A photograph of Jack has been posted on the Doglost website.
The site was created eight years ago to help owners trace lost or stolen dogs.
Shereen Lloyd, one of the site's co-ordinators, said the theft of dogs, particularly working dogs such as terriers, was a growing problem.
She said: "We've definitely seen a growing number of dog thefts in the past two or three years. Roughly 30 dogs are placed on the website every day and I'd say possibly a third of those have been stolen.
"Working dogs seem to be very popular, but toy dogs like Chihuahuas are also being stolen.
"Thieves tend to move the dogs on quickly and may only get a few pounds for them. Sometimes they steal them to order, depending on the breed.
"Owners are often distraught to lose their pets and the dogs have feelings too and suffer distress when they are taken from their homes."
A Leicestershire police spokeswoman said officers were investigating the theft and urged anyone with information to contact the force on the non-emergency number 101.

- Poor Poor Jack - he must be SO confused as to who he belongs to and where he belongs.....Well done with such tenacity Ross! and lets not forget the scum-bags father - who after all returned Jack. I'd like to think he's a decent chap who didn't agree with what his scum-bag son had done! Bottom line - Jack hopefully will now have a happy life with Ross. How about getting Jack's belly tattood Ross? More like a heat stamp than a tattoo, but shows up and puts theives off if they see a number branded on dogs bellies.

- Jacks owner has just rang me with the great news that he has now got the little lad safely back! Poster power and publicity really works, the father of the young man who stole Jack has returned him. Jacks owner wants to thank everyone involved and wishes to make a donation to DogLost. - Jacks owner has now given a statement to the police. He has an interview with the Leicester Mercury and they want to take a photo of him putting a poster up, this should be in tomorrows edition. Hope all this publicity will make Jack "too hot to handle" and he is safely returned soon.

- Ross I have sent you a further email regarding the necessity to find the microchip company so they can be alerted because if someone buys him innocently and takes him to a vet the details will not flag up as stolen.

- Have spoken to owner. Jack was stolen from his van. He has alerted police and got a CRN and I have advised him to poster everywhere to make him "too hot to handle". Am forwarding him advice sheets and contact numbers.
Jack was only purchased the day before so owner is having to contact original owner for a photo to put on and also his microchip details have not been altered. - 2012-01-09 08:29 B30
