What an amazing outcome !

For one, just thinking about what the owners went through watching their dog go over a cliff is an unbearable thought, then the days and nights after that, sick with worry... then to get a call like this.. just brilliant.

What a tough cookie Poppy is, and as everyone has said, WELL DONE for that man for risking his life and saving this gorgeous girl.

lord only knows how she felt up there all alone, just does not bare thinking about.

He really is a true hero, shame the national papers cannot get hold off this story, it really is a heart felt story.

Sorry to hear Poppy has broken her pelvis is the process, but with all the TLC she should make a ful recovery, we are all thinking of her.

Would love to have been a fly on the wall seeing the reunion xxx
magda
this is such a wonderful story with a happy ending. |I hope Poppy will recover quickly and not suffer too much pain!! And thanks to the hero who saved her, the coastguards for trying to find her and the wonderful owners who sent a message to owners like me who have not yet found their beloved dog. It must be hay fever- my eyes are burning...

UPDATE FROM OWNER poor Poppy hope she makes a speedy recovery. One very plucky and lucky dog. Sending healing thoughts to her from us all.

Hi Jane

Thought I would send you an update re Poppy.

She has once again been back to the vet as she did not seem to be recovering from her limp. On further x-ray it transpires she has broken her pelvis in three places. She has to stay in her cage for the next few weeks and then very gentle lead exercise for a further few weeks when hopefully she should be reasonably back to normal.

Yet again shows just how plucky this dog is. A broken pelvis yet not a whimper to suggest anything wrong - I think that's why she was diagnosed as lame.

I have added a link to the story in our local paper if anyone wishes to read about it and see her picture.

WOW! I am so relieved that Poppy is now safely home. As we know, there are those who will go 'the extra mile' for a dog and this chap certainly has gone loads of extra miles to get the lovely Poppy to safety, he is very brave and can certainly be called 'a hero'. Poppy must also be one plucky lady to have survived all this time alone on the cliff, owners must be sooooo overjoyed to have her back. Please post the link to the newspaper article, what an amazing story. No more chasing seagulls now Poppy!
smileyt
How wonderful of that man! I too have tears in my eyes reading about his bravery and generosity. I hope he is blessed with many blessings! Welcome home Poppy. I too would appreciate a link to the newspaper story.

e mail from owner:

Just to let you know that there is an article in the Hastings Observer about Poppy's recovery. She is now microchipped and has been told in no uncertain terms that she will NOT be going on any cliff top walks ever ever again lol. She is slowly putting on weight and is looking better and better. We are so thrilled to have her back home, had almost given up hope but God came through for us.

Just thank God for the dear man who rescued her, we will definitely see him right. If anyone is looking for pet insurance for their dog I cannot recommend More Than enough, they have been absolutely fabulous and were over the moon when I told them about Poppy's return. They have offered to match our reward as well so hopefully soon our Hero will be getting a rightly deserved gift. I hope he has a nice weekend away somewhere lovely. He will forever be in my thoughts I love him so.

As regards the coast guard they did a fabulous job when they went down the cliff to look for Poppy on the day she went missing. They would have been unable to see her because her ledge was probably 100ft further down the cliff and she may have been trapped in a gorse bush at the time. My hero went up the cliff and by this time Poppy was visible on the ledge. We couldnt be absolutely sure that Poppy hadnt come back out because we left the cliff for about an hour to look for her at beach level which is why it was unrealistic to ask the coast guard to look again. They did all they could at the time and bearing in mind they are volunteers I think they do an incredible job. I called them several times after their search and they were always both helpful and extremely understanding of my plight. They too are heros.

To anyone else on the website who has lost a dog, please dont give up hope as you never know when a miracle may happen.

Thank you all for your lovely messages, I really appreciate it.
Shereen

Oh my goodness. What a lucky, lucky girl. What an absolute hero that man is. I am so glad Poppy is home and safe. No more chasing rabbits for a while Poppy :) xx

I am extremely pleased that Poppy has been returned safely - I have said so in an earlier posting. To be fair, however, I don't think it fair to criticise the coastguard - they do a demanding job brilliantly. We don't know the circumstances of the original search - I just very glad she's home and no-one was hurt.Last edited: 2011-05-05 13:56:22 by jobadger

REUNITED!!! details from texts from owner.

Poppy was found yesterday on a cliff ledge and was rescued.
She was found by a guy and she was stuck on a ledge about 50m up from Rock a Nore Beach. She is now safe at home, very tired and extremely skinny but OK.
She was very lucky as the man put himself in danger going up the cliff but owners are so grateful that he did. The local paper is doing a story.

WELCOME HOME POPPY STAY SAFE. You are one very lucky dog and must have a guardian angel watching over you.

HI

We were walking along the East Hill in Hastings which she has walked a few times before. We were staying at Shearbarn caravan park but we only live 5 miles down the road in Bexhill on Sea. She was chasing a seagull and we believe she may have jumped off the cliff. There was a guy perched on the edge of the cliff at the time who heard a lot of rustling where she went in and then nothing. Poppy is a VERY vocal dog who is always barking and squeaking when she is out on a walk. She had previously been barking when she was chasing the bird. We strongly feel that she went over the cliff. We call the coast guard and they kindly abseiled about 40ft down the cliff as near as they could get to where she went off but were unable to see anything. They had a whistle but the guy said he didnt hear any barking, whimpering or anything. We went down to the beach to try and get a view on what the cliff face was like where she went off. There is about a 50ft drop to a what seems to be quite large ledge but it is very difficult to see from beach level. Our fear is she is either trapped on a ledge, fell down a crevice or hole and is now trapped. Or she has since managed to return to the cliff or beach and has been picked up by someone. We only left the cliff top for about 45 mins but there were loads of people about and no-one mentioned a stray dog running around to the cliff railway people. We were then back on the cliff for about 2 hours while the coast guard were doing their thing. My friend then returned to the area on Tuesday and a guy offered to look along the bottom of the cliff and even managed to climb up about 10 foot but couldnt see anything. I have distributed posters and leaflets all around the East Hill, country park, old town and hastings and st. leonards sea front. I have advertised in our local magazine, informed the police and the dog warden and am on various google searches and lost dog websites. Will try and get some more photos downloaded but am a bit old fashioned and most of my pics have been printed and then deleted from the camera!

Will get searching some old SD cards to see what I can find.

Thanks again for all your help.
