I've only just seen this - been away. I am so terribly, terribly sad. So hoping this was quick. He is safe now in heaven proudly wearing his little wings. This is one hero we will never forget. God bless you you sweetheart, always.xxx

Such sad news :'( x
ClaireC
Mishybird I am equally as devastated that Gerald was not found before now. Having been assured and then reassured that the flat was totally checked by the owners, the owners son and daughter, insurance assessors, firemen and likewise builders that I had to go along with their assurances! I visited what remained of that flat on numerous occasions, sometimes 2-3 times most days and I and along with others that were checking for Gerald's return to the trap were not allowed to enter the flat as it was a danger and notwithstanding the fact that it was boarded up. Seriously I don't think anybody else could have done anymore than what was done to try to find Gerald. I too have sent my condolences to the family but at the present time, I have not had a reply and neither do I wait for one. As I said before RIP Gerald a brave little man xx
Meru

So very very sorry to read this sad news. I was told that the flat had been searched thoroughly. I know that there is ongoing building work still taking place and I actually would have thought that they would have found him long before now! Both Julia and I frequently checked the outside of the flat as well if this is what they are calling the landing! At least the owners now have closure. RIP Gerald - a brave little dog.xx

Sadly Gerald's body was found yesterday underneath rubble on the landing of the flat. He was found by builders it is thought he had been there all along.

So very sorry, sleep tight sweetie XX

Thank you for continuing to think of Gerald. Sadly that is not him.
ClaireC
Hi LisaK, Gerald is a very small JRT (I think the Labrador cross bit relates purely to colouring I'm told!) and I (personally) think this found one is too big. However, I will ask Julie because I don't think the owners look on here anymore. Julie owned the kennels from whence he came and I'm sure she will know. Thank you for still looking. Does Gerald have a docked tail? http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog-blog.php?dogId=55163
ClaireC
Sadly Mishybird it has gone very quiet. There has been no reported sightings or even possible sightings other than what I have posted.
Mishybird
Has everything gone quiet on Gerald then?
ClaireC
I have been alerted today to a dog that was spotted (and also seen fairly regularly) up near Wick Farm, Wiggington (to gain access go up small road by the side of The Greyhound pub as far as you can go. Park up and head thro' the gate at end). I spoke to a dog walker and she has seen the dog on 4 occasions now (she cannot catch it as it is too frightened of people) but when I showed her a picture of Gerald said it wasn't him. This dog that has been sighted is a JRT poss cross) short flat haired and larger stuck up ears. The dog warden will be alerted by Julie as it is probably in its best interests to be caught. If anybody does go walking up there with their dogs near the woods is a sign stating that they are trapping and/or poisoning vermin and to take care.Last edited: 2013-06-25 16:50:44 by ClaireC

Thanks Babs 21 owner has checked and its not Gerald. Thank you for keeping an eye out for this old man. x
ClaireC
Have sent owner a text asking him to check and post on here a yay or a nay.
ClaireC
Thank you Babs. I suppose somebody could have picked Gerald up and then dumped him that way. Going by owner I think they would say physically impossible for him to have walked that distance. Having said that I will alert the owner to your post. Thank you for continuing to look for Gerald. x

Been Sharing Gerald's details and a member on the Lost paws group has post this found dog in relation to Gerald. Having now spoken with his owner there have been no sightings or even a suggestion of one. I have driven up there this evening and went into the stinking cupboard at the end of the flats. Absolutely nothing in there that resembled a dog I can assure you all! I then had a slow drive around the area(s) that it was thought he might have gone to but again nothing. Not many posters up now. Dacorum Council seems to do a good of a job taking them as quick as they've gone up! Sorry folks.Last edited: 2013-06-13 21:36:39 by ClaireC

Jacks, I can go over there this evening and have a closer look into it. I haven't heard anything from the owners since my last post and I am guessing that they have not heard anything either from any possible sighting etc. Mishybird the flat is now being rebuilt etc. and IF Gerald was in there he would now have been found. Sorry.Last edited: 2013-06-13 15:10:19 by ClaireC

I still have a feeling Gerald is near the flat, or in the flat, such a strong feeling
jacks
I'm still here Claire it was good to meet up with you on thursday, i'm still looking but to be honest i'm not sure where we go or do next. There's one thing that keeps playing on my mind for some reason, when we went round to the flat do you remember the stairs on the other side and the little cupboard underneath the stairs where the door was broken i know you looked into it but did you manage to see right inside it and just wondered if you thought maybe it was worth another search with a torch what do you think
DogLostMillypod (Chris) - Administrative Volunteer
I keep checking websites but to far away to help.
ClaireC
The owners have checked this dog out. Apparently this one has all his teeth and Gerald has only a few! I have heard nothing now from anyone since my last post.Last edited: 2013-06-13 15:06:54 by ClaireC
Belle
Very surprised that the dog Starmutts listed is only 2 years old! Looks very elderly.
ClaireC
I am now away for the weekend and in view of the weather if Gerald is still in the area then the recreation field does not have any natural water in or around it. Just thinking that if anyone is taking their dog for a walk in or around the area of Tring then perhaps the wooded area where a dog was seen running out of the woods on the junction at Tring might be an idea as it does have a lake in there. Nice place to walk your dog as well as it is shaded. Can't quite remember the name but believe it is called College Lake and just off Nathanial Walk/Way. Thank you x
ClaireC
Thanks starmutts but this one has been checked out by owners and is only approx 2 years old. Thanks again. x

I have just come back from my second visit there today. Bumped into the owner's son this morning as he is working within a very short distance from the possible sighting area. And again tonight bumped into a man with his 3 dogs, two of which were Bloodhounds! Sadly they didn't pick up on anything. Met up with Jacks (thank you for your help and lovely to meet you) and together we went around the "sighting" area again as it was a little darker but again nothing and no sounds either. Went to the flat and the trap is still empty. I now just feel that there is no real point in going to the same area again unless there is a positive sighting. I also feel that as this area is so close to "home" that he would make his way there. Sorry folks.
Mishybird
I drove around for a while after work today, spoke to a few dog walkers and checked the posters were still up. any news from anyone else?
ClaireC
Jacks, if you are around this evening from 8.30pm-9.30pm that would be a great help as my husband isn't able to assist tonight. My mob is 07887652916. I'm not handsfree but leave a message and I will get back to you.

Five of us all looked and searched the very long grass last night. We didn't see anything. Trap is still in place just in case Gerald makes his way back there. I shall be going back there again shortly to have another walk around. There are so many many people who are aware of Gerald and the injured JRT in Aylesbury the other day brought in so many phonecalls through Mix 96 to owner as people thought it was Gerald so lots and lots of people are aware. Keep looking people please. Will update later. The only other distinguishing feature apart from a shortage of teeth is that he has a black mole type lesion on the back of the neck. We don't think he was wearing a collar at the time he ran out of the smoke filled flat.Last edited: 2013-06-06 08:52:25 by ClaireC
Mishybird
Are there any other distinguishing things we should know about. We now know about the teeth, what about a collar, was he wearing a collar?
Jo
Good luck Claire ! Come on Gerald show yourself you need to get back to your owners now

Ohhh... I do so hope this is Gerald. Is there any point inleaving something belonging to his owner - or scenting - in that area to keep him there, if it is the little man? xx

Mishybird thank you. Obviously Dacorum Council had taken other posters down from when I/or owner posted up there! However, I have now had contact with owner and the found dog is not Gerald. This dog is only about 2 years old and has a full set of teeth whereas Gerald doesnt! But there has been a possible sighting at 9pm(ish) last night not far from where he used to live in the recreation fields. He is obviously frightened and ran off into the bushes. My husband, myself and some members of the family are going up there later tonight and see if this dog or Gerald shows itself. I will post tonight if successful. If not I will go there tomorrow morning again and let you know.
Mishybird
I posted at park, by Dog bins. Cricket club, main rd by tesco, petrol station, Bus stop near Market, and local shop
Jo
I have just checked but its not coming up as reunited yet
ClaireC
For ease of confirmation, please click on the original link that was put on for the found dog and you will see that this dog has not been claimed as it would state reunited across the photo. I did actually put some posters up at Tring Market and I know the owner left posters at the petrol station. I did put a poster up at the fire station but like all things I don't know if Dacorum Council has taken down.

I still don't understand why no more posters have been put up it also seems really strange that there have'nt been any sightings of him if this found dog is'nt Gerald then i think someone has got him sorry if i sound a bit blunt but there does'nt seem as if the communication is working very well here
DogLostMillypod (Chris) - Administrative Volunteer
Thanks Claire, like Jo and Mishybird was hoping for good news. Will keep searching.
ClaireC
I have not heard from the owner who was investigating the found dog. If it had been Gerald, I feel sure he would have telephoned/text me and therefore I have to assume that this was not Gerald. Last edited: 2013-06-04 20:59:11 by ClaireC

Hi Jenny, yes local radio stations have put an alert out. Not sure if the owner is using Doglost posters but maybe his own that he originally had done before putting Gerald on Doglost!
jenny
have you tried local radio 3CR or heart they may be able to put the message out for you - have shared on twitter - must say been through Tring today and didn't see any posters. Best of luck
ClaireC
Cindy I do believe they have been. Gerald is still chipped (as he was a rescue dog) to the rescue kennels and they are on telephone standby 24/7. All the relevant authorities are aware of missing Gerald which do include the dog warden, Highways agency and Council workers. There are now, I am told, a lot more posters up.
cindy
Have the local kennels been checked again, and the local vets? Also the dog warden.

Is there someone near by who can poster some more and check existing ones after the wet weather? Gotta get this brave little dog home. Please get out and poster (& pester).
ClaireC
I am away for the week and if anyone is in the area please can you keep an eye out for this lovely brave dog. Thank you.
ClaireC
The flat as been thoroughly checked out, especially since the fire. Sorry ladies.
Mishybird
Yes I agree, check it out, he may be hiding somewhere in a corner, or under rubbish waiting for his owners to come back.
cindy
I believe someone from the family has been back to the flat, but whether it was before it was boarded up??? It might be worth a look, just incase he is in there, as it is a while since he went missing I suggest it is checked sooner rather than later, especially as he is elderly and not have any food or water in there.
Mar
I agree with you Mishybird, worth taking a look in the boarded up flat. Hope he's found.
Mishybird
I understand it was boarded up, but he may have snuck in whilst they were boarding it.
ClaireC
I agree Jacks and as far as I am aware this is what the owners are doing when they've got more printed I am told. Mishybird the flat was boarded up.Last edited: 2013-05-25 17:02:16 by ClaireC

i think there needs to be a lot more posters up further afield i drove the length of icknield way today and only saw one poster by the ind estate i also went down i think it's brooke street where the pheasant pub is and only saw 1 down there i think the whole area needs to be swamped with them also round by tring school area as it's surprising how far a dog will travel i too have wondered if someone has taken him in unaware of what has happened or who he is as not everyone buys the gazette as there have'nt been any sightings i think that this is more likely thats why i think it's important to flood everywhere in tring with posters
Mishybird
I still have a very strong feeling that he has crept back into the shell of the burnt flat.
ClaireC
Sorry to have to say that there have been no sightings or even a possible one. It is hoped that Gerald is possibly in "hiding" in the wooded area still especially today in view of the weather being so grim. Also, it is felt that another possibility is that Gerald has been taken in and the person is unaware of him being lost. Surprisingly, there are still a number of people in Tring that are unaware of the fire and therefore of Gerald being lost. It is hoped that as more people go to the shops this weekend that they pick up the Tring Gazette and see him in there and make contact. Come on Gerald we do need a sighting or some other information before I go away next week.
ClaireC
Mishybird there is a poster up at Tescos in Tring or at least the manager said he would put one up! The owner has walked around the wooded area today but sadly there has been no sightings or even a possible one so far. They did manage to trap a cat in the trap set up outside the remains of the flat though. Friday is market day and I have some market trader friends who will spread the word and keep a lookout as they are up out and about and setting up very early in the morning. Tomorrow the weather is expected to be grim and if that is the case then I guess Gerald might stay undercover.Last edited: 2013-05-23 19:46:42 by ClaireC

please put one up at Tescos

There is a primary school nearby and I do believe they have been notified. I have also suggested that they put a poster nearby the school gates. There are some posters in the swing area very near to the school.

Is there a primary school local to where Gerald has gone missing - perhaps an announcement at assembly - are these still held? - children have eyes and ears everywhere and would be so excited to be able to save a hero........... just a thought.......... xx
kjp
fingers crossed this scared little old man is found safe and well xxx
ClaireC
Good evening all, Julia and I went ovet to the wooded area and had a very thorough "dig" around the undergrowth of where the possible sighting of Gerald was. Sadly nothing. We walked his favourite walk around the playing fields/recreation area, back up to the flat where there is a trap set and back again. We then each went different directions and from my driving around the streets very slowly I saw nothing and I doubt that Julie had either otherwise she would have been in touch. The owner hasn't had any positive sighting in Tring today. It is felt at this time that until we have a definite sighting then a search party as such would be to no avail. Gerald is featured in the paper today and really hope that it does bring some more news of Gerald being closer to the Tring area. I'm sure everybody that lives/drives around the Tring area will keep him in mind as will I and Julie. Thank you.
Unknown
Sorry to see this it may be that he is scared (And of course he has been) and is hiding somewhere. Try to stay positive. Will pray for his safe return.

I'm assuming that ALL the neighbours for several streets have been alerted that Gerald is missing? It's most likely that he'll come back to an area he knows and it would be a shame if someone saw him and didn't realise what had happened. VERY best of luck. x

Where do I start! Went to Wiggington early this morning. There had been no sightings of a dog up there. Went back into Tring with my Border Collie and walked and walked around Silk Mill Lane area (she is now a Terrier size!). Went up to where the sighting by woodland by car on the way back. Then the sighting came in. Have been back there this evening from 6pm until 9pm. Lots of good places to hide and shelter. Have left small parcels of Tuna around (which will probably draw in a lot of wildlife or cats I know). There is a lot of water around which Gerald would easily access. What I would say to people is please don't all converge on this area as he could be anywhere along the Icknield way and may even double back towards Silk Mill and therefore please keep an eye out for him. Lots of dog walkers are aware and they have been given the Doglost cards just in case they cannot get hold of the owner quickly. They even have my mobile. Also I have advised that in the event they catch Gerald and we are unobtainable then the Dog Warden is another alternative. My plan is to go back to Tring tomorrow at some time in the morning and will update on any progress tomorrow. The Tring Gazette will be out and I believe is featuring Gerald and the fire. Really hoping that this will bring in some further sightings that we can follow up. Stay safe Gerald until we find you. xLast edited: 2013-05-21 21:49:05 by ClaireC

I think owners son went there yesterday to see if there was anything sentimental that had not been destroyed so he would have had a good look around - hopeful that todays sighting is him and that he will show himself again
Mishybird
I know this sound silly, but is there a chance he may have snuck into the building and been boarded up inside?
DogLostAngus
Possible sighting this afternoon

Mishybird - the flat was totally wiped out in the fire - owners and neighbours have had to move out and properties boarded up - food and clothing of owners have been left close by but the smell may but him off venturing too close

Julie Shelton - thanks for putting the trap up - I may drop another over to you tomorrow incase owners want to set one up near the possible woodland sighting

Fingers crossed for something positive tonight xx

Fingers crossed for good news tomorrow. Julie x
ClaireC
There will be a front page story on this little fella on Wed in the Tring Gazette. Hopefully this may bring in some further sightings.
ClaireC
I went to Tring this morning and searched around the area of Silk Mill Way. Lots of high shrubbery and good places to hide and also near a stream that is running through. Sadly no sign. Lots of people are aware and I've have put a few posters up. The local foot postmen are aware as are the bin collectors (they have a poster which will be displayed in their offices), the roadsweepers are also aware. There was a possible sighting up near a farm at Wiggington today at 11 am. If anybody is around this area please can they keep an eye open? The owner's son has not had time to call the Council today on the RTA of A41. It is hoped that he will talk to them tomorrow. We have been up to Wiggington tonight but again nothing to report.Last edited: 2013-05-20 20:48:40 by ClaireC
ClaireC
Hi Mishybird we dont think it was Gerald. It was a bit too far away for him we believe to have gone that direction as he lived at the other end of Miswell Lane near the town end rather than the other end which is nearer the A41. Gerald is aged at around 12-15 years old. The owner's son has been all the way along the A41 today but has seen nothing. I will ask the owner to check with Dacorum Council Highways though or even I will on Monday.Last edited: 2013-05-19 20:07:41 by ClaireC

Checked out the A41 again this afternoon, but no sign of anything today. Had a drive around the area and actually came past the end of Miswell Lane. So many places he could be hiding. Would suggest postering all the local businesses on Monday as well as getting up loads of posters. My daughter will passing through that way tomorrow afternoon/early evening and will be on the lookout too xx

Hi Matthew, after we spoke I went down to Silk Mill Way after possible sighting that you referred to. Sorry but had a good drive around but nothing to report. As I said I think that Gerald would have made a run for freedom but going straight ahead rather than going to the front of the shops where there would have been a lot of noise with fire engines, police & people etc. It maybe that he will double back towards the flat again though and your suggestion of putting food up there outside the door maybe a good idea. Perhaps also a large(ish) box so that he can fit into as well with perhaps something of his own or owners clothing (if there is anything left!) even perhaps something of yours that he can relate the smell to. As I said to you today if you need extra help when you've sighted him then I can make myself available. I can check out any other area for you on Monday as I virtually have a free day.

Finally,I am so sorry to see that your mother's flat is just completely gutted but at least she managed to get out of what must have been an inferno. As we know, Gerald was not left behind and that he is somewhere probably hiding and now looking for his food and water etc. Do please let me/us know if there is anything else we can do especially for your mother. Happy to help.

Mollie's mum could you text the number above to offer to help - my gut feeling is that he will be close by but hiding and I have recommended a door to door search of the properties nearby - many have large gardens most of which have a shed at the bottom - he could go un noticed very easily

I have had a look - it is feasable - if you could check again tomorrow that would be greatly appreciated Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum x

I really hope this is not connected, but I was coming along the A41 earlier this afternoon (from Watford towards Aylesbury) when I noticed a small, pale coloured animal laying half on, half off the central reservation. Can't remember if it was just before or just after Tring. I know you get a lot of foxes and badgers on that stretch of road, but this was a much paler coloured animal and I think it was smooth-coated. At the time I assumed it was a young deer. Wasn't sure whether to mention it on here, as the last thing I want to do is cause any unnecessary pain or anxiety, but I guess it does need to be checked out. I could probably take a drive out that way again tomorrow afternoon.

Did he go missing anywhere near the A41? Also, what sort of size is he (i.e small build, slender?)

requested more info on location of the house fire - which was MISWELL LANE in TRING, Gerald managed to wake his owner by scratching at the door and she escaped from the flat which has been totally devastated , Gerald fled the front door when it was opened and has not been seen since - he is a small elderly dog so may be sheltering close to the flat entrance - I have given scenting advice - OWNERS REALLY NEED SOME HELP HERE POSTERING
