Pepperoni has been to the vets and been given a clean bill of health. His heart and lungs are fine, he's back with his family and doing really well. I will upload a reunited picture as soon as I am able. Thank you so much for all the kind messages of support and the invaluable advice.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What an amazing story. His mum was so clever to show her owner how to get to him. It's so good to hear a happy ending. So pleased he's home safe and soundLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had a (very) long chat with Pepper's owner last night. It seems he got himself trapped in an old, uninhabited badger sett. His Mum, Chubby, I think she is called, had tried on several occasions to lead the owner to her  trapped son, but the route she was able to take was swampy, and extremely overgrown with dense brambles, etc., so the owner couldn't follow. Eventually, Chubby found a long way round, suitable for humans, and she led the owner to the sett where they could hear Pepperoni's whimpers. The earth in the sett had collapsed on the dog, virtually flattening him with his front paws up by his nose. It took the owner 6 hours to dig him out with a soup ladle, as it was such a delicate and tricky situation. A small roasting tin was used to create an air pocket to prevent him from suffocating as they dug. Eventually they were able to pull him out at gone 11.p.pm. To start with he couldn't stand up and walk, just kept falling over, but with time and TLC he is back on his feet, but very stiff. He is booked in at the vets for a 'once over' tomorrow, to see if there will be any lasting damage. He is one lucky little dog. The owner is hoping to upload a reunited pic at some stage, and maybe give us further news when she has been to the vet.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi,
Have e-mailed poster and details around, asking to cross post and put posters up because campers travel around.
The caravan park is near Trethevy near the cliff. At least that is what it looks like on Google earth. seems to be plots and a large building which is probably the centre. They could be static vans.

The dogs go into the fields to play, etc., not on set walks. She has been round all her neighbours, several times, in case Pepperoni has wandered onto their land. Owner not aware of any campsites in the locality. However she did once have a dog picked up by 'well meaning' visitors. The owner is very well known locally, other locals recognised the dog as hers, it was also microchipped, and she was able to get the dog back.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi,
Noticed on Google Earth a camp site not far off, has this been checked out?
Are these dogs just let to run around the fields or are there regular walk routes the owner takes them on,
this little dog may have followed a walk route.

Pepperoni is a local dog - he was registered by the owner's sister who lives upcountry. He is described as a very friendly, trusting, and sweet natured dog, who lives with his mum and his sister. He usually looks to these two older dogs for a lead, and hasn't been known to go off on his own. He isn't a typical 'rough, tough', independent Jack Russell by any means. However he does like to investigate peoples' cars, and may have been picked up by visitors. Home is a farmhouse surrounded by fields, which is where the dogs usually go when let out for wees, etc. They are one and a half miles from the footpath that leads to the cliffs, and as far as the owner is aware, there are no shafts or quarries nearby. All the dogs were let out into the fields on Saturday morning. Mum and sister came back, Pepperoni didn't.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
