Billie the toy poodle is a survivor
3:00pm Thursday 16th June 2011

A TERRIFIED toy poodle has defied the odds and survived a week in Wareham Forest on her own.

Tiny eight-month-old Billie, who weighs just three kilos, disappeared into the forest when she was chased by a bigger dog.

After she was finally reunited with her frantic owner, a veterinary surgeon said it was a “miracle” Billie was alive.

“My vet said he just couldn’t believe that a dog of this size was able to survive in the forest,” said owner Karen Harvey.

“You have foxes, badgers, there and even buzzards fly over the forest.”

Aside from being a little thin and having been covered in ticks and brambles, Billie is recovering well.

Speaking from her Poole home, Karen, who works as a canine behaviourist, said: “I was out walking my dogs, including Billie, when I passed a couple on bicycles, who had two larger dogs.

“While they put the German Shepherd on a lead, their labradoodle, a labrador/poodle cross, chased Billie.

“This couple saw my dog was frightened, but they didn’t even call their dog back. They later disappeared, I think they were completely irresponsible.”

Karen, aged 48, then spent 12 hours searching for Billie.

She later approached the free canine website, dogslost.co.uk.

Billie was included on the site’s database and several posters were pinned up in the forest.

After a string of sightings and missed opportunities, Billie was finally recovered by a thankful Karen six days later.

She said: “I was never going to give up on her.

“I think it is amazing that this little dog, which is a companion toy dog, managed to keep herself safe out there.

“It was just the most amazing relief to get her back. I cannot thank dogslost.co.uk enough for their help.”

Brilliant news. Welcome home Billie xx Stay safe now.

I am so happy to have Billie home safe and sound. Apart from being a little on the thin side, having loads of ticks on her body and a few mats with gorse and bramble under her armpits, she is none the worse for wear! I am not sure about me though!!
Jackie

WOO HOO so happy Billie is back with Karen who has done a fab job along with everyone else helping in the search. Just finished speaking to Karen who is obviously over the moon and can now get back to normal and catch up on some well earned sleep with Billie.

Billie went mad when she recognised Karen and is still running round the house with joy. Welcome home Billie lots of hugs and cuddles from everyone on DL. Jan x

Another sighting and close call at about noon today. Karen received a call from someone who had seen Billie, incredibly, sitting beneath one of her doglost posters further down the road from yesterday's sighting!
No sign of her at this location so Karen went back to where she was seen yesterday and, lo and behold, she was curled up on the bed that we had left for her! Karen approached very cautiously and quietly and could see that some of the food we had left for her had been eaten.
As Karen got closer Billie woke up, stood up slowly, and trotted off.
Karen went back to the car across the road in the Lawsons Clump car park to wait for a while. Billie came back to the bed area and Karen gently shook one of her belled toys. She was staring at Karen and moving towards her when a car went haring down the road between them and spooked her.
Karen's back out again shortly with a cat trap.

I was out there for a couple of hours this morning, but no sign. The food and water that had been left out for her in the area of last night's sighting had not been touched.

UPDATE: Unfortunately Billie ran away again but there are a couple of positives from this: We know she is alive and coping, and we know where she is (very close to where she originally went missing). We have moved her food, water and scented clothing to her new location and I will be back out there first thing to sit quietly and hopefully allow her to approach. Thanks again to the wonderful volunteers here at doglost who are an invaluable resource of encouragement and practical help. Hopefully I'll have really really good news tomorrow. Wish me luck! ~ David.

Bumped due to tonight's sighting. Owners are doing all the right things so hopefully she will be safe soon. Please, as it says below do NOT try to aproach her, she will run!. If she is seen please call the owner asap. Drop to the ground or walk the other way. If you can just kneel or sit and keep watch on which way she goes that would be a gtreat help. If you happen to have a ball handy it may atract her attention if you can toss it gently in the air or to one side but please stay calm and quiet.

There has been a SIGHTING of Billie tonight by her owner, who rang me. It was not far from the carpark area where she went missing from. She ran off when owner called her. I've gone through some things again with her owner on how to behave and have alerted Area Co-ordinator, Poochpal.

It is important if she is SIGHTED no-one tries to catch her but contact her owner a.s.a.p. Hope it is not too long before she is back HOME. Good luck. Jan x

Wishing you well on your search today, with a change in the weather there may be less walkers about today so hopefully Billie willbe brave enough to come out of hiding.

Shared on FB and Twitter. I'll be there Sunday morning for the early shift and will be taking an item of clothing with my scent on it and a bottle of urine(!)to spread around. I will inform the farmer at Sherford. We also need to take posters to local pet shops etc. in case anyone has found her and tries to sell her on, so will arrange that for Monday. Thanks to all who have been so generous with their time, help, prayers and compassion. We will do the same for you anytime it is needed. David.

Thank you Snoopy, I have been to Lawson's Clump this afternoon and alerted several dog walkers to the fact that Billie is missing. At one point I could hear high pitched barking in the distance but could not trace it. I think she is most likely to make her way back to the carpark in the late evenings/night so it would be good if if some thing with the scent of home could be left there.
Snoopy
Put some posters up at Sherford Bridge carpark but opposite side of road to Lawsons Clump and others up the hill past Lawsons on either side of road in small carparks and on notice board at start of housing estate. Hope she shows herself soon. Kaye.

Hi we met in the car park at Lawsons Clump. Will put up some posters around Wareham Forest tomorrow. Have you considered talking to the farmer at Sherford as he is often about the forest on his quad bike checking the cattle both sides of the road.
