- Barney, may you play forever free of pain & suffering at the bridge, night night sweet boy.
I hope his owner is recovering from the ordeal. - 2013-04-29 22:39 LisaN7
- Oh no L am so sorry to hear this sad news l was following this on facebook. Rest in peace Barney god bless you and your family at this sad timexx

- Although I am no fan of the RSPCA either, they probably had only the dog`s interest at heart. I once knew of a family who kept their elderly dog on brain stimulants just to keep it alive. He was in no pain, and was under the supervision of a Vet. In my opinion there was an element of selfishness in this case. Sometimes as painful as it is we just have to let go. RIP+ Barney

- A very sad outcome and I know there have been awful situations with dogs being pts but please do not jump to conclusions. It was stated that Barney was in poor health and I am sure that a dog receiving such a large volume of publicity would not be pts unless there was a very good reason healthwise. Anyone seeing a photo of my cavalier or watching her run around with the others would say she is bouncing and healthy, whereas she has a grade 6 heart murmur and a very enlarged heart - she could collapse any moment and Barney may well have been in a similar situation. Since the initial reactions there has been a statement that Barney was in a very bad way, if he was poorly to start with and then had the trauma of the river he would have been extremely distressed and it would have been unkind to keep him going on the offchance his owner could be tracedLast edited: 2013-04-29 13:22:56 by Fleur

- A truly tragic end. I wish the people who attacked this old lady could read Barney's thread and realize what they've done. :(((

- Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

- CROSS POSTED FROM FB:
UPDATE 28TH APRIL'13:- So sorry to post this! Joy Renshaw is the lady who found Barney's owner and this is her post:- hi this is heartbreaking for me to do I'm crying as I'm writing, sadly, Barney had to be put to sleep on Friday he was in a terrible way. I have told the owner in a kind way and the dogs home have rang them, so upsetting hoped this would be a happy ending. I feel awfu!l - 2013-04-28 23:06 reggiemollieros
- Also Barney's owner bears no ill will towards the RSPCA and the woman who spoke to Joy (the person who placed the advert which reunited Barney, albeit too late) from the RSPCA was very kind and gentle so they do need the chance to say what happened. I must admit when we were trying to find the emergency numbers last night it was my deepest fear it would be too late. Bless you and your family Barney X

- Thank you jobadger for updating with a few more details. It sounds like everything that could be done, was done! The finger of blame most certainly lies with the people who attacked his owner causing Barney to run off. Wishing a speedy recovery to his owner and RIP Barney...
- 2013-04-28 22:31 Carol
- Ok Jayne I will get a friend to twitter as I don't either , yes I agree we should all work together , well done to timmysmummy for canceling and setting up a new one with dog trust , I think that's what I will do as all the RSPCA do is send me awful cruelty pics which turn my stomach , that is not necessary xx
- 2013-04-28 22:25 Mel
- So very sad, I'm no fan of the RSPCA but if this dog was chipped and his details were up to date he'd have been reunited so much sooner.
- 2013-04-28 22:01 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- Jobadger....Tx for the voice of reason...we all get angry...but the only way forward is to speak to each other..work with each other...and as you correctly say....there are so many branches of the RSPCA....and if you call them they dont even know...:-(
- 2013-04-28 21:53 jobadger
- Those who know me know that I am very anti-RSPCA - but I think in Barney's case, everything was done to help the old man. We don't know how long he was in the river - but his rescue had to be effected by firemen - he did have existing health issues and his breathing problems cannot have helped - perhaps he'd taken water into his lungs.......... we just don't know. All I would say is that RSPCA branches are all different......... There were lots of offers on the RSPCA FB page to pay his vets bills - so that wasn't an issue and his owner wasn't traced until late Saturday night. I am only assuming they did what they thought was right in the circumstances........ still - very, very sad......

- I have never donated to the RSPCA, nor would I, but I think we would all like to hear an explanation from them (Especially Barney`s owner) as regards Barney being PTS without the owners permission:-(
- 2013-04-28 21:34 Timmy's Mummy
- I have just cancelled my DD to the RSPCA and set one up for the Dogs Trust. Job done! Nite nite Barney RIP XXX

- Carol..I dont do twitter...but if you and your friends do...please look at earlier post from Riverlady..aka twitter queen and um repost...is that the word? Together we can have a voice for our dogs that cannot speak...tx
- 2013-04-28 21:03 Carol
- I have cancelled my RSPCA donation by direct debit , I think Barney looked ok in his picture and feel that they should have obtained that dear old ladies consent before putting Barney to sleep, god I would have paid his vet bill.... poor sweet boy xxxLast edited: 2013-04-28 21:05:03 by Carol
- 2013-04-28 20:57 Jayne - Founder Doglost.
- Carole you did the right thing and by your effort owner was traced...very sad outcome....but at least the owner has closure...we do not as this is happening too often....lets hope we can do something about this....
- 2013-04-28 20:37 Carole
- When I added Barney on here I didn't realise it would turn out to be so heartbreaking! I so hope that the RSPCA did everything to try and save him! Although the reports say that he was really poorly he looked to be reasonably healthy on this picture! I thought the RSPCA WERE THERE TO HELP ANIMALS! Last edited: 2013-04-28 20:38:39 by Carole

- Okay...that means its going to go viral....go for it Riverlady....Sometimes the truth has to be told...We are small compared to the RSPCA and have no funding...but we love our dogs...and together we are strong and can be heard....a word of caution though...we need to hear the RSPCA's version of events.....And sorry from experience they have rarely replied...

- Surely if an owner has been traced, the RSPCA need to obtain permission before their dog is pts? Maybe I am wrong xxLast edited: 2013-04-28 19:00:52 by digbysmum

- Oh no, I'm so very sorry to read about Barney, what a beautiful boy.
Thinking of your family, I'm sure you will be missed very much
RIP handsome xxx - 2013-04-28 17:25 ClaireC
- So very sorry to read this tragic story. I do hope the owner of lovely Barney will make satisfactory progress from her traumatic ordeal. Although not reunited with Barney in the way we all hope for I hope that she can draw some comfort that her beloved dog at least passed away in a safe place where people were trying to help rather than being left somewhere to die on his own. RIP Barney xx
- 2013-04-28 16:59 Carol
- I am so sorry for the elderly owner for both her awful ordeals , and I agree that the RSPCA can't be bothered with an elderly dog he should have gone to a vet sponsors on here would have paid the cost xxx
- 2013-04-28 16:05 reggiemollieros
- I am so very sorry. Joy who placed the advert was going to go with the family today to see him but they were too late. He had lots of offers of sponsorship and fostering so at least she can know he was loved by many people who tried to help him. It is heart breaking news. RIP Barney X
- 2013-04-28 15:50 digbysmum
- So very sorry, although this really doesn't surprise me when a sickly dog has been taken to the RSPCA. Bit suspect, I think. So sorry that Barney's owner wasn't reunited with him, and my thoughts are with her at this time and hope that she is recovering from her ordeal. Run free at the bridge, lovely Barney, where my two labs will be waiting to play xxxLast edited: 2013-04-28 15:59:18 by digbysmum

- 2013-04-27 22:43 Carole
- I am so pleased that Barney's owner has been found! Is there any update on him as he was very poorly? X
- 2013-04-27 22:36 jobadger
- Been following Barney's progress on here and on FB. Absolutely fabulous lady - Joy - never gave up. Brilliant that he's to be re-united - so pleased for his elderly owner and Barney and so very pleased they're both recovering from what must have been quite an ordeal. xxLast edited: 2013-04-27 22:45:22 by jobadger

- Barney Barnacles elderly owner has been found thanks to a wonderful lady called Joy Renshaw who was determined to find his owner. The lady had been knocked unconscious by burglars in her home and Barney had escaped. Doing the happy dance here at FOARCT.
- 2013-04-27 21:25 MillieVW - Area Volunteer - West Wiltshire
- I've just read on Facebook that Barney's elderly owner has contacted someone that put an ad in Gumtree and they are certain from the photo that its their Barney that got out during a break in. I have everything crossed and hope they can be reunited asap.
- 2013-04-26 07:59 Carol
- Why can't he be put up for reforming , surely his new owner would take him to vet and get him sorted he would have a loving time at least , I am worried in case they put him down xxx
- 2013-04-25 23:54 debbie
- Well afew of us are following him on our fb and there's been quite afew offers of homes that want to look after him while the owners are traced but a statement from RSPCA is saying its in his best interest not to move him at present due to his ill health :( x
- 2013-04-25 19:30 Julie B
- To be honest i am worried about him being with the rspca as well ....especially as he isnt in the best health. I do worry that they wont give him a chance to go on and find a loving home :-(
- 2013-04-25 13:40 digbysmum
- Mmm, bit worried about lovely Barney being with the RSPCA. Do hope he will be ok and his owner can be traced, or else he can be rehomed xx
- 2013-04-23 23:05 debbie
- Poor Barney is poorly ad on medication as I saw updated on fb. He was also found with his lead still attached so wondering if his owner like you say doesn't know how to find him x
- 2013-04-23 20:42 Carole
- Please go through the link for an update on Barney. Seems like he's a poorly boy! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=463247740410683&set=a.323420544393404.70934.315219701880155&type=1
- 2013-04-23 09:32 kaz55
- As Barney is with the rspca, I can't understand why they have not contacted all local vets, to see whether he is registered with any of them, seems logical to me? If he is owned by an elderly lady, she may not know how to go about finding him. Can anyone from dogslost in bristol area check with vets instead :)
- 2013-04-22 22:15 Carol
- Poor old fella he needs a massive hug , also hope the elderly lady is ok as well !!! X
- 2013-04-22 10:08 Lisa
- I would just like to add I also gave her the paperwork for the micro chip but unfortunately it seems that she hasn't updated the address and contact details.
- 2013-04-22 10:02 Lisa
- I am Barney's previous owner, an old lady had him from me 2 and a half years ago in Bristol unfortunately I have no details of an address name etc all I no is her daughter was called Lisa.....Barney had an operation whilst he was with me on his ears due to a fluid build up, he also has a food allergy....I so wish I was able to keep him now but due to no garden and living on a second floor the stairs was giving him pain in his hips :(. My number is in my details I have left on here also I have emailed Bristol Dogs and Cats home......I'm so pleased he's ok after his ordeal.
- 2013-04-21 20:59 Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
- Wonder if any local vets would recognise him? As Carol has said, owners could be elderly and not have a computer :(
- 2013-04-21 13:26 Carol
- Perhaps they are elderly and haven't got a computer xxx
- 2013-04-21 13:04 Carole
- I added this dog as I saw it via Facebook! I can't understand why it isn't registered as lost either! He's a lovely looking man! I do hope he's genuinely lost and owners just don't know about this site!!
- 2013-04-21 10:09 Carol
- If I had a dog this old I would report him missing this is not looking sincere , hope I am wrong xx
- 2013-04-20 23:17 Beth
- 2013-04-20 21:18 Carol
- Yes !!! need to be careful who has him back poor boy xx
- 2013-04-20 20:01 Unknown
- Does anyone know how Barney came to be in the river? Nothing sinister I hope. Keep us posted please.
