Really pleased that Poppy's tummy has settled down and she's doing well. x
Catwoman
Fingers crossed that you will find your dog, Dingyfing. Never give up hope.
Poppy is doing well. She is eating properly, and no longer has a bad stomach.
dingyfing
Just read your story how inspiring my Dingo has gone missing and is a whippet x only bee 3 days and she has gone missing in Linc whilst we were on holiday but hav had to come back to Coventry without her. Your story has given me hope glad she is home safe and well

Not sure, I will ask Ken tomorrow, as he will be coming to my house. Thank you for all the offers to look after Poppy, that is very kind. Poppy is staying with a friend next week, as Ken has already booked to be away, and he thinks she needs peace and quiet for a while to recover.
Whippetlover
Great to see Poppy reunited with Ken. Is she starting to put weight on?
Berties Family
yay fantastic photo with Ken - wishing the little darling all the very best now - no more adventures now poppy, you could always fit in with my tribe if your dad is off on his hols x
Whippetlover
I understand that onions are bad for dogs, but I've no heard that garlic is. My whippets eat whole cloves of roasted garlic - no problem. Look forward to seeing the pics!!!
Catwoman
I have a really nice photo to add of poppy with Ken, but for some reason, I cannot upload it. I will try again tomorrow.
The vet who told Ken to avoid garlic with Whippets was German, and she said it could be fatal. Obviously not true if you all feed your dogs garlic! I think Poppy has been ill due to suddenly having good food, after probably eating total rubbish for 3 weeks. She is now on plain chicken and rice.

I hope I can add the pic. It is a nice one, so good photography Kim!!
Jill
So nice to read a happy ending, and refreshing to see how many good people there are! Welcome home Poppy x
Help for Hounds
I wouldn't have thought that garlic would have been a problem either as I feed garlic to my hounds and have done for years. All her stools while here were absolutely fine until the one she did when Ken was here (I was monitoring them), so it could well be excitement, bless her, or it could be that she managed to eat some of Tiny's biscuit mixer when she licked out her bowl for her on Sunday night ;0) I think she thought it would save on the washing up, as she made such a good job of it ;0)
Berties Family
hi catwoman - her upset tummy is probably due to stress or even excitement, re garlic - not sure why vet said that all my whips have garlic so I have no need to frontline them (keeps fleas away) Glad they have now been reunited - she sure is a special little lady and has touched many people on here - we all wish her all the best (and Ken of course :) )
Catwoman
Thanks Berties family. I will pass it on to Ken. I think Poppy had a bit of an upset tummy when she arrived home, not quite sure why. The vet told Ken to be careful with garlic and whippets.

Just spoken to Ken. Poppy has settled down wonderfully. By all accounts she acted like normal when she saw him. She is responding to all commands too. She was given some anti worming stuff, and some ointment for her pads. Poppy had been having five star treatment at Kim's house. She was beautifully clean and had, had her nails trimmed. Poppy is going to have a quiet few weeks now to get over her adventure. Ken views this page, even though i write on it, instead of him.

Kim, I will send you an email later. I was really pleased to see that the people who helped to look fro Poppy where able to see the beast themselves. I know that photos were taken today, so when I get to see them i will post some on here. It is always nice to see what happens next.

Ken, Dorothy and I cannot say thank you enough for finding Poppy. Best wishes to you all.

recipe for Satin balls - does not cause Diarrhea - 3lb of cheap mince, 4oz wheatgerm (health shop), 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, 3 eggs and shells, 2 pieces of gelatine, 1/2 cup of molasses (black treacle) pinch of salt, 1/2 box of cornflakes and garlic to flavour - mix together and then roll into balls - can be frozen, and dogs love it!

please pass to Ken - and it puts weight on within 1 week...and Poppy loves it lolLast edited: 2011-10-17 08:52:56 by Berties Family

I was lucky enough to be with Kim when we found poppy in the trap - omg such a feeling of euphoria.....by Kims face I thought the cat was in the cage again and it took a while for the sight of the little girl to register. I will be putting on a recipe if it could be passed to Ken please. Just sooooooooooo glad she is home xx

Wow Wee! Well what brilliant news to see Poppy has been found. So pleased for you all who have done a excellent job searching and finding her through sheer dedication. Welcome home sweet girl, lots of gentle cuddles, can't wait to read how it goes when she is reunited with Ken xxx Lets hope the other lost dogs mentioned are found safe soon xx
Help for Hounds
You'll all be very pleased to know that little Poppy has really come out of her shell tonight. She's had a bath and is living it up having 'snuggles' on the sofa with me. She's had visitors today (Littlebriton & Murph's Mum) they brought gifts of food for her (thank you), which she is just lapping up! She's an absolute poppet and she'd be very welcome to come back and stay anytime (ha ha that's if I let her go, she's just so gorgeous!!) Oh dear I could be converted from a 'Greyhound Lady' to a Whippet Lady' how lovely!!! ;0)
Catwoman
Looking on this site has become an addiction during the last three weeks. I think I may have withdrawal symptoms! However, if I hear of any lost dogs in my area, then perhaps I can help. As you can see from my name tag, I am a cat woman, so I am feeling for that feral cat. Wsa it actually feral or a stray? I am sure that many of you will feel a bit strange not spending your time traipsing around a land fill site. Let's hope that the other two dogs lost near your area are found. A bit disturbing to see another dog lost from kennels though. Surely kennels should have proper security regarding their dogs.
ClaireC
Hi All, now that one Poppy has been found can all the local people check up and lookout for another Poppy id 31602 (missing now for 12 weeks from kennels near Bierton and also a young puppy about 5 month Tracey id 33409 believed stolen from garden last Tuesday Stoke Mandeville area (possibly still in area!). Both these owners will be overjoyed and then I an certainly get a good nights sleep!. Thank you folks. Still so very pleased that this Poppy has now lost her title (from me of Queen of the Landfill). Bet the feral cat is missing her nice warm bed and food on tap though!
Alfieman
I have had such a busy weekend, not been able to post till now, but I am so overjoyed that Poppy has been found. I am also glad it was Kim who found her in the trap, since she has been absolutely tireless in her efforts to find Poppy. I am sure I would have burst into tears too!
I don't think I will know what to do with my spare time, now I don't feel compelled to traipse round a stinking landfill site!
But I have met some great people while searching for Poppy, and been so impressed with people's dedication to help get Poppy home to her owner.
Well done all!!

Wonderful to see Poppy safe. Well done all.

Fantastic news well done to you all for your time and dedication in catching Poppy. I was away last night and have just come home to be told the fantastic news by my daughter, as we have been on this site every day to follow the progress, and constantly looked out for Poppy when we were out walking our dog or driving around. I will now let everyone know at Calvert Green the wonderful news. Our best wishes to Poppy and Ken.

Thank you catwoman - lovely picture of Poppy & Kim (Fireside Friend) - she looks good for nearly a month on the run - well done everyone involved in her capture - I am sure there will be a few tears again tomorrow when Ken collects her - so pleased that they will be tears of joy now - As you say you now have new friends for life and looks like Poppy has a lovely place to go for her future holidays x
Catwoman
I have just added a photo of Poppy with the wonderful Kim. (Fireside Friend)Kim has a home boarding license and Ken and I are sure that Poppy will love her so much, that she probably won't want to leave!!!!I am sure that we have made a friend for life, and Ken now knows of an alternative to kennels. I hope to post a photo of Ken and Poppy when they are reunited on Monday. Ken intends to take Poppy straight to the vets for a check up, then home for rest. Poppy does look thin, but it is definately her. Hope that she is not too smelly Kim!!

Many thanks again to everyone involved in any way. The messages of goodwill and offers of help meant so much to us.

THANK YOU

OMG I'm absolutely chuffed to bits!!!! I couldn't believe it when I saw her in the trap, so much so I burst in to tears! Thank you everyone for the lovely comments, but this really was a team effort, I certainly didn't do it by myself and I'm thrilled to have been part of a team of such great people AND their gorgeous Whippets!!
I really couldn't wait to get her home and phone Ken with the good news!!!
The lovely Poppy is curled up asleep in a crate in my kitchen with a cosy quilt, she's eating and drinking well, but as you can imagine is extremely thin. On the whole she has come through her adventure unscathed. I'm still in shock I think, I'm just so glad she's safe indoors now.
She is staying with me for a couple of days as Ken has his grandchildren visiting and we thought it best for Poppy to stay somewhere quiet.
Angus we are collecting the trap tomorrow morning and will get it back to you as soon as x Well done team!!!! xxxLast edited: 2011-10-15 19:20:27 by Help for Hounds

Hi, not all kennels are bad I use a particular good one in Aston Clinton. Not sure if I am allowed to name you can always send me an email bprealization@btinternet.com of which I will gladly furnish their name/contact details. I've got the only dog that wants to break into there! She just loves it - far far far better than where she used to go. I was heartened to see that the kennels you used were also proactive in trying to catch her. Once again Happy Reunion.

POPPY HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!Thin, but ok. Massive thanks to Kim and all of you who have helped in any way to find her. Ken rang me in tears. Poppy was found in the trap. Kim (fireside Friend)is going to look after her until Monday. I will post a photo of her as soon as I get one.

Thank you, thank you! xxxxx

We will be in touch to return the trap. We certainly would not have got Poppy without this wonderful website and all who contribute to it.
BBKM
This is great to read, lets hope Poppy is safely with you at home very soon. I would hold back with the posters, don't let too many people know where she is as wrong people may jeopardize her being caught. Good luck, keeping everything crossed for you xx
kazzi1
Catwoman - I live at Calvert Green, and as mentioned in an earlier post have circulated Poppy's poster via email to everyone on our circulation list. Word is getting around and people are looking out for her I know, as I posted earlier, a friend rang me to say they thought they had spotted her, but alas it was not Poppy. Just a thought, I am not sure if you can do it with dogs, as you can with wild animals, but could a vet come out if there was a sighting, and dart her with a mild tranquiliser, so she could at least be caught a last resort maybe but just an idea? I am just concerned that the nights will soon be getting colder. Hoping that she is caught soon and reunited with Ken.
DogLostAngus
Good to see that you have had positive news by way of a positive sighting and that you know she has shelter and warmth in the barn. Please take a look at the story of KOKO Thai Royal Ridgeback who was reunited a coupe of years ago - she was known to be sleeping in a barn and was eventually captured by placing the trap in the barn and disguising it with hay bales - I am very excited by this news - ensure as few people as possible visit the barn to reduce the number of human scents that are introduced.

Koko's story here - makes tear jearking reading

Help for Hounds
Sorry it has taken me so long to post today, but I have some news. Poppy has been sighted again this afternoon and we now think we know where she is holding up at night? We now have 2 traps out and fingers crossed we can get her this weekend. The kennels brought the 2nd trap over and have placed it in the woods opposite the bridle path. While placing the trap they saw Poppy run out from a barn. Catwoman I would hold off with the leaflets as where she is there are NO houses except 2 farms who are both well aware of her presence (she was sighted at one to start with). Food is going to be placed in the barn where she's hiding and if it's taken, then one of the traps will be placed there.
I think if we all turn up there tomorrow it will only frighten her from her hidey hole, so my gut feeling is to leave it to the trap????
Berties Family I can still meet you for the trap goodies at 3pm, you've got my number.
Littlebriton the trap was sprung again when I got there at 5.15pm I replenished the food and water and changed the bedding (after the cat, phew!). I've been in contact with the kennels today and will phone again tomorrow to organise moving one of the traps. I'll keep you posted.
Catwoman
Hello everyone. Thank you for giving up your time to help find Poppy. Ken is unwell at the moment and although he would like to go out tomorrow to help with the search, he has been warned against it. I did not sleep well last night as i was trying to think of other strategies to reunite Poppy with Ken. I am going to ask the kennels if they will run a newspaper ad again, mentioning that we think she is in the Calvert area. I have also thought of a leaflet drop. I could make some small lost dog slips that could be delivered in the local area. Does anyone know how many houses are in the local area? Fireside Friend-could I use your phone number and Ken's number for sightings? I know that you are so much closer, and could get out quicker than Ken could.

I have also asked Ken to collect Poppy's bed from the kennels when he is feeling better. The only other idea that I had was thermal imaging, but then I cannot just summon a helicopter!

I cannot get to Oxford until the first week in November, so i am having to do my searching from afar. The weather will soon become an issue, and Poppy has been gone a long time now. Does anyone have any more ideas? Certainly if we can get our flyers ready for next week, then any volunteers to do some posting would be much appreciated.

I dreamt that Poppy was found this morning. I hope it is a good omen.

Thank you all again. You are superstars!
Littlebriton
Went to the far end of the landfill by the quarry between 2.30 and 4.30 this afternoon but no sign. The trouble is the weather was so nice and area is a real whippet suntrap. Reset the trap which had been sprung but nothing was in it. Cant do tomorrow but could do Sunday afternoon.
Berties Family
also available Saturday Afternoon to check area - would be available from 3pm
Kayelaine
I am able to help look for Poppy, Saturday afternoon or any time Sunday if it will help . Would need to know where and when. Let me know.
Help for Hounds
Alfieman and Littlebriton spent some time down the bottom of the land fill last night and reported that there is just far too much that Poppy could eat down there. The rabbits are in abundance and there are some great drainage tunnels that she could easily get in to for cover. Littlebriton and I were kindly taken last night to another entrance to the bottom of the land fill by a lady in Calvert, which we'll probably have a good search of on Saturday.
I'm not able to get down there this morning to check so if anyone is popping down could you please just check there is nothing in the trap (the guys on the site check it too and would phone if there was, so no panic).
Come on Poppy it's been 25 days now!Last edited: 2011-10-14 09:25:21 by Help for Hounds

is someone able to meet me either tomorrow after 4 or Saturday afternoon - I have some tempting food I would like to place leading to the trap. I think if we could all meet at some time so we can try and get another sighting as I am sure she will not go to the kennel people...
Kayelaine
So sorry to hear the news of Poppy. I keep Whippets and I live very close to Steeple Claydon and I am happy to help in any way I can. I know if it was one of my dogs I would be heartbroken. Please feel free to ring if I can help in any way. 07833947131

So sorry to have dashed your hopes this afternoon Ken with the potential sighting. My friend from Calvert Green rang me at work to say they thought they had found her scavaging around the bins. I did suggest to Ken that he also notified the Site Manager/Builders at the new homes building site just as you come in to Calvert Green off Brackley Lane as this is adjacent to the landfil and Poppy could possibly get into here. Just so important that as many people as possible are keeping an eye out for her, I will re-circulate the poster of her to all at Calvert Green to alert them she is still missing in this area. Ken asked me where the new incinerator is to be built and this is at the back of the landfill, she could be there and you would get to this by going towards Edgcott from Calvert, just as you come down Perry Hill there is a left turn for Shipton Lee, take this and as you drive along you will see the back of the landfill, - certainly worth a look.
Help for Hounds
Caught the same cat in the trap this morning :0) Spoke at length with the guys at the site office and a lady from my village who works there. Trap is now located where she has been seen regularly. I was alerted to a possible sighting in Calvert Green, but after investigating it wasn't her. I have also walked the length of the bridle path this afternoon with my dog, but no sign.
Catwoman
Nothing new to report. I believe that Ken has gone again this afternoon to look for Poppy. Let's just hope that she gives up wanting to be a runaway!
Alfieman
Kim- I think the footprints could possibly be Fred's- we were up there this afternoon at about 4pm and he ran across the pipes at one point! Sorry!
I did meet Ken up there, and walked along the bridleway with him. Apparently, Poppy was seen again this afternoon by a site worker, at the far end of the landfill, but no sign of her when we walked down that way.
Hope for some more positive news soon...
Help for Hounds
Still nothing tonight! I have moved the trap closer to the brick building as I hadn't realised that there is a huge gap in the fence there, with what look like paw prints going across the pipes. Which my very clever dog found for me tonight! The trap is very visible from the bridle path, but I can always move it back in the morning out of sight of passers by?
Berties Family
hi unable to come over today but if she is still not caught tomorrow - I will drop some food (Satin balls with garlic) for you to put in the trap Kim. I also have some marrow bones which could also go into it....if you manage to catch her though today please let me know....
Help for Hounds
Nothing in the trap this morning. I walked my Greyhound right along the bridle path this morning and she scented all the way down (she only scents over other dogs) so it's possible that Poppy is spending quite a bit of time there (unfortunately just when we aren't)! I spoke to a lady this morning who works with the lady who saw he yesterday...apparently she got within inches of Poppy before she bolted. This was around 2pm. She definitely preferes to be out in the afternoon. So fingers crossed for Ken today.
minigirl
good luck~ sending lots of positive vibes xx
Catwoman
No joy tonight. Hopefully she will be a good dog and climb into the cage. Ken is going to go tomorrow in the afternoon, as that is her favourite time it seems to be out and about. Possibly as it would be her usual walk time. Ken's jumper is in postition. Perhaps the food in the land fill is better than what is being left? !

I will report back any news if I get any.
ClaireC
Come on girl, you don't want to stay "Queen of the Landfill" any longer you know you don't!

Come on Poppy - go and say hello to your dad, he's desperate for a whippetty cuddle x

Good luck Ken and Kim!!
Catwoman
New information this afternoon. Poppy has been spotted again at the land fill site. I believe that her hiding place may have been found. The lady from the kennels tried to get close but had no luck. I understand that Ken is on his way or there already now with Fireside Friend. Hopefully Poppy is still in the area and will hear Ken calling her. The trap is going to be moved to where she is sleeping. Ken has a jumper that he has slept in to leave out. Hopefully this is the day when she finally gets her owner back. She is such a timid dog that it is unlikely that anyone else will be able to catch her whilst she is out and about, other than Ken. She does respond to 'stop' though, or at least she has when I have walked her.

The trap has been reguarly checked by Fireside friend and other friends who have been helping out. Thank you so much everyone. I think we can ascertain that she is living in the same area near the land fill, and we will only get her back when she is either trapped or goes to her owner.

I know that Ken will ring me later with an update. When I hear, then I will post.
Help for Hounds
NOthing in the trap this morning. Put fresh tripe and water in and i'll check again tonight.
kazzi1
I am a resident at Calvert Green the estate adjoining the landfill. I am not sure that all residents are aware of Poppy missing, apart from a notice on the board outside the village hall. I have just asked the Community Association to email Poppy's lost poster to all residents on the mailing list this will cover dog walkers and residents driving around the area. My daughter and I did walk our dog along the route yesterday lunchtime calling Poppy's name and looking out for her, but as the shoot was on she would have been in hiding, so unfortunately we did not see her. Keeping our fingers crossed that her owner is re-united with Poppy as soon as possible. Last edited: 2011-10-10 08:14:12 by kazzi1
Gillian
Thank you. It's good to have it explained! I should have known Dog Lost would have it all covered :o)

Hope all these lost whippets are back where they belong soon!
DogLostAngus
Thanks Gillian - It depends on the land owner where the trap is situated, in most cases trap cannot be left on public land and we normally advise putting on private property as in the case of the Clayshoot Land -UK law states that the traps must be checked at least once per day - we have recommended a shorter schedule of checks here - there are a number of regulations which have to be adhered to and these have all been covered - In Zaks case he is being sighted on Parks Land and the Park keepers are within their rights to request that the trap is manned at all times if they allow permission for it to be positioned on their property.Last edited: 2011-10-09 23:44:44 by Angus
Gillian
I was just reading on Zak whippet's page that it is illegal to leave a trap unmanned in case wildlife gets trapped in it, and indeed the dog for whom it was intended gets stressed at being locked up. I don't know if this is true or not but though I ought to pass on the information just in case.

I do hope you have some luck capturing Poppy soon and she's back with her owner where she belongs xLast edited: 2011-10-09 23:07:13 by Gillian
Help for Hounds
no luck again tonight, better luck tomorrow.
Berties Family - satin balls are a great idea!
Littlebriton
We went up to the site until about 1630hrs. The trap hadnt been sprung and there was no sightings of her. The trip was covered in blow flies so I covered it over with biscuit, so it can still be smelt but wont be so fly blown. We went right up to the top of the hill on the actual landfill to the new rubbish area. Had a long talk to the Clayshoot owner. He said that he often finds bone son his field which are fetched over by the foxes or the Red KitesLast edited: 2011-10-09 18:58:21 by Littlebriton
Berties Family
Fireside friends - if you need something else tempting - the satin balls with garlic would be a good idea - I have all the ingredients if you would like me to make a batch - it is a good high energy food too, let me know if you would like some delivered over for the trap
Help for Hounds
Completely agree about the food, but she needs to know that her 'new' food source is on the 'trap' side of the track not in the land fill where she has been foraging for 2 weeks.....even tripe can't compete with the smell of that place!!! Catwoman, great idea of the item of clothing. The only thing I have of hers is a beige fleece blanket that I picked up from the kennels with the trap.
Briborg
Just to say, been following your progress every day, what a team!!!! my thoughts and best wishes are with you all,Haste ye return Poppy.
Love from Scotland xxxx
Catwoman
Just spoken to Ken. He did not leave any fish out, so maybe the bones have come from the waste tip. He will ring you tomorrow Fireside Friend, so he can arrange to come out with you. He will bring some clothing too, to go into the trap.

Thank you.
Catwoman
Really great to hear about everything. I will report back to Ken this afternoon. At least the cat got fed!! I agree with Angus, if poppy can take her pick of food then she won't go in the trap. Is her red tartan bed in it? Just wondering if it might be beneficial for Ken to leave an item of his old clothing that he has worn recently in the trap to encourage her in? Is that a good idea? If so, I will tell him to start wearing sometthing when he gets home tonight, ready to go into the cage.

Ken wants me to pass his most sincere thanks to everyone who is helping to catch Poppy.
DogLostAngus
Well at least we know that the trap is working fully and sensitive to a small body weight - lets hope that Poppy gets there first now before the cat x
Help for Hounds
Trap checked this morning. No Poppy only a very full bellied feral cat. Trap reset and baited. Will check again after dark tonight. No point in going sooner as she will probably stay clear while they are shooting today.
DogLostAngus
Its important now to make the trap the primary place that food is left - she needs to be hungry to go into the trap so try to ensure that only little morsels are left elsewhere possibly with a light trial laid towards the trap and the main 'prize'.
Help for Hounds
My husband Paul and I went down about 7.30 this evening. The trap was empty and unsprung, so no luck there so far. We have moved the trap in to the trees out on the trackside, just out of the field as they are clay shooting there tomorrow.
Bryan, the food that you left in the bowl next to the caravan has gone! It was definitely there when I left at around 3 today, so I've put a bit of tripe in there. Paul and I had another walk over the track to the landfill and back again, but no sign. I'll check the trap again in the morning and keep you posted.Last edited: 2011-10-08 21:49:19 by Help for Hounds
Alfieman
Kim and I placed the cage this afternoon, along the field border where she was last seen. We also checked out the hay bales- they are covered with a tarpaulin 'roof' and will give a very warm dry shelter. We had a couple of small but maybe important finds today- or rather my Whippet Mabel found them for us. We found a dog poo- definitely dog, not fox, and quite fresh- on the 'track' alongside the field edge where she was spotted, and we found some chewed bones there too. Also found some chewed fish bones (I think Ken had left fish for her) next to the hay bales. I suppose a fox could have eaten the fish, but would have thought a fox would have taken it off into cover, not eaten it in the open?
So it really looks like she is moving around in a small area- sheltering in the hay at night, making her way along the edge of the field to cross the tracks and scavenging on the landfill site in the afternoons, when she has been spotted the last couple of times.
Kim is going to check the trap tonight- hope there may be a good result soon...
DogLostAngus
Ken has been doing some scenting in the area as well as dragging the fishy stockings, so yes keep doing all these things - we also learnt from last winters lost dogs during the artic conditions that the colder the weather was the less we saw the dogs during daylight as they were sleeping in the warmest part of the day and moving to keep warm at night. It sounds like she has a plentiful food source from the landfill site and small animals which she will be adept at catching - the land fill will also give off heat through the ground so this will help to keep her warm if she has not found away into the hay that was mentioned in an earlier post. Keeping everything crossed, good luck with the trap and if any help is needed just let me know.
Berties Family
ok so no searching today. I am also available tomorrow and would like to walk the bridle path...Angus do you think it would be a good idea to scent??????
Gillian
Good luck to you all - hope Poppy is back with Ken very soon xxx
Catwoman
That sounds a good idea. Thanks for taking the time to move the trap for us. Ken told me this morning that poppy has only ever owrn a coat when it has been snowing or very, very cold, so she may be finding the weather bearable. I also forgot to say that her usual routine involves sleeping all morning, a walk in the afternoon, and then sleeping again. This may be why she is sighted in the afternoon, as she may be sleeping for the rest of the time.

Let us hope that she wants to get into her bed in the trap. The kennels will supply food.
Help for Hounds
I think we are better off just placing the trap today and see where we go from here. As Angus said, now that we know where she is, we don't want to be scaring her off again. We'll get the trap set up this afternoon and hopefully we'll have our girl very soon? ;0)
Berties Family
i am available this afternoon, phone number is further down page, please call if we can meet about 3.30 (flu jab at 2.45)
Catwoman
Thank you for leaving food. X
Catwoman
I think the trap will be left and checked. Next week if she has not turned up, then Ken is going to meet up with some of the wonderful people that have been searching for her, and they plan to sit quietly in the area that she was seen today. We certainly do not want to scare her off. There will be clay shooting on Sunday, Ken says that she is not scared by bangs, but there may be more people about. I just hope that she nips into the trap tomorrow afternoon. Then the nightmare will be over.
Bryanm44
Searched the shooting area tonight lots of hay and cover to shelter, left some food I took with me at the caravan in the bowl hope she is found soon.
Bryan & molly
DogLostAngus
I think you want to try the trap first - re the search team - I would not try to get too many unknown people into the area as you may spook her out to somewhere that is not as safe and then have to start all over again with locating her
Catwoman
The kennels said that they used a tracking dog close to when they lost her, but it did not pick up her scent. Ken also tried to contact a search team but did not get a response. At least we know that she is still alive and was looking in good health today. Hopefully the trap will catch her.
Catwoman
Great news that she has been spotted again. Ken was there for a long time today dragging fish and moving his car about in the hope that Poppy might appear. Fireside Friends will collect the dog trap tomorrow from the kennels and place in the area where she thinks Poppy might be sleeping at night, which is close to where she was seen today.
Massive thanks again. I have just told Ken the news and he is very excited that we might finally catch her.

Fingers crossed.

Is there a tracking dog in this area that could be used to track Poppy's scent?
DogLostAngus
come on Poppy your Dad is missing you so much

Came indoors too late to see your message F Friends but if you have no luck, could join up with Alfieman tomorrow?

There's a cosy little hay store at the shooting area, plus a dog bowl of water, I did have a quick look, but it might be worth looking at again in case she's made a nest out of sight now there's some evidence she's active in this area. Good luck.Last edited: 2011-10-07 17:52:44 by ElizabethM
Help for Hounds
I've just this minute had a call from a guy in Calvery ( I left my number on the posters) to say he has just seen her crossing from the landfill to the clayshooting area and then back over to land fill. He had she doesn't look too bad. I'm off over there now if anyone can jon me 07747 011990.
Catwoman
Thanks Alfie man for all your detective work. Please don't go out in the dark on your own though in the middle of nowhere.
The kennels will set their trap at the top end of their property. They will move it next week if we have no luck. Ken was going to drag fish about this morning. I am guessing that he may still be out there as I have not heard anything. I will update when I have any news.
DogLostAngus
Lots of great work going on here - please be careful about being in isolated areas alone after dark - try and always stay in pairs. My trap is being collected in the morning so that it is ready to deploy easily. If it is pouring with rain you would be very unlikely to see her as they will find shelter before the rain comes. Ensure that you pay extra attention to bottoms of hedgerow and under any heavy foliage as these are common places for 'nesting' - look for tell tail signs of circling on flattened grass and keep an eye out for any paw prints in soft mud that do not appear to have a human in close proximity.
Alfieman
Have just come back from there after driving round the nearby housing estate, I also pulled into all the gateways along the road and shone a torch across the fields and along the railway track and called her name. I went a little way into the bridlepath but chickened out as it was very dark and my torch wasn't quite as high powered as I had thought! I gave up eventually as it started to pour with rain and I thought she would probably be sheltering somewhere. The area is just so huge, with so many places to hide- just hope she eventually decides that approaching someone is a better option than continuing to hide...
I am unable to help search tomorrow, but am free on Saturday, if anyone wants to arrange to meet up?
Help for Hounds
I've put posters around dog walking areas from Steeple side of the Calvert bridge, back to Botolph Claydon, also done the dog walking areas over the fields near the kennels in Steeple Claydon. Spoke to quite a few 'doggie' people who walk the disused part of the railway track and they are all going to keep a look out for her. I'll put posters up in the pubs tomorrow at some point if someone could do the Anglers car park and maybe the trees in the wood further down where people walk their dogs and horse riders use?
Weather is cold and windy here, it did rain a bit last night, but so far it's been dry today.
Catwoman
I shall ask Ken to get a poster out to the places that you mentioned. Thank you for dragging fish about Elizabeth. Just hope the weather there is not like the weather that we have here in Cheshire at the moment-heavy rain and wind.
ElizabethM
Another place for a poster is the notice board in the car park for the Calvert Anglers Club not far from the green gate on the main road, there were a couple of chaps there today but imagine it might be busier on the weekend. Lots of dirt (motor)bike tracks over the lakes/scrub area west of the village, imagine the noise from these might scare her off if it's a regular activity.
DogLostAngus
Have spoken to owner this afternoon and he has my contact info so that the trap can be collected and in place in advance so to speak, we discussed the merits of the sardines/pilchards and hot garlic chicken for baiting the trap - the main key is going to be getting the placement correct. keep going with those posters into the pub etc, find out if there are any ramblers or mountain bike clubs locally who may have meets going over the weekend as they could have eyes in the right places
ElizabethM
We went over this morning, no sign of her sadly.

We went along the railway sidings as far as we could and then around the coppice and clay pigeon shoot area to the east of the landfill site. We also went all around the scrubby area with small lakes to the west of the village. We dragged a fishy lure all the way in both areas, in the hope it might draw her out of cover and towards the open path areas at some point.

We also called in at the pub at Steeple Claydon; the landlady was helpful but hadn't heard a dog was missing, so if someone could perhaps take a poster there it might help as it's virtually the only place where locals might congregate in the area.Last edited: 2011-10-06 18:42:18 by ElizabethM

If you google Calvert Landfill it comes up with a map of the site..the site runs NW to SE
She was seen at the NW end near where the site entrance and offices are and just S of Calvert Green
The railway is little used and then for slow moving traffic for the landfill and runs along the NW/SE boundary with the open land and a few woods immediately to the NE of the bridleway that itself follows the railway on the landfill side of it.
Just adding some of an email that I received from Poppy's owner. Thought it might be helpful.
Help for Hounds
Moonlake- only just picked this up sorry. I found a public foot path while out there this morning so will head back over there in a bit. My number is in a post further back if you want to meet up?

Poppy was seen at Knowl farm some where near Mile Road, but I believe that this was before the land fill sighting. The kennels report that her bedding had moved from outside their kennels last night, so could show that she had been back. I am trying to organise a dog trap, hopefully to be put on the land fill site which will be checked by the kennel staff. If this goes ahead and we can set this up tomorrow, then I will ask Ken to ring interested parties if he is able to get to the area, then perhaps a proper search can begin.
Many thanks again.

PS I understood that Poppy had been reported to the police. I have contacted many dog wardens in different areas and various missing animal sites etc.
Berties Family
re-called the dog warden and sadly no sightings etc, reflecting back from yesterday - although the disadvantage is being so many fields making sightings hard, the good thing is she can keep away from roads etc. does anyone know of local farms who have horses and pass info to those that use the bridle way, I think these are most likely for sightings
Moonlake
If you are planning to go at 4.30 today, tell me where to go and I'll join in. If it's thought she is near a bridge, would that be a starting point? I realise that by now she will be feral so in essence we would be looking for an animal that doesn't want to be found but I'm certainly willing to try.
Help for Hounds
The pronlem is Gay, is that we just don't know 'where' to look? I live literally 2 mins away and have been down there again this morning with some food searching for over an hour, and nothing. The area is so vast, unless we can get another sighting of her to pinpoint her we are all just wandering around the countryside! We have to go mainly at around 4.30pm that is when the railway line closes down, we have more chance of her coming out while the line is quiet and we can access the line without being turfed out by the watchman. Because it's so rural she's managed to lay low without being sighted for so long, but it doesn't help us in our search :0(
Moonlake
I have offered to go and look but do not know the area and no one seems to be co-ordinating the search. My mobile is 07808 280868 and I could go over there (about an hour away) today if someone has a plan. Gay

Meant to say if the cage gets stolen it is not the end of the world
Littlebriton
I have an old wire cage that I was going to put down by the railway bridge (she was seen at the heading to the bridge by the site workers so may be part of her route) It wont contain her as such as it isnt a trap but it may give her somewhere to go if I put bedding in and cover it with a waterproof cover. I can put water in and some food. I walked for about 2 hours tonight with my whippet the landfill side of the bridge. I have put up notices in waterproof covers so should survive the weather. Also spoke to some of the locals.I think the biggest problem is that not a lot of people know she is missing and may have seen her but reported it. I have people who have come forward offering to come look but I am unsure where to direct them to or how to get onto the land to the right of the bridge coming into Calvert from Steeple Claydon
Berties Family
unfortunatly no sightings by us - although we did get approached by the police and the officer was not aware of a missing dog - surely Poppy going missing should have been reported by the kennels out of courtesy! i am unable to help now until the weekend, hopefully my whippet may of scented the area - whippets always know their own type. can someone let us know the farm where she was last spotted please
Help for Hounds
We still need to know what farm it was and I can get on to it tomorrow.
DogLostAngus
This trap should be fine as they have to bend a little to go in - I also have camouflage netting to disguise it
Catwoman
We think Poppy is about 15" to the shoulder, if that.
Catwoman
Thanks Angus. I will let Ken know.
Catwoman
I have just found that you can buy dog traps. I wonder if that would work?
DogLostAngus
a couple of suggestions that you may like to try - if you are walking you can try dragging an old stocking stuffed with pilchards / sardines behind you, talk gently to yourself as you go, she may follow the scent - if you see her keep her in pheripal vision and gently go to the floor - keep talking and wind in your pilchards - it may take a while but could be worth a try. HOw tall is she to the shoulder ? I have a medium sized trap in Milton Keynes which is available if you need it, my number 07515 884 675. The best place for this would be the farm where she was seen as she is most likely sleeping there somewhere and the farmer may assist with checking the trap for you.
Help for Hounds
Have been out searching with Berties family from 3.30 -7pm no sign of her. Had to call it a day as we were losing light. Anyone know the name of the farm she was at?
Catwoman
Wow, you have all been so busy. many, many thanks. Ken, (poppy's owner)walked around the area yesterdat, but had no luck. Apparently she was almost caught at a nearby farm on Sunday, but a dog barking scared her away. She may also be limping. Ken has conatcted the dog warden and the RSPCA to see if there might be a way of leaving a trap. I have suggested that we may try to talk to the people at the dump to see if we could leave food and her bed in a place close to where they work, in the hope of catching her. Unfortunately Ken does not live nearby so nipping across is difficult. His mobile number is 07976 911386.

Does anyone have any suggestions that could help? We are all concerned that the weather is due to get worse, and she does feel the cold.

Again, and Ken would second this, a massive THANK YOU for your help. Ken has had Poppy from a tiny pup and she is a very special little dog.

Walked the bridle path running alongside landfill site at Calvert along the length of the railway line. Also walked around the fishing lake and land around Calvert Green. Have asked local dog walkers to look out for her. Will have another look for her this evening. Fireside Friends - can you let me know the route you think she may have taken so I can help cover it?

Really hope you find her soon. It's awful when any dog goes missing but hate to see the older ones lost. Good luck with your searching x

Poppy certainly seems to have establised a patch. We just need to get that break of being in the right place at the right time now.

I live in Calvert Green, about to go looking now - will walk along landfill site/railway line and adjoining land around Calvert Green. Happy to help late afternoon too.
Help for Hounds
There is a huge lake just up from there along the track. I will start from the Steeple end and work my way up back to Calvert this afternoon. I think I know which route she has taken from the kennels so I will follow that.
DogLostAngus
Thank goodness she has been sighted - have a look at google earth for the area and see where the closest water sources are to the sighting - lets see if we can work out her 'patch'
Alfieman
According to the foreman on site, she went up the line towards Steeple Claydon, so to the left if you start from the site office. We walked along the line for a while in that direction, but the dogs weren't keen on walking too far on the rocky ground.
Help for Hounds
I spent about 3 hours searching for her this evening. I checked down the disused line at Steeple Claydon, walked the bridle path up and around the landfill and checked the railway line as far as Quainton, but no sign. Maybe an idea to check on the line again tomorrow. Do we know which direction on the track she went????
Berties Family - you are more than welcome to join me search the line, if you have any binoculars handy bring them along as we are not allowed on the actual line itself.Last edited: 2011-10-04 22:13:32 by Help for Hounds

I am still available tomorrow afternoon if required to come over - don't know the area so if there is anyone available to show me best place to look it would be much appreciated
Littlebriton
Alfieman and I went out for a couple of hours this evening and walked the bridleway and the railway that runs along the edge of the landfill. She was seen yesterday walking along the track. It appears that the trains that use the track are very few and very slow which is a good thing. There is a housing estate adjacent to the landfill which could do with a leaflet drop. We spoke to a dog walker a security guard and a site worker.
Fireside friends walked on the actual landfill. Perhaps the scent of her owner being there today will keep her locked to this area for a while longer.

Sorry cant get up to the site any earlier than 4.30. The guys at the site are aware Poppy is being looked for but have said that no one is allowed on the site to look. Which is why we are also going at that time as it shuts then so no on will be about :-)
I have a whippet but mainly I have Italian Greyhounds but was too far away to help look for Little Blue so felt that it was only right I help look for Poppy to return the favour to all those people who turned out for little Blue

Thank you all for your help. Poppy's owner is about to leave his house to head to the landfill site. Fantastic news. Everyone is very excited. Hi will meet you at 5pm at the Church. It would certainly help of there was more info or even one sighting to go on. I will print off some more posters.
Help for Hounds
Is there any info on how she escaped and in what direction she took off, it may help to start there? The land in which the dogs are walked at the kennels belongs to the kennel and although it says a mile walk, it is infact around the perimeter of a field. Although fenced the gateways are open which leads to the road? There are also plenty of lakes in the area for water, but again it depends on which direction she took off in? If there is any more info please let me know.Last edited: 2011-10-04 08:56:35 by Help for Hounds

if you get any sightings - I am off work tomorrow afternoon and could come over with whippets
Help for Hounds
I know the area pretty well, but it is a vast rural area. I have a small Greyhound (more Whippet size) so I will start looking after work this afternoon about 3ish with her.
Littlebritton & Alfieman, if you would like to meet up this evening I can meet you outside the church at 5pm (there is some parking there)? Even if we can just get a sighting of this girl, to know that she is ok and still in the area would be a bonus!!
Alfieman
I have asked my friend, who is a mobile hairdresser around that area, to ask her customers to look out for Poppy. My dog training class is at Finmere, not far away from Steeple Claydon, and I have asked the trainers there to do the same. I am going training there tomorrow with Fred, and am happy to go over to the area afterwards with him and see if she may approach another Whippet if she is still around. Would rather meet up with someone though, as I don't know the area very well...
Littlebriton
As there has been no sightings of her she may be holed up in the daytime or she has been picked up and taken out of the area. The trouble is the timescale now that she has been missing. Fireside could possibly meet about 5pm tomorrow evening
Help for Hounds
I had no idea she was missing? I live in Steeple Claydon and haven't seen any posters around while walking the dogs. I will change my route tomorrow and keep a keen eye out for her.
If there is anyone local to me/Steeple Claydon who fancies getting together to do a search.....let me know.
I have printed some posters off and will post them around the village shops.Last edited: 2011-10-03 20:38:53 by Help for Hounds

Okay I have dropped posters off to the vets and at Pets at home Bicester. Checked out the A41 which was a deer that had been hit. I will try to get over to the Hunt Kennels, they cover the area around Steeple Claydon and will drop a notice in to friends who are Gamekeepers between Bicester and Oxford. As everyone has said it is very very rural and there is plenty of rabbits about at the moment

Do you know if any posters have been put in Bicester at the vets, would be happy to do that.

No news or sightings yet of Poppy. She cannot have just vanished into thin air. Her owner has been told by a local farmer near the area that she escaped in, that there is a disused railway line that runs east/west from Steeple Claydon and that lost animals often turn up there as there is wildlife to hunt and places to hide etc. Her owner is going to try to walk along some of it next week. He has been out banging her food bowl, but no response so far. It is a massive area to check though as it is very rural.

Thanks for putting Poppy on the list to go in the magazine. If we get any news, than I will post on here as soon as I hear. Thank you.

I've put Poppy on the list for the Countryman's Weekly and will get her advertised as soon as possible.

Is there any news on Poppy? Is the owner getting lots of posters up?

Just spoken to the kennels. They have offered a reward and have put a notice in the local papers and the surrounding areas. If only they had told us..

Many thanks everyone. It is a massive area and I live in Cheshire, so i am trying to organise things from here. I am going to try ringing all the local vets, just in case she has turned up. She is a very sweet and quiet dog. I will pass the comments onto her owner, he will be thrilled at the concern showed. Thanks.
Berties Family
areas to hit are Calvert, Charndon, Twyford, Middle claydon, Addington, hillsden, Verney Junction, Padbury and Adstock, possibly Bicesterdue to the amount of visitors. Anyone on here local to these areas - once postered we wil need to wait for sightings, please tell the owner that she is a whippet and they are clever enough to get food and water - foxes will not try to eat one, but possibly the other way round....

Hi, seen this on the kennels website....''Uniquely, the dogs are walked three times a day along mown walkways that meander through trees within an area of 11 acres, the longest walk is just over half a mile through an unspoilt landscape'' - that is a huge area to try to search on your own - can someone hit local villages?

Two other whippets - Dana (ID 31884) and Zak (ID 31996) - went missing 6 weeks ago and there have been regular sightings but also long periods of them laying low. I doubt very much that a fox would have killed Poppy. I do hope Poppy's owner can stay positive and gets lots of posters distributed.

Rosehill Farm Kennels in Steeple Claydon. I am hoping to get an advert in the local papers that cover that area. She cannot have just vanished into thin air. Her owner thinks she may have been killed by a fox, but i don't think a fox would take on a whippet. Very disappointed by the kennels response to the loss. If i ran a kennels, and had lost a dog that was staying with me, then I would try every avenue to try to reunite the dog and owner, and contact the owner for a progress report. Not a great advert for business.
ClaireC
Do let us all know whch kennels and then we can search nearer the area of the kennels please.

I have just found out that Poppy has a scar on her right rear hip after being bitten. She is also white with brindle and ginger brown patches of colour. Her owner has called her today in the area, but no joy yet. Only hope is that she is capable of hunting, so may have eaten, and may still be near by.

Hi all. Poppy's owner has returned from abroad this afternoon, and I believe he has gone to look for her in the area in which she was lost. Fingers crossed that she will turn up, as she is a very timid dog, but is well trained and responds well to her owner. However, she is also old and she has now been out in the cold at night for a week.
Jo
I have linked your Poppy to our Poppy's page (31602). I am the person that called you about calling her in your normal voice that she had heard before not a 'new' loud voice that could scare her. If I can help in any way please let me know. Hopefully she will be home soon - Good Luck.
