I have been monitoring the search for JAFFA from far off Australia. Nilu, Jaffa's owner is my daughter. I have also spent many a happy moment with Jaffa whenever I visited Oxford. I am aware how my daughter loved Jaffa and was devastated to hear about his death. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those wonderful people who helped Nilu to look for Jaffa. Thank you all.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
When tomorrow starts without me and I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry, the way you did today,
Remembering how I'd lay my head, In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you.
And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name, and petted me with her hand.
She said my place was ready in Heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But, as I turned to heel away, a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I never thought, that I would have to die.
I had so much to live for, so many sits and downs to do,
It seemed almost impossible, that I was leaving you.
I thought about our lives together, I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had.
Remember how I'd nudge your hand, and poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase, the bad guy, I'd "bark and hold".
If I could relive yesterday, just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you, just so I could see you smile.
But then I fully realized, that this could never be;
For emptiness and memories, will take the place of me.
And when I thought of treats and toys, I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did, my dog-heart filled with sorrow.
But then I walked through Heaven's gate, and felt so much at home;
As God looked down and smiled at me, from His beautiful golden throne.
He said, "This is eternity, And now we welcome you,
Today your life on earth is past, But here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last;
For you see, each day?s the same day, there's no longing for the past.
Now you have been so faithful, so trusting, loyal and true;
Though there were times you did things, you knew you shouldn't do.
But good dogs are forgiven, and now at last you're free;
So won't you sit here by my side, and wait right here with me?"
So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart.
For every time you think of me, I'm right there, in your heart.

Sadly, Jaffa has been found. We were able to find Jaffa in the daylight today. He was lying on the central island on the A40 between Elsfield and the Green Road roundabout... just 300m as the crow flies from his home and his armchair. It's a dangerous stretch of road so I have contacted the council about picking him up. He has been dead for at least a couple of days. The cruel irony is that he's the only dog I ever knew that was scared of driving. Every time we hit the ring road he'd wedge himself into the floor behind the front seat till we stopped. For him to attempt to cross the A40 means he must have been running blindly, likely from a firework. I can only hope he died quickly.
I would like to thank all of you who have helped me over the past fortnight. I will be forever grateful. I will contact you individually in time. I can at least know that Jaffa was an incredibly happy and loved (god, so loved) dog during his life. thank-you again, so much. Nilu xLast edited: 2010-11-22 13:39:42 by Nilu

I have now spoken to the highways agency and I asked them to check all the way back to 5th November,they havnt picked up any dogs at all within this time,only cats and foxes.
Shereen
Nilu how awful for you,also for the dog involved,ill try and make some phonecalls in the morning to see if we can get to the bottom of this : (
Nilu
Hello, firstly thanks Shereen.

Another frustrating day. A very lovely lady called me today saying she saw a black dog around 4pm lying likely dead in the section of the A40 between Elsfield and the Green Road roundabout. She described the dog as clearly visible, not moving on the centre island. I was in London but fortunately very good friends were searching in their car not much more than an hour later. No dog. Whilst it was dark, they went up and down the road several times with a torch. As soon as I got back from London I also looked as much as I could on foot and no dog. This sighting is literally 200-300 metres from my home and maybe 500m from where Jaff was lost. The dog warden did not receive any calls tonight. I have called all the vets in the area on their emergency line and none have received had a dog called in. I will look again at first light. It is possible the dog wasn't picked up but was alive and crawled into the trees on to the island. It's too dangerous to access this area on foot. Thank-you again for all the help I am continuing to receive. Nx
Shereen
Ive spoken to Crunchies animal rescue ,they have had no dogs in similar to Jaffa.

Hello Everyone - after a couple of really sad days have got my mojo back. Thanks again to the lovely people around me (Kat & June) more 'still looking, not giving up' signs have gone up in the Northern Oxford villages. Tonight we hit Noke, Woodeaten, Islip, Otmoor, Murcot, Oddington, Horton cum Studley etc. It's occurred to me that Jaffa may be wanting a few weeks of smoking jackets and guinea fowl. thanks again, N.
Nilu
thanks Shereen. I've been ringing round but no luck so far. The sighting was 4-5 days ago now at start of the footpath to Rectory Farm in Stanton-St-John. I think we can assume the sightings in Headington were other dogs. Have left messages with South Oxfordshire Council re: Wheatley accident.
cheers
Shereen
Hi Nilu,I gave Cherwell and Oxford city councils a call today just to make sure Jaffa hadnt been picked up,then my phone broke!!
make sure West Oxford,South Oxfordshire,and Vale of the White Horse councils are aware of Jaffa if you havnt done so already just incase he was picked up and driven out of the area and reported with a surrounding council.Welldone for helping the dog thismorning...I hope hes reunited with his owners too....Any ideas on time and date for the sighting in Stanton St John? ill add it to the map.
Nilu
hello - an update
1. The dog in Oakfield isn't Jaff (too young)
2. I still haven't heard about the dog hit by a car in Wheatley - don't even know if this is a true report.
3. Just spoke again to the lovely lad Gina who reported a sighting in Stanton St John - she confirmed he had a brown collar on and looked healthy. She's also let people know in Forest Hill.
4. We found a black lab cross with white markings on his chest in Bury Knowle park this morning without an owner - not Jaff, but reported to the dog warden.

Nx
Nilu
thank-you very much! will follow it up. thanks again, Nilu
Jeffreysmummy
A long shot and a distance from you but but labrador forums have a found labrador cross with a white mark on his chest. It isn't a good match described as not having a chip but they don't always show up and the collar is described as black. This dog is at the Oakfield vet group in Atherstone Warks.
Nilu
well, it's been some day. firstly, I must say a big, big thank-you to everyone who helped search today. I am so grateful. several results
1. I think the sightings in Headington were a red herring. We found out there is a black lab in that area that often escapes from the house and roams around
2. There has been a report (3rd hand) of a black dog on the slip road at Wheatley hit by a car and lying on the road yesterday. When we went to look at all possible places there was no evidence of any dog or a dog in the nearby trees. It is possible that the roads department picked up the dog and we are following that through. We've also put up flyers along the road where it may have happened.
3. At the same moment I heard of 2 above, a women called me very confident she saw Jaffa 2-3 days ago at Stanton-St John. She said he stood out because he was so handsome! We'd previously plastered Stanton-St John with flyers and it seems a town of dog lovers so if he's there, I'm confident they'd pick him up.
All of this is against a backdrop that black labs seem the most popular dog in Oxfordshire, so I'm not being too macabre about the possible dead dog.
Possibly the best news is that all of this region know we're looking for Jaff (thank-you again, all of you) so we have the best possible chance of tracking him down. Nilu x

Hi Dee - not sure if you planning to come to mine or not. Am heading off now to look around the headington area where he was spotted yesterday. Others are looking around the hospitals, risinghurst headington, shotover and wick's farm. other areas to look if you have time are barton neighbourhood / sandhills or any of the farms - they are so big! thank-you

Nilu/Dee im just getting Dees details so I Can give her yr Address,And with those details of sightings ill try get a quick map done and post it on here and email to you Nilu.x
Nilu
Hi Dee, thank-you so much for looking for him! He's basically a 30kg lapdog. Most people are coming to mine at 9am tomorrow morning (did Shereen give you my address if you plan to join?) My plan is to go out on the farms at dawn but be back to meet people. Whilst there's been lots of sightings in the Headington area and 6 people are looking there and Shotover, a few of us will still look at Wicks, Lower and the other farm across Bayswater. I just sent a details of Jaff's movements over the past week to Shereen by email. Nx
Shereen
8am Dee,hopefully Nilu will be on a bit later with details,Thanks for keeping a look out.x
Dee
What time is the search tomorrow? I've been keeping a look out whilst walking my dogs but not seen him.

Email from Nilu...There was a couple of sightings of a black lab in Headington near St Anne's street at lunch. Also someone saw a black lab alone there on Monday. We've asked 3 owner's of black labs none of which had their dogs off the lead today.
Nilu has gone back out to search the area,so very hopefull jaffa will be back soon!!!
There is a search taking place tomorrow if not.
Shereen
Nilu,the fliers can be put in plastic pouches(the office ones for documents) upside down,so the opening is at the bottom to save them from the rain .Also, I realy recomend you plot on a map where these sightings have been as dogs move in a triangular pattern,we then may beable to predict which direction hes moving in,times on the sightings are also usefull,if you can do this,you could email it to me to have a look at?
Shereen
Hi Adam,Sorry ive only just got on here,Dawn and Dusk seem to be the more natural way for a dog,,Im sure today with all of the rain he would of holed up somewhere to keep dry,not many dogs actually want to be out in the rain by choice,if I let my dogs out to the loo and its raining they take one look outside and come back in again!! I think a combanation of walking and driving realy as you say,you can cover the area better in a car....id have my window down to listen out for barking...but thats me!then obviously some walking for the search deeper in the farms/woodland,checking undergrowth/barns,hedgerows(some dogs can use hedgerows to keep out of sight) etc.anything else you need to know just ask...normally would of seen this sooner,had to go out today though.Last edited: 2010-11-11 23:54:55 by Shereen
Nilu
oh, cheers Adam. thursday's update - got a few calls today - no sightings but people who have seen flyers and are making suggestions. am focussing of replacing existing flyers that are now a little tatty with new, 'still missing' flyers. Jaffa, please come home. N.
Adam
Hi Shereen. I have a couple of questions that you might be able to answer about looking for Jaffa (or direct me to a website with tips). I wonder what is the best time of day to search? During daylight seems obvious, but is a dog likely to bunker down in the middle of the day and wander around more around dawn and dusk? I've also searched in 2 main ways. One is walking around the farms calling/searching. The other is slowly driving around the smaller roads looking for movement on the farms. The later covers a larger area, but relys on him wandering around. Would you suggest one is a better use of time than the other?
Nilu
Just giving an update. No sightings sadly. Focussed on Lower Farm today with 'dog whistle' but no luck. Am replacing fliers that are getting tatty. Am organising big blitz with lovely volunteers to search the wider area this Saturday. Will call around to all shelters tomorrow.
Shereen
Nilu,Have you tryed looking on Google earth....its well worth looking at lower farm,barton,it may give you ideas of where to look and wher Jaffa may be hiding up,I find it vey useful and have just loooked on there,there quite a few areas of trees where he could be laying low!
Shereen
Nilu, your doing a brilliant job!!!.Now them fireworks are gone ,im hoping it wont be long now.sounds like you have all areas covered.if you find an area he may have been sighted or staying ,he will be hungry,so I strongly suggest a disposable bar b q and some sausages/Kippers or anything realy smelly,The smells sould draw him out....works wonders!!!Good luck.xxxLast edited: 2010-11-09 23:06:43 by Shereen
Nilu
Just updating. No sightings today but also no fireworks so still have hope. Fliers went up in Risinghurst and Cowley today. Wick's Farm is being covered by fellow dog owners. I will be focussing on Lower Farm area. thanks again, 'Shereen'
Nilu
Thank-you! no sightings on Mon 8th but did meet a fellow dog owner who saw Jaff the night he ran on the 5th. He must have doubled back. He was on Lower Farm in Barton/Marston at around 7pm on Friday. He approached the man and his dogs who was about to put him on a lead but bolted when a firework went off. Fliers are now around Stanton St John and Beckley. Friends looked around Elsfield this morning and I spent 1.5 hours on Lower Farm.
Shereen
Good Luck for today Nilu,remember to use low calm movements/voice if you see him,he may need to be quite close to you before he recognises you.x
Nilu
Hi! Thanks so much for the offer but a few friends and Jaff's best doggy friend are all helping first thing tomorrow. He (well, a black dog with brown collar, alone) was sighted behind the community centre at Barton but when people spotting he was distressed called him he ran towards Bayswater Road. Later in the evening some kids saw a black dog on that side but by then the flippin fireworks had started again and whilst there were 5 of us, he didn't appear. The whole area is plastered with flyers - I swear half the neighbourhood (reminds me that people are all basically good) are on the lookout - so am feeling super hopeful! thanks again. N.
Shereen
Hi Nilu,Make sure you have posters up around the Barton Area,Do you know exactly where this dog was seen? are you able to get there at first light in the morning to look? if you need to call me please do (my number is on the email I sent you) ill be up till late.
Nilu
A dog matching Jaffa's description was sighted a couple of times this afternoon (7th) in the Barton area. I was told the dog looked distressed and was running away when called. Even so, it's hopeful news. N.Last edited: 2010-11-07 20:44:12 by Nilu
