Isabelle, would it be possible for you to get out to that area with the man who has seen this dog? Could he/you set out a feeding station? What time of day does he see the dog? Is it always around the same time? How close does the dog come to him? Could the area be freshly postered to include the possible sighting? Have others seen the dog? Do try and make the most of this possible sighting. Fingers crossed for you.
isabelle
Have had no news for a long time and have been completely devestated. But tonight we had a call from a man who says he is working in the dunchideok area near Haldon (not so far from golf course area) and he said that he keeps seeing a completely black german shepherd, unnacompanied. He only just found our number on the posters. Please, please anyone who reads this and is around here could you look out for this dog sounds like it may well be Cate. If you do see her please try to catch her or phone asap. Thank you

Hi Isabelle sorry to see that Cate hasnt made it home to you yet, I am travelling around Somerset/dorset/devon/wiltshire and swindon over the next few days so will make sure I have a poster of her in the car! Fingers crossed she is found soonLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Janie. just had a sighting today.  Someone left a message at a local shop that they had seen a dog like Cate on its own in Ashcombe woods.  They didn't say when or exactly where and apparently didn't leave a contact number, so don't know all the info.  Have just come back from looking around that area.  Again, it ties in with the golf course etc.  If anyone is in that area or knows dog walkers around there, please let them know.  I didn't realise that the posters had been taken down, but I certainly wouldn't put it past the council who haven't been that friendly about the issue.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

any more sightings? are you aware all the posters have been removed from kinsteignton, i think the council might have had a clear upLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Janie, the sighting by the roadside was on the kingsteignton side of the duel carriageway between newton abbot and exeter and it was opposite the turn off for Ugbrooke House, as I said, that could tie in with the golf course area especially if the dog sighted a couple of days after on the public footpath area was her.  Have been our repeatedly and with our neighbours dog in case he could track her down, but nothing yet.  Thanks also Helen, much appreciated if others have posters out there, I notice mine are getting quite weather worn and will need replacing soon. Another bizarre thing is that I went with friend to Dartmoor the other day and saw what really looked like dog mess with carrots in it, it had been there a while.  Cate's favourite food at home was carrots and I had been putting lots of carrots all round the golf course area, they have gone, but I suppose that could have been any animal.  Have left my details at the Haytor visitor centre where we went, but should perhaps take some posters up that way when i can.  Long shot I guess, but everything is worth a try.  So kind that people care enough to keep checking, thank you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thankyou, Helen 87, I know Isabelle will be very grateful for your help. She has done so much, and has been really proactive in the search for her beloved Cate. She will really appreciate your support. Cate is a friendly dog, but by now will be nervous. She may be coaxed with food, as she must be hungry. We really could do with some more positive sightings.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sorry to hear that Cate has gone missing, but sightings are something positive in your search. i cant possibly even begin to know how you must be feeling, I myself have a gsd. I live in somerset, near yeovil and my partners parents live in Chard, we often go down to Dawlish at weekends as we take our dog to the beach at Dawlish Warren. We were due to go last weekend but the car broke down, so are planning on going sunday, I will print of a poster and keep in the car, and keep an eye out for her. Does she like other dogs, would she be likely to approach our gsd if we spotted her? many thanks and good luck with your seach, I hope your baby comes home soon!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for all your comments, and Debra that is so sweet it really made me cry.  I haven't given up hope I just feel frustrated that i can't be out there all the time looking.  It seems so impossible trekking around all day with my little 2 year old in my arms.  Thanks also for the tip about the newspaper, I have already done that and a lot of the response has come through that which is fabulous.  We have had another possible sighting the day after the roadside one.  I went to explore the area and put more posters up and I asked a couple of women who were walking from golf course towards Bishopsteignton whether they had seen her and they said they had seen a black pointy eared big dog on its own near the golf course on a footpath where the trees had been cut back and replanted.  I went immediately to check all around that area but had no luck, then my little boy fell over and I had to give up and go home.  Will be out again this afternoon.  Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers they keep me going.  I will also be praying for your Serefina's return Debra.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Isabelle, I so hope that you have your baby home with you very soon. I completely understand how you feel, up one moment and feeling a bit desparate the next. My Sarafina has been missing for 7 1/2 weeks and I feel the same, often I'll feel both of these extreme feelings more than once in a single day. I am hopeful and then I'm down. Recently I contacted a reporter for the Northern Echo (I live in the North East in County Durham) and he wrote an article for the Northern Echo, which was out last week, and it was also in the free paper, The Advertiser, which everyone gets in this area and it covers a really wide area. It came out today and I have had 12-15 of my customers ask me about Sarafina and about half of them talked with me for a long time to get more information to help. So you might want to try contacting a local newspaper. It's good free advertising. Hang in there. Don't give up on your baby. I haven't given up on Sarafina. I have found posting my thoughts and feelings on this website quite helpful for me. I often feel those of us on this website, whether we have lost a dog, are a volunteer or work for doglost.co.uk, are the only ones who really, truly understand what I am going through and how I feel. Use this sight to help yourself. You and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she comes home soon to you. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

this deftinatly fits with the passage house sighting as there is a footbridge over the carrageway that leads to the passage house, via a footpath, she could easily have come down the embankmentLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have just had a phonecall from a woman who saw a black alsatian matching Cate's description, eating something by the roadside on the duel carriageway between Newton Abbot (Kingsteignton area) and Exeter.  It was just before the turning to Ugbrooke House  and she mentioned something about Ideford Arch.  The sighting unfortunately was yesterday at 9.45am so now she could be anywhere.  But it seems to fit in with the Golf Course, Ashcombe, Bishopsteignton and Kingsteignton sightings as all those areas back onto each other pretty much.  The woman said she was going in the Exeter direction, but the doesn't necessarily mean she continued that way.  I'm not sure exactly where the Ugbrooke House turning is, but am going to go out first thing when it is light and just look round that area and surrounding ones.  If anyone is driving that way or walking that way please keep an eye out and if anyone gets close enough, she would respond to her name and also definitely to food. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

the GSD is 'my' breed' so i notice the breed more than others, and i have spotted several GSDs including a beautiful black one being walked in the bishopsteignton area, brian, the co ordinator for devon GSD rescue lives near there and walks his dogs up on shaldon golf course and around the surrounding areas, he might well have fosters too, it might be wise to contact him to check this sighting wasnt him walking a foster dog, or indeed another foster carerer as there are a few of us in this areaLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Isabelle, if possible poster that area really well. It may prompt more information regarding this dog, or other sightings. Will any of the Devon radio stations put out updates? If so, ask people in the Lindridge/Bishops Steignton area to be vigilant.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just had a call from a man in Lindridge near Bishopsteignton, said he saw a man walking a collie and a black alsatian near there last Saturday, just wondered if there was anything suspicious as he has never seen that dog before.  On another occasion he saw a black alsatian on its own near the Lindridge gates.  If anyone is in that area please keep a look out, thank you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had some conflicting information which has left me no learer about where Cate is and whether she is still out there.  Railtrack belatedly called to say a black dog was killed on the railtrack on thursday 4th Feb the day after Cate went missing.  It happen by teignmouth railway station.  One man on the scene says it was a labrador, and didn't have pointy ears, the other says looking at the photos of Cate he thinks it was her. I emailed photos of cate to the golfer that spotted the dog on the golf course and he too is pretty sure it is her.  Since then there have been sightings in Ashcombe and Dawlish Warren area again.  As well as that we got a call from someone who had caught a black alsatian at the Drum Bridges roundabout near Trago and Stover thinking it was Cate, but it wasn't, it was however a black alsatian, much larger width than Cate who is very lean and with smaller ears and a lot fluffier.  So have no idea what to think and and sometimes feeling grief and sometimes hope, but still looking, because nothing is definite.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unbelievably a straying black, female GSD was caught recently in Stover, near the area where there have been possible sightings of Cate - but this dog isn't Cate. Isabelle is trying to find out how long this other GSD has been roaming. If she was only out for 24 hours or so, then earlier sightings may well have been Cate. There is a lot of information still missing regarding possible sightings and other incidents involving a similar dog, and Isabelle is trying hard to fill in the blanks, in the hope of learning more regarding Cate's whereabouts.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have had a phonecall from someone saying they saw Cate yesterday, or a dog identical to her photo at Lady's Mile in Dawlish on the way to Dawlish Warren.  The dog was apparently going into a field.  Unfortunately the man didn't see the newspaper article with my number till today and the sighting was yesterday morning.  She did love Dawlish Warren, but has only ever got there by car.  If anyone is in that area, please look out.  We searched around that area this morning, but with no luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for all your efforts, janie. One of the problems seems to be in getting members of the public to describe the dog they saw. Cate is a typical GSD, with large, erect, pointed ears, and a dense coat. Even if someone doesn't know the breeds, it should be possible to describe those ears. You couldn't mix her up with a Labrador or retriever, for example.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

sorry cant edit my post..........a walker saw a black dog seemingly without a owner this morning, walking with a bit of a limp, but he wasnt sure if it was cate, he thought the dog he saw had a bit of aging grey on it, is cate showing her age since these photos were taken? thats a toughie, walkers come from miles around to walk dogs there, i was there this morning with my own dog (lots of posters) and my daughter was there this evening, and there was no sign of her, the train tracks go right over the  area so if she was seen on the tracks it is possible shes hiding there, but the area is vast including the racecourse, fresh water is always left outside the pub hopefully shes found thatLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Janie: Isabelle wasn't able to confirm that the Passage House Inn dog was Cate. They seemed to think the dog they saw had a red collar on. It was black, and ran away when they approached. It would be extremely helpful to know if there is anyone local with a black dog who allows it to roam?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

the passage house is almost on my doorstep,  what time was it when she was seen? is it too late to go down now, the pub will be shut, so the car park is quieter, the marsh area is a bit of a maze but very popular with dog walkers, Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thankyou VeganMalc, janie and family for your help. There has been another possible sighting of Cate this evening, in the carpark of the Passage House Inn, Hackney Lane, Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot. Isabelle has gone straight there to check it out. She would ask anyone in that area to be vigilant, and to call her if they think they see Cate. She thinks maybe Cate will come for food, and someone may be able to catch her that way.

We now have confirmation that the dog seen at Upton Pynes was not Cate. However there has been another reported sighting of Cate on the day she went missing, running alongside the railway line towards Newton Abbot. It is a huge relief that the next positive sighting of her was near the golf course at Teignmouth. Any help offered is being very gratefully received by Isabelle.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Janie, thanks so much getting your brother in law to look out, and for offering to go and look around tomorrow.  Yes, I would be so grateful if you could, I still feel she may be around that area or if not could head that way, she seems so lost.  I will have to go and seach the Upton Pyne area and surroundings but it's not a definite sighting, so it would be great if someone is still covering the first sighting area.  Her favourite food is carrots by the way, I know it sounds strange but she goes wild for them, could be good enticement.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes please, janie - Cate's mum would be so pleased to have your help. She feels it is more likely that Cate is around Teignmouth, the sighting around the golf course was a very positive one, whereas it hasn't been confirmed that the Upton Pynes dog was Cate.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

the distance between teignmouth golf and upton pine is about 30 miles, do you think she could travel that far in one day? is there anything in that direction that she could be heading for, old home, favourite walking place? i'm going to teignmouth tomorrow to have a good look round for her, shall i still go? A dog matching Cate's description has been sighted on or near the Teignmouth Golf Course on 7th Feb.  She was spotted at 11am by a golfer and I found out about it at about 1.30pm.  Went looking all around that area with a couple of friends, but it got dark and we had to give up for the day.  It's a huge area, lots of heath land if anyone is around there please look out for her and try to catch her, she is a very friendly dog - very food oriented aswell.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
