- Bolton NewsMystery after ‘missing’ man seen travelling on train
8:43am Monday 30th May 2011
A PENSIONER who has been missing for nearly two months caught a train to London soon after he disappeared, it has emerged.
Norman Johnson, aged 70, who lives in Tonge Moor, left the Monaco ballroom, in Hindley, on Tuesday, March 29, and had not been seen since.
But it has just been revealed that Mr Johnson boarded the train after a statement for the ticket was sent to his home seven weeks later.
He was later seen on a train travelling from London Euston to Wolverhampton at 8.50pm on March 30. The train stopped at Coventry, Birmingham and Dudley as well as Wolverhampton and it is possible Mr Johnson got off at any of the stops as officers have been unable to verify the exact details of the sighting as it was reported to them only recently and no CCTV is available.
It is possible Mr Johnson is suffering from dementia.
Det Sgt Tony Lunt, said: “Those close to Norman are extremely worried about him and we are keen to find out where he is.
“We know it is asking something of people to cast their minds back a couple of months, but our inquiries have been relentless throughout this time and very recently we were able to get information about this sighting on the train from London to the Midlands.”
Mr Johnson’s friend, Colin Sweeney, aged 65, who shares a house with the pensioner, added: “It is a glimmer of hope. I was certain Norman was dead but not now. You have to remain hopeful, but I still have to be realistic. My worst fear was that he had fallen or was in a shed, but now if he is in the city he could be being looked after in a shelter. It is just a mystery.”
Anyone with information should call police in Bolton on 0161 856 0064 or 0161 872 5050.

- poster e mailed out to helpers in euston area.
this would make some sort of sense because i did get a call a few weeks ago from a helper saying is this an april fool...and saying they knew norman about 20 years ago before he moved...and at that time he lived underneath the railway arches next to the station...cannot remember which station though...but if he has dementia maybe he would think he still lived there so he caught a train to get home....chances are with no money he is still in the area...

- maybe if he now in the London area alerts could be sent to the SE team

- After weeks with no sightings or news there has been a development. This morning Colin received a letter addressed to Norman from an enforcement agency for an outstanding amount relating to a train ticket on the 30th March (the day after Norman's disappearance).from London Euston to Bolton. It is possible that somehow Norman got on a train and ended up at London Euston where he was caught travelling without a ticket, the agency obtained his name and address from his bus pass and issued the penalty but.for whatever reason.he never made it home? Hopefully the Police will now be able to review CCTV and speak to the enforcement agency etc to find out what might have happened to Norman next..."
Perhaps there is some hope.

- Of Course we have all been there before with missing dogs, where our hopes are raised by reports of sightings. But his friends are clutching at any sign of hope.

- Norman is still missing. And news updates are very slow. But There has been a couple of sightings of Norman. Granted the first few were in a few hours of him going missing, but the police have CONFIRMED they have a sighting of him at 10am on the wednesday morning (not sure the source of the confirmation or even where he was sighted at that time.) I also know there is an Agiity person, whom is pretty certain she saw Norman on the Thursday morning, but this sighting has not been confirmed by the police.

Man missing from in Bolton
Thursday 31st March, 2011
Norman Johnson
Police are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of a 70-year-old man.
Norman Johnson, who lives in Tonge Moor, Bolton, was last seen at around 7.30pm on Tuesday 29 March 2011 as he attended a function at the Monaco Ballroom in Hindley.
He may be suffering the early stages of dementia and that night was driving a silver Vauxhall Astra, registration number FE53 WZU. Police are still looking for this vehicle.
Norman is white, 5ft 7in to 5ft 8in tall, of slim build, with grey short hair, a thick grey moustache and wears gold rim glasses.
He was last seen wearing a black suit with a black jumper that had a grey band around the middle. He was also wearing black boots.
Detective Sergeant Lee Shaw from Bolton CID said: "It has now been almost 48 hours since Norman's disappearance and his family are obviously very concerned about his welfare.
"It is extremely out of character for him to disappear and he also does not have his medication with him.
"We would urge anyone who knows of the whereabouts of Norman or who may have seen his car to get in touch with us."
Anybody with information is asked to contact the CID office at Bolton on 0161 856 2161.Last edited: 2011-04-01 19:51:19 by Angus - 2011-04-01 14:37 Tigermouse
