Thanks Hazel for emailing the lovely events of her capture to work and posting the updates on here for everyone over the past few months.  Michael you have been a star doing all you have done to help Jack with Sue.  Wishing you all a very happy future together you can all enjoy Christmas and New Year now.  Hugs and kisses to Sue.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a fantasic report, I felt like I was there with you Michael. I hope Sue is never tested again and stays close to home in safety, but no-one can take away the huge part you played in all this, with such dogged determination you literally willed that girl to come back. Just in time too before the frosty nights! She is a beautiful girl and to see that photo of her and Jack is heartwarming to say the least. Thank you for updating me throughout and I would like to add that I met some lovely people when out postering in your area.Perhaps you should write a book!........................ PS - Would agree with Yasa that most dogs in similar cases would need a lot more watching before trusting off the lead soon after such an incident!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

In a further email he says After reading all the wishes I deceided the only way to just about end Sue's story was to tell it as Jack and I lived it. Would you be able to get the whole script on? I do hope so. However, you may edit the bit where I have now let Sue off a lead in case others try this example too early. I judged the time was right as I have studied Sue long and hard these past couple of days and have seen a massive turn around in her attitude. I judge that this will put her terrible journey behind her forever. She has not once even looked up a path in the forest today and even in the dark last night just went for her wee and poo and returned to me immediately. She follows me everywhere. I have grown to love her dearly and will be very sorry to see her leave on wednesday but she is Jack's dog, a reminder of his son Richard. Love to you and Hillary. Thank you so much Michael for taking the trouble to write all that. As you can see its given me real grief pasteing it onto here, but I'm sure it will help others in the future. The only thing we would both like to remind people reading this, is that Sue is a highly inteligent collie who has been trained to work - and on no account in normal circumstances should a dog be let off lead so soon after capture, and I'm sure Michael took his heart in his mouth when he did so. Continued Believing Sue to be wild now, it was our intention to lift the trap onto a trailer, cover it well and transport Sue to an area where we could safely remove her from the cage. That was not necessary, it soon became clear that Sue wanted to come home. We simply slipped a hand under the lift up door and fixed a rope lead round her neck and out she came. No fuss, no bother but quite nervous with all the sudden noise and attention. The rest of the story is on Sue's web page with Doglost UK. Without the support of their co-ordinators, specially Hazel and Hillary we surely would not have caught Sue. Finally, believe it or not, today is Monday the 30th November and Sue is no longer on a lead. She has shown to me that she is well and truly home. I have her here with me and she has enjoyed today with Jack. Further walks in the forest with my dogs - all three off a lead showed me she is almost ready to return to Jack. Incredible! I know I took a risk, but Sue has to be back with Jack on Wednesday and I would rather Sue ran away from me and not from Jack. I am now very sure that Sue was stolen from Didlington for a possible reward. I know who took her, the pieces of the puzzle have been placed together. Hence my judgement that Sue will not run again, if ever she did. I will miss her dearly but will have the privelege to visit her and bring her home whenever I like, shared would be a rather nice word. Regards to you all and very many thanks for all the messages I have read and received. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued I shouted out triumphantly to Jack who did not quite believe what I had just said. I accelarated towards the trap and Sue gradually grew larger than life as we approached. I stopped next to the cage and jumped out to see if she was hurt in any way and she replied with a deep growl. I stopped and then Jack emerged from the other side of the car and as I said in my first report - "in the time it takes your heart to beat once, that is how long it took Sue to recognise Jack!" We had Sue's Mother, Fly with us as well as Lucy and Meg and my two dogs. I let Sue's family out first and she was bowled over by them, lying on her back and whining, clearly overjoyed at seeing them. The tears both Jack and I shed will remain with me forever. My dogs were not that well received although she was pleased to be with other doggy company. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued After a long discussion we decided to leave it as it was, it was the best we could do. The final thing to do now was to smear the smelliest meat with loads of blood Jack had kept for this purpose over every piece of the floor, the sides and top of the trap as well as the surrounding grass area. We then laid the usual trail along the fence towards the "hole" and then left at 4pm. I decided to come back to the area at 11pm that night in case Sue was trapped and in distress. Nothing at all that night and I was concerned as the field was full of deer, certainly any noise of a springing door or a dog scratching around would have cleared the field of deer. I left and decided not to return that night. Friday morning at 6pm I collected Jack and we eagerly set off to see if our method had worked. I did not want to shortcut the adventure for Jack as he deserved more than me to see if his efforts were successful, remember Jack is 91 years old. We drove slowly around the corner and stopped where it would have been impossible for Sue to see us first (in case she had just arrived for her meal - if at all it was her). My heart leapt, there in the trap was Sue, WE HAD HER.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued Setting the trap was harder than I thought. The only place to set the trap and monitor it (if at all possible) was on the edge of the field. With a nice juicy raw chunk of beef I squigled on my back into the trap to fix the noose. This must have been comical as Jack was shouting instructions and I was trying to keep the meat off my face. We managed to secure it and then discovered the noose end where it held the meat was too long, if Sue took it gently she could have reversed out the trap and the door would certainly have caught her back and she would have been off faster than the day she spotted me. Jack came up with the idea of using a cable tie towards the bottom of the trap gently holding the wire noose at the furthest end of the cage but still leaving the meat just brushing the floor of the cage. We then transported bucket loads of mole earth to form a nice hard compacted floor the entire length and width of the floor space and outside so nothing could spook her on entry. Satisfied the door could not snag up on the built up floor we surveyed our work. Looked good, but we both thought the area was too open.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued - Monday 23rd saw me not feeling poorly so delayed my visit to the feeding station until the next day where i discovered every scrap of food eaten, a huge mountain of it. Jack and I were again not too sure if it was Sue as the Porters had a pheasant shoot on this same field on Saturday 21st, did Sue feed or was it the beater's dogs again! So on Tuesday 24th we fed the spot this time with the only meat we had - some smelly un cooked beef Jack had kept out for future feeding. This meat was ripe! We fed and laid a small trail of meat towards the river where we had discovered a hole in the rabbit fence that surrounded the sanctuary field. Wednesday 25th we returned and the food was gone. This time we were certain of 1 of 2 things, it was either Sue or a large dog fox. The paw prints left in the smoothed over sand showed us it was more than likely a dog. So Jack and I decided to set the trap we had prepared on Thursday the 26th November at 12pm, when most animals are resting. Thursday saw us brimming with eagerness as the food had once again been taken, not a scrap left, even the last horribly burnt sausage was gone from our first barbeque. The habit was formed, something was returning regularly to feed now. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Michaels long awaited report ! - Grab a cup of coffee LOL Hello Hazel. As you know the last confirmed sighting we had of Sue was in Brandon on the 11th October opposite the Ram Pub. I was working that day and asked my gamekeeper friend Richard to investigate this sighting. He and his daughter Dawn searched continuously to no avail. Sue then disapeared as was her usual trait. Sightings thereafter took us to Methwold, Swaffham and then to Downham Market area. All proved false and the trail went ice cold. Then, on Tuesday 10th November I had a call from a couple in Hockwold who had a friend that was fishing on the Little Ouse River directly behind the bird sanctuary between Weeting and Hockwold. Shane had seen her three times this day chasing after rabbits. Jack and I new this area well and imediately contacted Hazel with a view to setting up a feeding station here somewhere. Our problem was finding the right spot and settled for a patch of mole hills half way up the field from the river. A nice and quiet area shielded on one side by the very large sanctuary and the other side by shrubs and a watercouse, marshy area of long grass. In front was the side facing a thick woodland, very long grass - this was where Sue was holed up. We were now certain Sue had been flushed from the Hockwold/Wangford area to this more secluded spot. Jack and I could not get permission to enter the land to the front, farmer obviously not a dog lover, but Mr and Mrs Porter were quite the oposite and handed us the key to the gate and the freedom of their land to catch Sue. So Wednesday we had our first barbeque. I thought it was not the right day as the wind was against us blowing away from the decided area. Nevertheless we cooked, Jack ate (or I think he did) and I nibled - food was awful, I am a bad cook!). Next day (Thursday) we could not come to this spot as there was a pheasant shoot right on this field. Blast! So I waited to Friday evening to approach it again. I expected the food to be eaten as the beater's dogs would surely have gorged themselves. At 3pm I approached the field and upon entering the field I saw a lot of brown grass, thinking I had set the field alight with the buried embers from the fire I accelerated onto the field cursing my lack of safety when a sudden movement took my eye. There no more than 200 yards away was Sue! Once again she had caught me by surprise, she looked up and bolted away. I left the field, rushed to Tesco and bought every cooked chicken, sausage and rib I could find and returned to find all the previous food gone, so re-fed the same spot. Three more barbeques and now with a mountain of food now there, Sue had disapeared again. Jack was now sure Sue was here as I had finally seen her. Day after day we checked the field and spent all our waking moments hiding up a track just watching. Thursday 19th November and it was off to work for me to the Sunday. I was not too disturbed as we had heard nothing of Sue nor seen anything either. But I knew the landowner who would not allow us entry to his land had a pheasant shoot on the 19th so knew Sue would be flushed out, but in which direction? Friday night I got a call Sue was outside the Ram Pub area at midnight on this Thursday 19th. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

FROM MICHAEL :- Hello Hazel. Sue had a very comfortable and spoilt night last night - on my bed! She shows signs of aprehension at the slightest noise but is slowly gaining confidence with evry hour passing. A swipe from my one cat has kept her at bay from them and I no longer feel she will attack one although I am very careful and warch all the time. I did a little test this morning and let Sue go out with my Collie "Thomas" into the enclosed garden without a lead and without me with her. She was very interested in everything out there but came back in immediately I called her name. I know it was a chance I took, but I wanted to be sure that if she slipoped past Jack he would have a good chance of getting her back by voice. Sue knows her name AND loves her "pink" tummy tickled. This is a very inteligent dog and has "remembered" a lot in just one day and night. The "wishes" just keep pouring in and I would like to thank each and every one of your members and Doglost UK advisors for their thoughts and thanks. The main report will be done later today - after Sue has done her few visits I have planned for her to the landowners who have been so instrumental in this successful outcome. Then it is back to Jack for him to enjoy some time with her as I was so privileged to do last night. Regards to you all. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Michael is so tired - and will do a report tomorrow, but I will tell you he did it all himself, and trapped her last night, at the place she was seen at last, but I will leave him to relate that tomorrow. I have some lovely photos to put on in a mo, of Jack and Sue when they first got home this morning, and one of Michael and Sue tonight. Sue is staying with Michael tonight and will go home with jack tomorrow. Here is what he has had to say so far : - Hello Hazel.  Sue is with me right now. Had a vet check, all okay. Weight is 17.5kg - the normal weight is 14-20kg. A few ticks and fleas on her and she is very wary of any noises no matter how small. I was listening to the telly tonight and a fox barked out a couple of times and that really frightened her awful. As if she encountered them in the night in the wild. Cats seem to be food for her and we are constantly telling her no as she shows more than a casual interest in my 2. We have given her quite a few meals now and she has settled down very well. Loads of tears from the people who helped us and many, many congratulations. I had quite a congregation outside my house 9am this morning, news spread fast. I will never forget the moment I saw her through the binoculars in the cage and when Jack set eyes on her for the very first time. He kept crying out Sue, Sue, Sue. As long as it takes your heart to beat once, that is how long it took Sue to recognise Jack. Incredible! and an incredible dog. Her first nights lost must have been an awful, awful time as I can see now how she has lived on her wits and her courage. I will do a brief report for you asap with a description of the capture. I guess I was very lucky. I will chat to you tomorrow. Regards. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I spoke to Michael on Monday. He and Jack are working SO hard to try and get Sue back. They are going to keep on and maybe add some different strategies too. The feeling is that maybe someone has taken her in now with there being no sightings. One thing is for sure-they are not giving up!

Hi Michael - sorry to hear no news. Someone suggested the other day, and think it may have been fly, to put up some huge posters or notices, however you want to do them to capture a larger audience. Plenty of people about now coming up to Christmas. get guy Fawks over and they will all be Christmas shopping. I think its an excellent idea, as you could target thousands in one go, rather than all that running around thats so very tiresome. This approach has been used many times before, with great success, and I think I dis suggest near the beginning of this nightmare to put some up on the roads. maybe have a think about that - its got to be easier than what you are doing. Update from Michael today I am a bit down today. I had a call this morning of a Border Collie found in Spalde, very close to the last "possible" sighting of Sue in Swafham. Upon investigation this turned out to be a Tri-coloured Collie, Balck-Tan-White with a collar, no chips or identity tag on the collar and sadly is not Sue. Jollies in Dereham had this "found" poster up and this has given me another train of thought - to contact every Jollies Branch in East Anglia to see if we can reach a larger audience and further afield. I am beginning to believe that Sue has been taken in by someone as today is three weeks since she has been seen (in Brandon). The Brandon sighting revieled a bit more news yesterday where a friend said his son who lives in Riverside Way (where she was last seen) saw a Border Collie with another dog in his back yard. He did not know until he saw the poster that this could well have been Sue. He is sure about this sighting and said if he had known he would have closed his gate. NOW Sue running with another dog? Is that possible? If it is then I must assume she has been taken in by someone locally. Thank you to Fly for her work this week handing out posters and speaking to people. This must surely get the message over that we are not going to give up. Tomorrow we start afresh with new posters, this time asking people if they have ever seen Sue in the past or if anyone has spotted her with another person. So it looks like back to the start for us and Sue. Regards to you all. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I drove around Brandon, Methwold, Methwold Hythe, Hockwold and all villages mentioned in sigthings right up to Didington yesterday afternoon. On route speaking to locals and farmers etc. Lots of sympathy, some already had flyers of Sue, some are putting out food in case she is around their area through the night. Stationed myself outside Tesco in Brandon and talked to local people and handed out posters and flyers. (also others missing in area - Goldie, Elgin & Rhona) Hope we get lucky.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spoke to Michael and his Wife yesterday, they are doing so much to get Sue back. This may sound crazy but I wondered about getting HUGE posters laminated and putting up in main villages in the area, say at village green or village sign or notice board, also in backs of cars/vehicles. There must have been masses of leaflet delivered already I know but being faced with an almost life size picture may just jog someone's memory. I also think scenting is a very effective, if possible to get some items of original owner and leave in places she has been sighted, and really strong smelling food, for a hungry dog might just lure her out. I dont know if this area has farmers markets but if so that might be a good place to put a LARGE poster. Also wondered about people who live on houseboats - if they see her on her early morning reccies? Can help on Thursday if required.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No more sightings I'm afraid, but Michael and Jack remain positive. I'm really pleased to hear this, as we know Sue is out there somewhere, and if she's not loose, then someone has taken her in. Email from Michael tonight :- I have just read the comments posted on Sue's page re Santon Downham. That area is well known to me as I frequent it often with my own dogs. I have some posters up in the park area and the surrounding houses and Post Office as well as the Forestry Offices but will go back there tomorrow and re-new the posters. Thanks for those thoughts. I have not leafleted the village itself but will do so tomorrow. There are not many houses there so it will not take long. AND yes, it is not far from the sighting in Brandon two weeks ago yesterday. "Muns and Fly" could well be right. Regards to you all. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Strangley I was thinking of Santon Downham too, a friend of mine took a little almost ferral terrier who had been living in the wood there for about 6 months and finding food and shelter, apart from worms he was ok and after  fostering is doing ok, but it does mean a dog can survive there. I think there is a caravan park near the woods? If I am out that way this weekend I will take a look. Good Luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thats a very good suggestion re- Santo Downham muns, as there is also a river running all along that way, and she does seem to follow lines. If no posters have been circulated that area, she could well have been taken in there by someone also by now. I have also suggested local news rags again, and freebie papers in case someone in a very remote house, or cottage has given her sanctuary, and still not seen a poster. Such hard work for Michael and Jack, I realise, but its always the same advice, poster poster and more poster, and more publicity, until we get news again. Also keep checking the rescues, pounds, vets, in case handed in lately, and DO keep checking I'm afraid, with the rail, road and water authorities. But still very positive here. We know dogs DO manage to find food and shelter, and sometimes are not given enough credit for their inteligence. We know Sue has proved herself to be highly clever. She is a survivor, barring mishaps. Praying for news by the weekend. x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If it were me I would take the Watton sighting with a pinch of salt-unless she hitched a lift.If she was seen in Brandon which I believe is fairly certain and kept heading in the same direction I would be more inclined to look at Santon Downham where there is a visitors centre. Have Michael and Jck left any leaflets there? May be an idea. Just trying to think of anything to help as I am on the other side of the county. I hope there is a definite sighting agai very soon. It is so frustrating when things go quiet.

I have heard from Michael tonight, and he apologises for the lack of reports this week. He has been trying to catch up on some work, but still take Jack out every day, searching for Sue. Sadly it would now seem that the sighting of Sue at Methwold was not Sue, but a local dog known to wander. However this morning a call came through to say that a dog similar to Sue had been seen near the Waitrose Petrol Station in Watton. So tomorrow Michael intends postering near the area of sighting. Michael and Jack have also discovered some four piggeries between Feltwell/Methwold and Weeting, which are easily accesibleby via the interlinking forest tracks where Sue was seen on three previous occasions. They have always had the feeling that she was hanging around near the pigs, and using their food. Just hopeing and praying now, for further sightings, because to me, if this latest sighting was indeed Sue, and unless my calculations are totaly wrong, she is now about 15 miles away from where she was originally sighted near Hockwold. This last report seems very positive to me. I'm thinking that if Sue has been seen in the area of the pub and the sheep field at that time on a very cold morning, that she may hole up somewhere quite near to there. It would not be the first time we have found a dog to be sleeping with the sheep, so maybe worth checking that out. Also, would the pub be willing to leave food out on a regular basis if you asked them? If they do pub grub, Sue may have just got the scents of the leftovers, and will be back. Do also check out, any refuse bins to see if they have been raided. Well done for getting an article into the Methwold Times. When that comes out, please let me know and I will bump Sue back to the top. So pleased that Jack is now feeling so much more positive. I hope he is right, and she will be home tomorrow. Very well done Michael. I feel we are close now. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello Hazel. Another day gone by and no further news on Sue's escapades. However, the sighting of Sue in Brookeville/Methwold on Wednesday is now confirmed. Another Lady has just called me to say this Border Collie was in a sheep field right outside the old Swan Pub between Brookeville and Methwold AT 8am. It appears Sue came out of the field to attempt to cross the road, but nervously went back into the field. Jack and I have extensively covered the Northwold, Brookeville, Methwold and Methwold Hythe area today. There is still a lot of ground to cover but we have made as many people aware as possible. Post Office delivery men and milkmen are all on the lookout for Sue. I did discover a very interesting site today and will enlarge on this at a later reporting I will make as I need this area to be kept as quiet as possible for a while but does tie in with the sightings of last Wednesday by the 2 fishermen and another Lady who followed her up a forest track for a while. Jack's last parting words to me tonight were: "I'll see you tomorrow WITH SUE"! Regards to you all. MichaelLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Michaels update for today. Not much more news to report than yesterday. Jack was not able to be with me today so I took time out to get new leaflets and posters printed. I made contact with a lot of people again and also received a few calls as a direct result of the two thousand leaflets/posters now out there. I popped into the local Spar Shop in Brandon and was informed that Sue was seen on Sunday by another person whom I have now contacted. His timed report proves Sue WAS in Brandon from 12.30pm to around 2.30pm. NOW Sue being in Methwold is a mystery! Although only one of the two sightings has described her acurately (the other sighting has now seen a picture of her and is not sure at all if it was her or not as it was only a fleeting glance). Nevertheless, I am treating this with respect because of my last mistake when I did not take a sighting seriously in Hockwold a while back. If Sue was in Methwold we will then do as suggested by Hazel and search the fields surrounding Methwold/Northwold and certainly leaflet Northwold, try to move her on towards Didlington with a scent trail via Jack and Sue's mother Fly and her two "doggy" companions Lucy and Meg. She is excitingly close to home now, be it all by misfortune if she WAS chased here! But remember, we are still not sure if this latest chapter was really Sue! Regards to you all. BUMPED ! More sightings of Sue !  I have looked these latest ones up on the map and am now on the edge of my seat. Miachael is correct in thinking that Sue looks to be definitely on her way home !! I have to say, that Michael and Jack have done an incredible publicity job from day one, and it is really paying off with so many people aware. If they havnt got a poster themselves most have seen posters and know what she looks like. Amazing ! report from Michael :- Hello Hazel. As expected, Sue has emerged from her hide-away whilst I was at work on Sunday 11th October IN Brandon, between the Little Ouse River and the Railway Station area. Wow! She has never been near houses before, at least that we know of,  and I suspect the colder days is keeping her on the move for more "fat" building foods - or is it possible she on the hunt for "Home". Jack and I have travelled extensively in the last two days and have leafleted the Brandon area where she was seen on Sunday, AND Sue will feature in the Brandon Life Magazine (thanks to the Edititor, Karen and a friend of mine, Dawn next week. Today, Thursday 15th Jack and I had another shock in store for us. Sue had been spotted in Brookville/Methwold some 10 miles West of Brandon! This is an unconfirmed sighting as both people who telephoned me have not as yet seen her photograph. But from the description given by the second person, then I believe it might be Sue, (black back and white front and legs). Whatever! The hunt for Sue will now be switched to this new area of Methwold, in fact the search commenced at 4pm today, Jack and I immediately began door to door calls until fading light beat us. AND, as I see it now on Google Earth, Sue has never been nearer home than she is right now. My gamekeeper friend in Brandon had already told me his thoughts were that Sue was roaming such a large area in her quest to find "Home". Regards to you all. Michael Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

BUMPED due to sighting! Sighting today in Brandon High Street, where Sue held the traffic up for a while. A lady called her by name and she stopped and went to approach her, but then thought better of it and ran off. The lady said she is looking very thin. This now means she has moved slightly off her triangle, and out of the countryside. maybe she is now foraging around the houses for food, so will give us a much better cahnce of cornering her or trapping her. She may be on the verge of getting ready to give herself up - which has got to be good news. Well done Michael that the lady knew who she was, so the posters are working. I have advised to flyer all the houses now, and educated people that they must not chase her, but let anybody feed her who can and we hope to be able to trap her in a garden. Dog warden will be informed of the sighting tomorrow, and thank you to the game keeper for coming straight out and trying to help, but Sue had run off by then. Good Luck for tomorrow Michael. Hopefully she will be home soon now.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

From Michael I am still trying to establish if the sighting of Sue yesterday morning is genuine one. Two fishermen from a nearby lake saw her crossing the Hockwold/Weeting road into the forest from the Little Ouse River area. This sounds possible as right across the road on the nearby fields to the river they have been harvesting onions. It could be that Sue uses this particular field regularly, there is a lot of maize cover for pheasants which could provide the ideal "hide hole" for her or an ideal area where she can lie low without disturbance from anyone at all. On Tuesday 29th September when we nearly caught Sue, it was along side this particular field where Jack and I sat in wait after her earlier escapades - this was where my mobile phone went flat and we had to leave premarturely. I have sent a letter to the "now departed" fishermen asking them to contact me urgently so as to establish if the sighting was indeed Sue and to confirm a time. Jack and I have put out "new" posters and leaflets today asking people not to chase Sue but to report sightings and if possible, just sit and watch her. Regards to you all. Great news- another sighting ! Well done Michael. Hello Hazel. I did not submit a report last night as Sue has not been seen for days now. EXCEPT this morning I got a call from a local landowner in Hockwold that a holiday maker had seen Sue yesterday midway between Hockwold and Weeting. I am watching the postings on Sue closely. (Unfortunately wrong side of County to be any practical help) It must be so frustrating not to have had any sightings BUT from my limited experience this does happen sometimes (certainly with Bubbles there would be spells of 3 days or so when the sightings stopped) Like Hazel, I so hope she is seen again very soon.

I feel so sorry for jack and Michael. No sightings reported again today. It seems she has either changed or extended her stomping ground due to extra activity in the area. Probably a good idea to get posters up further away, and in places not yet covered. From Michael :- No reported sightings of Sue again today, it has been raining quite a lot so presume she has holed up somewhere. No food was eaten at the feeding station we set up nor any taken in the two disused barns. Today I spent the entire time renewing contacts and talking to a couple of new contacts as well as communicating with the different bodies ie. Dog Warden, Councils etc. The last thing I want is for people to relax and not report a sighting, but I have asked "everyone" not to approach Sue if seen and to call me instead. I wish I had better news to report, so we will wait to see what tomorrow brings! Regards to you all. Michael  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No sign of Sue again today, she has disappeared off the radar. I went to the small holding where we had thought Sue was feeding, but she had not gone back there last night so I decided against leaving and setting the trapping cage. The main reason for this is that the person who owns the holding will not be there for a day or 2 but will still feed near his kennel as he has done for me the past week or so. BUT I did talk to a neighbouring gamekeeper today and he says the landowner saw a Border Collie at the spot where she was first seen so long ago AND this sighting was last Wednesday, the day after we nearly caught her alongside the Little Ouze River. Upon closer questioning the gamekeeper thought the landowner might well have been confused about the day and it could have been Tuesday he saw her, the day when she disappeared. To me this information is vital and I am eagerly awaiting a call from him just to establish a time he saw her (Tuesday or Wednesday, it does not matter to me). This means we were correct in assuming Sue was trying to re-cross the river and has done so and is now on the side we are watching so closely. Lets hope tomorrow brings something a bit more positive. Regards to you all. Michael      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Update for tonight from Michael. No sightings of Sue today and the area I "sanded" over yesterday by the new pig station had not been disturbed. I know something is using this gap between two fields as a crossing from one to the .other. My other two feeding places were not disturbed either, but on a much brighter note the dog biscuits we have been leaving out at another smallholding area, very close to where Sue was first seen many weeks ago, had been eaten last night. On this occasion the guard dog in the kennel did not make a peep! Could it be that Sue has struck up a friendship? I did my usual rounds today to ensure the interest in Sue is maintained. By this I mean the "key" spotting areas. Areas where Sue can be seen and NOT disturbed. I have kept away from the farmers who tend to follow after her at a sighting, trying to catch her or entice her to their own dogs. Tomorrow we are moving in the "trapping" cage close to the spot where the biscuits were taken last night and the advice given will be followed strictly as we all know that there will only be one chance in this method of capture. Until tomorrow night, regards to you all. Michael.    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Michaels update for tonight. We have also had a lengthy chat. Hello Hazel. The search for Sue was much the same as yesterday. No sightings at all and no food eaten at any of the feeding stations we have put up. The conditions were not ideal today and this was reflected by the fact that there were hardly any owners walking there dogs because of the high winds. The windy conditions could also be a reason for Sue to lay low. I have investigated the new pig field and the surrounding area and will retrace my visiting areas tomorrow. Let us hope that Sue recovers her nerves and shows herself soon. Regards .Michael    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This was Michaels update for last night:- Hello Hazel. Another fruitless day. No sign of Sue at all. I was expecting Sue to feed at the small holding  last night but she did not show up. The gamekeeper on was out and about. Last Thursday night was the complete opposite, no gamekeepers out which meant Sue could move freely about.Jack and I visited many people today who are keeping a watch out for Sue, the staff on the Lakenheath Fen Nature Reserve are informing all visitors to keep a keen lookout for her, and on one stop I finally caught up with the Pig Farmer in Weeting where Sue was seen a few weeks back. He informed me of a new pig station he has set up some 2 weeks ago and very, very near to where Sue was seen last Thursday on the railway line by a worker. This new station offers Sue an unlimited amount of Pig Nuts/Pellets as the feed hoppers are permanently turned on, and it is extremely quiet there. This is a shorter report than normal and I would like to conclude it by saying I have the trapping cage to hand for immediate use once we can establish where crafty Sue is eating. Regards to you all.  Michael      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

No reported sightings yesterday at all. It may be Sue has gone under cover for a few days again, if she has spotted a few people taking interest in her. This is not uncommon in a dog that is not ready to come home. I think we have to make sure all the posters up say DONT CHASE - PLEASE JUST CALL OWNER as new people on the trail, may not be aware how nervous she is. Then we will have to be patient until she shows again. Will update further later.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello Hazel No confirmed sightings today. However all is not lost. Small holding owner was a bit more lively today than when I saw him after his sojourn with the night vision binoculars. He is sure Sue paid him a visit on Tuesday night. He was so whacked out he went to bed at 7pm and during the night Sue apparently went in for a meal. This time his dogs were barking a lot. He woke, couldn?t remember where the binoculars were, saw nothing, so went back to sleep. Wednesday morning he checked the feed bowl outside his dogs kennel and discovered the food had been eaten and some water taken. He also found some dog poo with pig nuts in it, and we know Sue has been seen around the pigs, so Sue had called! So now I will lift the food at the other feed stations tomorrow.   The gamekeeper is out tonight searching for foxes and he will look round the pig area.  Hopefully this will push her towards the small holding which I now believe she is treating as a secure area as no-one has troubled her here. I will continue to check fields and sit on a patch I know that overlooks the river (or a portion of it anyway). There is a lot of farm activity around here now but I do not believe this to be an obstacle for Sue as she was always with Jack or the late Richard when they were harvesting or drilling or checking the cattle etc. Today I travelled to Shippea Hill Railway Station in case Sue uses the railway line to travel further afield - which I very much doubt. That concludes the report tonight in the hunt for the incredible Sue! As usual, Sue's page gives me a deep, deep feeling...thank you all so much for your concern...regards...Michael      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok - sorry everyone, I know you have been waiting, but have really had to be somewhere else today. I dont usualy hear from Michael until very late of an evening, but this is the rest of what he said this morning before off and out again. Yes, the small holding owner is feeding Sue near the kennel. He saw her take a drink, and is our best shot now but he does have an iffy dog that will make an awful racket if I were to be on his property, so this section of the procedure, I am leaving to him.   If he has something positive for me today I will lift the other food places and use the one feeding station for her. I am sure by the time the guns are out she will move nearer there. The trap will be set on the very next sighting by him as time is very short now. We may even set up two traps, but the gamekeeper will do that, wherever we think is the best place. Thanks for your efforts in keeping your site updated, it is amazing. No calls thus far, so I am getting Jack and we will visit the small holding now. Regards Michael  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for the comments ladies, and I know you are right. I am of the same mind re the small holding and have already suggested as much, as Sue seems to be happy with that area, and the dogs are there, so she knows its safe. Also as you say, it would be away from the guns, plus the fact the owner of the land is totaly on board and would be there to watch the trap when Michael cant. Have also mentioned the lamb joint Fly - LOL. There is a trap already available by the way, one of the game keepers has offered to loan one. I'm surprised the bar b que hasnt been tried either, as it would be something Jack could sit and do without trudging around. I know Michael was stressed yesterday as Sue had been spooked a bit, by different events, that happened, plus I think poor Jack is probably getting a little impatient, and who would blame him, but that would be something he could do. I also said to leave some food behind once the bar b que was over as as sure as eggs are eggs, she will be back to find the left overs. And that then, I would think would be a good place to put the trap, especially if the barby could be done on a few days running so she gets used to the proceedure and knows there will be food there. Lets see how today pans out, and what Michael thinks .......  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm watching this spot avidly, hoping to see Sue in the Reunited! Might it be possible to get a large open humane trap with tasty food hanging up inside, it worked with Bubbles who was missing for 6 weeks, but roast lamb was her downfall! I love her dear face and hope she is safely home soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Why dont you concentrate on the small holding area and set a feeding station there and get her owner to scent. If you know she is around there and has been feeding. If the guns start tomorrow and she gets scared it may be the place she will go to. Perhaps put some of her bedding there too.  She looks such a sweety, I do so hope she is caught soon

Update for Wed 30th Sept   Hello Hazel, I am a bit laid back today as I realised that tomorrow the 1st October is the beginning of the Pheasant season. Sue hates guns so I am furiously thinking what the next step should be. But first, today brought no sightings. I never expected there to be any as Sue was put through the mill yesterday. The shift staff at the rail crossing are really taking an interest in Sue, and every few minutes they are scanning the track as their view is completely uninterrupted, and every person who has called into the Post Office are always asking of Sue and of how the search is going. That brings me to one of your well wishers, Susie, the leaflet Susie mentions, I gave it to a gentleman who was having a lunch break in Porter's field, how fantastic he passed in on to someone else who travels regularly in this sighting area. Well done to him. I now hope that Sue has moved back to the small holding and the dogs where we know she has been drinking and possibly feeding. I will see the owner tomorrow. Here is hoping and praying, and knowing Sue's habits quite well, it won't be long before we are off in pursuit once again. If not tomorrow, then Friday for sure! To all DogLost UK readers and well wishers, thank you for the words of encouragement. Regards..Michael    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Perhaps Sue's dad Michael could get together with Dan of Koko fame to write a book - these nightly bulletins are just like Dan's - making me sit on the edge of my seat and LOL. Your determination will pay off and I pray that tonight is the night.  Come on young lady, enough of the runaround now, time to go home.x.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've also been watching Sue's page and praying for her return. We are all keeping just about everything crossed 'this end'. Your dedication and tenacity is truly inspirational. You so, SO deserve to get her back. Sounds like she's having the time of her life (naughty girl!) but hope that you can outwit her very soon. It's time that Sue was back home in the warm with her caring family and friends. Can't wait to see her in the Blue area. Good Luck!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Still waiting with baited breath here. I am so pleased you are getting sightings that show she is one area and returning to specific places. This is so encouraging. Keep at it. I wonder if Sue would like to take breakfast in the driveway of this bungalow. I take my hat off to Sue’s owner, bless him. I do hope it is today that she is home!!!  Good luck and will be thinking of your all.

Continued from below :-  NOW I believe Sue's sighting of 7am might have been a direct result of this guy moving around his farm spotting for Sue until so late this morning...I have therefore asked him to sit in one spot and not to stay up too late if he is sleeping there...he will re-feed with fresh food and I will catch up with him tomorrow.. I dropped Jack back at Didlington and returned to sit until dark, nothing! But I suspect Sue will not emerge until she thinks it safe and I believe she will re - cross the river into this area she knows so well...That concludes another chapter in the bid to reunite Sue with Jack...at 91 years old I do not know where he gets his energy...not one complaint and not once checking the time,,,he would stay out all night if he could...   Regards and thanks for updating Sue's page...Michael    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued from below :--   Jack and I only had 1 stop more to go before we departed to sit at a site I new she had to come by, to wait...just at this stop, by the river, a man came screaming out of his house shouting for my attention. He had just seconds before seen Sue moving "fast" towards Weeting,   I took Sue's family back away from where Sue could have come out, and let them do a bit of scenting and came back to our position...But Sue did not show again. .........   Last night proved to be very quiet...poor guy at the small holding, had my night vision binoculars and had been so carried away with his search for Sue he only realised at 3.30am what time it was...he returned to his cabin, fell asleep in the armchair and missed his early morning call with a farm hand!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Your nightly update folks LOL                                                        Yet more sightings !   Please be patient and give me time to post this in stages. This is so exciting ! Hello Hazel...today we nearly got her...   but first I must tell you Sue's message page makes me very emotional every time I read it...back to today and it won't be short..............I got a call this morning 7am, I did not hear the phone ring, my wife did...I was out of it completely, after a rough shaking I tore out of bed in search of the phone - I knew it was a sighting........   Sue was seen on the drive way of a bungalow on the Hockwold side of the Little Ouze River. This call was a bit vague so I did not take it very seriously and just sat to think a few things through. Made a telephone call, and was sort of stirring myself to get ready to have a check on the previous days feeding places when the phone brought me back to real time - another sighting of Sue at 7.45am in exactly the same driveway as the 7am sighting...how stupid was I not to take the first "possible" sighting seriously enough to go to the area immediately..   .Sue was  trying to get across the river and  was waiting for a break in the traffic it seems to re-cross the river... I immediately telephoned for assistance, but we lost her, so decided to get Jack along with Sue?s dog family, and visit every house/farm bordering the bungalow in every direction...   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Continued from below : - Please start from Your long awaited update - AND MORE SIGHTINGS ! He is certain that his dogs never barked because they now know Sue...he has had food eaten in the past and even thinks Sue has been in a mobile home there he uses as a sleeping place from time to time...I will get an update tomorrow...in the meantime we had been watching and waiting patiently at the point Sue was seen Sunday.  After hearing this news, and when we thought it safe to approach 2 out buildings near to where the small holding is we went in search of her hold up place...these buildings are ideal for a sanctuary so we boarded up all holes and escape routes, fed both places and left in a hurry... No news today of Sue, Jack and I have moved around this area very quietly and very slowly so as not to disturb her...it is difficult to give a short report as I might leave out something.   I did go along the stretch where Sue was seen on Thursday along the railway line...this gave me a shock as I realised Sue is useing the railway to cross the river.  NOW I know you and your site visitors have said MAP A ROUTE properly on paper, this I did when I was at this point and it makes a perfect triangle about 2 miles across each side...the railway worker's sighting gave us the nudge to plot a possible course. Incidentally I also took advise and visited the signal box on Lakenheath crossing...the guard told me he too had seen Sue on Friday trying to cross the line. ..Sue ducked back when a train passed, the guard nearly gave an alert to all trains but decided against it, but is passing on my distress call to the other guards up and down the line near him for any sightings... I was crossing the line myself at one point, when a blast from a train brought me to my senses, I was not listening and the driver had seen me dawdling near the track...I was surprised at its silent approach and speed...so to any of you out there, beware of trains and always look, listen and cross quickly where you are allowed to cross...no doubt my presence was reported to railway police!   To be continued - ...thanks for your patience...Regards...Michael Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Your long awaited update - AND MORE SIGHTINGS ! This came in via email. I'm afraid it is only part of !! ..... LOL. Wow - so much progress has been made, its got to be only a matter of time now ... Enjoy .... Hi Hazel...I have just been onto Sue's page...WOW! I am quite choked up by the response of your subscribers...it is incredible how much advice and "wishes" that have been left. Thank you all so much... The weekend was quite busy for Sue. A railway worker saw Sue about 100 yards from the field that Jack and I went to on Thursday planning our feeding routine and was later seen ON the railway line, but when he approached her to within 20 yards she ran off towards the river...Jack was unable to get his friend to bring him back to feed on Thursday after I left him so he returned alone to do it. (Jack did not know then of this latest sighting on the Railway line)..   Sunday Sue was seen at 6pm running along the overflow river/dyke moving towards Wangford/Lakenheath. After discussion with the game keeper, the conclusion was the same as mine? Sue has a bolt hole in this area. So Monday very early I visited the area and came across a small holding, where the owner informed me he had seen Sue Thursday Night/Friday morning (25th Sept) at 2.30am whilst watching a fire he had set die out...sitting in his vehicle waiting, he saw a form appear in the night just ahead of him (he was in his truck at the time), he switched on the headlights and there was Sue...she paid him no more than a curious glance, so he cut the light and watched her move to his dog in a kennel and take a drink of water?. then Sue returned casually the way she had come.     This guy will now keep watch...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

More sightings today !!!  I am overwhelmed by the effort these lovely people are puting in, and I'm sure it wont be long before Sue is coming to the food station. Tomorrow only two people will quietly lay food and return later in the day to do the same again. There is  a trap on hand if it is needed, but I am hopeful that maybe we can do without.  We will see what the next day or so brings. Sue is looking well, and by no means thin, so it is assumed she is probably living off the pig and cattle feed that is around. Well done everyone. Top job being done here. Cant wait for the next instalment. !  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If you plot all sightings on a map, it will probably form a triangle. It will be within this area that she is moving around. I would advise just one feeding station though not three. Home her in to one area don't confuse her. Good luck and I hope she is home soon...

Sightings of Sue !! Owners are doing so very very well.   Extract from the amazing lengthy and humorous emailed update received tonight from Michael, friend of owner Jack. Hello Hazel...I am so sorry I have not been in touch...we have now leafleted Hockwold and Weeting in Norfolk/Suffolk...Sue is developing a pattern it seems. We have now had 5 confirmed sightings along each side of the river Little Ouze from Weeting to Hockwold. Seems like Sue is foraging around the river on both sides but more often on the Weeting to Hockwold side...I have now made contact, face to face with the 5 gamekeepers along both stretches of the river and all farms in the areas all the way to Feltwell. 1500 leaflets have been handed to every household (I think) in Weeting all along to Hockwold which includes every house in Hockwold. The upshot is there is a mighty lot of people aware she is missing and roaming the area...if she is still there we should find her (if she will let us)... I cannot resume my search until Monday as I have a busy working weekend starting from tomorrow but I have told Jack (the owner - 91 year old man from Didlington) to search these areas regularly and to find 3 places where it looks likely she might hold up at night and to leave food. Around these feeding places he will leave scent and scatter some bedding/hairs/dust collected from the farm and her sleeping/playing area along with some smelly stuff from her sister and mother...he will continue to check these feeding areas and re-feed if necessary and then if we can establish a regular feeding area we will get the local gamekeeper here to put out his large trapping cage and then we lure her hopefully into this cage via the same feeding and scenting methods...one thing is certain, none of the 5 gamekeepers will shoot her... Well Hazel that is my full report, can you put some snippets on the web site for me...I have been far to busy with my search to even look at the site...thanks for everything and thanks for your site...from now to Monday lunchtime I will only be on my mobile ...regards...Michael  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

might be an idea to get a poster to the local post office where the postmen pick up the letters to distribute - as a lot of the houses out there are far removed and a postie with a van must surely deliver to the houses off the main roads on the farms and smallholdings- may perhaps see her on his/her travels through the remoter areas.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When my BC, an ex working sheepdog, went missing for a day. I was terrified he would be shot as there were farms nearby with sheep.  When we spoke to the farmers, they all said that as he was a trained working dog he would probably NOT worry any livestock as he would not have received his commands.
All yours is looking for now is food and water. Hope you are succeful soon. Good luck.

There were three sightings at Hockwold last Wednesday 16th Sept along the river bank. People were chasing and trying to catch her. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. You will not catch her that way. IF SIGHTED PLEASE CALL OWNER IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT CHASE.   Sue is a working Collie, and originally went off after pheasant, but then got lost in the woods and these sightings are about ten miles away. She also works cattle, and there are cattle around that area, which is possibly why she has been seen there. Owner is desperately trying to get hold of the game keeper who rang with the sightings and a warning she may be shot if worries the animals. He wont answer calls, and although people in area know of him, they either don?t know where he is based, or are just not willing to give out his whereabouts. Consequently owner cannot find out exactly where, and how far apart the sightings were, to lay scent down. He is constantly around the area, and is going to follow the advice he has been given. Excellent job already been done with publicity, and press releases expected over next few days. Just need to get more sightings coming in now, in order to know where exactly to concentrate. Barns and outhouses will be searched as far as owner can get access to, and his other dogs are also being taken to the area, and will search off lead, as they are also working dogs, so hopefully Sue will pick up with them eventually.
