- @kjp .... Oscar wouldn't like you to cry, if he saw anyone upset, he'd be on their knees, with one of his famous headbutts, and he would kiss you till you giggled xx (crying myself here!)Last edited: 2013-04-16 20:00:33 by LeighB

- Thank you janiejewel, it really is Making the ordeal more bearable thanks to you and everybody else who has commented and the staff at doglost. Does anybody know how I can donate to this website/organisation, in the memory of Oscar, and for the big eye opener to the amount of owners who have lost a pet, and the amazing people on here who comment and help and support people like us, I'm really humbled to doglost at the moment, Oscar was a cat not a dog, and you ALL are brilliant x

- LeighB So pleased that Lily tested negative for the virus. Try not to worry about Lily having a litter at the age of one. A near neighbour, and also a friend both had cats who had litters at that age, and both the mothers, and kittens were absolutely fine. (All spayed now) I think it would be a great idea to keep one of the kittens in Oscar`s memory, and I am certain he will be very proud when he is watching over you all. Also it would be company for Lily too. (God works in mysterious ways) Of course you are still crying, and upset about the loss of your boy, but its early days yet. You didn`t just lose a family pet, you lost part of the family too. Although you will never forget Oscar, it does get better, just give it time. God Blessx Sending you (((HUGS))), and, pats, and strokes for Lily. Take care. Keep us posted.

- Thanks everyone, lily tested negative for the virus, and has now been microchipped, vet thinks she may be in the early stages of a pregnancy, her and Oscar were not from the same litter so chances are he will be the dad, would love to keep one in memory of our Oscar, but is it fair on Lily to have a litter at the age of one??? Still crying every hour or so for my Oscar, would he really have had the virus with lily not having it? Or could the RSPCA have lied to us and used it as an excuse, short of exhuming him and taking him for the test ill never know, my poor baby boy xx

- Please do your research about FIP and FIV. I have had 5 adopted cats with these diseases. They were kept as house cats without problems and all had long and happy lives between 7 and 13 years. Some died from the diseases but others died from other causes such as cancer.

- How sad - I am so very sorry and my thoughts are with the family. It seems to be the same old story when the RSPCA are involved I'm afraid. Run free at the bridge, lovely Oscar xxx

- So sorry to read this heart wrenching outcome - the RSPCA should have waited a bit longer for owner contact before doing this. Please don't make any decisions in a rush - we recently lost our boy at 15/16 yrs who was a rescue from age 5 yrs. He was diagnosed several years ago and lived happily enough indoors with my other cats - obviously not ever left together without supervision and he was fed & slept separately. He had the best life he could have and was happy and content to the end. Hope it's good news for you.

- LeighB Will be thinking of you at the vets tomottow, and hope it is good news. Also please dont blame yourself for this. We can all say if I had done this or if I had done that. Sure the people on this site have. I went through a similar thing with a pet a few years ago so I do know how you feel. But we are not God, and we cant foresee these things Take care, and God blessx (((HUGS))) Keep us posted.

- Thank you, lily and Oscar were both up to date with their injections, loved far too much, on a good diet, no symptoms, happy and healthy, just so gutted that if I had made the call 6 hours earlier, I could have saved him from being euthanised, and if I had microchipped him, it never would have come to this I would have been informed right away! My children are so upset, I told them he had gone to live with another family because he wanted to move out, and whilst at school today my 6 year old was told by a girl in his class (whose dad was the guy who rang the RSPCA) that Oscar was hit by a car, attacked by a fox, and was bleeding from his nose, he came out of school in a right state so I had to tell him the truth, it's never ending, it's so nice to know so many people care people we have never met, how people can hurt animals is beyond me! X

- Hi, so sorry to read your sad news. Please make sure you get a lot more information from the vets before making any decisions about your other cat. FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) and FIV ('feline AIDs') are not the same thing at all. In both cases cats can live for many years in good health with no symptoms and there is no need for them to be put to sleep. Keeping a cat indoors is an reasonable option if they have a stimulating environment and you can spend time with them, or if they can go out under supervision. If you decide to have your cat blood tested please give yourself time to think about the results and do not make a quick decision - there is lots of good advice on these conditions on the internet and 'positive' cats can still have a good quality of life. Fingers crossed you will get negative results - I have known many cases where only one kitten in a litter has had FIP. Wishing you all the best x

- Well to kick us while we are down, the infection Oscar had underlying was the cats equivalent of human aids which is easily passed to other cats, they've slept together, eaten together and played together every second of every day for the last year so I'm presuming she has it too, I'm taking her to the vets tomorrow at 12.30 for the blood test and they can tell me right away if she has it too, the vet said I need to think about what the best thing to do for lily is as if she does have it she will have a low immune system and only a couple more years to live, and as its contagious I will have to keep her in for the rest of her life to avoid her picking up infections from outside or giving it to other cats, heartbreaking really I could be looking at losing both my kittens in a matter of days. Thank you all for your kind comments xx

- LeighB Perhaps later on when you feel ready you could perhaps adopt another cat, as you state your existing cat is missing her friend. I have two cats, and because one was shy, nervous etc, was advised to get a kitten to keep her company. We were advised to rub scent off the neck of the newcomer onto a soft cloth, and place the cloth under or near the existing cats food dish, so she would azssociate the interloper with something nice; yummy food, and, of course vice versa. After a short while they were fine. early days yet for you I know. Please remember that /oscar has not gone forever, and one day you will see him again. God Bless
- 2013-04-15 15:56 Unknown
- LeighB Hi again, I also have two cats, (Both chipoped) You mentioned in your comments that your other cat is missing her friends? Early dayhs yet I know but in the future you could perhaps adopt a rescue cat/kitten to keep your existing cat company; a kitten may help, as it did with our abandoned lonely shy cat. We were advised to transfer scme scent (Neck) onto a soft cloth, and place it under or near the existing cats food dish, so the cat will associate the interloper with something nice; food. And vice versa. It worked for us. God Bless.

- Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

- Thank you to everybody who has shared and commented it really does restore my faith In humanity! Really sad to have to tell you, but shortly after I posted this, we printed out missing posters and posted them through the nearby houses, while my boyfriend was posting one, the guy over the road was washing his car, my boyfriend gave him the poster and the man informed him our Oscar was hit by a car on Friday night around 9.30pm, we were out having dinner (twice a month we go out!) and while lay at the side of the road, two lads walked past and saw him being attacked by a fox, and picked him up and took him to the guy over he road as he was In his front garden, Oscar was alive, the guy rang the RSPCA who came out, told him he was taking Oscar to the animal hospital and that by the looks of it it was worse than what it looked and he thought he would be ok, after ringing the RSPCA, the out of hours number and then the actual vet who dealt with him, we were informed that Oscar had pulled through, and as a precautionary measure before Oscar was moved to a part of the hospital where other cats were, he was tested for infection and had an infection called fip, which is undetectable and there's no routine vaccine for it and alot of the time like in our case absolutely no symptoms of it. As Oscar was usually a house cat I hadn't had him microchipped, and the vet couldn't contact us to ask us if we wanted to keep him or not, (which for the sake of a changed diet and a tablet a day there would have been no question, Oscar was very much part of the family and my best friend, she put him down this morning, we were a matter of hours late!) all your comments have really touched us, and the actions of our neighbours and passers by, thank you so much for helping, I'm broken hearted, please everyone get your pets microchipped no matter what. God bless :( xxx

- Catchat website has a great action plan of things you can or should do. Many of these will be the same as for finding a lost dog, - but link is here if there is anything you haven't thought of yet - http://www.catchat.org/lost.html
They also have a list of local rescues all of who might be contacted if a cat is found - http://www.catchat.org/adoption/lancs.html
I also assume you have contacted all your local vets - make sure they all get his details. Cats tend to travel a little less than dogs so lots of fliers through local doors can be really effective. Encourage neighbours to check garages and sheds to make sure he hasn't got himself shut in somewhere. Keep an eye on windowsills of any empty houses or houses where neighbours may be on holiday.
I work with a cat charity close to where I live and almost without exception it is the posters and fliers that bring lost cats home.
Good luck with your hunt - he might just waltz in again at any time. They can be little monkeys when then want to be! - 2013-04-14 17:26 Claire Gresty - Area Co-ordinator & Police Liaison - North West
