Although this is truly heartbreaking, we all know that one day our beloved friends pass over the bridge.
Clare, what you did was magnificent. You loved her, cherished her and cared for her. You made her happy and comfortable in her last weeks. No one could have done more.
What you have now is pain but more so you have the memories of that sweet little girl who loved you as you loved her.
She is safe, comfortable and happy playing at the bridge with all the other loved dogs.
Holly is safe now and Clareby god girl, you did her proud. Judy

Claire - I'm so sorry. I have only just caught up with this. I'm so sorry you have lost Holly, but you were THE best mum to her, and she knew that, and loved you for helping her in her time of need. Thank you for helping her, and for being there for her. I think all these many tributes say it all. Sending you love and healing thoughts. Run free with all our little ones at Rainbow Bridge, sweet Holly xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Claire, I am so, so sorry to read that Holly has passed away.  I am writing this, sitting at work, with tears in my eyes but although my heart feels heavy, there is also so much happiness because what you did for Holly was incredible and you made her last few months so happy and filled with love.  I don't think any of us will ever forget the story of Holly and that is all down to you.  Take comfort in knowing that you gave her love, comfort, companionship and fun in her final months.  You truly are a star and people like you restore my faith in human nature which can be really tested at times.  Well done. And Holly, beautiful princess, RIP sweetheart and have fun at the Rainbow Bridge with all the other cherished pets xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Claire I am so sorry for the loss of Holly.  I haven't just got tears in my eyes they are positively leaking!
Holly's story and your devotion to her has touched so many people and I think has given so many that little bit more faith and hope in the humanity of this world.
I honestly believe Holly found you, thank you for giving her care and happiness in her last few months and helping to cross the bridge in peace. Thinking of you and your family.
Run free lovely Holly. X

Just like many others I'm sure, I have been following Holly's story, even though I haven't posted on her page before now. I just want to say how much I admire you Claire for everything you have done for Holly. Life seems far too cruel at times, but Holly was so lucky to have found you, even though her time with you was far too short. I only wish there were a lot more people like you around. Take care xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Claire, I am so sorry to hear that dear Holly has passed away.  As people have said before me, you had done everything for her and her last months that she was with you, were undoubtably the safest and happiest that she ever had.  It's as though she had found you, as opposed to vise versa.  Thank you for taking the time to care and love her.  Remember that when your hurt fades, you will have wonderful memories of your time together. xx.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hope this does not make you to sad Claire but i just think it is so beautifull. Treasured Friend Holly I lost a treasured friend today, The little dog who used to lay her gentle head upon my knee and share her silent thoughts with me She'll come no longer to my call retrieve no more her favorite ball. A voice far greater than my own has called her to his golden throne. Although my eyes are filled and glazed I thank him for the happy days he let her spend down here with me and for her love and loyalty. When it is time for me to go and join her there, this much I know... I shall not fear the transient dark for she will greet me with her bark. Sukimax. xxxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Claire I am so very sorry to hearregards Holly you gave her all the love in the world and she clearly adored you for it...Thinking of you all XX RIP Holly X When Tomorrow Starts Without Me ?
When tomorrow starts without me and I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry, the way you did today,
Remembering how I'd lay my head, In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you.
And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name, and petted me with her hand.
She said my place was ready in Heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But, as I turned to heel away, a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I never thought, that I would have to die.
I had so much to live for, so many sits and downs to do,
It seemed almost impossible, that I was leaving you.
I thought about our lives together, I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had.
Remember how I'd nudge your hand, and poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase, the bad guy, I'd "bark and hold".
If I could relive yesterday, just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you, just so I could see you smile.
But then I fully realized, that this could never be;
For emptiness and memories, will take the place of me.
And when I thought of treats and toys, I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did, my dog-heart filled with sorrow.
But then I walked through Heaven's gate, and felt so much at home;
As God looked down and smiled at me, from His beautiful golden throne.
He said, "This is eternity, And now we welcome you,
Today your life on earth is past, But here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last;
For you see, each day?s the same day, there's no longing for the past.
Now you have been so faithful, so trusting, loyal and true;
Though there were times you did things, you knew you shouldn't do.
But good dogs are forgiven, and now at last you're free;
So won't you sit here by my side, and wait right here with me?"
So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart.
For every time you think of me, I'm right there, in your heart.

Claire, I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about Holly but how lucky you both were to have found one another. It was obviously just meant to be (fate, if you like) and, as others have said, she couldn't have been better cared for by you and your family. Your accounts of Holly sorting out her 'toy box' used to make me smile, as she was clearly content and happy right to the end. Thinking of you - bless your Holly and thank you for caring so much. Rest in peace dear Holly - sweet dreams beautiful girl...xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Claire, Of course we all new that Holly's death was coming soon, but even so it was a shock when I read of it here. I am convinced that it was no accident or coincidence that Holly found you to love and care for her in her final days. No one could have loved her so dearly or have done so much for her as you have done. I have followed Holly's blog every day and seen how she has been so happy with you. How wise you were in your decisions about what treatment she should have and what would have been too much. It may sound odd, but I would say that Holly had a happy life with you and she also had a happy death. She is now at peace and I pray now that you too will find peace. Holly has touched the lives of so many of us. She will be long remembered and so, too,will you for your love and care. God bless you, peace.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I know that Holly has repaid your love in her own way and she will always be with you engrained in your heart, as she is also in many of ours too. I don't suppose Holly's previous owners, or vets that have treated her, are reading this.......but just in case... a little bit of her medical history would help an awful lot with decisions about medication options for Holly.  Someone, somewhere must know something that can help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

hi claire...just don't know what to say today after reading hollys blog.......although totally different my husband had a head injury and had really bad headaches and he was put onto human epilepsy tablets as they are the treatment for brain nerve damage although he had no epilepsy and the side effects of this were not good and made him feel quite poorly and they made him feel as though he was drunk and he was glad to stop them so don't know how similar ones would feel to an animal .... i do feel that the stress involved with repeatadly taking a dog to the vets who really doesn't like it for blood tests etc makes them so unsettled and unhappy that i would think long and hard about that... i like you think that tests to find out if it is a tumour or  not are pointless as no treatment will be given.... i'm sure others here are more qualified than me to say whats good or not but i know you will make the right desision on what to do... if it was me i would do just as you have and just see what develops with the epilepsy and then think about what quality of life holly has from then on... don't worry about running up the vets bills.. there are lots of friends on here that i'm sure will continue to help......lots of love jane troy and rossi xxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

hi claire..such good news that holly has had a good fit free day....although you don't like leaving her behind when you walk it might just be for the best as perhaps the strain of hopping on three legs is just to much for her....my old weimaraner so wanted to go but in the end it was kinder not to take him as he kept falling over and the vet said it was probably doing him mor harm than good so we literally just put him on his lead and let him sniff outside the front of the house !!!   oh the joys of all of us getting older.......have a good day.xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

claire just reading yesterdays blog......my boxer has what we refer to as his "stress puff " i.e the minute soemthing happens that he isn't happy with or he feels nervous or even exited he start to really really puff and pant badly and this could relate to how holly starts to pant and heave sometimes......after doing this he will also drink lots of water and drain the bowl....also my weimaraner has regular days every week when he just decides to not eat and nothing will pass his lips all day and then the  next day eats again and we have no reason for this.he is also covered with lumps that we keep getting checked but they all seem to luckily be fatty (fingers crossed} but i can agree that they do come up alarmingly quickly .just thought it might help to reassure you that some of these problems are shared by other dogs. keep up the good work....xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Claire and Holly, Just read your blog, Things sound a bit better, So pleased for you, about five years ago i adopted Meg a cross border collie who was about 9 years old and had some problems with her, Some similar sounding to Holly,s  She was only with us about three years and left us devasted but i can now look back and see that even that short time was  the most rewarding and happy time of hers and our lives, We still miss her dearly after four years but  have now got three shelties and a large sloppy dog and their lives are completly spoilt and i am afraid they own us hook, line and sinker,  Holly sounds as if she is enjojing her life and is in a home where love shows no bounds, Keeping my fingers crossed that things will continue to get better, Love Sukimax and the rabble, xxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi there Claire and Holly Just wanted to say hope all well with both of you and I too have been following your blog.... Well Holly is very lucky to have found you and I am sure she is enjoying allof the creature comforts and loads of TLC she is evidently getting. Claire just go with your instinct non evesive treatment is probably best I too am having to make the same decisions with my cat at the moment. Charlie is doing exceptionally well and is on a steroid injection once a month at the moment for a kidney tumour which was diagnosed in early November. I could have had got a more definate conclusion by getting him into theatre but it would have only been for a veterinary medical science purpose really and as my vet said if he is ticking along and eating and doing all the usual then great. Holly looks so sweet in the photos and she sounds as though she has playful moments which is fab so keep doing what you are doing and wishing you both the best  XX  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you to everyone who has as always passed on their support and kind words/wishes to Holly and I. Holly is not ready to pass over yet. Of course, at her age and with health problems I am more than aware that this will and could happen at anytime. Currently Holly is very happy despite her problems. She occasionally has her off days but most older people and animals do. If As it stands Holly loves life, and so I will keep trying for her. I've updated the blog for you all to read. Sorry it was a late one today. Claire and Holly xx  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If I was in Claire's shoes I would do all I could to help Holly with meds and non invasive tests/treatment.  I personally would not be putting her through any trauma of xrays or operations.  It is a personal thing that only Claire can decide and I have no doubt she will make the right decisions for her and Holly.  Hugs to both Claire and the yummy Holly.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so blunt or rude. My personal thoughts are that as long as Holly is not suffering and for as long as she is enjoying life then thats what she should continue to do. As far as putting her through an anesthetic, I wouldn't want to risk it at her age especially if nothing maybe gained from it. For me, I think if my vet advised me that there was anything I could do medication wise or test wise that is not going to cause her any stress and may prolong her life then I would be inclined to give it my best shot. But thats just me and I don't mean to affend anyone that thinks differently. I know that Claire is doing a fantastic job with Holly and whatever decision she makes will be the best thing for Holly. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm sorry if my sort of comment was not what Claire wanted or expected - I take your point, ML. However, with an old and poorly dog, it must be in her mind. I stand by what I said, but I'm sure Claire will make the right call if she needs to. All best wishes to her and Holly.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

From reading Holly's blog, I was under the impression that Claire is looking for advice on what treatment or tests for Holly to have not whether she should have her put to sleep or not. Love to Holly. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is such a difficult decision - it always is. I've made it for four dogs over time and I'd had all of them since puppies. I think that makes it easier in an odd way, because the deterioration is more noticeable. In Holly's case, where you've taken her on in old age... terribly difficult. My own feeling is, that unless you're sure she's happy with her existence, you should let her go. She's been cared for at the end, and she may now be ready to go. If it's a week or a month sooner than she might live, left alone, it's not going to matter to her, only you, sadly. But it's always like this. The pain is the owner's, not the dog's. But it may be the last and best thing you give her. Not sure this is any help at all. It's my own view that sooner is better than later, but no one will judge you for feeling differently - you know her, after all. I really do wish you all the best, whatever you decide.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Claire, this is so tough on you;  what a brick you've been through all of this, and I don't think anyone could criticise you whatever decision you make.
I know that's not what you've asked though, you'd like help with this.   And for what it's worth, my personal feeling would be that if it were me, given all the information you've passed on, I think I would be letting Holly have a peaceful last whatever length of time she has left, with all the love and support you can give her.   The only thing which gives me pause for thought is the heaving she's doing, that must be rotten for her although I think you suggested it doesn't seem to bother her too much.
My reason for feeling this is mainly because of her age really.   No-one knows of course how long she may live, and I guess with the problems she has, no intervention would probably give her less time. but at least she would not be being messed about with.   I can only say what I feel, this is my gut reaction, you may feel more inclined to give her more of a chance and, as I say, no-one would criticise you whatever you decide.   And others may feel different, I'm sure some will.
Good luck, whatever you decide, and you certainly have the support of me and my two xx

As Sue has pointed out, She has become quite the celebrity now. I have had a very kind offer from someone who is going to make her a harness and am touched by the kindness people are showing Holly and I. I feel like she owns so many people, and I am the person priveliged enough to have her live with me. Holly's blog has now been updated for today and there are a few more bits up for sale on ebay. I have followed Holly's blog/story, she is so like my 13 year old collie (albeit with one less leg), I wonder at her age, my girl has looked elderly since she was 11 months old due to her whiteish muzzle. Thanks Bess 'n' Barney's mum we have discussed with Shirley when she first posted about costs for Holly and she is going to let us know if any is required.  Shirley had already put the word out within networks she is involved with.  Teo you did so much for Jess and your offer of help for Holly is so kind, we are sure with what you contributed for Jess will well cover anything that is required.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Is it possible that Jess' fund could be used to help Holly?   I seem to remember it wasn't all used up as Jess didn't have the surgery in the end, although I know some was used for her vet fees.     Good luck with Holly, you're doing such a great job Claire.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

http://handicappedpets.com/www/index.php/component/content/article/33-dog-brace-and-splint/250-heavy-duty-support-harness.html When Angus could no longer walk unassisted we got one of these type harnesses from the USA. It looks like they no longer have the one that we bought but it was very similar to this one, I will have a root around in the shed - If I still have it you may like to borrow it if you think it would be suitable. He was a large Old English Sheepdog so I think that the body size may well be suitable.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

thank you very much milly's mum for the links. The allsafe doesn't look like it will be suitable. I need a nicely lined or padded harness that is suitable for both summer and winter ie won't make her too hot in summer with a long strap handle that has a centre of gravity on it, possibly based on a sled dog harness?With conventional ones, if she were to slip they would'nt give any support for me to hold her back end up, so I need one that will also support her back end too and also does'nt rub her stump. The only ones that I found that are soft enough not to rub her stump are a puppia dog harness and the cosydogs harness, but neither have a handle or back end support which is what I'm looking for.I've got a design in mind, and am emailing people who do custom harnesses to see if anyone could make her one :)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just read Holly's latest blog and wonder whether you may find this information useful. When our darling Rottie girl had to have her leg removed due to cancer, like you I hunted everywhere for a support. Whilst searching, I was recommended to an American company called DogLeggs (www.dogleggs.com). I don't know whether they are still around but they produced some very good supports for doggie amputees. Distance and getting the correct measurements proved a little difficult as we needed it asap. In the end we decided upon a really good back seat car harness with lovely wide comfy straps and a decent 'handle' to support her with. The Rottie-sized harness cost approx ?90 but one for Holly would be 'cheaper'. A friend's company sells them but we bought ours from Over the Top (www.overthetop.co.uk). It was called 'The ALLSAFE harness'. Wishing dear, sweet Holly all the luck in the world and that she shakes off the infection which is making her feel poorly.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just read Holly's Blog which brought tears to my eyes - she writes so well! It has to be said, you are SUCH a truly wonderful person for taking Holly into your home and for giving her such kindness, as well as all the home comforts and the company of your pussy cats! When our now dearly departed old black Lab was poorly following a stroke and was off her food (unbelieveable for her!) our vet suggested putting powdered glucose into her drinking water to help build her strength. I'm not sure whether Holly's vet thinks this would be okay for her at this time but just thought it was worth a mention. I'm keeping just about everything crossed 'this end' that her horrible problem goes away so that she can continue to enjoy life with her new, caring family!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I don't know what they were on about with the snow. We've not had a flake so at least there will be no problems getting there. Very excited about meeting her. At the moment the kennels are calling her Holly. I have ordered her frontline and drontal, a special harness to support her walking, booked her a provisional appointement at the vets for Friday and she is booked at the provisionally dog groomers for the 25th Jan with my fathers collie. In the unlikely event that she can't come here all the stuff will be sent with her, and I will happily help with the first leg of transport.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As Nina says if she'd been allowed to stay with the finder there wouldn't have been any kennel fee to pay. Maybe somebodys heart is breaking that they haven't got the money to pay for her release. Perhaps we shouldn't judge until we know the full circumstances. Somebody has obviously cared enough in the past to see her through the trauma of losing her legLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My god what is wrong with some people, that poor mite has been a life long companion to someone how dare they refuse to pay a release fee for her, they obviously did not care about her that much to have lost her in the first place, an old lady like her should be loved and treasured, i would sell my home if it meant being re united with one of my dogs, i just dont get some people. They dont deserve you sweetheart, i hope a lovely home comes along very soon for you, god bless and good luck, lets hope you wont be waiting too long. xxx

Well said Flojo.  The previous owners don't derserve a dog.  This is prob the best outcome, at least she will be looked after, so glad it's a good outcome for her.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I would say the dog warden should be thanked, what sort of owner leaves their dog in kennels and refuses to pay the fee, the dog wasn't microchipped, completely the owners responsibility, makes me livid, no excuse!  Lets hope the poor girl can get a nice new home in her old ageLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Surely if the dog warden had let the dog stay with the finders there would be no fees to have been paid.  Dog warden is there no way of having a no fee to pay situation after all would seem that it was you that wouldnt let the dog stay with finder.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This lovely girl's owners have been traced but they won't pay the money to get her out of kennels so she will be up for rehoming when her seven days are up.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bless her heart, I hope she is not a xmas throw out, what a shame she could not stay with the finder, at least she would have had some home comfortsLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Finder wanted to care for her here until her 7 days were up, but the dog warden said it wasn't an option and she is now in kennels, number 01948 662931. Owners have 7 days to claim her from there. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
