- Dreadful, absolutely dreadful! All decent dog wardens, vets, etc should know to check the whole body - emphasis on decent. As far as I'm aware, there are little (bordering on nil) animal welfare laws in Ireland. Too many bad stories coming from that way. God Bless sweet Axel and his loving owners. This must be so hard to come to terms with, maybe they never will. I wish them peace in the knowledge Axel is now safe waiting for them, for a time, and they will never be parted again. x

- I really feel for the owners of Axel but I had to have my two cent. Sometimes dog wardens only scan the neck area. Chips are known to travel around the body and one has even been reported in a dogs back thigh. I know exactly where my dogs chips are and out of 3, 2 are not in the neck region. RIP dear axel xx

- How sad. Poor Axel. Whatever his age or his condition and whether the option was kinder, he was not even being allowed the right to be with the people who loved him at the end despite being microchipped and tagged. Still, given that's the same authority that has kept an innocent dog locked up on death row for years, it really doesn't surprise me. RIP Axel.

- Totally agree - it's outrageous that the owners were not contacted.
So very, very sorry to hear about Axel - RIP beautiful boy xx - 2012-05-19 23:37 Steph HDC AWO
- What are the stray laws in Ireland? Here in England dog wardens have a duty to deal with stray dogs under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Where strays are found we are bound by law to contact a known owner. i.e. if the dog is microchipped we will try the phone number, if no joy we must visit and/or write to the address on the microchip informing the owner they have seven days to claim their dog. Is it not the same in Ireland?

- lesleyjane. You are right, his owners should have been contacted first, via his microchip. I also think some action should be taken to prevent this kind of thing happening again. RIP Axel

- I too agree, this is totally heartless and was completely unnecessary. I am so very sorry that this has happened, and my thoughts are with the family at this time. Run free at the bridge, lovely Axel xx

- Outrageous, poor owners, why didn't the vet/authorities contact them?? Agree with the previous comment, hope action is taken. xx

- What is going on? Yet another chipped pet put to sleep instead of contacting the owners. By the date on the letter Axel must have been picked up the day he went missing. Are they going to start doing this to our human children too? Find a lost child, can't be bothered to ring the parents and just put them to sleep - there's too many in children's homes afterall?. If the vet thought his health was that bad, why wait two weeks to Murder him! Unbelievable. My heart goes out to Axel and his famly. I hope they take this further. X

- Feel sad that Axel has gone to the bridge, but it sounds like it wasd a Blessing for him. He was loved and well cared for, but now he is back to full health and like a young puppy again playing with his pals in the warm sunshine. When the time is right, his family will be reunited once again with their boy, never to be parted again: you have not lost him forever. Night, night Axel, sleep tight. RIP+++ Sending healing prayers and loads of comforting hugs to his family; will light a candle for you all including Axel at Church tomorrow and say prayers too. God Blessx
