Oh Wendy, I'm sorry I didn't see this immediately. By all means, text or email me if there is a possible sighting. For a moment I thought Bury St Edmunds could be it, but then I read both posts. We have had dogs end up in Norfolk or Suffolk, so it is always possible. Absolutely well done for The Observer. I know its so hard, but never give up hope, especially with a chip. Keep getting the word out as it can bring results, even like these possibles. That dog was someone's dog, so always the chance of Jack appearing. Keep it going, you have done brilliant! x

The Observer printed the story from our letter. Pity they missed the whole section on this site and our thanks to everyone, but at least there was a whole article about the problem of lost dogs etc.

The Observer are hopefully printing a story about Jack after I sent them a letter and a photo. The editor emailed to say it is hopefully going in this week.
I have also just had a new patient who thinks she may have seen him in and around the park area of St Michael's Mead. So we are going to take our other dog up there now to see if there is any sign and to put more posters up!
Will report progress!
Have also just emailed Bury St Edmunds as there is a picture of a dog found there who looks a close possibility. They haven't yet scanned the dog so I asked them to do this and let me know

Done new posters with Still Missing this time and am sending these out. The blanket movers were foxes - what fun they must have in our garden after we have gone to bed! Haven't been able to find any rabbiters yet. Local business networking group, BSBC, that I belong to, have put the poster on their website too under "news". Still hoping, still looking! Going back to the vets re scanning every dog next.

Yes still here! I have been out lecturing at Essex uni today and it has taken a deal of my time to put the lecture together, but I have almost finished the article that I am writing for the newspaper. So hopefully that might help. Still hoping and still trying. Had a phone call on the weekend from some youngsters who had found a black and white staffy. They sent me the picture, but unfortunately it wasn't Jack. The hopeful thing was that there are still some lovely people out there who are still seeing the posters and ringing through to see if the dog is ours. It is really heartwarming to have so much support.

Also, did you speak to to the bunny killers? I am inclined to think they might know something. Dogs don't just disappear even though it appears that way. Something has stopped Jack getting home. But what? There are no traps out there are there? Maybe the bunny killers put illegal traps down? Just thinking of anything to give us clues. Come on Jack, please come home. x

Keep spreading the news. It might be an idea to share to other people further away. Maybe if you have contacts in other parts of the country you could email a poster. I know it will seem doubtful, but it has worked in the past. If they then contact their dog warden with that poster and put it up in vets surgeries. The main thing we need to remember is that if Jack has been caught and passed on to someone, at some point he may get to vets and be scanned. Or, if he is loose, or escaped any captors, a dog warden should pick him up and scan. So, with Jack we do always have hope. This does not mean we should stop searching, even a small ad in the Herts papers, or Advertisers. Also, The Harlow Star. Even a couple of lines, could help. Do you know who was dragging the blanket? x

How old is Jack, as he looks quite young to me in the photo, but then my eyes aren't great! The reason I ask is on Gumtree Luton there is an ad for two staffy 'puppies' for sale £100 each in Bishop Stprtford. One is supposedly 2 months the other 10 months (but they maybe just saying this). They want rid of them asap and only mobile number to conACT. No pictures or descriptions. Maybe worth a check out. Havent spelt the name of the town right even Bishop Strotford evidently, fingers crossed. posted two days ago evidently

Really? I think you are going to have to do the same again tonight and do shifts watching the garden if you don't have a camera. You need to be sure. And whoever it is, I am sure it will be a sight to see. So hoping this is Jack. As I said before, we have seen some really strange things on this site, so never rule it out until you know. Speak to the dog warden about the poster, as if its really big you might need permission and the dog warden can fight your corner for you. The bigger the better. At the bottom of Jenkins. Actually you could use your sign, no permission needed for that! Maybe you could fix it to it? Double sided sign to see from both ways? Speak to your DW about it, just to check. Thank you all so much for your help and support. I left the blanket out again last night with some dog biscuits on it and this morning it had been dragged off the lounger again and dragged towards the house this time - biscuits gone. Our other dog showed no interest in it until I folded it and put it back on the bed then she sniffed at it for quite some moments, but again it could have been a fox- not too many lions round here!!
I will see if I can get a really big poster put up on the Hallingbury road.

Hi i'll print a few of the posters off and take them to the Great Hallingbury dog club tomorrow evening. i have noticed the posters on the hallingbury road but not sure they are large enough to be seen when driving at speed. I only recognise them from the poster at Normandale/ Mutts in distress.

DW, we were posting at the same time! Wendy, I think your dog warden is right too - you need to poster along the road and yes, the public does see stuff! DogLost posters are specifically designed to attract attention and give the correct information, so try using them too. MISSING as the first word, grabs attention, otherwise its easy to miss as you're driving by. They need to stand out, bright or white. Keep them going up and do as DW says. Wendy, all you can do is just keep "doing". Think of anything and investigate it. You have done well. I have removed the sighted part: it helps to add that when a dog is seen so the helpers know to swing into action. Can you go and speak to the bunny killers, you need to make sure they didn't have an accident if Jack was there. There are trigger happy people out there and if he was injured they might not want to say, so are covering up. I just want you to rule everything out as we have seen some very weird stuff on this site with our dogs. And, as you say they might know something, especially if Jack was chasing rabbits at the time. Who are these people? Are they residents, landowners or travellers? Sometimes people who shoot wildlife do not much care for any animal, but some actually love dogs but not wildlife, so you really need to have a chat and see what they're about. Not alone. Regarding the blanket, if you are sure it wasn't your other dog, it could have been a fox, but I have no idea why a fox would want a blanket. Dogs live in the moment, so he would be happy to be back at home and I would have thought he would have stayed there on his blanket. But, as he has been wild for a bit he may even have had a knock to his head. He could be a bit confused. They usually remember smells even if nothing else, so yes, it is possible it was him. Never rule anything out. Maybe he recognised his blanket but something happened to spook him again. Try scenting again from your garden out to the fields and leave the blanket out again. Unless he has hit his head, or something, he would stay there. The thing is, we really don't know what he may have been through, so we keep open minds. Have another scout around the area. Maybe he has made a den somewhere but if he has concussion, he won't quite be able to figure out where he is. This will heal in time, as you know, but I'd leave some food and water out as well. If it gets eaten (same time and place every evening), then maybe you can pop a camera up? Or sit and watch? Say early morning, when it gets light. That's when a lot of animals wander around. So hoping. I have bumped him up a bit for this. x

Hi Wendy, I would still try to put posters along the Hallingbury Road and anywhere where he would come out, my theory is that if he was picked up on the main road, someone must have seen something so make it big and simple with missing in big words at the top, a picture and then any information and your contact number. I am still looking out for any snippets I can get, walked the fields and spoke to dog walkers, given his picture to the police in BS. All we need is someone to have seen or heard something to move forward but we do need to make sure he is known everywhere. You may try, and I know its a lot of work, e-mailing as many vets as possible, even far away, with his picture so that if he is ever taken in they know to scan any that look similar, they do not automatically scan dogs taken into their surgeries. Not sure about the blanket, possible a fox looking for bedding but leave it out anyway. I am with you all the way XX

One other point - he is listed as "sighted", but we think the dog in the Birchanger Woods was not him but another black dog that lives on the edge of the woods. Does it make any difference if he is still listed as sighted?

Over the weekend I have left posters in the surrounding fields where people sit shooting rabbits! The thought process was that Jack may have have come across them and one of them took him home.
I also cycled the length of the Stort from town to Pig Lane and put more posters up and in the Nature Reserve and on the entrance to the riding stables in Pig Lane.
Apart from trying to find a moment to write something for the Observer, I can't think of anywhere else.
One odd thing this morning - we had left out on a lounger in the garden, a blanket that Jack used to drag around and when I went out there, it had been dragged half way up the garden. Is it possible that he came back but is not sure of his "reception"? Or what other animal would do that?

Wendy, I suspect he could well have been picked up so Dog Warden you are spot on. Keep going - remember he is chipped. You just need to find that link of who, what, where and MANY times we get that link. Keep going and dog as your dog warden has said. I know how disheartening it is, we lost our dog back in January 2011 and had various sightings all of which proved to come to nothing and to this day Oscar is still missing (we have been very unlucky). Don't give up hope and keep going with the posters. I would advise putting adverts in all the papers, we did this and because Oscar was insured, the insurance company paid out for all the adverts and the cost of printing the posters. Good luck and I hope Jack is found soon x

Wendy keep going with the posters in and around your home, but as far as you can get. Someone must have seen something which is why I would advise putting a larger poster along the Halligbury Road as this is the prime spot for him to have been picked up from but also for someone to have witness it. Still put an advert in the paper and if you can get some of the hand held posters to the Council Office in B/S I will hand them out next week at our Love Parks events.

I took a family and friends group into the woods last night (really appreciate all the posters put up there and acros the 120). When we were walking close to the houses a black dog without collar came running up and for a few seconds I thought it was jack, but it wasn't. He belonged to a family who live right on the edge of the woods. I rather think that this is the dog that was sighted and reported to me. We carried on searching for about 2 hours but there was no sign of another dog anywhere. We spoke to a number of dog walkers and they are also going to keep their eyes open.
I think we are back to Jack not being seen. I need to refocus.

Walked the woods today but did not see anything, spoke to anyone I saw. Try to get people to get out into the fields surrounding the woods and also go the other side of the a120 as the woods are split by this road. This also backs onto Birchanger Lane, put posters up all along that road and pop into any farms. Also perhaps stanstead road where the woods back onto the industrial estates, more posters here too.. Good idea about senting back home from there. Good luck xxx

Well done Wendy. Your posters are working! Have emailed you in reply to yours. By all means get a search party, but gently does it. Lots of helpers, but quiet and calm calling his name. More posters and take hot smelly food and do as I said about leaving food and water in a safe place every day, same time. This will part of his triangle. He may have just wandered too far and got lost. Leave something like an old blanket of yours as close to the sighting as possible. Do the scenting - try and scent him all the way home - they have very clever noses and know what you smell like. All family members can scent and the dogs! I so hope this is him, as this is fantastic news. Any helpers out there to assist please? If so contact owner or post on here. Thank you. x

Had a bit of trouble getting onto the website today but am here now! Had a phone call from someone last night to say that she had seen a dog like Jack in Birchanger woods. My husband and I went down there and walked till the light failed ( with our other dog) but still only covered about a third of the woods. I went back early this morning before work for another hour but still no luck. The Essex police were very helpful and don't think that the travellers by the M11 are a problem as there is virtually no-one there and they have very little reports about them. The Highways Agency came back to me today to say they have had no reports of him on the M11 - good news!
My next problem is how to cover the woods with enough people! We are going to try and get as many down there tonight as I can mobilise. I have put some posters up there but ran out of staples so will put some more up tonight.
Any suggestions as ever welcome!

Fabulous Wendy! Good news re travellers, although that aggregate place opposite will have them visiting from other parts of the country as well, so please try and get a few posters in there and up outside. Always best to cover all our bases. Yes, to handing out flyers in Jackson Square and yes to the papers. They don't always do a story on a missing dog unless you can find another angle to go with it, but do try and you may be in luck. Otherwise an ad, even a small one does help. Oh yes, Dog Warden, if I remember rightly there is a good radio station your way, maybe it is that one? They do help with missing dogs. Thank you DW. Well done for the poster Wendy. You are doing really well. Remember to remind Highways and council cleansing depts every couple of days as they do forget. Keep going with the posters as this is how so many dogs get home. Sometimes, just one person knows something and a poster in the right place has got a dog home. Can I suggest you take a look at Charlie, a boxer from Herts - she is now in the reunited, blue tab from about a year ago. Pop her ID number in the blue section 31981 and take a look. She didn't even have a chip and look where she ended up - Norfolk! But she got home from just one poster which was enough for a lead - turns out she was stolen from the street and put in a van. So the more posters the better. We had another one stolen from a van and she ended up in Oxfordshire - she was chipped. Jack is chipped. Keep going. Jack is out there somewhere. x

That's great Wendy, much better picture showing his markings so he can be better recognised. Try also to get something on Jack FM and spread the postcards and posters as widley as possibe, perhaps putting some through doors. Do try to put a big poster up on the Hallingbury Road as someone may have seen someone picking up a dog along there. If you drop some of the postcards into the Council offices at Bishop's Stortford and leave them for the Dog Warden I will also get some out and about in my part of the district, I also have some Park events next week so can pass them out then. Keep going your doing really well xxx On a slightly more down note, I do have to ask, have you checked along all the rivers and streams? I have had dogs caught up in them :-(

Have now done the police and the Highways Agency and re done the poster with new photos that my husband had on his computer that show Jack better. Have also put the poster onto small postcard size handouts that people can keep in their bags etc. Am thinking about taking loads of these and handing them out in Jackson Sq etc. I asked the police re travellers and they said they have very little reported problems with the local ones as there are so few of them there, but they will keep an eye. next plan is big ad in the observer.

Wendy, well done! We have had a number of dogs on the motorway and if police can catch, yes they will. If one has been hurt and the Highways Agency pick the dog up they don't scan. This is why you need to keep calling them. But the fact that Jack is chipped, can really help if he crops up somewhere - anywhere in the country. See if a policeman would go with you and physically check that site, just in case. Keep up the good work, and we'll keep looking. x

My son (ex policeman ) and I went past the site to see what was about. There is only one caravan in a sort of very small "housing estate" ie labelled 1 to 5 oak leaf complete with fencing and areas set out for caravans but very little evidence of anyone being there apart from the one caravan.
I have replied to the email re possible dog but unfortunately that is not Jack. I have walked the edges of the immediate fields tonight after work with no luck.
I also spoke to one of the patients this afternoon who is a Met policeman and he suggested that if Jack was on the motorway then the police would catch him if possible and scan him for the chip. He has given me some numbers to try though.
I will do more pestering over the weekend

Okay. Call the council's traveller liaison officer and the dog warden who have more powers to check out these camps. Problem is, it is now the weekend and they may not be working so leave an urgent message with each. I would go to the camp, but not alone, and take posters of Jack, put them up around there and hand them out, but some travellers are not very friendly, so be careful and have police on speed dial. Tell them there is a reward for his safe return. If you get a call, you may need to negotiate, just do the best you can. Make sure see him if you need to part with any money. I'm telling you this in case it crops up. You must also tell police and get as many details as possible of the perpetrators. Please re read my email on this. Many owner shave done this and it has led to their dog being returned, but as I say, take care. Wendy, I emailed you a photo of a dog, can you tell me if it is Jack? Right front paw is hard to check properly. 150 is good, but we need hundreds up in the public domain. If someone happens to drive past and sees a dog they won't know who to call unless there is a poster up nearby. Keep going, you can find him! x

I have put posters everywhere I can think of and my patients - bless them, are taking posters as well and putting them up everywhere. I guess we have put up about 100 -150 so far. One of them has just told me that there is a traveller camp under the M11 bridge near the equestrian centre on the way to Hatfield Heath from Little Hallingbury. Does anyone know of this camp and suggestions please! The equestrian centre have a poster and are keeping a lookout on horseback as well!

I've put 50 posters up thru Little Hallingbury, Gaston Green, Jenkins Lane, at the end of Bedlams Lane by allotments that lead to fields before the M11. Wendy, I saw your poster at the Pet Shop on the corner of Gt Hallingbury but it's losing impact amongst the pet ads. Can you ask them to move it to the front door? Also, may be an idea to have a white back ground at the very top with the word "Missing" across the top, as this usually grabs more attention. Well done for getting them out. You really do need to flood the area with bright "Missing" posters. Also, I would suggest you poster over the other side of the M11 to where you are. Sometimes dogs do cross motorways. I am hoping that Jack wouldn't as he shouldn't want to go that far from home, but if something happened and he has found himself over there, we need everyone to be on the lookout. Also, phone police to see if they authorised a flashing notice about any animals walking in the road on M11 recently. And speak to the Highway Agency again. You have a good dog warden so please liaise. Also, if Jack has been picked up, posters everywhere will alert the public! You also have a water treatment place somewhere there? Please try and contact them to keep a look out. Also poster along the river. I would also try and put a couple near the aggregate/hardcore place opposite. A number of types visit those places, and, if they see a reward on the poster, someone may let on if he has been picked up there. I have given a poster to the Maple riding school who will keep a look out when riding. Please give them all a ring and they will go riding in areas specifically to search, but you need to call them all. Your practice is where I thought it was, so I wasn't too lost at all. Please check all the water areas and ditches surrounding your home in case he is closer to home as well as further out. Anywhere on your property or neighbouring land he could have got stuck, or locked in? Hopefully, as it's the weekend, you will able to do a major search and poster which I hope will result in some news. Everything crossed for you here. x

You are doing well. Dogs can end up a few miles from home, but they can also get back. We need to plot his route if he is out there soposters can lead to this. My Geography can be out, no worries, but New Barn Lane is where you said he went before, so that is why I am thinking of that. Maybe he can smell the Mutts dogs. I like the poster on the door of the petrol station - really excellent! Usually, with the posters and word getting out, most dogs are found. It is a hard slog at times, but well worth the pay off. Please call the riding stables they really can access places you can't. Keep going! You're doing well! I'll get some more posters printed tomorrow. Hopefully we'll have had some news by then. Sometimes it does take a while, so hang in there. x

Thank you once again! I think the geography is still a little off. Jenkins Lane is off the Hallingbury Road - between Pig Lane and Beldams Lane. I think you are talking about the back road to Sawbridgeworth from Little Hallingbury past the Hallingbury Mill? Large plastic cow a dead give away! New Barn Lane is left after the George pub. I do take on board that the whole thing is about getting "it out there" though and have put a poster in the pet shop at Sainsbury's who I have known for 30 yrs and I have got the Birchanger Service station to put one up in their front doors as if you go from our place north, you can go straight up to the golf club and the service station. We have "postered" our postman and all our patients coming through as well (I have a physio clinic")and my thanks to Vicky for taking one as well. Also delivery drivers and anybody else I can think of - schools etc

Wendy, he's up the right way now! :-) It was when you said New Barn Lane, I thought of that little bridge half way down the road opposite the entrance to New Barn, as it goes past the houses it goes over the track. Can't think what the road's called off hand, is it Spellbrook? Okay, you are doing well. Give posters to all the pubs, put one in that phone box by the bungalows at New Barn Lane facing outwards for oncoming traffic. Do the telegraph poles in eye line of motorists. I would suggest dropping a poster, or flyer through all the letterboxes you can find and even drive down the driveways and speak to anyone you see. If you letterbox drop you can do that at any time as it won't disturb anyone, especially when their boxes are at the end of their drives i.e. farms. Tell the lady with the plastic cow in her garden, she may advertise Jack on the cow for you. Tell the Pottery place, tell the churches. There are horses/riding schools along that road, so hand out flyers and use a staple gun to attach a poster to their fence/gate - they won't mind one staple. I don't know an easy way of finding out land ownership there, but just follow the little roads and poster all the properties you come to. If he had been kicked by a horse, I suspect someone would have found him by now, unless he managed to wander off afterwards, in which case the fields will need checking. If he has concussion, he may just need to rest and could come round of his own accord and then make it home. Has he ever been along the river there? You may need to poster along there. The fact that your other dog didn't seem worried, is a good sign but dogs don't usually leave each other, unless they just go separated somehow. I would also contact as many riding stables/horse owners that you can find as they can help you look on horseback. Most would be happy to do this. Look them up and give them a call and also visit. There is a dairy there so speak to them and leave posters. Milkmen, postmen, dog walkers, school children, bus drivers, taxi drivers are all out and about and see stuff - give them all posters. Vicky, the Osteopath on Dunmow Road, BStortford, will put a poster up for you, for all clients to see as well. Get posters up the road that leads to the BS hospital; all the places where people visit. I can't think of any traveller sites near you, but do you know of any? Put posters up at Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsburys, pet shops can be helpful, take them into Vets, they will put them up. The more eyes looking the better. You never know which poster will the one, okay? The majority of dogs do get found so don't despair just yet, you can find him. You will need over 100 posters up in your area alone - you really need to get in people's faces. I will try and get some up for you tomorrow night if he isn't home by then, but hopefully he will be. If you need anything, just shout. x

Thanks for that. I have just put some more posters up and caught Uttlesford council litter pickers in their van along a road that borders the fields. They are going to keep the poster in their van.
The railway line is quite a way from us and the opposite direction from where he went, but I take on board what you are saying. Our other dog didn't seem stressed at all when she came back. I have taken her once along the fields but will do it again tonight. My other concern is that although there are no livestock farmers around, there are plenty of horses and he may well have chased them etc! All my patients so far today have taken posters and we will keep that up. I have contacted all the councils, vets etc and Mutts. Any ideas how to find out who owns the land/farms?
I couldn't turn the picture the right way up either!

Okay, well done. Let Mutts know. I am concerned as you have a rail line right there. Please read my email about this. You need to rule this out. Put posters up in the eyeline of motorists along from yours to Mutts and along the route of the road near the river. You will also need to check along the river and poster there. If he has been hurt on the road, the local councils and the Highways Agencies for the M11 should have seen him. So keep calling them daily, just to keep it in their mind. They do not scan dogs. It is hard to check the fields, but Jack would have got back to you if he could, so he probably is not in a field (can't say definitely, but I can't think of a danger in a field). I don't think you have livestock farms there, so arable farmers should not worry so much about dogs, but you need to talk to them all. Are there any farmers who lay traps? Keep scenting. Rain brings out the smell, but then eventually washes away, so it is good to scent before rain and again after. Did your other dog seem in a panic when he got home? Scared, worried? Is he frightened to go anywhere on a walk? Is he trying to take you somewhere on a walk? You have a number of councils there, so call Uttlesford, Sawbridgeworth, Hatfield, Harlow, Bishops St, for all the road people in each and the dog wardens. We do get dogs coming home a week or so later (even many weeks), so don't give up and keep postering. Please poster around the station and give them to drivers on the platform too. Notify Network Rail and keep a record of this. He is somewhere, so we keep looking. Well done. Helpers we need you on this one, if you can. Thank you. x

Jack went missing from our field in Jenkins Lane where we live. He and our other dog went off after a rabbit and did not come back when called!! The other dog came back within an hour but Jack didn't. He has gone missing before and been picked up in New Barn Lane in Little Hallingbury and Beldams Lane. There is the bridle path from Jenkins Lane through to Beldams. We have been all round Great Hallingbury and Little Hallingbury, Hatfield Forest and Start Hill area. I have walked the other dog down the fields to see if she could get the scent ( and leave a scent!) but with all the rain we have had since Saturday, this is not too hopeful. I have contacted all the councils, vets, dog wardens etc. As I have a physiotherapy practice in Jenkins Lane, all the patients are being told as well as being given posters!
The problem is that he could have gone anywhere down the fields with the M11 one side and the Sawbridgeworth road the other. Or he could have got onto the M11. Or he could have gone the forest way and then towards Dunmow.It is a problem now walking the fields as the crops are bigger than he is. I guess the next thing would be to try and contact the surrounding farmers.
