasn't the fairytale ending I had hoped for at least I can take comfort knowing that he's home now, sleeping peacefully in our beautiful garden surrounded by all those that loved and cared for him each and every day.  Thank you to everyone at Dog Lost, you have been the most terrific support. I will endeavour to support your charity and help you all out whenever and however I can.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just come back from a weeks break and logged on to see whats going on, and at the moment can hardly see to type with tears running down my face.I am so sorry for your loss, i did not know you or Sambo but just reading the postings you could tell how much you loved him, and that a huge part of your life is now missing . You do at least have an end, however painful, not like some of us that spend years not knowing and never stop looking.  R.I.P Sambo   god bless you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

iIwas so sad to hear from Carolynn last night.  Sambo was obviously a much loved friend to her - and no-one could have done more to find him.  I am just so relieved that Carolynn has found out that he has gone to Rainbow Bridge and I am sure he has left a huge pawprint on her heart. Well done Doglost and everyone on here for everything you do.     Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Stood Beside Your Bed Last Night
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear.
"Its me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here"
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore.
I want to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you that I’m not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for the key,
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It’s me".
You looked so very tired and then you sank into a chair,
I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.
Its possible for me to be so near you everyday,
to say to you with certainty "I never went away".
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew
That in the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.
The day is over I smile and watch you yawning
and say, " Good Night, Sweet Dreams, God Bless,
I’ll see you in the morning".
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide
I’ll rush to greet you and well stand together side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there’s much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out; then come home and be with me.

Its with great sadness and heavy heart that I write this, but having heard from Carolynn this morning, Sambo was found last night further down the river. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported Carolynn during this terrible ordeal, but we all know she has been the most fantastic owner and could not have done more, and Sambo would have got himself back to her if he had ben able. I'm sure many freinds have been made during these weeks, and Carolynn hopefuly will stay with us as helper and friend. Bless you Carolynn, and Sambo xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yasa - yes - read it now and replied. Would need rosta of watchers to be successful. Have been talking with lab rescue people and sent post over to Norfolk contact, said labs have been found after quite long time and ok except for weight loss as long as water supply - encouraging.Might be a help if anyone who has time could contact their local rescue/kennels vets in case Sambo has been taken out of county, check websites for his photo in FOUND columns etc, anyone with 'new' dogs in their area. The more leaflets and posters out there the more chance of 'that right person' seeing one. I'll go our tomorrow evening if he's not home by then. http://www.loveyourlabrador.co.uk/contacts.htmlLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have not been online this weekend, but spoke with Carolynn Saturday am. I took a large poster to Newmarket Road park & Ride saturday and before I left it was getting a lot of interest, also had a4 poster in the back of my jeep all over the weekend at car boot sale and several people asked about Sambo. Will try to find someone with a cage/trap,might be the answer? Will update. I also spoke a a friend in police who reminded me that in these cases often councils/authorities/rescues etc do not share information so possibly Sambo could have crossed county border and not yet scanned.Worth trying vets etc in Essex/Norfolk/Suffolk/Herts/london,  just in case  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Morning all, well Independance Day is over, lets hope July 5th is Reunited Day.  Yesterday I had a really kind guy come over who got in the water (safely not near the various weirs) and walked down the areas I couldnt see from the bank for roughly half a mile to see if he could see anything - nothing. In addition I had a long stick which I 'poked' into the weirs and again nothing.  Hopefully this is brilliant news.  Off out again now to see if I can spot anything. Sadly no more sightings of lost dogs in the area. I am going to put a list up of all the areas the weir, then river, runs into and hoping that people in those areas will be on the look out just in case.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a relief for you. Great ideas coming out, thinks Nina's is worth trying, driving round the villages like a voting campaign!, also trail of sardines and tripe (yuk in this heat!) Bookmakers, pubs, playgroups, places dogwalkers go, Tesco! petrol stations, vets. YouTube, The Heath, The stud staff houses, Take-aways. You cant poster enough, small ones house to house, so everyone knows Sambo's face. Some people get paper deliverers to slip mini posters in the Sunday papers, might have to bribe them but good coverage. When we were looking for Sapphire 2 years back (still missing) there was a man who lives at the foot of the hill where the gallops are and he 'finds' dogs, he had a motley crew at the time, walks them in the pms near the car parking space on left of hill.Might be worth asking.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have made this suggestion many times on doglost but do not know if anyone has ever done it! Hire or buy a hand held loud speaker and stand in a busy place and let everyone know your dog is missing.  Its also a chance to hand out doglost posters as well.  I always hope that in someone doing this it might bring press or media attention to the situation.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I grew up in Kirtling so know the area well, is there anything I can do to help you look for sambo, more than happy to come out searching tonight where do you meet? Just so you know you stopped my husband and I and our dog the other night in cheveley to give us a leaflet.
I'm sure you have but just in case, have you spoken to the local game keeper who lives in upend yet?

I contacted Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club and they have sent the details to all their members - twice, some of them have already been out looking on their bikes,  I have also let all of Newmarket Joggers know as there is a 10k in Stetchworth on Sunday.  I am going to contact the Ramblers today as this was a great suggestion given to me last night.  I put a laminated poster on my rubbish bag this morning in the hope that the refuse collectors will take it with them on their rounds today. Keep passing on ideas they're all brilliant and I'm getting very lonely at home alone so need my boy back!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You are all doing such a fantastic job, sorry I didn't make last night (working till 8.30) One thought I had is that a lot of cyclists seem to whiz around those villages in the evening, if you could find out where they start from could get them involved as they cover a big area Any known local poachers? gamekeepers they will know all the hidden places in woods. Milkmen, postmen, etc. Have you tried the early morning sausage BBQ, might lure a hungry lab boy! The Newmarket journal article will have made a lot of people aware too! I'll pop up tomorrow am if he's not back by then. Fingers crossed!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you, now that we've leafleted well I'm now 'on the ground' and I have to say trespassing a lot getting into woods etc for a look around. I feel if he's gone to ground this is what I should do?  So hoping for some sightings that may give us an exact area. I have put posters in all the windows of my car so that people can flag me down or leave notes behind my wipers when I'm out, which has already been done. Hi everyone, well no sightings today however we've got more volunteers out there and I have given everyone OS maps and asked them to focus on areas with shelter/woods/water etc and look for regular paw prints into water.  I have had a woman call me to say she saw a dog either 3 or maybe 4 days ago running madly around a wheat field and looked to be alone, she has given me exact area and I will go around tomorrow and check if the farm attached has Labradors and ask if they have seen anything, will also check as above. I have also had a call from a couple who live about 2.5 miles from where there was a 'positive sighting' on Tuesday to say that their dogs went 'beserk' on Monday night about midnight, it was pitch black and they didn't see anything but this is very unusual for their dogs to react like this and they thought it may be of use, the house is isolated and quite used to having foxes/deer pass so this wouldn't set them off. A dog would. they are calling all local landowners home owners to see if they have seen/heard anything.  This is an area about 6 miles from where he went missing and all connected by footpaths/roads and only one mile from where the dog was spotted in the wheat field.  Will keep you posted. Good night xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Carolynn, came up last evening met up with Lucy and her lovely tracker dog, then I went towards Kirtling, I think along Bradley Rd, did some postering and refixed some that were falling off, spoke to a nice man who lives at the end of a long private road on the left, he was aware of Sambo and has been spreading the word, then on to Kirtling village hall and left poster with the dog training group, who were all aware, back home via Dalham route, postered until near Dalham area. If he is roaming around, there is plenty of shelter in woody areas and must be streams so should be able to sustain himself until we can find him. May be able to do an hour or so tonight if leave work early.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Morning all, have been out since 5am, no news I'm afraid. However the Newmarket Journal have put in a fantastic article complete with picture and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.  I have been told to see if I can perhaps get a Bloodhound out to search as we have a local drag hunt in Cambridge so looking into it. Someone also suggested asking the local Scout group to come out and have a look.  I am praying and hoping that it was him that was spotted in Cowlinge and he's now just 'gone to ground'. Will keep you posted of any updates as the day unfolds. Carolynn xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all. I have just returned however no sightings tonight unfortunately. I walked the route that Sambo and I walked on Monday again just in case he returns to the area and picks up his scent. Friends were out in Kirtling, Upend, Cowlinge looking.  I also put posters up in the villages of Wooditton  and Stetchworth as this area is only 1.5 miles from Kirtling. Newmarket Journal is out tomorrow so fingers crossed they have managed to squeeze this in and that it generates a response.  Will be off out tomorrow morning again looking, I have had requests from members of the public to join in tomorrow night, the kindness and support of everyone has overwhelmed me. If anyone wants to join in at any time we start a 6pm.  The weir seemed lower at lunchtime today however it was very fast flowing again by 6pm.  Will keep you posted, THANK YOU KIND PEOPLE. Owner doing all the right things - well done, think laterally, might he be interested in a bitch in season walking round that area?, also would be looking for water and food, labs love their food! Thanks Poplar Farm Kennels. Not good news then. Have not long received the following update :- Morning Hazel,   No sightings as yet, we're all out in force though.  I have had one lady caller who said a black labrador was 'running riot' in Kirtling village last night as a delivery man to her house had to 'shoo' him away, this is only 3 miles from the Cowling/Wickhambrook area and going back in the direction of our original walk, She did say that there are a lot of black labs in the village and I saw one this morning that was wandering about near a farm but was unfortunately not Sambo.  Thank you for the updated poster, very helpful I will get printing.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Email from owner :- He was sighted in the Cowlinge/Wickhambrook area by 2 separate witnesses, both credible and locals. They thought he was a farm dog and didn't take much heed as they are often seen wandering, one witness did comment that he look disorientated but again didn't approach as he didn't know there was  a dog missing and its been very hot here today.  The area is not exact where he was sighted and quite vast, the problem being its only 2 miles from the busy A1307, which is a worry. This also means that if he is picked up he could be taken further afield to Bury St Edmunds or Haverhill.  The area is near to Stradishall Prison and a transport cafe/garage, which I have leafleted. I am going out at 4.30am to start the search again, will keep you posted. Once again thanks for all your help.   This is really good news if its him, but what we dont want now, is him being chased towards that road. Have given further advice.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok - just heard from Sambo's owner, and we do have quite a positive lead with two sightings of a black lab loose about 4 miles away. This would be just brilliant if its Sambo. He is posted on our forum this morning and one of our volunteers who lives local planned to do a search with her trained Pointers this afternoon. No further news but if Sambo is near the river they will find him if anyone can.  Good plan to shut of the water flow since he may just not be able to climb out and could be hung up on a branch.  Fingers crossed for good news later.      . No news this morning. We need the water authority to turn the fast running water down or off for a short while to search, but not being helpful. Where Sambo may have gone in, the water runs through several weirs from that point, and it is very deep. Sambo is a fit, strong dog, so praying he has somehow got out. Troops are being mobilised, in the area, so lets hope for a positive outcome here.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Email received :-  Thank you so much for your prompt reply, please find more details below:   I was out walking with my dog tonight along Kirtling Weir which is on a bridlepath/footpath between the villages of Kirtling and Great Bradley (near Newmarket) when he disappeared, believed to have fallen in the fast flowing water after our walk. The Fire Brigade were called and we searched for over 2 hours along the weir bank (it is a weir with varying water flow managed by the water board, at present the water is very fast flowing) I searched along with friends and local members of the community but with no luck. The Fire Brigade were terrific and tried all they could possibly do.  I live in Saxon Street (a village 4 miles from the area), He knows this area well and has walked around here many times, he has never run away before and was relatively tired after the walk due to the heat.  He likes water but is always very careful and avoids deep rivers and is more of a paddler sticking to the waters edge.  Lost: Kirtling Weir, near wooded area and near weir number 17 at 6.50pm, area searched until 10pm from Kirtling down to Great Bradley and Thurlow with no reported sightings. A reward will be offered.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This sounds awful. I am so sorry to hear that Sambo may have fallen into the water. This has come on just before midnight, so have emailed owner for more information. If you are reading this owner, perhaps you would leave a comment by clicking on the blue cross, above where this comment appears. I will speak with you tomorrow, but I do hope Sambo will be found safe. There is a poster available for you now. If you click on DOG POSTER 1, above the dog detail boxes, left hand side, the poster will open up. Do get hundreds up in the area, and hand out to dog walkers. Hopefully he will have got out safely, and will be seen. Good LuckLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
