If Chance could write a book about where he has been, and what he has been doing for the last 10 years, I am sure it would be a best seller. If only dogs could talk:-)xxx

What lovely photos. You must think you are still dreaming? Chance looks so contented with his family too. Why dont vets check microchips when we visit so they can cross check with the owners details? Just in case. Stay close now ChanceLast edited: 2014-01-19 16:46:34

Family reunited with their dog TEN YEARS after it went missing when its owner put it in the back garden

A family’s missing pet dog has been found 10 years after he disappeared - and in the nick of time, as he was a day from being put down.

The Staffordshire Bull terrier called Chance belonged to then 11-year-old schoolboy xxxx xxx who was heartbroken when his pet vanished.

He and his mum xxxxx xxxxxx put posters on lamp posts hoping to find the loveable black and white terrier.

After disappearing for so long, Chance is now reunited with xxxx and lives with him at his student flat in Cardiff.

How Chance had spent the last 10 years since vanishing from xxxx and xxxx’s garden in Barry, South Wales will always be a mystery

But as time passed they gave up hope of ever seeing three-year-old Chance again and bought another dog for xxxx to play with. But a decade later Chance was found weak and hungry in a city centre underpass and taken to a dog’s home.

Because of his age and his condition he was going to be put down, but luckily a vet scanned him for a microchip and xxxx ’s name and address came up.

xxxx, 44, from Barry, South Wales, said: 'It was like something from a children’s Disney movie.

'I had a phone call to say my dog had been found - I thought they’d made a mistake because we have two dogs and they were both in the house.

'Then they said it was a black and white Staffordshire - my heart leapt, I knew it was Chance.

Because of his age and his condition Chance was going to be put down - but a vet discovered his microchip

xxxx said it was very emotional seeing him again after 10 years is certain he recognised his long-lost owners 'We went to the dog’s home and recognised Chance straight away.

'And as soon as we said his name his ears pricked up as if he’d never forgotten us.'

How Chance had spent the last 10 years since vanishing from xxxx and xxxx’s garden in Barry, South Wales, in May 2004 will always be a mystery.

xxxx said: 'We bought him for xxxx when Chance was seven weeks old. We had him neutered, microchipped, the full works.

'Three years later xxxx went to school and I let him out in the garden, I went back out to let him in and he wasn’t there.

'We knocked on doors, looked everywhere and advertised it on the internet and in local papers.

'We did hundreds of leaflets and we never heard a thing.'

Chance was found in a shopping centre underpass 20 miles away in Newport and taken to the city’s Coronation Kennels.

Fantastic news. With regard to microchips it would appear that the Data Protection Act is being interpreted incorrectly by some of the microchip companies. I will personally email the Information Commissioners Office about this matter. As an update, just attempted to read Chance's story out to my husband and just couldn't do it as I was crying too much!Last edited: 2014-01-11 10:21:30 by Fran Daly

Tobys Mum. I agrree with you about microchipping. Wish more people would take advantage of it. Hopefully it will make a difference when the new law comes in of compulsory microchipping in 29016. I seem to remember another staffie on Doglost who was missing for about the same length of time as Chance. (Cant remember the name of the dog). I b elieve this dog was also reunited via the microchip. Wonderful, wonderful news.:-) (((HUGS))) to Chancexxx

How amazing is this - have a fantastic life with your family Chance and keep well. Gives hope to all those owners whose dogs have been lost for sometime. There, miracles do happen! xx

Amazing-so happy that Chance is back in his loving home---and what hope this gives to owners still looking for their dogs--but agree with Julie Hills message 10/01/14----the microchip in most cases will be registered to the dogs owner---if this isn't checked when someone other than the owner has the dog it is extremely worrying--I would think most owners looking for a lost dog have been hoping it will turn up at a vets and that they would be contacted--I agree the law should be changed --data protection is going a step too far when a careful owner has paid for their animal to have a microchip for protection and yet it isn't being protected in some circumstances.
Ellie
Wonderful news. Welcome home Chance, your story brought tears to my eyes too.
Julie Dogs
FANTASTIC story and I am so delighted Chance is home. But what if they had moved house and not updated the microchip? Worryingly, just this week I was told by Medivet that because of "Data Protection" if they find the details on a microchip don't match the details of the person who brings a dog in, they are not allowed to make direct contact with the person who registered the chip. Dog thieves knows this and tell the VET that the person who sold them the dog hadn't changed the chip. This has surely got to be changed by law!

This is one amazing story, and am so thrilled for Sion, and Chance that they have been reunited after all this time. The people who abandoned you Chance when you were poorly are as bad as the vile person who abandoned Jim. They will get their comeuppance: bring it on. Wishing Sion, and Chance a very "Happy New Year", and may you both have many more together. You both deserve it. Love the reunited photo, and holpe you will update us on how Chance is getting on. Sending Chance loads of kisses, and cuddles. Well done to all involved in reuniting Chance with his owner, who must be thrilled to bits, not to mention the "Magic of the microchip" This has made my day. Stay very close now Chance, and mkeep us posted okay? (((((HUGS)))))xxxxxxxxx

DO YOU NEED ANY OTHER REASON TO MICROCHIP? REUNITED AFTER 10 YEARS

Please read Chance's story. He ended up in Newport pound this week after being stolen 10 years ago. I cannot tell you how made up we are for Chance and his family. The post below was written by Chance's family:

“Our Chance is finally home !! This is Chance's story today 10/1/2014 I was due to be put to sleep !! When I was a little podge pup my owners took me to this horrible building where this nasty man stab a needle in my neck & stuck this cold thingy up my bum ouch it hurts, they never listen to me when I barked so I tried to bite the horrible man hehe. 3 years later I was happy settle in my lovely home, great big garden just for me oh how I loved my life & my owner Sion loved me just as much as I loved him.

I was nearly 3years old when I was taken from my place of safety my garden my home gone in seconds. My owners did ever thing they could to try & find me !! I was famous for a while because they put me in the papers & on the lost dog uk website, I no deep in my heart they did their best.

As the years went by I no they never gave up hope of finding me.

Then I became ill & the nasty people that took me just ignored me. I could barely walk & they still didn't help me. Instead they dumped me under a tunnel in the cold & wet. I was all alone scared & hungry, a few days later a big van pulled up & I was put in the back in a cage, I didn't mind because it was dry & warm, from there I was taken to coronation dogs kennels, the ladies were lovely they gave me food & a nice hot bath. They had a little machine which they waved around my neck ping a number came up.

A few days later they took me out of my nice warm bed back out in the cold, as I slowly walk down the path I herd someone say chance, I looked up & their he was my owner my Sion he found me at last I'm going home.

So all the years ago that nasty man as I thought was only helping me that needle in my neck is what helped me get home.

So please if you love your dog as much as my Sion loves me get them microchipped it does work just look at me I'm happy again because I'm finally home."
