Still no recent sightings of Bernie.
Lee is doing a great job from a distance away and local helpers are reaching out and postering and searching.
Lee is ringing kennels daily, has contacted dog wardens in local areas and surrounding boundary areas, mailed local farmers, vets, boarding kennels. The local community police have also been informed.
She has managed to secure an appeal article with the Ilkley Gazette and local Wharfedale newspaper- will update when we know day will appear.
Planning more searching at the weekend. Very rural area with many places this boy could be bedding down.
Working on a timeline map of places he has been spotted.

Understandable if she didn't give you the exact day, but an idea would have been enough - I'm working full-time and trying to find Bernie as well, it would help a lot if us volunteers got all of the information.
LovesSpringers
The lady I spoke to couldn't remember which day. I did ask her. She said that she'd seen him on West Lane, Askwith. Will make sure I explain clearly next time.
sarahsarah
We need to know the day Bernie was sighted, not just the place - a sighting that was a week ago might be completely irrelevant by now. Because we're in Ilkley, every time someone posts with a sighting, we go out and look - straight away. In posting there's been a sighting in Askwith, we went out straight away tonight after work to look there to catch the moment only to find out that this sighting was last week! Please be more specific or we can't help you.

Sighting of Bernie going towards Askwith, North Yorkshire LS21
in Askwith, Harrogate District, North Yorkshire, lady who saw him tried to report it to harrogate dog warden, but they never called her back. He was running quite fast. I've asked the lady to confirm the street name again.

sighting of Bernie last week in different area- Askwith.Trying to ascertain the day.Any helpers on that area? xx
LovesSpringers
Today I've printed off loads more posters and posted them to the local famers in the area, just in case they've seen or see him. I am also posting posters to the local dog walkers in the area. I will be going to Ilkley either Saturday or Sunday to speak to the local people again.
I've emailed the local newspapers again to see if they will mention Bernie to create awareness. Fingers crossed someone has picked him up and he's safe. :-(

Thanks for your comments Catwoman- I think it will be useful for us to read Poppy's journey (32981) There are quite a few similarities, unfamiliar area and the rural location...
thank you

Hi Catwoman, thank you for message, today I have been very flat thinking the worst as there has been no sightings since Friday.
I am pleased to hear that you found Poppy and it gives me hope.
Bernie too is very timid and unsure of people. Some people had spotted him and tried to coax him with food but he was too scared to take it.
Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it x
Catwoman
Hello!! I have been asked if I can be of any assistance as my friend's dog Poppy the whippet escaped from kennels whilst her owner was away and lived rough for about 27 days until she was caught in a trap. Her story is probably still on Dog Lost somewhere. I am not sure how I can help, all I can do is tell you what I did and how this site helped us reunite Poppy with a very relieved Ken. When we first heard that poppy had gone then we alerted all dog wardens across a large area. (She went missing from kennels a long way from home). I contacted radio stations, but I am not sure whether alerts went out as I live the other end of the country. Her owner arrived back to the Uk and searched for her in the local area to no avail. We asked the kennels to put an ad in the local paper where someone spotted her, which at least gave us hope that she was still alive. We then had an amazing response from Dog Lost people who offered to help to poster and gave us tips about walking the area with scents. We were offered loan of a dog trap which a lady called Kim along with other friends offered to bait and check for us. Eventually Poppy was caught, probably jsut in time as she was very, very thin. She is also a timid dog and would not have approached people. I forgot, i also contacted any other lost dog websites and lost pet websites, and I also had in my mind, to never, ever give up. Poppy's owner thought she was dead, but i did not think that. Dogs are natural survivers and I like to think that we live in a country where most people like animals, so most people would do the right thing if they found a lost or injured dog. I wrote Poppy's story for the Arden Grange dog food face book page. I will aso try to update Poppy's photo for people to see how well she looks now.

Sadly, the kennels did not pay the reward that they promised. They said that they had donated money to this site. Poppy clearly escaped due to their incompetency. This would not have been the ending if Poppy had been my dog.

Anyway, please do not give up. Try to think of ways of getting publicity out in the area by thinking outside the box . People start to notice things that are different. Could you make a sandwich board and attach it to yourself? I don't want to sound daft, but people notice these things. Good luck. If I can think of any other ways to help i will post again. Sorry that I cannot be on the ground to help you to search, but I live in Cheshire.

Message to Sarah - no offence was taken, just want to make sure Bernie is safe, any help and advice is welcome.
West Yorkshire Animals In Need have been helping, they have been out searching for Bernie.

Hi, I'm the owner of Roxy (the Chihuahua who was stolen from Ilkley two years ago) and I was the one saying on Facebook that there weren't enough posters.

It wasn't that I was being disparaging of the efforts people are making, I just wanted to add some suggestions that I know helped us when our dog was stolen. There are NO posters in the centre of town for Bernie and the postering is centred around the park and on dog walkers, whereas sightings of Bernie have been in town by people not walking a dog.

Posters are best pinned to telegraph poles, rather than stuck tight to lampposts - sticking them tightly around a post makes them difficult to see, let alone read. They stand out much better placed flat, which is probably why I didn't notice any when I've been out looking for Bernie. Putting them through the town centre, even though they might get taken down quite quickly, is definitely advisable. If there's the odd poster here and there, chances are they won't catch people's eye. If there's one on every object through Ilkley, you can bet people will take notice.

I'm working a 7-day week this week so I will probably not get a chance to volunteer to poster, but my wife will if she has time tomorrow and we're both keeping an eye out for him when we go out.

Check & ask if West Yorkshire Animals In Need can help with search- they are based in the area & very proactive. The link is from there website- it gives local radio station info.
You could try local radio for help - WYAIN site does have a number of other links. The local people may be able to help a bit more to get Bernie home

Hi
Please could you help?
I've been round Ilkley yesterday putting up posters all around the area, but I got a message on Facebook from someone saying that I hadn't posted enough round the town centre. Would you be able to post a request asking a few voluteers to post a few more in the town centre?
I live in Castlford and was in Ilkley all day yesterday from 7am until 3.30pm posting and talking to people.
Any help is appreciated thank you in advance.

Hi goatwhisperer,
Yes please if you could help by posting posters in the town centre it would be much appreciated. Bernie is really timid so won;t allow people to approach him, we are just trying to get as many sightings as possible to bring him home. I don't mind paying for the printing of the posters, just want him safe. thank you again
LovesSpringers
We are still searching for Bernie, if anyone lives in the area please could you add a few more posters in the town centre? I am happy to pay for the printing of the posters. I live in Castleford and was there all day speaking to people and putting up posters. If you can help it will be much appreciated - thank you

Have spoken to Lee. Bernie has gone missing in an unfamiliar area.
He was originally a stray rescued from the A1 by Lee,reported to relevant authorities as found, checked by vets and fostered by them for the 28 days required by law.
He went to his new home today and slipped his collar almost as soon as new owner got him home.

Between them they have contacted Leeds,Bradford and Wakefield dog wardens
(in case he tries to make his way back to Castleford)
Sue has been out in Ilkley all afternoon searching and spreading the word.
There was a sighting around 12.30 not long after he went missing down near the cemetry by the river. When approached he ran back towards the centre of Ilkley.
Advice given re approaching him, lowering to ground and avoiding eye contact and returning to spot he was sighted with some hot food
Fingers crossed this boy is found safe soon
